UKmigrant:
Tick tock, exactly a year since I moved here!!! Uhmm! what can I say? Bitter sweet-experience, but can't complain sha.

Any regrets so far? Absolutely not!

Are things going according to my plans? Well, kinda! grin

All I can say is, life gets busy really quickly here, too many things to do personally, professionally, socially, and if you're religious, thats additional time commitments.

In summary, no matter how rosy it may seem to be "abroad", you'll work very hard for everything and the system would also try to take as much from you as possible.

But if you are obsessed with societal functionality, you cannot complain.

So for now, I keep cracking on. No time to look back grin

Happy anniversary to me!

Thread followed, but please keep the photos coming! This is a part of UK not many know about.

Most of these police cars are just used for image events - e.g. taken to show school kids, media events, career fairs to encourage recruits. The one exception to that is the Dodge Charger, which is used by several US law enforcement agencies. $46k is not much compared to the others on this list.

A US astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut were forced to make an emergency landing after their Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned en route to the International Space Station (ISS).

Shortly after taking off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Nick Hague and Alexey Ovchinin reported a problem with the rocket's booster.

The men were forced into a "ballistic descent", with their capsule landing a few hundred miles north of Baikonur.

They have been picked up by rescuers.

"The search and recovery teams have reached the Soyuz spacecraft landing site and report that the two crew members... are in good condition and are out of the capsule," US space agency Nasa said.

Russia said it was suspending any further manned flights, and an investigation into what went wrong had begun.

What happened to the rocket?

The launch appeared to be going smoothly, but some 90 seconds later Nasa, on its livestream, reported that a problem seemed to have occurred with the booster rocket between the first and second stages of separation.

Footage from inside the capsule showed the two men being shaken around at the moment that the fault happened.

Shortly afterwards, Nasa said they were making a "ballistic descent" meaning their capsule descended at a much sharper angle than normal and would have been subjected to greater G-force - the force imposed on a body by rapid acceleration.

The capsule separated from the failing rocket and later deployed parachutes to slow its descent.

The last place you want to find a missing envelope full of money is in your shredder.

But that's where Ben and Jackee Belnap of Salt Lake City, Utah, discovered their $1,060 (₦350,000), which they needed to pay for University of Utah American football season tickets.

Searching for the missing money, they were horrified to find it torn to pieces - courtesy of their son, Leo.

Their two-year-old son helps shred junk mail, and was trying to be helpful.

"Leo helps me shred junk mail and just things with our name on it, or important documents we want to get rid of," Jackee told news station KSL TV.

She and Ben had been saving up the money to repay his parents for the football tickets.

Jackee told USA Today the money was "locked in a file cabinet until it was time to pay [Ben's] parents".

The couple then placed it on a counter to remind themselves to deliver it - only for the envelope to disappear.

After a house-wide search, Jackee found the remains in the shredder.

Ignorance which breeds cruelty, it almost better to put them out of their misery than keep them in such conditions. Or they could show some humanity and release them? Disgusting people.

For those who don't know what manatees are:

https://www.savethemanatee.org/manatees/facts/

"Manatees are gentle and slow-moving animals. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and traveling. Manatee are mostly herbivorous, however small fish and invertebrates can sometimes be ingested along with a manatee’s normal vegetation diet. They eat aquatic plants and can consume floating, emergent, and submerged vegetation from freshwater, brackish, and saltwater environments. Because they are mammals, they must surface to breathe air. They may rest submerged at the bottom or just below the surface of the water, coming up to breathe on an average of every three to five minutes. When manatees are using a great deal of energy, they may surface to breathe as often as every 30 seconds. When resting, manatees have been known to stay submerged for up to 20 minutes. Manatees can swim up to 20 miles per hour in short bursts, but they usually only swim about three to five miles per hour."

When your mates say to you: "Heard of the 'roundabout of death'? Wanna try it?" The answer should be an immediate: "Not a chance, mate". The name alone gives the impression that things aren't going to end well.

But when it comes to kids, things are always a little different - you might feel old, jaded and increasingly in fear of your own mortality, but youngsters tend to be more curious about these things, not to mention under the illusion that they're somehow indestructible.

Presumably none of this ran through the mind of 11-year-old Tyler Broome when he tried the aforementioned stunt - he just wanted to give it a go. But now the youngster has been left with horrific injuries consistent with those seen in fighter pilots.

He was encouraged to recreate the YouTube stunt known as the 'roundabout of death' - and was later found unconscious near a playground roundabout, left with possible damage to his brain and vision.

The young boy had been encouraged to sit in the middle of the roundabout as it was spun at high speed using the rear wheel of a motorcycle by a group of youths.

It is believed he was seriously injured after being subjected to extreme levels of gravitational force - or G-force - normally only experienced by pilots and astronauts.

It's thought that the G-force forced fluid and blood into the youngster's brain, causing damage to his vision and giving him bulging eyes.

In shocking footage circulating online, Tyler appears to have passed out during the ride but the teens around him do not appear to realise, and continued to rev the engine.

Tyler was at a local park with his friend when the pair were approached by a group of older teenagers - one with a motorcycle, according to Tyler's mum, Dawn Hollingworth.

Dawn, 51, says the group tried to recreate the YouTube stunt in which the rear wheel of a motorbike is placed against the roundabout to spin it at high speed on Wednesday.

She says Tyler was encouraged to sit in the middle of the roundabout while it was sent spinning, subjecting the boy to enormous G-forces. Dawn is now waiting by his bedside and hoping that the swelling on his brain will subside.

Dawn, of Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, said: "I don't recognise my child - he is on the verge of having a stoke. Tyler sat on the roundabout, and the boy who came over was about 17. Tyler doesn't know him, they are not friends.

"He puts his motorbike on the floor, gets the roundabout spinning at such a speed. When they all stopped, the group just cleared off - it is bullying."

Tyler had to be immediately rushed to the Queens Medical Centre, in Nottingham for treatment for severe injuries.

Dawn claims his injuries were so rare hospital staff had never witnessed this before and had to research it before they could treat him.

Dawn adds: "The injuries were so extreme, he just looked like the Elephant Man. They have never seen it before, they are going to make a medical report from it.

"His head has completely swelled up, his blood vessels have burst, his eyes look alien. His vision is blurry. You can manage a broken arm but this? He doesn't remember it, he doesn't remember the detail."

The original 'roundabout of death' video, which has over seven million views on YouTube, shows two people getting on a roundabout feature in a park, while another revs a motorbike which causes it to spin at an alarming rate of speed.

Dawn wrote on Facebook: "A decent young lad who I only know as Liam who lives in Tuxford who entered the park and saw my son laying on the ground ran and called an ambulance.

"My son remains in hospital with the threat of a stroke if his head swelling doesn't go down to release the pressure.

"I could have easily lost my son tonight and wouldn't want any parent going through what my family are tonight."

Dawn adds: "The bruises will take four to six weeks but doctors just don't know how long internal symptoms will take.

"We are just taking each day as it comes.

"There needs to be some discussion about banning these videos after what's happened to my son."

A Nottinghamshire police spokesman said: "Police are investigating after a boy sustained serious head injuries at a park in Tuxford Wednesday (12 September). The boy fell off a roundabout in Ashvale Park after a moped is believed to have been used to spin it around.

"The boy remains at the QMC in a serious but stable condition. If anyone has any video footage of the incident, or was in the area at the time, please call us on 101, quoting incident number 62 of 13 September 2018."

A 10-year-old boy in Missouri is recovering after he was attacked by wasps and fell from a tree house face-first on to a meat skewer.

The thin spike that went through Xavier Cunningham's head "miraculously" missed his eyes, brain, spinal cord and major blood vessels.

He fell down from a tree house when the freak accident occurred on Saturday.

Kansas University Hospital told local media he is expected to recover fully, although his voice may be affected.

A team of Kansas University doctors successfully removed the square rod - which made for a trickier surgery than a rounded skewer due to the sharp edges - over several hours.

Xavier was playing in a tree house at his home in Harrisonville, Missouri, when yellow jacket wasps began stinging him.

He fell from the tree house and landed directly on a foot-long (30cm) metal meat skewer. The skewer penetrated around six inches into the boys skull.

Xavier's mother Gabrielle Miller told Kansas City Star that she saw her son walk into the house, screaming, with the rod "just sticking out" of his head.

"I'm dying Mom, I can feel it," Mrs Miller recalled him telling her on the way to hospital.

Xavier was taken to local hospital, transferred to hospital in Kansas City and again transferred to the University of Kansas hospital where he would eventually undergo surgery.

His injury had no active bleeding and had avoided his eyes, brainstem, spinal cord and blood vessels, which enabled doctors to call in expert surgeons before attempting the removal surgery on Sunday morning.

Koji Ebersole, director of endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Health System, told the Star: "You couldn't draw it up any better. It was one in a million for it to pass 5 or 6 inches through the front of the face to the back and not have hit these things."

He said the biggest concern while removing the rod was the blood vessels in the boy's neck.

Dr Ebersole called the boy's recovery "miraculous".

"I have not seen anything passed to that depth in a situation that was survivable, let alone one where we think the recovery will be near complete if not complete," he told the Star.

Please don't portray the Dutch as peace loving angels, it makes you seem irrationally anti British. Foreign Affairs / Re: Two Russians Named As UK Novichok Suspects (CCTV Photos) by AbujaBlue: 4:17pm On Sep 05, 2018
What happens now?

The decision to name two Russian individuals as suspects in the Skripal case is a significant development - raising the level of evidence on which the British government's charges are based and potentially giving added weight to calls for additional international sanctions against Moscow.

The US, along with a swathe of Britain's allies, expelled a significant number of Russian diplomats (many thought to be intelligence agents) in the wake of the initial evidence that a Russian military grade nerve agent had been used in the Salisbury attack.

Britain will be hoping that other countries may now show more enthusiasm for stepped-up sanctions.

The Metropolitan Police said the two men arrived at Gatwick Airport from Moscow on 2 March and stayed at the City Stay Hotel in Bow Road, east London.

On 4 March they travelled to Salisbury - having also visited for reconnaissance the previous day - where Mr Skripal's front door was contaminated with Novichok.

Officers believe a modified perfume bottle was used to spray the door.

The pair flew from Heathrow to Moscow later that night.

While traces of Novichok were found in the London hotel room, there is no risk to other guests who were staying at the hotel at the time, police said.

They now want to hear from anyone who was a guest there from 4 March to 4 May.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he had been assured by Transport for London and police that there was no risk to public health in London.

Police said Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley were later exposed to Novichok after handling a contaminated container, labelled as Nina Ricci Premier Jour perfume.

Mr Rowley told police he found the box containing the small bottle and an applicator - all later found to be counterfeit - in a charity bin.

He tried to put the two parts together and got some of the contents on himself. His partner Ms Sturgess applied some of the contents to her wrists and became unwell.

The bottle, with a modified nozzle, had contained a "significant amount" of Novichok, Scotland Yard said.

Mr Basu said: "We don't yet know where the suspects disposed of the Novichok they used to attack the door, where Dawn and Charlie got the bottle that poisoned them, or if it is the same bottle used in both poisonings."

But he added that "the manner in which the bottle and packaging has been adapted makes it a perfect cover for smuggling the weapon into the country, and a perfect delivery method for the attack against the Skripal's front door".

Mr Basu confirmed that the two poisoning cases were related.

"It now forms one investigation," he said. "We do not believe Dawn and Charlie were deliberately targeted, but became victims as a result of the recklessness in which such a toxic nerve agent was disposed of."

Foreign Affairs / Two Russians Named As UK Novichok Suspects (CCTV Photos) by AbujaBlue: 4:14pm On Sep 05, 2018
Two Russian nationals have been named as suspects in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

The men, using the names Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, are thought to be officers from Russia's military intelligence service, the PM said.

Scotland Yard and the CPS say there is enough evidence to charge the men.

Mr Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok in March.

Det Sgt Nick Bailey also fell ill after responding to the incident in Salisbury.

Police are linking the attack to a separate Novichok poisoning on 30 June, when Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley became unwell at a house in Amesbury, about eight miles from Salisbury.

Ms Sturgess died in hospital on 9 July. Mr Rowley was discharged from hospital on 20 July.

Speaking in the Commons, Prime Minister Theresa May said the government had concluded, from intelligence provided by UK agencies, that the men were part of the GRU intelligence service.

The poisoning was "not a rogue operation" and was "almost certainly" approved at a senior level of the Russian state, she said.

"We must now step up our collective efforts specifically against the GRU," she added.

Mrs May promised "the full range of tools from across our national security apparatus" would be used to "counter the threat" caused by Russia.

She condemned the "despicable attack" which "left four people fighting for their lives and one innocent woman dead".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the use of military-grade nerve agent on the streets of Britain was an "outrage and beyond reckless".
Media captionTheresa May gave a statement at Prime Minister's Questions

The two suspects, believed to have been using aliases, travelled on Russian passports and are thought to be aged about 40.

The CPS is not applying to Russia for the extradition of the two men, as Russia does not extradite its own nationals.

But a European Arrest Warrant has been obtained in case they travel to the EU.
'Doesn't mean much'

Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters the names of the two Russian men suspected in the poisoning "do not mean anything to me".

Andrey Kortunoy, director general of the Russian International Affairs Council, said the Kremlin will question everything the UK has said and "the fact that you have two photos and two maybe fake names doesn't mean too much".

Russia's RIA news agency has since reported that Russia's charge d'affaires in London - the embassy's top diplomat - was summoned by the UK on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Interfax news agency reports that Britain's ambassador to Russia has met with the Russian foreign ministry.
Image caption Yulia and Sergei Skripal fell ill after Mr Skripal's front door was sprayed with Novichok

Sue Hemming, CPS director of legal services, said there was enough evidence "to provide a realistic prospect of conviction" and that it was "clearly in the public interest to charge Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov".

The offences include conspiracy to murder Sergei Skripal; the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal, Yulia Skripal and Nick Bailey; the use and possession of Novichok contrary to the Chemical Weapons Act; and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Yulia Skripal and Nick Bailey.

Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, said on Wednesday that Det Sgt Bailey "continues to make good progress but remains off work".

Celebrities / BBC Presenter Rachel Bland Dies Aged 40 After Being Given Just Days To Live by AbujaBlue: 11:16am On Sep 05, 2018
BBC presenter Rachael Bland has died at the age of 40, almost two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her family confirmed she died peacefully at home in the early hours of this morning.

Bland was a familiar voice on Radio 5 Live as a newsreader and presenter, and won praise for co-hosting You, Me and the Big C, a podcast about cancer.

She has also documented her battle with the disease on an award-winning blog.

Following the announcement, Rachael's husband, Steve said in a statement: "She was an incredibly talented broadcaster as well as a wonderful and much loved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, wife and, most importantly to her, a mother to her precious little Freddie."

"We all take such huge comfort and pride from the amazing and tireless work she has done since her diagnosis to reduce the stigma around cancer and prove that it is possible to live life to the fullest even when facing huge challenges on a daily basis. At the end, even though her body was at its weakest, her voice was at its strongest and most powerful.

He describes her as "perfect in every way", adding "we will miss her more than words can say".

In August, the Cardiff-born broadcaster said she was writing a memoir to leave for her two-year-old son Freddie as a "love letter to my beautiful boy".

She began her BBC career more than 15 years ago as Rachael Hodges and married fellow BBC journalist Steve Bland in 2013.

As well as appearing on 5 Live, she worked as a news presenter on the BBC News Channel, BBC World and BBC North West Tonight.

She was diagnosed with primary triple-negative breast cancer in November 2016 after finding a lump under her arm.

The presenter began chemotherapy just after Christmas that year, had a mastectomy the following July and went into an immunotherapy clinical trial this May, but the cancer had spread too far for her to stay on that treatment.

Throughout her battle, she earned admiration for her dignified and positive outlook, and for her efforts to give an honest portrayal of cancer on her podcast - with the tagline "Putting the CAN in cancer" - and her blog, titled Big C Little Me.

Rachael presented the podcast with fellow cancer sufferers Lauren Mahon and Deborah James. They spoke to celebrity guests and addressed practical matters including hair loss, tips for dealing with finances and telling your nearest and dearest.

"The whole sharing process has been very cathartic," Rachael wrote in an online article earlier this month. "It's been a real support to know that people have found them so helpful through their treatment, but in a selfish way they've helped me just as much."

But the 40-year old also frequently spoke about how her biggest fear was leaving Freddie without a mother.
Image caption Bland co-hosted You, Me and the Big C with Lauren Mahon and Deborah James

"I'm not scared of dying," she wrote in The Daily Telegraph in August. "I only fear for those I leave behind. For my darling Freddie... for Steve and our families."

She added: "Steve and I don't discuss how he'll cope without me, but we do talk about all the things I want him to do with Freddie when I'm gone.

"He's quite an emotional man, so I know he'll do a lot of crying. But he is also the most amazing father and will keep going and stay strong for our son's sake."

Bland said she was looking for a publisher for her memoir, which she described as "my love letter to my beautiful boy that I hope will leave the imprint of me and my love for him around him forever".

In her article published on The Huffington Post, Bland revealed that the book was almost finished. She also said she was wrapping presents for her son to open on every birthday until he's 21.

"Personal effects like my notepads - so he can see what my writing was like. Or the perfume he helped pick out for me earlier this year so he'll remember my smell."
