Nairaland GeneralConcerning Our Dependence On Technology by africanboy(op): 11:02am On Feb 22, 2006
I went to a friend's place to pay a courtest visit. Funny enough, I did not have credit on my phone and did not want to call. I decided to drop a note. THE PROBLEM. I couldnt really remember how to write short notes. I had to write it like 4 times before I felt comfortable. I still forgot to put a date.

I had to just wonder, are we getting smarter with all these technologies aroudn us doing all the work, or getting duller.

Seun had to chastise me when I first joined this forum to stop using shorthand in my posts. I was used to SMS. Texting is the closest to writing that I have done in the past 2 years. Normally, I take a dictation on my phone, sync it with my PC, convert it to text and spel check. Oh, printer nko? My fingers hardly work nowadays except the thumbs. Ok, now am typing. Agreed.

Let ponder,
- when last did you really hear silience? Turn off every gadget emitting noise in your house and listen to the silence.
- when last did you walk over to your friend's house, instead of IM, Texting, taking a ride or bike?
- when last did you do manual calculations? Ask anyone for te result of a calculation and you will surely see phones, calculators, computers flying out from different directions. How do you manually calculate square root? I can't remember.
- when last did u hear a yoruba (please replace wit your mother tongue) song with @ least 1 english word? even lagbaja's skentele skontolo has an english word - "ko si fashion kan, to ju tiwa lo"

Any1 in the house having similar thot?

Nigeria has over 120million people, with contributors from outside, and u r worried about less than a million expressing their views. Thrash

Am a free thinker, I personally dont operate under any specific religion, though I was brought up with a not too harsh christian background. I dropped with when it didnt seem to work like I expected. Never tried Islam, dont think I would.

so much beef about d guy. really its his fault.

as a producer, maybe he is ok, but as a TV personality he is WACK. did i forget an exclamation mark, ok, WACK!

what did he mean by "5 million naira video" - Eddy Montana's Eddy ti de

have you seen Jazzman Olofin's Jump? The song is tight and the video was until, until K decided he had to be in the video. Y?
The rep went 270 degrees down and I never watched it again. Over 6 months now.

Someone tell him his site is WACK!. Remembered the exclamation,
I have to watch him float around like a ghost before I can enter the main site? Jeez? Blank pages? Undoing,

ID requires a category of his own on NL.COM for discussion

This is one funny? topic, i think am starting. One I dont really believe in spirits and the like. They may exist, who cares?

There is a roundabout I pass through on my way to work, Igbo Igunnu, where people place sacrifices for spirits to consume. One day, I say a pack of Lucozade with the sacrifice, raising the questions?

ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 4:04pm On Feb 10, 2006
@Fdeveloper, u r indeed right. i might seem to be selling 9ja short, but I am only recounting "the experiences I have had". You are somewhere else, like sbu where things are better and operate in the normal way. some of us are just "here".

most symbian apps are written using C++, some VB, and as I am sitting in my chair today, i still prefer symbian native apps to java apps on my phone. i have a java app (first aid - display a text of first aid tips) and some java games - incredibles, highway 3d, chips challenge) I have about 20+ other apps and they are not java, simply because as a consumer i feel more comfortable with the non java apps. the java apps are cool, dont get me wrong. its just my taste.

@sbu, u work in d work, earning pounds or whatever, do u know what it means to work on your own in Nigeria? some places in 9ja. no bad mouthing. thats not the topic. i still dont want to leave. but here where i work, usually 1 person has to handle every aspect of a project. urs may be better, i am telling you mine.

an experience, a client (director general of budget of one of our states) called on friday morning requesting for a budget process management solutions (web based) to be delivered on monday, and he specifically did not want an off the shelf solution because they are too expensive and do not understand their own "specific" workings. i got there on monday truly with functionality, all he complained about was the interface. thats how a lot of clients are in nigeria, maybe elsewhere.

this same man is used to quickbooks, but for one limitation (quickbookx can only take a maximum of 99,999,999:99) which will not work well for ministries considering our poor money value. to him, any application that has better functionality must look as fine as quickbooks. of course, functionality must be present, but interface is very important.

java is just to hard to learn, and i dont have time to take extra classes. i think i'll focus on inter-platform web solutions
ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 9:42am On Feb 09, 2006
like i said before, i tried learning java, but in a country where (esp for me) you had to work 25hours a day to keep soul together. i had to learn the easiest language that would bring food to my table fastest.

still i dont like java, not because it is slow to learn. we were started on basic and moved to visual basic. truly, nigeria is still a microsoft country. virtually almost all clients in nigeria use the windows platform so i can be afraid of running out of clients to develop for.

and if i want inter-platform, i still wont use java.

repeating: java on my mobile phone is not my first choice when it comes to applications. i use nokia 6600 and i have numerous applications on my 128mb memory card. there are java games only, no apps. all my apps are symbian apps. they are just more comfortable to use. faster. more interesting.

i dont have a java apps on my PC, both home and office. what the heck! is this forum powered by java? maybe not. and it sure as hell is "tapping"

a typical client in nigeria (even enterprise companies and governments) will judge an interface first before the functionality...oh and you ust deliver fast.

still, Seun, create a tutorials category and let sbu do some teaching.

with the number of failed, failing, fallen, f**ked up marriages/relationships we have nowadays, i strongly believe there is such a thing as "true love", but it is much too difficult to achieve.

love is a commodity. u give it to the higest bidder.
i agree with "the devil in pink jacket", it is now a commodity, that experience i have

What's the point? Thot love was meant to last forever..
last forever? where does that come from, do u live forever?

a sister to a friend of mine was lectured about guy
what the guys say: i want to love you {mo fe fee e}
what the guys mean: i want to sleep with you {mo fe ba e sun }

Adedibu recently embarassed the nation by publicly saying he and Ladoja agreed to pay him (Adedibu) 1/4 of the 60+ million naira "Security Vote"

Now, thats the type of venture capitalism that operates mostly in 9ja.

ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 3:31pm On Feb 04, 2006
@poju, its all a matter of choice, i wouldnt advise anybody saying you must a particular language, @ least, i wont do that. pick a language, search the web, read book and pick one that you can work with.

there is not point studying linux languages if your clients work primarily with windows

@javaprogrammmers, is there any linux distro with a java virtual machine (not necessarily called that), or do your clients have to get the VM first.

considering that the essence of java is platform independence, i believe the .NEt framework is aiming for that,
before you lecture me on bugs and security flaws, i believe MS software is being attacked largely because it has a wide base. just think, if you had a virus that travels by "soft drinks", which of the following would you rather write the code for -
[li]coca-cola[/li]
[li]la casera[/li]
[li]any other bottled drink that is only drunk within a community[/li]
NO dont tell me, i know - you would pick Coca Cola, why? it has a large distribution has compared to the otrhers mentioned. but now viri/worm wirters are shiftig attention to lesser known programs like CorelDRAW (do you know coreldraw has its own version of the VBA?). they are even attacking "anti-virus software"

still have part of my head left for your biting off
ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 12:01pm On Feb 03, 2006
I wanted to go into JAVA some years after all the hype, I actually (like i said in my initiating thread) had someone try to force it down my throat. I appreciate the concepts brought about by Java (that has helped other developers bring us better products), but it just doesnt cut it with me.

Send me a "GOOD" GUI/IDE tool, and SDK and I will try it again even just for the sake of proving why it should be buried.

Java was an idea light years ahead of its time, but unfortunately it was not properly managed. From the hype, it seemed people would not rest until every electrical applicance had java programmes running on them.

As at now I am confortable using the tools I use
PC - VB, .NET, C, Delphi
Web - ASP, PHP,
Mobile - AppForge (for Symbian and Windows Mobile)
some others...
ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 11:52am On Feb 03, 2006
As much I dont appreciate being called a JERK, I will just ignore that.

the major promise of JAVA (which brought about all the hype), like I said is write once, run anywhere but that only seems true for codes like
import java.io.*;

public class HelloWorld{
 public static void main (String args[]){
        System.out.print("Hello World"wink;
  }
}
i dont have any client who would want console applications for their business processes, which means I have to build a GUI, and I must match what Microsoft is offering with Windows XP et al...

from your article
Oak would have to be completely platform independent, and function seamlessly regardless of the type of CPU in the device. For this reason, Oak was designed to be an interpreted language, since it would be practically impossible for a complied version to run on all available platforms
TravelLagos: 63rd Most Expensive City by africanboy(op): 10:58am On Feb 03, 2006
A study shows that Lagos is the 63rd most expensive city, with Oslo topping the list.

Among cities in sub-Saharan Africa, costs rose largely because of high inflation, the report said. Lagos in Nigeria (63rd), the Zambian capital Lusaka (91st) and Nairobi, Kenya (93rd) all experienced double-digit inflation. This had the greatest impact for Lusaka, Zambia, which rose 18 places in the ranking to No. 91.
Really don't know what to say.

I have a similar article with pictures on my blog @ http://streetlife.iblog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=14401

humans are the weakest link in any security setup. will allow access in a couple of days.

ProgrammingRe: .NET Framework And IDE: Will Microsoft Open Source Them? by africanboy(op): 9:51am On Feb 03, 2006
If Bill decides to go after Mono, i doubt it will succeed because it will only succeed in pushing the project more into the hand of linux coders. with the current tred on dark-nets, mono will oly get better.

napster was fragile becuase it had a central point of operation, gnutella is still pretty untouchable and other p2p networks. mono would just go the dsame way in my opinion. if i were ms, i would focus on software as services to ensure google doesnt take over.
ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by africanboy(op): 9:47am On Feb 03, 2006
@sbucareer, first and foremost, java might try to seem like nice programming language, i use nokia 6600 and have a couple of java games on them, but i when i bored and need games to play on my phone, they would be the last i would touch. symbian sis games are just better with better graphics.

java applications on the PC, nah, not interested. i started using the PC in 1999 and got exposed to some win3.1 for workgroup. java apps remind of just that. why would i want to use an application that loks like that.

java is not an evolution of c++, concepts differ entirely, in my opinion.

i want to write a simple program in java and i must code the interface like i were use turbo C in DOS. no thanks.
i know there are GUI builders - jbuilder etc, but even their interface is not as conducive the "visual studio" anybody agree?

case sensitivity in coding kills me. period.

with the current trend of software as services, how does java hope to catch up, will every1 have to download a 130mb SDK to compile a source code. maybe not.

jscope should probably be renamed to jnetscope or something similar.

i think joftech meant CGI or something similar.
