I first knew of the phalanx when I saw the movie, 300.

The Greek (Spartan) King Leonidas used it to stall the advance of the Persians with just 300 of his best warriors; really surprising his enemies.

I also love movies where battles are realistically fought in formations;

Prince tells his commander "Get them in line"
Commander bellows, "Get the men back into lines"

Info is cascaded down to the men at the forefront;
"Front line, puuush!"

It's really nice watching battle formations and strategies of old.

I saw Shaka Zulu too.
Lol, they had a traditional distance between warring factions where spears and arrows are thrown at each other. Almost like dodge ball.

I think the Shaka was famous for going against that convention with preference for close combat.

If you can recommend more movies, I'd appreciate. Prefer more of European empires to Asian dynasty movies.
You are right. Shaka's armies and their famous buffalo horn formation used the pincer action extensively.

Breaking enemy lines and encircling forces is still a major aspect of warfare today. It is just not as obvious and as dramatic as in ancient/medieval times.

I think most of the European series are well known. The trick is to find one that Hollywood has not bastardized.

1) Rome

This is the best there is. They stopped it prematurely after 2 seasons because of production costs. Historically acurate, excellent writing and acting.

2) The White Queen

3) The White Princess

4) Spartacus

5) Vikings

6) The Last Kingdom

Now I see you like unrealistic twists and turns, overt cliffhangers to end an episode and leave you hooked for the next one, that's why you are dissing Breaking Bad and The Wire

Anywhere I see that kind of writing, I avoid it. After Lost use my brain play from season 4 to season 6 only to end up in nonsense, I can't respect that kind of writing. I saw my mates watching Prison Break, I viewed an episode or two, when I saw they were using unrealistic cliffhangers to end each episode, I stayed away from it.
You watched Lost up to Season 6?

You have forgiving spirit.

By Season 2 when I had deciphered their wicked plan I dumped the thing. God no go shame us.

Ertugrul used to talk about Alp Arslan alot in that series.

I'll check it out.
Yeah. He was the greatest Turk that had ever lived as at the time of Ertugrul. He was the benchmark for a Turk in terms courage and military ability.

His real name was Mohammed Chagri. Alp Arslan was just his nickname meaning Warrior Lion or something like that.

I have watched six flying dragon, I will try out deep rooted tree

It seem you are more into historical/ political film. I beg recommend some for me
1) Three kingdoms

It is about the breakup of the Han Dynasty. Lots of great characters here including Cao Cao, one of the most devious characters in all of history and his protege the equally diabolical but infinitely more patient Sima Yi.

2) Qin Empire 1, 2, 3 and Qin Dynasty.

Watch it in that order to follow how the Qin dominated the Warring States period and unified China.

3) The King’s War

About how the Qin fell and the Han took over.

There are a few other good ones but the subtitling will drive you crazy.

That was the famous pincer move that was used a lot in World War 2 especially in the battle of Stalingrad to surround the German forces of about 200k
Technically I don’t even think the Stalingrad encirclement was a great tactical pincer by the Russians as such. It was more of the Germans pushing forward stupidly and refusing to retreat (because if Hitler’s mad instructions) and the encirclement happened naturally as more and more Russians arrived to their flanks and back.
Once the encirclement took place though the Russians squeezed the Germans to death in an unbreakable vice.

The great tactical encirclement battles that I can remember are Changping by Bai Qi, Cannae by Hannibal, Tannenberg by Ludendorff.

Khalid Ibn-Walid also used it. Alp Arslan also used it at Manzikert.

Battles of Marathon and Hydaspes can also be called pincer movements.

Larride on that Osmanonline website there is a series about Alp Arslan as well. He was the greatest ruler of the Seljuk Turks who came before the Ottomans. If you liked Ertugrul you wll like that one too.

That chaotic fighting na rubbish true true. 😂

If I dey that period, na me go dey japa pass for war.
In an ancient/medieval battle you don’t even want your side exposed to the opponent not to talk of fighting 1v1 and exposing your BACK.

That is why they stand side by side in tightly packed formation. The line must not break and the formation must not be encircled otherwise the battle is lost.

Yeah. But I prefer proper battles with proper battle order not melee fighting with dozens of people just fighting in a chaotic fashion. It is very unrealistic.

From ancient to medieval times battles were almost always fought in one form or the other of the Greek phalanx, whereby soldiers fought side by side with their comrades and didn’t break ranks with each other until maybe late in the battle.

Even the Roman maniple formation evolved from the Greek phalanx.

Examples of this can be seen in the The Battle of the Bastards in GOT or the battle scenes in the movie Alexander.

Battles are not just a set of 1v1 fights all over the place in chaotic fashion.

Theres this Turkish TV show I watched on Netflix sometimes ago called Resurrection: Ertuğrul

The show is very captivating but fucking long. I think season 1 was 64 episode or so.

It's a show about Ertuğrul, the father of the founder of the Ottoman Empire.

I recommend it for those that love history and adventure show. (It has a Muslim theme)
I have watched it. Dirilis: Ertugrul.

There is a sequel called Kurulus: Osman. About his son Osman.

I don’t think most people were will like it. It is an acquired taste 😆 and you have to be really interested in history and culture.

I like the intrigue but I don’t like the endless skirmishes without proper huge battles.

JUMONG was my first Asian historical series. Year that show was so popular but mehn dey dragged it out like elastic. That is one thing about Asian historical series. They rarely do multiple seasons but that 1 season might be 60 episodes.

I think there are better and more realistic Chinese/Korean historical series than Jumong now but probably too realistic to be as popular. Jumong was a quasi-superhero. grin

Na that 0 loss gan gan be their problem. We have fights like Fury/Usyk, Canelo/Benevidez, Bivol/Beterbiev and other top fights waiting to happen and these guys keep ducking themselves or at least one of them ducks. The governing bodies do not help at all, they don't sanction fights anymore, some boxers now fight just Once in 2/3 years and they are happy. I was so happy the day that yeye Okolie lost, baba dey fight just once in a blue Moon. Boxing is dying a gradual death while there's so many talented boxers, but these days, no one wants to give anyone a shot. Fights needs to be made, everyone is concerned about the money now and holding on to titles. When titles too plenty, wetin we go expect before
Too many belts. Too many promoters. Too many ways to make EASY money EARLY in careers.

There is a reason it is almost unheard of for a great boxer to come from a wealthy family.

In the 70s and 80s the only sure way to make money was for the best fighters to fight the best fighters. Now there are belts everywhere and with social media hype any decent fighter can make life altering money.

The last point is the obsession with the 0 that was engendered by Floyd. You are right on that one. We now see boxers tap dancing around each other to avoid losing their undefeated record.

Those 3 fights you mentioned should have opened organically but fans are being cheated.

Are Mebude, Bobb, and Borges rated higher than Jack and Tyler?

Rumor says United are about to buy the duo from City. The negotiation is said to be “toff”.
I heard that Fletcher’s boys are good but it is still voice of mouth as I have not seen them play. They are younger than those 3 I have mentioned.

Mebude, Bobb, and Borges on the other hand have inflicted maximum damage against us. My eyes have seen and it is kind of stuff that causes nightmares and PTSD.

I don’t know if it’s just cause of the gulf in the quality of youth coaches but the bullying has been going on for a few years now. It started slightly with dem Foden and Sancho but it has now reached assault levels.
