It would seem Muhammed wanted to assimilate into his new religion, some of the beliefs of the Pagans, Christians and Jews in the hopes of having a broad appeal to these groups of people. Appealing to the pagans was a necessity since they were easily the majority in the Arabian peninsula at the time. However, it was equally crucial to appeal to Christians and Jews because he had burrowed many narratives from their scriptural and oral traditions (e.g. about Moses, Jesus, Adam, Satan etc). He therefore needed them to validate the claims he made to the pagan Arabs. Unfortunately for him, the Jewish elite saw through his shenanigans because he inadvertently incorporated some of their apocryphal and outrightly fabricated traditions (e.g. The story about Abraham and Idols or that of The Queen of Sheeba) into his creed. This made the Jews soundly reject him. Naturally, he felt riled and humiliated by the Jews, especially after all of the perceived overtures and concessions he had made. Not wanting the fragile faith he had instilled in the hearts and minds of the pagan Arabs to dissipate, he then allowed his arrogance and narcissism get the better of him. According to many hadiths on record, he wiped out the post-puberty men of a whole Jewish tribe in Medina, made the women and children slaves and usurped all of their wealth; under the pretext that they betrayed him by colluding with his enemies during the battle of the trench. (Sahih Bukhari Volume 4 Book 52 Number 68) Of course, that excuse is preposterous and flimsy considering he killed every (post-puberty) male member of the tribe, including those who must have been too young to have schemed against him. In today's language, that would be genocide. |
DDeliverer:The curious irony in this is that like bokoharam, you have determined that you are the ultimate authority on what constitutes a "true" Muslim. Forgive me then, if I struggle to see the difference between you and Bokoharam. The dangers of know-all and inflexible certainty. |
anthoniosp:Let's examine your atheist trumping template. 1. LOGIC COUNTERS LOGIC: in an argument when asked to prove that God exist the simplest way to counter is to ask the atheist to prove that God does not exist you might think its dumb but actually it works, atheist do not and will never have a proof that God does not exist but in an argument they keep bringing reasons as to why they think God does not exist either but they all keep bringing the same dumb excuse that ''we have never seen him, i have never touched him'Yes, logic counters logic, but you cannot counter logic with a logical fallacy. What you have explained up there is a kind of logical fallacy known as Onus Probandi, that is, shifting the burden of proof. It is logically impossible to prove a negative (e.g. God does not exist), hence why the burden of proof is usually on the claimant (i.e. there is god) 2. THE HIDDEN PERSONALITY: never approach an atheist with a particular pattern do not come as a christian or muslim or budhist, with that pattern they are usually forced to go into the field of science, where the argument becomes easy to winThis is another kind of logical fallacy called the Equivocation Fallacy. If you want to argue for the existence of god or any other entity for that matter, you must first define what that entity is, otherwise, it is impossible to make your case. If you define god as an ant for instance, then of course, it makes no logical sense to disagree with the existence of god. But if you define god as an ant with trunk of an elephant, then your conception about god can be questioned. If you define god as 'some entity', you will be technically correct, and everybody would agree god exists, but the lack of precision makes your statement meaningless. Consider an examination scenario where you are asked for the answer to 1+1. If you say your answer is 'some number', you will be technically correct, but you'll never get any points for such an answer. Put simply, the meaningfulness of your claim (i.e. god exists) is directly proportional to the precision with which you definite the subject (what god are you referring to?) 3. KNOWLEDGE OF THE OPPONENT:the main points that most atheist use are evil, inability to see God and sometimes during critical cases theory of evolution.....but calm down my friends all the above are not proofs but mere reasons why one might doubt the existence of God, so before diving into an argument or debate simply get down ur points on all these readyYeah, okay 4. DONT BE THE FANATICS THERE: the best way to loose an argument against an atheist is using bible verses or quran qoutes in the argument instead use examples for the case of evil in the world donot go and start qouting what jesus said about the end times but instead use logic to battle logic example you can counter the question of ''why is there evil in the world if there is God?'' with '' the nigerian goverment have set out the constitution to the benefit of the people, the federal goverment knows what is best for the people but despite all the laws in the country people still kill and steal and people still rebel because the people are not forced to do things but have the will to choose either good or bad thing but when they do bad they are punished, so the problem is not evil but what do you do with your will''..hope you can see the exampleYour advise is spot on, but your analogy is anything but logical. The Nigerian government is not all powerful, nor did it create (free)will. Unless you are prepared to concede that god is not all powerful. But first, you must define god (See my response to 2) 5.SCIENCE VS RELIGION: in atheist debates there must be a throw back to science and the theory of evolution and this is where you can grip them..they say that all matter nd all things came from energy and its changes..ask them ''what caused the first change because if energy of the same type all are in the same enviroment there isnt soposed to be a change for example if all energy forms before creation was magnetic energy then it should have still remained as at that'', another good question that atheist cant have an answer to is ''if we where created from energy then why would energy create us in form of perishable things, why arent we like terminators and roots that all we need to do is feed and live?''....another question is ''if we sy God doesnt exist then since when did we know what was right and what was wrong?''.......Your petitions don't make any sense at all. Atheists do not claim to know/have all the answers. In fact, their level of knowledge varies drastically from person to person, and they disagree a lot, even on subjects within the realms of science. It's the obsessive compulsive need of religionists to impose an answer on everything that is the problem here. and finally know that before you start an argument against an atheist that after that argument both you and the atheist are thrown into periods of thought where you might consider being an atheist and the atheist might consider being a religious personWhat is your point? |
rationalmind:Sambo is what? A Buddhist? |
makzeze:This is a parody account. IBB doesn't talk like this |
coolscott:Wow Sherlock! You're so perceptive. All of that analysis to determine that the document was produced this year, when the date clearly says 21/01/2015. Lol! It's a statement of result produced by an institution, at the given instant a requester makes a request. It's not a certificate, it's a certification to attest to the fact that it is on record that the bearer actually took the stated exams and had the grades represented in the statement. Did you notice also that Buhari's school was Provincial Secondary School, yet the school on the statement reads Government Secondary School? Yes, it is on record that Buhari took WASSCE, with or without his certificate. Certificates might be missing, but official records are ever enduring, so put your perceptive skills to better uses than analysing statements of results for exams written 53 years ago. |
psucc:What makes you think he bought them, and they aren't rented? |
ebamma:Oops, looks like I touched a nerve...lol |
Ifeann:make a pick i really can't be bothered to educate on the plight of the black man in America and why they make up the majority of inmates .. and it can't be paralleled with islam.. incase u didn't notice the black man is not a religion.you don't need to educate me on why more blacks are incarcerated than others I know why. Nevertheless, the white man who sees the statistics and turns a blind eye to the root cause, that is, the abject economic policies of the state towards black people, would be tempted to assume there is something that makes blacks naturally gravitate towards criminality. I hope you understand that I am not trying to make a religious analogy here because this point is lost on you. You seem to ignore the lopsided political injustices meted to Muslim majority populations by the Western powers, and are all too happy to play on numbers. You're not the only one who can tell stories with numbers, you know? I see your point though, why should you bother educating me when you've failed to educate yourself first? I can't be bothered to educate you on christain theology. .... if you don't know the context of old testament wars and laws then there isn't much i can do to convince u that Islam's prescribed violence is of a senseless and brutal nature and is not comparable with the wars and killings described in the Old Testament. ..Please don't bother educating me on how god instructing its followers to kill every man, woman, child, except virgins is not "violence of a senseless and brutal nature" (Numbers 31) or how good ordained that the punishment for a kid who curses their parent is death (exodus 21:17). If you try to educate me, you'll be wasting your Mb and time. You really shouldn't throw stones when you live in a glass house. i can't be bothered to educate u on the new convent which is explained in the new testament which is binding on christains hence u don't see christains bond by the old testament laws. This is why christains are peaceful and don't go around blowing them selves up to make a point. Please don't bother educating me on how god commanded genocides for thousands of years, only to change after sacrificing its innocent son, who wasn't really sacrificed because it brought him back to life. I would feel tortured if you did! I really won't argue with u since u still have alot to learn on these issuesNo, don't argue with me... Go educate yourself first. |
Rich4god:I'm not sure what's happening in Niger, turkey and other Muslim countries. Although, I have no doubt that many Muslims organise mass rallies against BH, ISIS and AlQuaida, to the extent that many have picked up arms to counterbalance the tyranny of the aforementioned groups. The idea that Muslims aren't speaking out against them is fictitious. To cite but a few examples, we have the civilian JTF in Borno and environs, whom I'm sure are mostly Muslims, we have the many Shia, Kurdish and Sunni militia who are working hand in hand to neutralise ISIS in Iraq and Syria. We have the Muslim governments of Qatar and Jordan who have consistently channeled a lot of funds to the cause of eliminating the threats of al-Qaida. That there exists very sparse acknowledgement of what they do doesn't diminish the fact that they do it. Perhaps a more important day to look forward to would be when more Christians realise that these terrorists are a common enemy to both themselves and other innocent Muslims, and afterwards, rather than point hands, they join hands with their Muslim brothers in the arduous but necessary task of eliminating these terrorists. |
Ifeann:Okay if you want to knw the root cause of the terrorism we are facing today. that's fine, ur name is agentofAllah, and u say u aare irreligious my guess is that u are an ex muslim or non practising Muslim. .. if you have a quran close by open it and read. ..i won't quote Verses for you. . Do the research ypu self. .. Get a bible do the same. ..I've read the Quran and the bible, and they are both interesting in the sense that they compete with each other on violent themed contents. I personally think the bible edges the Quran in violence. Yes i agree with you, religion do make sane people do insane things as well as make insane people do sane things. But it depends on the religion u submit to my friend. ..Lol... So you say. Please don't take my bluntness and "matter of fact" approach as condescension. You are mistaking crass representation of statistics as bluntness and "matter of fact". To be clear, I'm all for bluntness, but your interpretation of "bluntness" is quite shallow, as you seem happy dwelling on the perfunctory anecdotes that reinforce your deeply entrenched prejudices. Go read the first comment you addressed to me. It was not blunt, it was just provocative: "Islam is a death cult". Since according to your brand of statistics, correlation implies causation, let's play a game called the FactCheck. Statistically, the percentage of incarcerated blacks in the United states is somewhere between 50% & 60%. So let me throw your question back at you. Why are blacks...what's that phrase you used?... "full of drama"? Why can't you people just be peaceful in the the States? Below is afunny pic to make u smile, visit http://www.councilofexmuslims.com/ for more pics that's a funny picture. I'm sure the message of Islam will resonate with most pigs; something that is bound to raise not a few eyebrows from members of the bovine family.dude since u brought this up. Let's discuss more on this issue... why do u think islam is efficient at convincing sane people to commit acts of terror while on the other handthe majority of Muslims seem opposed to jihad even though the Qur'an approves fighting idisbelievers in the name of Allah . .. what is your honest take on this. ..The majority of Muslims seem opposed to violent jihad for the same reasons majority of Christians seem opposed to the violent verses in the bible: Such teachings are anachronistic. Yet, there are still fundamentalists who believe god wants them to act on his behalf. |
False reportage: Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Thursday dismissed claims that he had endorsed some politicians as his presidential and governorship candidates ahead of the February elections. Soyinka, in a piece titled, ‘Identity Thieves and the 2015 Election Peace Accord,’ warned those spreading the rumour of his purported endorsement of candidates “to be less gullible, and avoid becoming cheap conduits for the deception industry.” He said, “Let me thus seize the occasion of the Abuja accord to state categorically that I have never made a statement endorsing any presidential or governorship contestant. All such attributions are fabrications by faceless, often self-appointed agents of deception, and should be publicly pilloried. “Whenever I choose to declare support for a candidate – as is my electoral right – I shall ensure that I deploy a medium that places my authorship beyond dispute.” Reacting to the peace pact signed by President Goodluck Jonathan and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Wednesday to ensure violence-free polls, Soyinka said he was impressed with the outcome of the meeting. He described the pact as a “positive step in the direction of democracy.” He commended the efforts of a former Secretary-General of the United Nation, Kofi Annan, and a former Secretary-General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, in ensuring the success of the accord. The Nobel Laureate said if the peace pact was adhered to with sincerity, it would ensure a wholesome space for future elections and avert further violence. “It might even come close to what the democratic ideal should be, as canvassed by others, including Governor Babatunde Fashola a few years ago,” Soyinka added. He, however, said he was disappointed that the communiqué issued after the peace meeting made no reference to the victims of political violence. He said, “From personal interest, however, I was disappointed that the communiqué makes no reference to the violence done to members of the electorate whose identities are stolen, abused and debased during this exercise. “It is rapidly becoming commonplace to encounter totally fictitious statements, even entire interviews published and attributed to unsuspecting authorship. This criminal proceeding has even involved the cloning of media mastheads to which non-existent interviews are then attached. To render it in local parlance, this is political 419, and of the most despicable brand. “While it would be unjust to place direct responsibility on the contestants, one must stress that they also have a moral responsibility to denounce these dirty tricksters in the strongest terms, even in their own interest. “The resentment inspired in victims of such cowardly conduct cannot but impact on their own political image. The media must also protect itself by taking necessary measures against such unprincipled confusionists. It is the democratic right of every citizen to know exactly who is saying what on issues that affect their political choices. “I take a less serious – indeed, near carnivalesque view of the opportunistic and sometimes de-contextualised use of genuine quotes from statements I have made in the past – that is a different matter entirely. As a non-pensioned writer, however, and thus dependent on the proceeds of intellectual property, such users should expect to hear from my literary agents. “I join General Abdulsalami and others in hoping that 2015 prove a live-and-learn election year, not a do-or-die!” http://www.punchng.com/news/i-didnt-endorse-any-candidate-soyinka/ |
buoye1:There is something very macabre about your mindset which I should point out: On the one hand, you've acknowledged that someone is on a peace mission, and then, not a line later, you're advising them to hold their peace? Wow!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU If somebody is trying to spread peace in a deeply fragmented society, you don't tell them to hold their peace, you bloody join the peace train and win more vociferous peace lovers over until the mischievous ones are grossly outnumbered and silenced.Let me end with this very beautiful phrase from Edmund Burke: All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing. There you have it! Keep holding your peace at your own peril!!! |
Ifeann:Listen mate, I'm irreligious, so the most convenient thing for me to do, if I were like you, that is, would be to cite the misadventures of the crusaders and the jihadis and conclude that religions make people do evil things. There is an element of truth in that disposition. Religion does enable otherwise sane people to do insane things. But there is more to it. I'm going one step further than just pointing fingers. I'm genuinely interested in knowing the root cause, rather than pontificating with a smug sense of superiority. If pointing fingers makes you feel better about yourself and your religion, by all means, go ahead. Quite frankly, I think all religions are a presumptuous and glorified gallimaufry of things; a bad marriage between gibberish and incredibly useful teachings, so forgive me if I don't engage you in your favourite contest of whose religion is better, it's simply because I neither find such discussions useful nor inspiring. When you're ready to have a real discussion about the root cause of terrorism, I'll be happy to engage you. |
Rich4god:They have failed to call their people to order? Listen to what you're saying. You're Nigerian, I presume? So how many crime peddling 419 Nigerians have you called to order for their crimes? How many times have you gone out to protest the criminality of Nigerians that give Nigeria a bad name? You need to be realistic with your demands, and stop pontificating. It is the responsibility of the law to deal with anybody who commits a crime. I don't expect you to call your 419 Nigerian brother to order, and I am not angry at you if you wish not to take responsibility for a crime you haven't committed either. |
Rich4god:Yes, we may also excuse the fact that they went on rampage massacring Many innocent Jews and Muslims in the process. Not to dwell much on that, what I find especially astounding is that you are perfectly willing to excuse the crimes of the crusaders (who killed in the name of their god) because they were responding to perceived injustices from the Muslims in the middle east (a political reality at the time), yet, you're unyielding when I propose that many Muslims are now doing the same in light of current political realities that make Western powers come across as oppressive. Did you read the article I shared of Karen Armstrong? It's here (http://www.salon.com/2014/11/23/karen_armstrong_sam_harris_anti_islam_talk_fills_me_with_despair/) if you missed it the first time. It puts a lot of things in perspective. To be clear, I do not excuse any of the groups. I'm just putting things in perspective for you, as you seem to miss my point. |
Ifeann:Listen mate, I'm the wrong person to aim your vile questions at. I can list as many things in the bible that makes the Christian holy text just as violent as the Quran, but that's not my problem today. Somebody is trying to start a sane interfaith dialogue, so you're expected to reciprocate with a sense of decorum, not hurling provocative nonsense and demanding answers. Neither Sameera025 nor myself owe you an answer or an apology. Feel free to bask in your retrogressive, belligerent mind set. You're not my cup of tea! |
truthman2012:The article you're referring to made no reference to God. The name "God Particle" is an abbreviation of "Goddamned particle", and was used as a marketing ploy to attract more attention to the discovery. Read what Leaderman, the originator of the name had to say about the name: This boson is so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive, that I have given it a nickname: the God Particle. Why God Particle? Two reasons. One, the publisher wouldn't let us call it the Goddamn Particle, though that might be a more appropriate titleRead HERE As for your ad-hominem, I shall not gratify it with a response. |
Rich4god:Read about the crusades. As for Bush's justification, check the hyperlink I provided in my comment. |
italo:I'm not having this discussion with you. Go read a little bit on history of the Crusades. In the process, thousands of innocent Jews and Muslims were massacred. |
Anomnity: I'll safely assume you've met this supposedly "most peaceful Muslim on earth". So may I ask you for his/her name I mean, you even have accurate statistics of what Muslims will do, quoting it to the nearest unit figure of a mere 99%.Tell me again about how you're only "targeting facts"! |
Rich4god:You're wrong! George Bush justified one of the greatest tragedies of modern history in the name of his god in the name of his god . Yet he invaded the middle east purely for political reasons. The crusaders of yesteryears, remember them? They also committed their crimes in the name of their lord. The Buddhists of Myanmar, they murder Muslims in the name of their religion. |
truthman2012:Are you serious mate? What do you know about the Higgs boson? Wow! I'm astounded!! |
Anomnity:When I was a Muslim, I wrote an article thanking Terry Jones, that American pastor who threatened to hold a mass Quran burning rally, for putting more money in the hands of Quran printers. Crucially, I never for once, imagined the pastor's inciting threats represented the views of other Christians. So even if Sameera claims she'll react violently, I don't see why that should be an objective gauge of Islam anymore than Terry Jones should be an objective gauge of Christianity. Maybe the question you really should ask is: What point is anybody who threatens to burn a religious text of another religion trying to make? It comes across as exceptionally hypocritical when you claim you're a pacifist. |
I want to start by commending sameera025 and rich4god for epitomising civility in this discourse, even in their occasional disagreements. This is the kind of example I wish to see others imbibe in interfaith dialogues. Some other people, in spite of Sameera's conciliatory tone, seem unable to move beyond their usual hostile and antagonistic disposition towards 'the other'. I find that very disappointing. I was once a Muslim, so I know that everything Sameera has said is true. I also know, however, that the fanatical elements in Islam find enough legitimate justifications in the Qur'an and collection of hadiths for their heinous crimes. This is where the problem lies. The Quran - and this is true for the other Abrahamic religious texts - is sufficiently vague to allow adherents extract any kind interpretation that suits their present disposition. You may then ask, why is it that Islam seems to dominate the headlines more than the others? My answer would be that it's the zeitgeist of contemporary sociopolitical trends. One thing is true: Finding oneself at the proverbial tight corner due to the lopsided approach of power politics is the surest way to make desperate enemies. Sameera alluded to this earlier when she mentioned the case of Iraq and how thousands of people in the middle east suffer as a result of the many violations of Western countries driven by selfish interests. Make no mistake, power politics is usually the driving force behind most of these violence. It is just so much easier to use religion as the rallying cry, since people are easily swayed as a result. Christians have inflicted their own share of violence on the world when they felt threatened. There are past examples and there are more recent ones. Again, the underlying motivation had more to do with power politics than religion. Even Buddhists, who are universally acknowledged to be pacifistic, have resorted to violence against Muslims (i.e. In Myanmar) to preserve the Buddhist identity of their nation and surprise surprise, they found justification in their religion too. My final verdict: It's not 'Muslims', 'Christians', 'Jews' or 'buddhists' who need to check themselves or apologise for the crimes of others. It's every individual that needs a reality check/self-appraisal. To draw from a very local example, Sameera has been extremely civil and conciliatory in her comments, whereas some of the commenters have been rather crude and antagonistic, yet, Sameera is supposed to be the Muslim here, right? In the words of Ali G, check yourself before you wreck yourself!! If I haven't bored you out already, I absolutely recommend reading this interview granted by Karen Armstrong HERE it sheds so much more light on my point. |
publisher:APC said they would form a parallel government if they lose? Could you provide a source? |
Op, if you discover anything that is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001 times faster than light, I promise you the Nobel prize in physics |
On the list, south Africa is 15th, Egypt is 27th, Algeria is 55th, Libya is 64th, and Nigeria is 70th. There are four other countries before Nigeria, none of which has to provide electricity to more than half the population of Nigeria, so in what universe is Nigeria 4th in Africa? Anyway, nice celebration of mediocrity! Keep it up!!! |
TippyTop:Don't be ignorant. Buhari believes in Jesus as every Muslim should. He just doesn't believe her should be worshipped. |
PassingShot:Wole actually endorsed Ribadu live on Aljazeera. |
whosefault:If anybody reads Wole's works and remarks, that person will know that such crass and uninspiring trash bears no remote resemblance to his manner of expression. Wole discusses ideas not people's children and where they school. That can never be a big deal to Wole because even he schooled abroad. So I struggle to see why he would stoop so low as to discuss the school choice(s) of the children of someone half his age. Also, what's that crap about finding skyscrapers? How many corrupt politicians own skyscrapers, and how does not owning a skyscraper preclude one from being corrupt? Finally, even you, the OP, cannot possibly conceive of any existing universe where Wole would refer to GEJ as a "phenomenal change", except he was specifically referring to his lascivious flirtations with corruption, and the unbridled sense of camaraderie which he shares with other convicted felons (i.e. Depriye and Bode). That, of course is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria, and deserves the tag "phenomenal". I understand why the endorsement of someone of Wole's class would mean so much to you, but please put your desperation on a leash and refrain from desecrating Wole's intelligence so crudely, it's actually excruciating! Thanks. |
