APC-led FG playing politics by abandoning Federal Roads in our state – Edo govt

The Edo State Government decries the deplorable state of Federal Roads in the State, which has continued to deteriorate because the Federal Government has refused to heed advice and warning signals.

Edo State is a transportation hub. It is concerning that the major Federal Road network in the State, which connects several parts of the country, is in such deplorable condition.

These roads include the Benin-Sapele Road, Benin-Agbor Road, Benin-Auchi Road, Benin-Lagos Road at Ovia River Bridge, among several others.

We don’t think that a region where the oil resources that sustain the country come from should be this neglected.

On several occasions, communities have protested the poor condition of the roads and the state government has intervened by calling on the Federal Government to speed up efforts to fix the roads.

For instance, in October 2022, the governor urged the Federal Government to reconstruct the Benin-Auchi Road because the poor condition of the road had become really dangerous and fueling insecurity in the State.

The State government also placed a ban on 30-ton and above heavy-duty vehicles passing through state roads, as a measure to awaken Federal Government to its responsibilities.

A few months ago, the Department of State Security (DSS) in its briefing had noted that the Benin-Sapele Road was on the verge of collapse. The governor had also raised the deplorable condition of Federal Roads in Edo State at National Executive Council (NEC) meetings to impress on the immediate past Federal Government the urgent need to intervene and fix them.

Three weeks ago, multiple accidents on the Ovia River Bridge on the Benin-Lagos Road led to the loss of several lives, which necessitated renewed calls for the Federal Government to fix the damaged bridge. Our Commissioner for Roads and Bridges has visited the damaged spot several times to inspect and provide temporary palliative.

Recently, a federal lawmaker representing a constituency in Edo Central had a ghastly accident on the Ekpoma-Auchi-Abuja Road and is hospitalised as we speak.

The State Government has made spirited efforts to fix these roads, approaching the Federal Government for permission to carry out palliative repairs on them but the efforts were rebuffed because the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government insisted that the contract to fix the roads had been awarded. This was the attitude of the outgone APC-led federal government.

Despite these efforts and in spite of the appeals made to see reason to fix these roads, the Federal Government has paid deaf ears.

It is now clear that these cries were ignored for political consideration. The APC-led federal government is deliberately delaying the fixing of these roads in an attempt to boost the ratings of its comatose state chapter as we approach the governorship elections scheduled for next year.

It is curious that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their social media hacks have taken to social media to accuse the Edo State Government of abandoning these roads. APC lie the loudest when they lie to themselves.

The resort to petty politics when the lives of innocent Nigerians are lost on these roads is unconscionable and despicable.

The APC-led federal government and state chapter should know that Edo people cannot be hoodwinked. Edo people know and appreciate the tremendous gains Edo has recorded under the Governor Obaseki-led government, and no amount of propaganda will sway them from the path of truth.

We urge the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, desist from whatever political games it is involved in as regards to these roads, and mobilise the contractors handling the roads to site so as to fix the roads and save Nigerians from the hardship and trauma they have been subjected to for several years.

Obaseki, security agencies reassure of steps to check cult killings, use of illicit drugs

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured that the State Government will collaborate with the security agencies to tackle cult-related killings, consumption of illicit drugs and other criminal activities in the State.

The governor gave the assurance during a press briefing after the monthly Security Council meeting, held at the Government House, in Benin City.

He said “We have just concluded our monthly Security Council Meeting where we analyzed the security situation in Edo State. I am happy to inform you that the number of security incidents have continued to drop as we compare and review the incident analysis between April and June this year.

“In the analysis, we found out that we have the lowest incidents in June of about 54 cases compared to about 90 in the previous months and 100 in April. We have seen an improvement.”

Obaseki added: “As a government, we are still concerned about certain items. First the rate of homicide is still very high as it has been linked to cult-related crises and conflicts. There are areas we are looking at, especially the cult issues in the State.

“We are deploying adequate resources to make sure we contain this crisis. We can’t continue to lose the number of young people the way we are losing them because of these senseless cult fights.

“We looked at areas relating to drugs and the consumption of drugs by young people. We have resolved to write and seek the assistance of the Chairman of NDLEA to work with us using their tools and supported by State Government resources to make sure we tackle the incident of massive intake and consumption of drugs by young people in the State.”

On his part, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dankara, said the police has made further arrests of 46 persons in relation to the cult killings and other crimes in the State.

“We are screening those arrested and doing our best to make sure the State is safe for us all,” he added.

Obaseki keen on partnering Abia, Ondo, Delta States, to expand oil palm estate model, boost mechanised farming

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration is ready to export its revolutionary oil palm estate development experience to neighbouring States, including Abia, Ondo and Delta, in an effort to boost food self-sufficiency and diversify Nigeria's economy.

Obaseki said this while inspecting Saro Oil Palm Limited to assess the level of progress on the development of an oil palm estate in Urhonigbe, Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA), Edo State.

The governor also inspected Greenhill Agricultural Product Limited, an ethanol processing plant in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha LGA in the State.

The governor was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Commissioner for Road and Bridges, Hon. Osaze Uzamere; Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Stephen Idehenre; Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Joshua Omokhodion; Special Adviser, Political (Edo South) Hon. Uwa Osunbor and other top government functionaries

Obaseki, who expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, said he hopes to replicate the same feat with yam, cassava and other crops, noting that the effort will enable the State and the country to become self-sufficient in food production and supply.

“We are talking to neighbouring States in the oil palm belt. After next year, Edo will not have any more land for additional oil palm cultivation. So, we are preparing our investors to go to other states and help our partner states to set up similar systems, processes and show them how we succeeded.”

He continued: “I spoke with the Abia State Governor at the NEC meeting and he said his teams will be in Edo in about a month or two to begin to work with us in the area of oil palm cultivation. I am in talks with the Ondo State Government and soon will be talking to Delta State Government.

“With what is going on in the Nigerian economy today, Edo has started diversifying its economy. At this rate in another decade, Nigeria will have no business importing edible fats into this country because we would have more than enough edible fats from oil palm products.”

Narrating the progress with the state’s oil palm programme, he said: “The success in oil palm estate development has led to large-scale estate farming. It is possible and we have started a revolution of mechanized farming in Edo using our own people – Nigerian companies and farmers, not expatriates. We have cultivated huge farmlands using a world-class management system.

“This will be quickly replicated in other crops like yam and cassava. Very soon, we will become self-sufficient in food production. We will soon stop importing food. We have the land, materials and expertise to produce everything we consume and even export our products to other markets. Our experiment is working.”

Over 380,000 children benefiting from EdoBEST Programme across schools in Edo, says Salami

...trains 16,000 teachers on digital skills, distributes 12,000 tablets, 7 million education materials, 1.5 million textbooks, others

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), Mrs. Ozavize Salami, has said that 380,000 students from various public schools across the State are currently benefiting from the State’s Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) Programme.

The Edo SUBEB Chairman disclosed this while briefing journalists in Benin City, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Mr. Crusoe Osagie and the Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare.

She noted that reforms in the State’s basic education sector by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government have continued to improve learning outcomes in schools, preparing children in the State for global competitiveness.

According to her, "Over 380,000 children in our schools have benefited from our EdoBEST programme and the Edo State Government has trained 16,000 teachers in digital skills and classroom management. In Edo, basic education is free and compulsory for children as they are equipped with various digital skills.

"The Edo State Government has distributed 12,000 tablets; 7 million exam materials and 1.5 million textbooks across various EdoBEST schools in Edo State as parents have access to their children's results. The EdoBEST Programme has been able to rebrand all schools, even those schools in the rural and riverine areas.”

Salami further noted, “We are currently intervening in 336 schools and have 181 projects which will be giving 200 classrooms and water projects in 41 schools and will affect 72,000 children. 46 percent of the projects are in urban areas and 58 per cent in rural areas and the majority are close to completion level.

'We have been able to design progressive programmes for schools that are in rural areas as the programme is data-driven. The activities of teachers can be easily monitored as 7,000 teachers are currently being trained online and 84.4 per cent are logged on the online class.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to restoring education in Edo State back to its former glory and tackling learning poverty led to the launch of the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) Programme in April 2018.

EdoBEST leverages the transformative power of cutting-edge technology to deliver outstanding learning outcomes to primary school children across Edo State by better supporting their teachers.

Hinged on five critical pillars that encapsulate the goals of the reform, EdoBEST has equipped teachers with the tools and skills to execute a unique type of learning experience for children.

The programme has also bridged communication gaps between communities and schools, improved schools’ infrastructure, strengthened the curriculum and improved learning outcomes among Edo State pupils.

Edo journalists hail Obaseki’s devt strides, as gov assures sustained reforms to improve livelihoods, grow economy

… ‘We’ve fought a good fight and are ready to fight more for Edo people’

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will sustain reforms and programmes to improve the livelihood and welfare of the people, ensuring the right infrastructure and other incentives to place the State on the path of sustainable economic growth and development.

Obaseki, who spoke during a hangout with journalists in Edo State at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Benin City, said his government will continue to advance infrastructural development, industrial growth, job creation opportunities and economic prosperity for the State.

He said, “In the last six years, we have been in a battle ground fighting, not because we like it but because it's one of the ways to get real transformation and change. We know change is the most difficult thing to accept.

“We can sit back today and show you the benefits of the fight we have engaged in. What we have done and achieved in terms of governance is clear for all in the State to see. We have had a good fight and are ready to fight more for Edo people, carry them along and make life better for them all. Thanks for joining us in the fight for our future and not eating our future today.

“We are working to reduce suffering, give hope to our people, and take advantage of our God-given opportunity to position the State and its people for the future.”

He continued: “You are all part of my Constituency and I give the body special consideration. My absence from this Secretariat is deliberate so that I am not seen as patronising you because I know you are independent-minded people, well-trained professionals who are always ready to do the right thing and positively criticize my administration to put us on our toes to work for Edo people.

“We are in a stage where we are talking of sustaining all the reforms we have undertaken as a government. We are looking at Edo in the next 30 years. We are not concerned about the next election because our people know what to do but are more focused on the next generation.

“We are more focused on the next generation of Edo people, strengthening education and making our children learn and have the skill to live in a digital stage. We are creating the environment to woo people here to invest in the State. We are connecting the youths with technology, helping them take charge of the future.”

While congratulating the Edo NUJ Chairman, Festus Alenkhe for the achievement since he took over the leadership of the body in Edo, Obaseki said: "I congratulate you for your achievement as Chairman of Edo NUJ. You have followed the path of our government in developing the State. You are undertaking the kind of transformation we are taking in government.”

Hailing the governor’s development strides across all sectors of the State, Alenkhe said the journalists in the State are beneficiaries of the government’s reforms in the power sector as the union is connected to the 24-hour Ossiomo Power supply, improving the efficiency of the journalists in the State.

He noted, “Thank you for your achievement in education, health, sports and civil service. We commend you for your commitment to worker’s welfare, ensuring an increase in the minimum wage to N40,000, regular payment of pension and salaries, as well as adequate and prompt promotions.”

Benin Mall 75% complete, to be opened before year end, as Obaseki inspects project

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the Benin City Mall, noting that the project on completion will further strengthen the State’s position as one of the best retail hubs in the country.

The governor said this when he inspected the ongoing development of the Benin City Mall, situated along Sapele Road in Benin City. Obaseki was accompanied by the Commissioner for Finance, Budget, Economic Planning and Development, Mrs. Adaze Aguele-Kalu, and other top government officials.

He said, “I am glad and impressed that Edo is taking its position as a retail hub and Edo people will not leave their State for other States to experience retail hub to buy things from large malls. We are building a mall that is larger and better than any other one you can think of.

“We are building a mall that has a lot of entertainment space. What makes the Benin Mall unique is the presence of a library where parents can bring their children to have the library experience. This will be part of the revamp of Edo State Library which is going to be largely an e-library.

“We are expected to have more than six million titles which can be accessed electronically. This is one of the branches to be opened here as we work to resuscitate other libraries across the State. Perhaps the mall is the only mall in the Continent where you have a library.”

Obaseki added: “Here, we would have the educational, retail, and entertainment experience with four world-class cinemas and are looking forward to the second Edo International Film Festival where we have not less than seven cinema halls in the State to review all the films entered in for the competition.

“We are repositioning Edo State and Benin City to take its place in the Country as a destination for young people to come and have business experience and all other experiences they want in the World.”

On her part, Adaze Aguele-Kalu said, “The Benin Mall will be ready for launch before the end of this year. For Christmas, be ready to have a nice lit-up mall. It will cater to different fields and sectors within the retail industry. This is one of the governor’s passionate projects and very soon, we will be commissioning this.”

Edo goes tough on cultism as police arrests 124 suspected cultists

…to arrest, prosecute sponsors of cult-related activities

The Edo State Government has said it is stepping up efforts to end all forms of unlawful societies, cultism, and cult-related activities as the State Police Command arrests 124 suspected cultists across the State.

The Edo Police Commissioner, Muhammad Dankwara, while addressing journalists in Benin City, on Thursday, said of the 124 suspects arrested, 97 have been charged to Court, 13 have been cleared and released while 14 others are still under investigation for murder and cult activities in the State.

The Police Commissioner said the Command is working with the government to check the spate of cult killings and other criminal activities in the State.

He said, “On Thursday, 13th July 2023, the Command’s anti-cultism, anti-kidnapping, and cybercrime unit, in collaboration with the Edo State Security Network, while acting on credible information, arrested a total number of 53 male suspects in different locations across the City.

“I want to use this medium to warn all secret cult members of different cult groups to stop the killings. Also, I want to warn all state and non-state actors and sponsors of various secret cult confraternity who give out their monies, hotels, apartments, lounges, houses, drinking joints, or any other dwelling place as support for clandestine meetings to withdraw their patronage or be ready to face arrest and prosecution in Court, and such properties sealed-up through the instrument of the law.”

Dankwara assured the people of the State that operations to get rid of cultism and other heinous crimes in the State are ongoing and will be sustained, urging for the collaboration and support of residents.

According to him, “124 suspects have so far been arrested, 97 suspects charged to Court, 13 suspects screened and released, while 14 others are under investigation. Three locally made single barrel guns and two cartridges were recovered.”

Obaseki meets HOLGA, revenue directors, prioritize land use charge, property tax implementation

The Edo State Government has said that it will administer the Property Tax jointly with the 18 Local Government Areas in the State.

Addressing journalists at the end of a meeting presided over by Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Chairman, Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), John Inegbedion said the meeting became necessary to discuss the modalities for the implementation of the State's Property Tax.

Other officials who attended the meeting include the Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGA) and Directors of Revenue from the 18 LGAs.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, focused on challenges relating to the land use charge and property tax implementation.

Inegbedion noted, “Our discussion centered on the property tax in the State. With the new land use charge act that has been passed into law, we are here to have a conversation on the way forward.

“The local and State Government will be administering the property tax jointly and the details on how it will be admitted was what we discussed in the meeting with Mr. Governor.

“Mr. Governor charged the HOLGAs and revenue Directors in the local government that this is the new frontier for which local governments can sustain their revenue collection. From statistics and numbers provided by the EdoGIS, we can see how this number can change the fortune of the local government.”

Managing Director, Edo Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS), Osaro Grace Aihie, said the land use charge is not new to Edo State, noting, “We have done that before and are working on that again as the Local Government is collaborating with EdoGIS to enable us maximize the revenue coming to Edo State.

“Land is wealth and new crude oil which should be utilized maximally to get the best. We are working with the local government to stop double taxation. The land use charge is made up of property tax, tenement rate, and ground rent. We have signed a MOU and we would work together to increase the revenue of the State as the land use charge is a game changer.

“I call on the members of the public to cooperate with the government to ensure the policy of the government is implemented to benefit the people of the State.”

The Head of Local Government Administration, Esan South East LGA, Dr. Gregory Elimihele, commended the Governor Obaseki-led administration for looking for a way to improve revenue in the State and Local Governments in order to address the economic challenges faced by the people.

Edo Govt Warns Against Acts of Violence, Terror

In the last few days, the Edo State Government has observed the activities of some hoodlums who have resorted to causing mayhem, unleashing terror on the citizenry and undermining efforts to maintain peace and order in the State.

The State Government has taken actions to quell the violence and irresponsible acts even as suspects have been apprehended and taken into custody.

We stress without equivocation that no matter the campaign of terror, resort to violence and evil ploy to blackmail and tarnish the image of government, the State will stop at nothing and spare no expense in fishing out any perpetrator of these criminal activities.

The State Government therefore advises parents and guardians to restrain their children and wards from engaging in actions that imperil the lives of others, which is intended to create a sense of insecurity in the State. No one will be spared, and we will ensure that the long arm of the Law catches up with anyone found culpable in these dastardly acts.

The public should be rest assured that the government will continue to live up to its duty of protecting the lives and property of the citizenry. We urge everyone to go about their lawful businesses in peace.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, at the BusinessDay CEO Forum, showcased investment opportunities in Edo as well as the impacts of the public-private partnerships that have translated to the remarkable transformation of various sectors of the State’s economy including education, agriculture, healthcare, public service, security and infrastructure, among others.

Speaking at the event in Lagos with the theme, “Charting a Course to Growth and Development,” Obaseki said reforms and projects by the government over the past six years have transformed the State into Nigeria’s emerging industrial, commercial, and investment hub.

According to him, “Edo State is an exemplar for Nigeria. It’s the emerging industrial, commercial and investment hub of Nigeria.”

The governor noted, “We have laid our policies on investment growth and industrialization on a few key pillars. First, we are ensuring that we focus on the engine of government, the bureaucracy, because if the government doesn’t work, the economy will not work.

“We have also focused on developing talents because it's all about people. The economy cannot run on its own as people have to drive the economy. We have focused on policies that support businesses and are providing the needed infrastructure with our emphasis being digital infrastructure. We are also creating an environment of law, order, and security.”

He continued: “In the last six years, we have essentially tried to rebuild our bureaucracy and re-engineer our civil service. What is unique is that we have tried to use technology for governance. I have made a promise that I will be the last governor in Edo that will work with paper files. So, we are moving the whole platform digitally.

“We have focused on training our people with a priority on how we recruit. We have tried to depoliticize recruitment, making sure that the core of the civil service is now recruited based on merit. Currently, any graduate who has a first-class degree anywhere in the world has automatic employment in the Edo civil service.

“We have also focused on business-friendly policies, taking advantage of the Federal Government’s social investment tax credit and a few of our partners have come to invest in building roads and others. We have created a tourism master plan and today, we're working on a 30-year development plan for Benin City and a regional plan for the State.”

On reforms in the education sector, the governor said, “For us, it is about people, focusing on talents. We realised that foundational learning was very weak and we saw this when we had to deal with the issue of human trafficking. We have invested hugely in the past six years to strengthen foundational learning because without that you cannot build anything else in terms of developing talents.

“We are supporting vocational education because there is a large population of youths who have fallen through the cracks but they are very talented. So, we are partnering with various companies in the area of technology. We have a programme with Decagon to train youths on software development and engineering.”

“We are also very big on technology. We are working with companies like MaineOne and others on fibre optic connectivity and today I believe Edo is the most connected state digitally in Nigeria.

“By October this year, we would have completed 1600kms of fibre optic connections to all local government areas, and by the first quarter of next year, we expect to construct another 300km in all our secondary schools and primary healthcare centres in Edo.”

Speaking on successes recorded by the government in industrialization leveraging public-private partnerships, Obaseki said, “For us, there are so many advantages we have to share, and the key is knowing how to lean on those advantages. What we have done is try to attract private sector partners into key areas we think we have a comparative advantage.

“First in industry, we have the Benin Enterprise Park. It sits on almost 1000 hectares of land and its next door to the Ossiomo Power Plant, so we have gas and electricity to serve the park. The first phase, which is about 50 hectares, is already being developed in partnership with the Nigerian Local Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). We are working with other partners to see how to expand.

“We have also attracted investment in the modular refinery since we have gas assets. So, we currently have two modular refineries in Edo. The two refineries are the 6000bpd facility operated by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company (ERPC) in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area and the 2500bpd Duport Refinery run by Duport Refinery Company Limited in Egbokor, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.”

He added, “After 70 years of talking of rebuilding the port in Edo, we finally have been able to get a preferred bidder, Mota Engil Africa, to work with us on the development of the Benin Port Project which will be one of the closest ports to the belly of Nigeria. Designs have been done and we expect that we will begin construction before the first quarter of next year.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has directed that all revenue collection functions of the Government will now come under the direct supervision of the Governor’s Office.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, the governor said a review of the state’s revenue-to-date showed that the state government’s earnings fell under the N30bn target.

According to Osagie, “At the end of the month of June, 2023, the Governor’s Office reviewed the year-to-date revenue status of the government, showing that earnings fell under the N30bn target.

“On account of that, the governor has queried all Permanent Secretaries and Heads of revenue generating agencies within government, including the Local Government Areas (LGAs), who have not met their mid-year target.

“He has ordered that they are now to come under the direct supervision of the Governor’s Office to ensure the attainment of the N62b target at the end of the year.”

Edo disburses grants to 362 beneficiaries of NG-CARES

The Edo State Government through the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) has disbursed a second round of grants to 362 beneficiaries whose businesses were negatively impacted by COVID-19 in five local government areas across the three senatorial districts of the State.

In a statement, the Head, Delivery Platform for DLI 1.3 (Livelihood Support) under the programme, Ms Flora Bossey, said the beneficiaries were selected in accordance with the guidelines of the programme, noting that the beneficiaries were verified and enrolled in the beneficiary database.

According to her, “the beneficiaries for the grant support were selected from Egor, Ovia North East, Esan North East, Owan West and Etsako West LGAs bringing the total beneficiaries supported by Edo State Government to 524 since the commencement of the programme.”

She added that the beneficiaries are small business operators with existing businesses, comprising youths, and vulnerable groups such as widows drawn from eligible trade areas.

“As part of the guidelines for the project implementation, the beneficiaries received training on livelihood support and soft skills, while the grants which ranged from N140,000 to N200,000 was paid directly into their bank accounts,” Bossey noted.

A beneficiary from Owan West Local Government Area, Mrs. Comfort Aigbokhai, expressed appreciation to the Edo State Government for putting smiles on the face of the people.

Another beneficiary in Egor, Mr Lucky Odeh, thanked the Edo State Governor for his compassion and support to the poor and vulnerable in the State.

Eligible businesses included fashion designing, petty trading, artisans, hairdressing, shoe making, and tie and dye, among others.

Obaseki to make Edo first fully e-governed State in Nigeria, sets September deadline

…trains over 3000 workers on inclusive digital transformation

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ongoing digital transformation programmes in the State will make Edo fully e-governed before September 1st, 2023, emerging as the first State in the country to have entirely shifted to a digital mode of administration.

The governor said this while declaring open a one-week digital transformation training programme for over 3000 workers in the State, at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki represented by the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., said the State is the most digitized in the Country, noting that the government is working assiduously to ensure the delivery of all government services is digitised, transparent and seamless.

The governor said, “Over the next few weeks, we would be having 3,000 personnel in the civil/public service trained on the use of computers. We all know that without the knowledge of computers, it is impossible to work on the edogov platform.

“The governor has instructed that before September 1st, 2023, Edo State would become completely an e-governance State as no State in the Federation has been able to achieve half of what we have achieved. All these are to ensure that we succeed as we move to become the digital hub of Nigeria. We hope that all of us in this training today will contribute to that success.”

He continued: “The target is to 3,000 workers. The training will last for nine weeks. The objective is to ensure that all civil/public servants are trained on all that is required to make Edo State a digital State.

“We want to be the digital hub of this Country and as such the governor is investing massively in digitalization. The government is opening the digital space which is why we have a contract to extend fiber optic cables across the State to enable people to have access to the internet and expose their skills.

“Recently, the governor launched the digital policy to put the State in the forefront of digital technology and enable the State to have a sense of direction to help achieve a defined and definite result.”

The governor further noted, “In the executive side of government, we have 10,050 staff but across the service, we have almost 38,000 people. The training is for the directors’ cadre. Every person with a deficiency in computer appreciation will get the training.

“The final output of this training is to see workers more proficient in the use and appreciation of the computer to enable them work effectively with the edogov platform.”

One of the participants and civil servants, Mrs. Emilia Ayeni, commended the Obaseki-led administration for embracing digital technology and ensuring that all civil /public servants are computer literate to enable them to contribute their quota to the State’s digital economy.

Obaseki has set a new benchmark for public procurement in Nigeria, says Idogun

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Edo State Public Procurement Agency (EDPPA), Henry Imogiemhe Idogun, has attributed the remarkable achievements in public procurement in the State to the visionary leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, noting that the governor has set a new benchmark for accountability and transparency in public procurement in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Idogun said Edo State has, in the past six years, witnessed a paradigm shift in the way public procurement is conducted, elevating the state’s procurement system and processes to unprecedented levels of efficiency, fairness and compliance.

According to him, Edo has become a model for other sub-nationals and countries since implementing landmark reforms by Governor Obaseki to instill transparency and probity in its procurement processes as not less than 19 Nigerian States and two countries have visited the State to understudy the transformational changes.

The Managing Director noted: “The Governor’s support is the reason why we are able to achieve so much in public procurement in Edo State. Sometimes, they take a file to him and he asks if it has gone through procurement. He asks questions when he is not sure when he is not seeing evidence in the file. Sometimes he approves, and writes, ‘subject to the procurement process.”

Idogun stated, “I have always and I will continue to thank His Excellency, the Governor for his leadership. I will always remain loyal to the governor because of what he represents; his vision for Edo State. So, we will continue to do our best in support of his MEGA Agenda. Nobody was in Edo State between 8 and 10 years ago and will say Edo is not making progress. That person is not being sincere with himself.

“Under this Governor, Edo has made tremendous progress. Is it in human capital development, which is imperative for proficiency? Is it the infrastructure? The way he is, he is not somebody that wants to be loud otherwise we would have filled everywhere singing our praises. Some of us are unrepentantly loyal to his vision for a better Edo State and we have no apology for that.

He added, “Edo people, I don’t think they could have asked for anything better than what they have in Governor Obaseki and I just want to pray that we have somebody who will share 200% of his vision to take over from him so that some of the good foundation he has laid can be built upon and then we can unlock growth and development in Edo.”

World Population Day: Obaseki urges increased action to address challenges, harness potential of global rising population

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for increased efforts among global stakeholders to fully harness the potential and address the challenges of the world’s growing population, ensuring inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Obaseki, who made the call in commemoration of the 2023 World Population Day, reiterated the need for a healthy and productive global population, reassuring that his government will sustain policies and programmes to reduce inequality and engender inclusive growth.

According to the governor, “The 2023 World Population Day presents yet another opportunity to review and strengthen efforts to address the challenges and embrace the opportunities that come with the ever-increasing global population.

“The exponential growth of the world's population poses significant challenges to sustainable development, placing strains on resources, infrastructure, and social systems. We must recognize the need for careful planning and innovative strategies to ensure that our society can provide for the needs and aspirations of every individual, both now and in the future.”

He added, “At the same time, we cannot overlook the immense opportunities that arise from a growing population. With a larger workforce and a diverse pool of talents and ideas, we have the potential to drive innovation, stimulate economic growth, and foster social progress. While harnessing these potentials, we must acknowledge the collective responsibility that rests upon the government, citizens, and other stakeholders.

“Together, we must establish comprehensive systems, build resilient infrastructure, and implement dynamic socio-economic policies that not only address the immediate needs of our people but also lay a strong foundation for a secure and inclusive society.”

Speaking on the theme on this year’s celebration, “Unleashing the power of gender equality: Uplifting the voices of women and girls to unlock our world’s infinite possibilities,” the governor reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and addressing barriers that hinder the girl-child from reaching her fullest potential.

He noted, “In our state, we are committed to creating an environment where women and girls can thrive. We have prioritized investments in education, healthcare, and skills development, ensuring that every girl-child has the opportunity to receive a quality education and reach her full potential. We are also working to address the persistent issue of gender-based violence by strengthening our laws, raising awareness, and providing support services to survivors.”

Obaseki’s 66th birthday: Roseluyi special needs school says children in dire need of learning aids, classroom facilities, medical support, others

The management of Roseluyi Exceptional Students Academy (RESA) has called for the support of public-spirited Nigerians, particularly Edo people to cater for the over 35 children with special needs in the school, commending the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his support to the school and vulnerable persons in the State.

The governor had recently made a special appeal to all who want to celebrate his upcoming birthday anniversary, to channel all gifts and donations to the Academy for children with special needs in the State.

Obaseki said the school has demonstrated excellent capacity in the development of children with special needs, urging all to participate in the celebration to honour the children with special needs in the State.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City ahead of the Governor’s birthday celebration, the Founder of Roseluyi Exceptional Students Academy (RESA), Osarhiemen Rosemary Isaac-Aluyi called for assistance to sustain efforts aimed at supporting the children with special needs.

She said, “These children are precious and are like the regular children outside. They can learn like regular children. We have a fish pond and poultry here and the children help with the feeding of fishes and birds but need supervision. We have 700 birds and 2900 fingerlings as the birds produce about 10 to 11 crates daily.

“Our vocational center here in this school is impacting in no small ways the life of our students as we teach them tailoring, shoe making, make-up, barbing, and more.

“This is a calling; it's my passion and what I love and enjoy doing as we have about 35 students in this school, both boarding and day students.”

According to her, “Our students are from Edo and Delta States and we hope to get students across the Country as we expand in our service of taking care of these children with special needs. We have a huge impact on the lives of these children as some that came in and couldn’t talk or hear can now talk and hear. Some others who can't read are now trying to read.

“To get the best out of the children, you don't shout at them, you don't beat or flog them and one must be very patient to be able to cope with them. These children are surrounded by special teachers who are trained to attend to them.”

Calling for assistance, the special needs teacher noted, "We can't do it alone but need help from good Nigerians as we have 10 classrooms but not all are furnished. We need chairs, television sets, and computers in all the classes, as we need to use these learning aids to help them learn fast.

“We spend money buying the medication they need because they take a lot of medication which is very expensive. We take them on routine medical checkups at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital as we collaborate with them to help us subsidize the checkup. We need a lot of equipment, especially in the vocational center like machines for various vocations.”

Thanking the governor for his support to the School, 27-year-old Amen Adeghe noted, “We thank the governor for his continuous support for the less privileged in the society as he has a passion for the vulnerable in the society. We celebrate him on his birthday and pray that God Almighty will continue to protect him.

She appealed to parents with children with special needs not to lock them up or separate them from society but rather bring them to the school, adding, “We will do our best to help them here.”

Edo arrests fake PUWOV official over extortion, impersonation

Officials of the Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) have apprehended one Isesele Eugene, a suspected impersonator of the scheme, who is in the business of extorting, assaulting, and impounding vehicles of unsuspecting members of the public at the Ramat Park axis of the Benin metropolis.

The PUWOV State Commander, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the suspect was arrested following an intelligence report and has been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

According to him, “Officials of the Edo State Public Works Volunteers have apprehended a suspected impersonator of the PUWOV scheme who has been operating at the Ramat Park axis in the Benin metropolis. The suspect known as Isesele Eugene was arrested around DVD Oil at Ramat Park, while on illegal operations.

“The suspect has been in the business of extorting, assaulting, and impounding vehicles of unsuspecting members of the public while posing as an official of PUWOV.”

The PUWOV boss further noted, “He was arrested following intelligence reports gathered on his illegal operations. He illegally arrests and impounds vehicles of unsuspecting members of the public at DVD Oil Ramat Park.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Oregbeni Police Division for further investigation as the case is presently being charged to court to ensure that the culprit is prosecuted accordingly.”

While seeking the support of residents, Yusuf-Osagie charged, “We are committed to sanitizing the volunteer scheme and rid it of bad eggs. We urge members of the public to be mindful and watchful of impersonators operating and extorting motorists while posing as PUWOV officials.

“We urge anyone with complaints to report to the appropriate authorities. Call the following help lines 09150322999 and 08132030846 to report such unlawful acts.”

LASU best student: Obaseki to place Aminat Yusuf on salary, sponsor Law School programme

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed that the Edo State Government will place Aminat Yusuf who graduated as the best law student from Lagos State University (LASU) with 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on salary and sponsor her Law School programme.

The governor, who was represented by the Head of Service (HOS) Anthony Okungbowa Esq., said other benefits have been approved for the outstanding student.

According to him, “This is an update on our daughter, Aminat Yusuf after the Government of Edo State honoured her in respect of her academic performance in LASU for graduating with a perfect CGPA of 5.00.

“Following this achievement, the government offered her automatic employment and the governor has now approved other things for her beyond the employment.

“The governor has directed that Aminat Yusuf will be sponsored on scholarship for one year in the Nigerian Law School and that the government will be responsible for the provision of all her needs till she completes the programme."

He added: “The governor also approved that for every month that she will be in law school, she will receive an up-keep allowance equivalent to the salary of a State Counsel, which is almost N200,000 naira.

“This is in recognition of the feat she achieved in LASU. We are proud of her achievement and hope she would join us after her law school programme as we will write to NYSC to ensure that she embarks on her one-year compulsory youth service in the State.”

Eid-El-Kabir: Obaseki celebrates with Muslims in Edo

…assures sustained measures to cushion effect of current economic realities

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, joined the Muslim faithful in the State to celebrate the 2023 Eid-El-Kabir, assuring sustained policies and measures to cushion the effect of the current economic realities caused by the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

Obaseki, while speaking to the Muslim faithful at the Government House in Benin City, commended the Muslims for the collaboration and support to his government over the past six years.

The governor, represented by the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., urged for continuous prayer for the State and country to ensure lasting peace, unity, and progress.

Obaseki said, “I thank the Muslim Community for the support and prayers for my administration and the people of Edo State as it has contributed to the many successes recorded by my administration so far.

“When the enemy of Nigeria wishes the nation down, it's only by your prayers and the prayers of people like you that the nation is still on its feet. It is a part of the reason why the Country will not go down.

“Your prayers for the State and the people of Edo State have been responsible for our successes and the growth and development of the State. I thank you very much and ask you to continue in your prayers for the State.”

He further stated, “Today is a day of celebration and thanking God for the life of the people of the State and its development. We understand the hardship and challenges faced by Nigerians and Edo people following the removal of fuel subsidy. The Edo State Government has put in place a lot of palliatives to ensure that Edo people don't suffer too much.

“The governor has made several comments about the state of the nation and its policies and he got backlash for it but time has proved him right that he is a man that speaks truth to power.”

Obaseki added, “The government of Edo State is committed to ensuring that the government responds appropriately and puts policies and programmes in place to alleviate the suffering and challenges of Nigerians, especially Edo people. These are troubling times but Nigeria will never go down and Edo State will never go down as well.”

On his part, the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Fatai Enabulele thanked Governor Obaseki for his support to the Muslim community in Edo State, ensuring a peaceful environment for co-existence.

Hailing the governor for his developmental strides across all sectors of the State, Enabulele added, “I thank you for your various transformational reforms across all sectors of the State. Sports has also benefited from the policies. Bendel Insurance has achieved great feat by winning the Federation Cup (FA) which was last won 43 years ago. You are doing a lot but little publicity. I urge you to do more in terms of publicity of your work so that the citizens will know what you are doing for them.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has made a special appeal to all who want to celebrate his upcoming birthday anniversary to channel all gifts and donations to the Roseluyi Exceptional Students Academy, for children with special needs in Edo State.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, said, “As His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki has maintained that his priority as a leader is to aid the vulnerable in society, he is using this opportunity to encourage all well-wishers to actively participate in supporting this cause.

“With a heart for every child’s development, Governor Obaseki wishes to contribute to the success of the Roseluyi Exceptional Students Academy which has demonstrated excellent capacity in the development of children with special needs.”

He added, “The governor thanks all Nigerians, particularly the good people of Edo State, for their kind wishes and urges all to participate in this unique celebration to honour the children with special needs in the State.”

The governor's birthday is on July 1st.

Obaseki congratulates Edo-born Stephen Aguele for emerging 2nd best JAMB candidate with 358

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has congratulated Stephen Aguele for emerging the second-best candidate in the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination with a score of 358.

In a statement, the governor hailed Aguele’s brilliance and exceptional performance, noting that his feat demonstrates the indomitable Edo spirit.

Aguele completed his secondary education at the University Preparatory Secondary School, in Benin City, Edo State.

According to him, “I congratulate Stephen Aguele on his impressive performance in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination with a score of 358. The feat is remarkable and praiseworthy as it advertises the superior education obtainable in our dear state.

“Aguele has shown what is possible when one commits to their studies and works hard to attain excellence. I applaud his drive and commitment to his studies, which has paid off.

“The feat is reflective of the reforms that we have undertaken in Edo State in the last six years, which are aimed to entrench a robust foundation for excellence in education through the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) 2.0.”

He noted that the state government’s reforms are paying off, as students in the state can now compete favourably with their peers within Nigeria and across the world.

“We are proud of Aguele’s sterling record as he has become an ambassador of the reforms in the state’s education sector. I urge youths in Edo State to emulate his feat, even as I wish him more resounding success in his future endeavours,” the governor added.

Obaseki hails MSMEs for role in state’s devt, assures better policies, support to drive growth

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the contributions of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the socioeconomic growth and development of the State, reassuring that his government will continue to sustain policies to support the growth and sustainability of businesses amid the current economic realities.

The governor said this in commemoration of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day marked by the United Nations and its sister agencies with the theme, “Galvanizing MSMEs worldwide by supporting women and youth entrepreneurship and resilient supply chains.”

He said, “Today, we acknowledge the role of MSMEs in the growth and development of our State. Micro, small and medium businesses are the backbone of our economy, driving innovation, creating employment opportunities, and fostering economic diversification.

“It is the relentless spirit and resilience of our entrepreneurs that have transformed ideas into thriving businesses, uplifting communities, and propelling our state toward economic progress and prosperity.

“This year's celebration presents us with another opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by our small business owners and entrepreneurs, and the unprecedented disruptions caused by the current economic realities. Despite the obstacles, they have displayed unwavering determination, resilience, and creativity in navigating through turbulent times.”

Obaseki further noted, “As a government, we understand that access to finance, infrastructure, technology, and market linkages are crucial for the growth of our MSMEs and are committed to supporting and empowering them, ensuring the implementation of policies and reforms to guarantee an enabling environment for small businesses to thrive.

“We have through the State’s skills development agency, Edojobs, provided training and business advisory services to equip entrepreneurs with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed. We are providing the needed infrastructure including steady electricity and good roads to enhance the ease of doing business for MSMEs, connecting all our local government areas with internet connectivity to ensure that businesses tap into the opportunities of a 21-st century technology-driven economy and attracting local and foreign investments to bolster the MSME ecosystem through the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO).”

Speaking on the theme of the celebration, Obaseki said, “This year’s theme highlights the crucial role played by women and youth entrepreneurs in our MSME sector and emphasizes the importance of building resilient supply chains. We recognize the immense potential of our youths and tremendous potential of women entrepreneurs in driving economic growth, and will continue to support them to realize their fullest potential.”

Obaseki pays June salaries, pension ahead of Eid-El-Kabir

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has paid June salaries of workers and pensioners in Edo State ahead of the Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, said: “The Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has paid June salary of workers and pensions, in line with the government’s policy of meeting its salary obligations before or on the 26th of every month.

“The governor, as always, prioritises the welfare of workers and has continued to demonstrate this by ensuring that salaries and pension are paid as and when due.

“Workers in Edo State received their salaries today, June 26th. Pensioners have also been paid. This will enable Muslim faithful across the state to have uninterrupted Eid-El-Kabir celebration.

“The economy is in dire straits and it is only proper that workers are paid in time to enable them to do necessary shopping ahead of the Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.”

He noted that the Governor Obaseki-led administration has maintained an unbroken streak of regular payment of salaries even after increasing the state’s minimum wage to N40,000, the highest in the country.

Obaseki offers Edo-born LASU record-setting first class graduate, Yusuf Aminat, automatic employment

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has offered record-setting First Class Law graduate, at the Lagos State University (LASU), Miss. Yusuf Aminat, who hails from Edo State, automatic employment into the State’s public service.

Yusuf emerged as the best ever graduate at LASU with a 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the institution’s Law Degree Programme.

Speaking to journalists in Government House, the governor said, “Beyond merely congratulating her, we have offered automatic employment to her. Indeed, we have reached out to her parents and spoken with them. They have accepted our offer of employment.

The governor, whose offer was conveyed by the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., stated: “She has not done her law school program and her youth service. We are proposing to write to the National Youth Service Corps so that she will serve with us here in Edo State after her law school program so that we don’t run the risk of losing her.”

On efforts to engender a competitive workforce in the state, the governor said: “We are committed to improving the quality of human resource in the public service. We have set this as a priority and will get the best to work in the state. We have done everything within our power as a government to ensure that we create an enabling environment for work and as a result, we also want the best hands.

“We are creating the best work environment here so that the public service in Edo State can become attractive enough for the best talent from within and outside the state. We thank our dear young men and women who have excelled in their studies and we expect that more of them will achieve this feat.

He noted that aside the offer of employment, Miss Yusuf will receive other forms of support as reward for her sterling feat, stressing that she has indeed given a good account of herself and is a worthy ambassador of the state.

Edo group hails Obaseki for reinventing sports in Edo, salutes Bendel Insurance for Federation Cup victory

The Edo Renaissance Forum has commended the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for reinventing sports in the State, congratulating the governor and state-owned football club, Bendel Insurance Football Club on the historic Federation Cup final victory.

Bendel Insurance defeated Rangers International Football Club with 1-0 scoreline via a penalty kick converted by Imade Osarenkhoe, in the finals of the Federation Cup played in Asaba, Delta State.

In a statement signed by its convener, Victor Omorogbe, the group said Governor Obaseki’s interventionist reforms in Edo State have continued to yield positive results across all sectors, including the club’s recent triumph, winning the 2023 edition of the NFF Tingo Federation Cup.

The statement reads: “We, members of the Edo Renaissance Forum, congratulate Your Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Executive Governor of Edo State, and Bendel Insurance Football Club on their historic Federation Cup final victory.

“The Benin Arsenal last achieved this feat 43 years ago. Evidently, Your Excellency’s interventionist reforms in Edo State are yielding positive results, helping the state regain its pride nationally and internationally.”

They further noted, “Even though you have been working silently, your reinvention and transformation can be seen across critical sectors of the state. You have transformed the public service, health, education, agriculture, energy, and power sectors, and now sports.

“We sincerely thank Your Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Sports Commission, the players and management of Bendel Insurance, and all those who have contributed to this great achievement.”

Obaseki congratulates Yusuf Aminat on breaking LASU record with perfect 5.0 CGPA

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has congratulated Yusuf Aminat Imoitesemeh, for emerging as the Best Graduating and best-ever student at the Lagos State University (LASU), with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 obtained in the institution’s Law Degree programme.

In a statement, Obaseki hailed Yusuf on her remarkable and pacesetting feat, noting that she has once again displayed the indefatigable Edo spirit of excellence and hard work.

According to him, “I congratulate Yusuf Aminat Imoitesemeh on her record-setting feat as the best graduating and best ever student at the Lagos State University. With a perfect 5.0 CGPA, she has indeed shattered the glass ceiling and cast her name in stone at the institution.

“We are proud of her and celebrate her outstanding academic feat, which serves as an example for millions of Edo children needing role models as they journey through life.

“Yusuf has proven, once again, that with dedication, hard work and diligence no record is too difficult to break. She embodies the indefatigable Edo spirit and represents the best of us.
