“I was on top of the world yesterday when we won the game. The mood was like when your child is selected for an international award. I returned home happy and was excited for the success of the team,” she noted.

According to her, the success of Bendel Insurance since the past four years is a testament to the commitment and pragmatism of Governor Godwin Obaseki, adding that Bendel Insurance FC is a national asset that must be preserved, thanking the Edo State Governor for his visionary leadership and conscious investment in the club.

Edo @32: Times are bleak, but we must not lose hope, Obaseki charges

…glory of new Edo Nation stands on threshold of transformation - gov

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the nation is experiencing harrowing times with the future looking bleak amid the current socio-economic challenges but urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country despite the prevailing circumstances.

Obaseki said this during an interdenominational thanksgiving service to mark the Midwest Referendum and 32nd anniversary of Edo State, held at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, the Edo State.

The governor noted that the glory of the new Edo Nation stands on the threshold of transformation in the area of infrastructure, development, innovation, and inclusiveness to build a State where humanity thrives.

He said, “I appreciate all those who have created time to come and worship with us at the 60th Mid-West Referendum and 32nd anniversary of Edo State.

“We are here today to praise and thank God for what He has done for us as a people. Yes, things are difficult, times are hard, and the future looks bleak but we must thank God as it can only get better with our belief and hope in him. This morning, I am expected to make some declarations upon the State and the glory of the new Edo nation.”

Quoting the Book of Psalms 24 vs 1-2, the governor said, “Dear citizens of Edo State, blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. The people He chose for his inheritance, the Earth is of the Lord and everything in it, the World and all who lives in it, for He founded it on the sea and established it on the waters. (Psalms 24 vs 1-2).

“Father you are as close as the very air we breathe. May we and our beloved State continue to grow and revolve around you and the light, life, and increase fill Edo State.”

Obaseki continued: “Today marks a pivotal movement in our journey, a sermon to unite us in our collective efforts; the dawn of this new era has unveiled a horizon of limitless possibilities. It is both a responsibility and privilege to grasp this opportunity with unyielding determination.

“As we stand on the threshold of transformation, let us remember the dreams that ignited our hearts and inspiration that propel our endeavor; we are the architect of this emerging glory in our beloved State.

“Entrusted with the responsibility to shape its destiny, the glory of the new Edo rests not in its infrastructure alone but in the belief of its people, steadfast in their commitment to progress and unity. Let us carry the thought of innovation because it’s through innovation that we shall illuminate the path to success and prosperity.”

He further added, “Let us break the barrier that hinders spiritual revival, progress and inclusivity, creating a flourishing society with the fear of God, diversity and shared purpose. The foundation of this new horizon is built upon righteousness, justice, and collaboration with neighbors joining hands.

“Our successes will continue to be celebrated collectively; our challenges will be met with collective determination. The glory of this new era is not a distant idea; it's woven into our beliefs and actions. Today we charge ourselves with the responsibility to be the driving force behind the glory of a new Edo. Our dedication is unwavering, our efforts tireless and commitment resolute.”

Representative of Delta State Governor and Delta Commissioner for Works, Aniagwu Charles said, while celebrating with Governor Obaseki and Edo people on the auspicious occasion, said, “I bring greetings from the people of Delta State, wishing the Governor and the people of Edo State to finish strong.”

In his sermon titled, “Edo the Beautiful” and reading from Ecclesiastes 3:11, the former Chairman of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Felix Omobude said, “We all should build on the value of Edo State which are integrity, honesty, and respect for one another. Edo people must give honour to Him who made everything beautiful for the State.”

Commending the governor for his transformative projects across the State, Omobude noted, “I want to thank the governor for the good things you are doing for Edo people. It truly represents us as things are beautiful in the land. Some States are still struggling to pay N30,000 minimum wage but Edo has gone beyond that paying N40,000, the highest in Nigeria. The governor is making life beautiful in Edo State.”

The referendum for the creation of the then Midwestern region of Nigeria, later renamed Bendel State in 1976, now Edo and Delta states, was held on Saturday, July 13, 1963, following the March 29, 1963 proclamation of the Federal Government of Nigeria, empowering the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, to conduct the referendum.

The colloquium being organised by the state government is among other activities lined up to celebrate the Diamond anniversary of the Referendum, bringing together leaders from the two States among other stakeholders to chart a path forward.

In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Andrew Okungbowa, said the Colloquium with the theme, ‘60 years after the referendum, which way Midwest?’ will be held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, Airport Road, Benin City by 10 am, on Monday, August 28, 2023.

According to him, the event will have a panel session with Prof. Michael Vickers, Prof. G. G. Darah, Prof. Uyilawa Usuanlele, Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, and Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed as panelists, with Chief Nduka Obaigbena as moderator.

Okungbowa said, “The Colloquium will begin with the National Anthem (in Edo Language) by Princess (Mrs.) Ivie Betty Uwa-Igbinoba, Zonal Director, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Edo Zonal Office (comprising Ẹdo, Delta and Kogi states).

Edo LG poll: PDP alerts on NDDC, APC’s plan to buy votes with N150m

…funds should be deployed to fix failed federal roads

The Chairman of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, has raised the alarm over plot by a director with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and leading member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo to rig and buy votes during the September 2 Local Government elections with N150 million polled from the NDDC.

The Edo PDP Chairman, in a statement, said intelligence available to the party revealed that a Director with the Niger Delta Development Commission will be sharing N150 million at his residence in Benin City to leaders and members of the APC to finance the rigging plan ahead of next Saturday, September 2 Local Government elections in the state.

According to him, “We are once again drawing the attention of the world and all lovers of democracy to the glaring fact that the APC is attempting to rig the Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, by mobilising N150 million from the Niger Delta Development Commission to execute their evil plan to buy votes and rig the elections.

“It is regrettable and disturbing that at a time when Edo people are suffering as a result of the criminally neglected federal roads and the biting economic hardship supervised by the APC led Federal Government, the party is deploying NDDC’s resources to subvert the will of Edo People.”

“It is shameful that the APC-led federal government is using funds meant for the development of the oil-rich Niger Delta to buy votes. We are sure that the resort to this shameful tactic is because the APC is certain of defeat.

“The N150 million should be deployed by the NDDC to fix the failed federal roads in Edo State. And if they are desirous of winning the elections they should campaign and sell their programmes and candidates to Edo people.”

CultureTraditional Rulers In Edo South Back Obaseki’s Implementation Of 1979 Law by Aisosa25(op): 7:26pm On Aug 24, 2023
Traditional rulers in Edo South back Obaseki’s implementation of 1979 Law

… new regime ‘ll enhance good governance, end rural-urban migration, says gov

….’ll improve security, sense of belonging at grassroots - Enigie

Traditional rulers from Edo South Senatorial District have unanimously declared their backing for the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, commending the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for the implementation of the new regime where all traditional rulers in the 18 local government areas of the State will receive monthly allowances to administer their domains.

The traditional rulers made their position known on Thursday when they paid a ‘Thank You’ visit to the governor at the Government House, Benin City.

They expressed their appreciation to the governor for what they described as a bold step taken by him to address the age-long lingering problem.

This is as they disclosed their unflinching backing of the governor’s action, noting that this development will not only enhance good governance at the grassroots level but also give a sense of belonging and authority to the traditional rulers to effectively administer their various domains and put in check their people.

The Enogie (Duke) of Dukedom Evbuobanosa, Professor Gregory Iduorobo Akenzua, who led the delegation while commending the governor for the new regime, applauded him for his government’s developmental strides across the State.

According to him, “For a number of years, we have observed a portion of the local government law of Edo State that affects Enigie and wondered for a while why it was not being implemented.

“But by your recent declaration, you have given a monumental opportunity for Enigie in Edo South to participate actively in the governance of the State and we are grateful.

“We thank you for your courage, wisdom, and determination to write anything that is not right since you assumed the reign of government in Edo State. We thank you very much as we are very appreciative of the monumental strides in development at all levels that we have experienced in your time.”

He added, “This is why we are here to show our appreciation and pledge our loyalty to you and thank you and your team of determined public officers. We thank you on behalf of the people of Edo South Senatorial District who have not felt the impact of traditional governance effectively for some time.”

In his response, the governor, who thanked the Enigie for the visit, said he will continue to work with the traditional institution in the State to ensure widespread development and growth across the State.

Obaseki said, "We took the decision in response to your letter you wrote to me last year. We looked at the issues critically and felt the reasons in the letter were valid particularly in terms of the situation in Nigeria today.

“You asked me to implement a section of the Edo State Traditional Rulers Law which by law, I have no choice but to do and that law stipulates that every local government should have its own traditional council.

“The reason why that decision was taken and enacted many years ago is that the traditional authorities in every jurisdiction should assist the government in enforcing law and order and ensuring development within the area. The law applies to the whole of the State, including the North, Central and South Senatorial Districts.”

He continued: “A very close look at the implementation of the law, you can see the advantages that North and Central have had as a result of full implementation of the law, which has allowed full participation by the traditional authorities in the administration of each local government.

“By implementing the law in Edo South Senatorial District, we now expect a much faster rate of development than we have seen in the past. We know some of you in the past have assisted local government authorities in areas like security, education, and welfare which you did on your own.

“You have assisted in the past to support vigilante groups, improving security in your area. I thank the Enogie of Ehor who worked tirelessly with us to deal with kidnapping at Ehor and Igieduma axis a few years ago. Working with him made us understand the issues more and we were able to checkmate their activities in that area.”

Obaseki charged, “In your meetings which must be regular, you must work closely with local government authorities and ensure every land is policed, especially the forest areas as we don't want our forest to be used as camps for criminals and bandits.”

The governor further thanked the traditional rulers for collaborating with his administration to fight human trafficking and illegal migration in Edo State, adding, “We must also take the issues of education very seriously as we have noticed that we don’t have as many schools as we should have in your jurisdiction. People are not willing to live and teach in those areas as a lot of migration to Benin City.

“In our 30-year development plan, one of the things we will put in our development plan is how to make our areas more comfortable to enable us to reduce the rural-urban migration. I thank you for your support and collaboration in our fight against human trafficking and irregular migration.

“We need to reverse migration as Benin City can’t take everybody. You need to make your area attractive by providing infrastructure and services for people to live comfortably.”

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of Edo people, Obaseki said the government is sustaining efforts to tackle poverty and improve the livelihood of the people.

He stated, “A register for the poor and vulnerable was compiled in 2019 with 314,000 households and 1.2 million people in your domain. Verify the register as we work with you to put in place a system to disburse money on a monthly basis for these people to enable them to take the pressure off you because they come to you for help.”

Recall that about two weeks ago, the Edo State Government Executive Council approved the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, which translates to a new regime where all traditional rulers in the 18 local government areas of the state will receive monthly allowances to administer their domains.

In a statement to that effect, Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq. noted, "The Council resolved that there would be a traditional council in each local government area across the state’s 18 local councils.

“In the law, the Oba of Benin remains the permanent chairman of the Edo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs and also the permanent chairman of the Benin Traditional Council.

“The Benin Traditional Council is the umbrella body of Edo South Traditional Council.

“The budget and funding of the Benin Traditional Council will be completely independent of the financing which goes to all other traditional councils of the various local government areas in the State."

EducationOur Efforts At Resetting Education In Edo Have Yielded Fruits, Says Obaseki by Aisosa25(op): 4:40pm On Aug 24, 2023
Our efforts at resetting education in Edo have yielded fruits, says Obaseki

... promises upgrade of facilities

...gov has revamped teaching profession - Oviawe

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said his administration’s efforts in resetting education in the State have yielded positive fruits with visible evidence to show.

Obaseki said this while delivering his welcome address as the College Visitor at the maiden matriculation ceremony of the Edo College of Education, in Igueben Local Government Area of the State.

The governor said, “We decided to reset education because of the critical and important role that it plays in our lives as individuals and as a nation. That reset button means we have to look at education afresh from the beginning, from the very basic level which is the foundation to the tertiary institution level.

“There was a lot of rancour in the beginning. We shut down many of the schools because we felt they were not doing what they were set out to do in the first place. We changed the laws setting most of them up as we didn’t see the need to have several schools doing the same thing in an uncoordinated manner.

“We decided to look holistically at education in Edo State and thank God for the courage to take those bold moves. Today, what have we achieved? First, we have looked at the entire spectrum, the ecosystem, and certain key pillars which we believe that the pillars will rest.

“Without a foundation, nothing can be built as such we focused on the foundation of education, which is basic education. We quickly realised that for basic education to work and for children to learn, you have to focus on the teachers. Focusing on the teachers meant motivating and giving them tools to work, particularly technology. The key to that is ensuring that you have an institution where you properly train these teachers. That is why the College of Education is key to our education reforms.”

Speaking on the effort made by his government to revamp College of Education in the state, he disclosed that the government decided to create the multi campuses system to allow for accelerated growth and effective management system as well as create room for more students to be given the opportunity to realise their dream of becoming professional and well trained teachers, noting that the teaching profession in Edo has been totally transformed.

Obaseki added, “ We pressed a reset button, shut down the College, and restarted as one College of Education with the headquarters in Igueben.”

To the matriculating students, Obaseki said, “You are the first intake into this College and you are the first matriculating students today. This is why I have taken time out of my busy schedule to wish you well and let you know you are the pioneers of something new, the future that will transform Edo State.

“This matriculation is not only a transformative occasion of your life but also a transformative occasion for education in Edo State. I am glad that I am here to see what is going on.”

Reassuring sustained investment in the Institution, the governor further noted, “A lot of investment still needs to be made on this campus and I am assuring you that I will make those investments. We started with Abudu and the refurbishment is complete and this will be the next Campus. The infrastructure in this campus will be upgraded, particularly accommodation for staff and students.

“My presence here today means that I take the school and what we are doing here very seriously. Rest assured you have my support as I continue to be governor. To also make sure that the person who succeeds me continues to focus and strengthen education in Edo State.”

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, said the Obaseki-led administration has completely revamped the teaching profession in the State, making it more attractive for qualified people.

“I thank Governor Obaseki for the reforms and rebirth of education in Edo State which started in 2017. He came here several times to understand and figure out how to educate and produce professional teachers in Edo State.

“Through his works, vision and commitment, the governor has restored the pride of the teaching profession which is now for polished, educated, reformed and refined men and women. You are all here because teaching is your first option.”

She added, “The College is to reposition the profession of teaching, find and recruit the best in the system. The vision of the governor is that by the time you are graduating you will have a job in one of our schools and also by the time you are graduating, you are technically vibrant.”

Earlier in her welcome address, the Acting Provost of the Edo State College of Education, Igueben Campus, Prof. (Mrs.) Roseline Osagie, said, “The College in partnership with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has started the process of offering a one-year Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) especially for the Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) teaching fellows.”

Also, the Enogie of Igueben and Okaigun of Esanland, HRH Ehizogie Eluojierior I, commended the governor for his transformation of the education sector in Edo State, adding, “Obaseki has visited here more than three times as we have governors who have never visited Igueben once. Obaseki is a lover of education and the education sector has benefited from it. We thank him for the school, the competent staff and appeal to him to upgrade the facilities here as he activates his machinery to make this a reality.”

34 years after, Obaseki settles benefits of former Edo governor, Alli

…celebrates his widow at 80 in Birmingham

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has settled the benefits and gratuity of the former governor of the State, Late Professor Ambrose Alli. This is coming 34 years after the demise of Alli.

Alli was the first Executive Governor of the former Bendel State (Now Edo and Delta states) between 1979 and 1983 under the then Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). Born September 22, 1929, the renowned Medical Professor died on September 22, 1989.

Obaseki made this disclosure yesterday in Benin City on the occasion of the celebration of the award of the ‘Most Pension Friendly Governor in Nigeria,’ bestowed on him by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).

Speaking on his commitment to the wellbeing of pensioners in the State by ensuring that their benefits are paid regularly, including outstanding pensions and gratuity, dating over 40 years, he revealed how the unpaid benefits of the former governor were settled last week by the state government.

According to Obaseki, “Last Saturday (August 19, 2023), the widow of former Governor of Edo State, late Prof. Ambrose Ali, turned 80 years in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has made a lot of sacrifices for us as a State.

“We decided to celebrate with her and I asked one of the children what he thinks is an appropriate present for her mother. He said just do her the honour of paying my father's benefits while in office. Then I said, you mean Prof. Ali benefits are not paid.’ He said yes. We went into the records, prepared the cheque and took it to her in England. This is to tell you where we are coming from. I’m glad we remembered him.”

The governor was represented by his wife, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, at the 80th birthday celebration of the late governor’s widow, Chief Mrs. Rosemary Alli-Walker.

The Edo State First Lady recognised the enduring impact of Alli’s tenure as governor, noting that the policies and programmes implemented during his leadership, notably in education, urban and rural development and healthcare have continued to shape Edo State’s progress.

She said the former governor and his wife occupy a special place in the hearts of Edo people, resonating with the attendees, who had gathered to honour Chief Mrs. Alli-Walker.

Mrs. Obaseki also lauded her enduring commitment to values such as hard work, diligence, and forthrightness, adding that these values, which she upheld during her tenure as First Lady, continue to inspire the state’s ongoing reforms across various sectors of the economy.

In her response to the felicitation, the celebrant expressed her gratitude to the First Lady for travelling all the way from Nigeria to join in her celebration.

This is as she pledged to support free surgeries for children with cleft lips, an initiative named ‘Operation Smile’.

Recall that Governor Godwin Obaseki had, in 2018, sought and obtained, a posthumous Presidential Pardon for late Governor Ambrose Alli; a request that was ratified by the Council of State in 2020.

Football enthusiasts, fans and other residents of Edo State have described as electrifying the weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup clash between Bendel Insurance and ASO Chlef FC of Algeria, with many commending the Benin Arsenals for the exhilarating performance and the state government’s commitment to sports development.

According to them, the 90 minutes of action-packed football was a rollercoaster of thrills, emotions, and electrifying moments that left fans who had burst of excitement watching the continental action for the first time in about 18 years on the edge of their seats.

The excitement had reached a crescendo in the 41st minute of the first half when Bendel Insurance’s centre forward, Imade Osarenkhoe finished off a sweeping move after a rebound, scoring the decisive goal of the match, amid cheers and roars that filled the 12,000 capacity stadium to the brim.

The beautiful yellow colours of Bendel Insurance illuminated every corner of the stadium and across the city centre. Adding another layer of excitement to the weekend was the government’s thoughtful provision of free bus ride, which transformed the journey to the stadium into a communal celebration.

The buses, branded with the vibrant colours of Bendel Insurance, paraded through the streets, ferrying fans and football lovers from various corners of the city, adding a vivid hue of colouration to the city’s scape that was in expectant and celebration mood as they waited the start of the game.

The streets were alive with the shared anticipation and camaraderie spirit of those onboard the buses, creating an exciting and fun filled spectacle before and after the match.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Edokpolor Osadolor, said reforms by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government in sports and the sustained support for the team had returned the team to the continental state after 18 years.

According to him, “The excitement and atmosphere in the stadium was palpable as Bendel Insurance showcased their prowess on the field. It’s heartwarming to see the team's return to continental competitions after such a long hiatus.

“A special thanks to the Governor Obaseki-led state government for investing in sports development, which has undoubtedly contributed to the team’s success. It was indeed a moment to cherish and I am glad I didn’t miss the football match.”

Another resident, Jude Amieghemwen, said, “Bendel Insurance’s performance was a true spectacle and the atmosphere in the stadium was electric. We are glad they are returning to the continental stage after 18 years.

“I commend the team for their resilience, hard work, and dedication, as well as the government for its unwavering support to the team. It’s heartening to see how sports can bring people together and create moments of pride like this.”

Appreciating the fans for coming out to support the team, Chairman, Edo Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, said: “We extend my heartfelt appreciation to our incredible supporters who turned out in overwhelming numbers to cheer Bendel Insurance to victory.

The sight of the crowd, larger and more passionate than ever before, was truly remarkable and inspiring, and we are confident that the team will not disappoint you in the next leg of the encounter taking place in Algeria. We thank you for making this a historic and unforgettable moment for all of us.”

AAU dismisses 5 staff, 21 others undergoing investigation over criminal offenses

…Special Intervention Team calls for review of institution’s enabling laws

…begins contributory pension, health insurance, others

…we’re committed to holistic revamp of Edo’s education system, says Obaseki

The Management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has dismissed five staff members of the state-owned tertiary institution, with 21 others currently undergoing investigation for various criminal offenses.

A member of the Special Intervention Team (SIT), Mr. Austin Osakue, while submitting the progress report of the SIT to Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House, in Benin City, said the staff were dismissed by the Disciplinary Committee of the Institution.

Osakue, who urged the State Government to constitute a Governing Council and begin the process of hiring principal officers for the Institution, said the work done so far by the SIT will not be appreciated unless the Institution reviews its enabling laws.

He noted that the Institution has keyed into the directive of the Edo State Government as it has commenced the contributory pension scheme which started on August 1, 2023, adding, “All staff in the school that have seven years to leave are exempted from the scheme.”

He further noted, “Edo Health Insurance Scheme is fully operational and running as all the premiums are paid directly to EdoHIS account to ensure accountability, transparency and sustainability. Nine hundred and ninety-eight (998) students have subscribed with over N15 million and 1,800 staff with over N31 million.

“The Institution discovered over 30 cases of AAU students living abroad for not less than two years, writing exams and graduating. The staff members and Heads of Departments involved have been handed over to DSS and ICPC for action.

“Over 95 per cent of AAU land mass is ungoverned and the master plan tempered with, we appeal to you to collaborate with the Institution to restore the master plan.”

On his part, the Governor said his government is committed to restoring the lost glory of the Institution, preparing the tertiary institution for EdoBEST students who will be ready to gain admission into the school in about five to six years time.

Obaseki further said, “We need to clear this school due to the educational reforms we have embarked on as our EdoBEST students will be ready in about five to six years’ time for the University and can't go into a University whose standard is below where they are coming from.

“Few people have held the Institution to ransom; we are ready to fight and break it. If you are a lecturer and you have examined students and have the results and failed to present it, you should not expect a salary because you have not completed your work and if it is based on that you want to go on strike again, we are ready for you.

“It’s a fight that is necessary to transform this Institution for the students coming. All these reforms and sustainability must be anchored on the new reformed law and we will be presenting the University's new bill to Edo House of Assembly at the end of the month for speedy passage.’'

The governor noted that the search for members of the Governing Council will commence immediately, adding, “We will not want to bring in people into the Governing Council without the law in place.”

He stated, “The Assembly members are here to be part of this event to enable you to have background to this issue because they will still come to meet you. Political interference has brought the school to the position it is today. We are saying it's time to change because we can’t run a University this way because of the students coming behind. We must make it a first-class university that we all will be proud of. It's only when you have good institutions that you are sure of development.”

Speaking after the match, Obaseki said: “I feel happy as we have a very good, youthful, strong and imaginative team. I am really thrilled and pleased with their performance this evening. The weather was not clement, but the boys performed well.

“They had good ball control. Having studied the Algerian team, our coach will make sure they put up a good strategy and come home with the victory. I am very optimistic that we will get a win over there in Algeria.

Oba of Benin remains uncontestable head of all traditional rulers and chiefs in Edo State

The Edo State Government has restated that the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, remains the uncontestable head of all the traditional rulers and chiefs in Edo State.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare maintained that the Oba of Benin’s position as the permanent head of all the traditional rulers in Edo State remains sacrosanct in the State Government’s implementation of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, especially as relates to section 45 of the edict.

The statement reads: “The Edo State Government restates that the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, remains the uncontestable head of all the traditional rulers and chiefs in Edo State.

“The government notes that the subvention to the monarch has increased since Governor Godwin Obaseki came into office and has not been reduced whatsoever, as is being falsely peddled by mischief makers.

“Rather, the funding increased since the commencement of the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki because the Value Added Tax (VAT) and the excess crude components have been included.

“The Oba of Benin’s position as the permanent head of all the traditional rulers in Edo State remains sacrosanct in the State Government’s implementation of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, especially as relates to section 45 of the edict.”

Nehikhare continued: “Recently, in the wake of some disagreement among some traditional rulers in the State, the traditional rulers agreed with the State Government to temporarily warehouse the fund in a central pool until the administrative issues were addressed. This was between April 2023 and July 2023.

“It is important to state here that against the false information that the fund was withheld from July 2022 to July 2023, all statutory payment was paid until April 2023, when it was agreed for the funds to be warehoused till date for the resolution of outstanding issues.

“These administrative issues have now been resolved by the Edo State Government and the palace delegation led by the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe, and this pool of funds is now being disbursed to the various traditional rulers across the State as well as the Benin Traditional Council.

“The total amount now being disbursed to all the traditional rulers in the State is N1,316,746,764.13. Of this amount, N639,269,245.26, goes to the traditional rulers in Edo South Senatorial District.

“While the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) gets N319,634,622.63, the balance of N255,707,698.0 is distributed to the traditional councils in the seven local governments in the senatorial district, while N63,926,924.52 left is reserved for any emergency in the councils.”

He further stated, “In the same vein, Edo North traditional rulers get N377,642,592.6 while Edo Central traditional rulers receive N299,834,926.27

“It is therefore shocking to hear mischief makers trying to stir a phantom crisis between the Edo State Government and the palace of the revered monarch, with many of them making completely false statements and spreading misinformation on social media.”

The Commissioner charged, “We call on Edo people to be wary of misinformation and know that everything is being done according to the law and the accounts of the traditional rulers are being credited.”

He added, “In all of these, we want to by this medium restate that His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the Oba of Benin, remains permanent chairman of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs as well as the permanent chairman of Benin Traditional Council (BTC).

“Funding to the revered palace has been shored up and is not in any way depleted as these purveyors of falsehood have gone out to portray in the public domain.

“With this full implementation of the law, the government expects members of local government traditional councils to interface with their subjects and promote security, intelligence gathering and community development within their domains.”

“The government will continue to work towards harmonious living in the State, ensuring that all stakeholders are carried along in its development strides,” Nehikhare reassured.

Obaseki: EdoBEST is working, delivering on its goals

…to implement digitisation of legislative arm of govt

…extends fibre optic to LGAs, secondary schools, PHCs

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki said his administration has recorded great success with the implementation of the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme, which is working and delivering on its goals of transforming basic education in the State.

The governor, who spoke to journalists at the Government House, in Benin City said his administration is finalising plans to send some bills to the Edo Assembly to amend existing laws, particularly on secondary education and facilitate proper disarticulation of schools in the State.

Obaseki said, “In the area of basic education, secondary and technical education, a lot of work is being done. We are finalising some bills that will be sent to the House of Assembly to help us amend the existing laws, particularly on secondary education. As you know, we have been working hard on the disarticulation of secondary from junior schools.

“You recall that 24 years ago, there was a federal policy to shift our educational policy from a 6-5-4 to a 6-3-3-4 system. Even though it has been done as a policy, nobody, not even the federal government has been able to separate what should be basic education from secondary education and also list out what the expectations are at that level of education.”

He further noted, “In Edo, we want to pride ourselves as a progressive State in terms of education. We will be coming back to the Assembly with the laws we have put in place to redefine our educational system and it is important because EdoBEST is a success story. It is working as the children we trained will finish primary six now, and go to JSS and with the confused policy, these children will be in crisis. That is why we must come back to the Assembly.

“In the area of education, we are doing well. In the area of digitalisation, one of the conversations we will be having with the House is on digitising the legislature as we are concluding the digitalisation of the executive arm of government. As of today, we have digitised and archived over seven million government records and from September 1, 2023, we are cutting off from paper to paperless government and we want the same to happen in the legislative arm.”

The governor added, “We are almost concluding the laying of fibre optic cables across your various constituencies and by the end of October, all local government headquarters will be connected with fibre optics. We have identified 52 secondary schools to be connected and all Primary Health Care Centres. These are some of the things we should be doing to render services to our people.

“We would not be distracted but remain focused on delivering good governance to our people. With this kind of support, we will be able to finish strong.”

The Edo State Government, on Friday, led football lovers and other residents to major roads and streets within the Benin metropolis to rally support for Bendel Insurance ahead of Saturday’s CAF Confederation encounter with ASO Chlef FC of Algeria, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Edo City Transport Limited, Mrs. Hauwa Dupe Ohikhuai, who led the road show, said the campaign was to mobilise Edo people in their numbers to come out tomorrow to cheer the State’s football team to victory.

According to her, “We are embarking on this road walk to create awareness and enable people to come out en masse to the stadium tomorrow to cheer our Bendel Insurance team to victory. It is a very important match for us because for more than three decades, we have not had this kind of match. Now that we are going to be having it here, we want to use it properly to our own advantage.

“The governor has ordered that we provide all our buses to offer free rides to people so that we can all be at the stadium to cheer our Bendel Insurance team to victory. We need to be there for them, to cheer and encourage them to victory. Today, we are having a road show to create awareness.

Ohikhuai further noted, “Tomorrow by 12pm, all the locations that we have been announcing including Ugbowo, Siluko, Airport Road, Mission Road, New Benin, Sakponba Road, Aduwawa/ Eyan, Sapele Road and Ekewan Road, buses will be made available to pick everybody.”

She added, “As you enter the bus, free tickets will be given to you to go into the Stadium and watch the match peacefully. There will be free jerseys and other gifts items for the first 100 people. We are also to pick them back to the destinations where we picked them from. We are encouraging Edo people to come out to cheer the Bendel Insurance to victory. We want the stadium to be filled so that we can give them moral support.”

The road show kicked off from Agbor Road through Akpakpava, Kings Square, through Ekenwan Road to Stadium Road, among others.

…watches team train, boosts morale

Ahead of Saturday’s CAF Confederation tie between Bendel Insurance and ASO Chlef FC of Algeria, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, visited the Benin Arsenals to watch them train ahead of the showdown scheduled to take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, by 4 pm.

The governor, who was accompanied by top government functionaries, boosted the morale of the team, pledging N5m cash reward for the team as motivation to ensure their victory in Saturday’s clash against the Algerians.

Obaseki said, “You have all done so well to get to where you are now. So, today I decided to be with you and watch you train and encourage you and tell you that this is just the beginning. We have made arrangements to fly you to all the destinations where you have matches. We must go and win this tournament but for Saturday, just be in good spirits. You know what to do; rest properly and ensure you win for us.

“We, as a government, will do our bit for you. We love you and love how you are making us proud; so, continue to make us proud. We know how capable you are as a team and I will be here on Saturday to cheer you up.”

Expressing confidence that the team will come out victorious, the governor said that he is optimistic that with the support the team will get from the home crowd, Bendel Insurance Football Club will defeat their opponent.

He stated, “I am optimistic that with the support the home crowd will give them, they should win that match on Saturday. We want Edo people to come and enjoy what we have provided here in the State. They should come and have a good time here at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.”

He added, “It’s not all the time we sit in our houses to watch the Premier League, we should develop our own league. This is the beginning of getting our own people more interested in local sports and putting our money here.”

The Technical Director of Bendel Insurance Football Club, Monday Odigie, commended the governor for his continuous support and encouragement to the team, adding, “We are doing the best we can for Saturday's match and we are close to our best and look forward to a positive game.”

Nigeria in trouble economically, says Obaseki

...urges Edo people on self-help

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on citizens of the State to help themselves in developing the State, as the Federal Government has thrown the nation into economic crisis.

Obaseki made the call when he met with stakeholders during a workshop to discuss the implementation of the State’s new Land Use Charge Law, with the theme: "Joint Implementation of Land Use Charge by State and local governments," at the new Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City.

He said his administration is working round the clock to ensure the state’s economic development, noting: “As a State, we can’t fold our hands and make excuses. We have to do something for our people. We will do all to ensure our people are very comfortable.

“We can do so much in Edo State. The country is in crisis economically. We can't continue to fold our hands and wait for a country that can't help us. Rather, we will do all we can to help ourselves and our State.”

He continued: “From our revenue, we have decided to take money from our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to look after those that can't feed – the poorest of the poor. We are doing our best as an administration to make things easy in Edo State for our citizens who have trust in this government.”

On the need for self-reliance, he said: “If we are a truly thriving country, states will survive on their own, without relying on Abuja. Whether they give us or not, we would survive as a State. We have been surviving before now. Our administration is transparent and accountable, that is why the World Bank trusts us.”

Noting that the State is working on a 30-year Regional Master Plan, he said the plan focuses on how to bring development to Edo State, linking the rural areas to the urban centres.
BusinessObaseki Charges Edo People On Payment Of Property Tax by Aisosa25(op): 7:25pm On Aug 16, 2023
Obaseki charges Edo people on payment of property tax

... says it will ensure continuous devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has met with stakeholders including professional and women groups, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), traditional rulers and the business community in the State and sought their cooperation and collaboration on the implementation of the State’s new property tax to ensure the government continues to meet its obligation to the citizenry.

This was during a stakeholders’ workshop on the state’s new Land Use Charge Law, themed: “Joint Implementation of LUC by State and Local Governments,” held at the New Festival Hall, in Government House, Benin City.

He said the land use charge is property tax meant for property owners, which must be paid, noting: “The tax is not for poor people. Those that don’t have a property have no business with such a tax.”

The governor continued: “We want your cooperation as we have not done all the roads needed. We can only do more when we have more money. There is no double taxation in Edo. This is not double taxation on property in the State. It is not much; you can pay once.”

He further noted: “You will agree that since we came in 2016, the rate of development has increased. We have built up to 1,500km of roads in Edo State. The ones that are bad are not State roads, but Federal Government roads. If they are our roads and I have the authority, I will do them. When I want to build some roads, they say they have already given it out on contract.”

The governor stated that the citizenry can support the government in executing its mandate by paying their taxes, noting that more tax revenue would boost the government’s capacity to deliver durable infrastructure.

Obaseki said his administration will not fold its hands and lament without working for the people, adding, “This property tax is the most important way to get revenue to continue development in the State. You can’t pay tax without earning something. Tax is like tithes in the scripture and it's a contribution to the government. Without tax there cannot be government and development.”

On the administration of the tax, he said: “If you have a property, you pay just one tax for your property. The local government and the state government have a mechanism on how to share the tax. This tax is not collected in cash but it’s paid straight into the government's account. We must account for how we spend this revenue.”

He further stated: “I have met with traditional rulers. I told them that from our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), we will take money to feed those who don't have – the poorest of the poor in the State. We can do so much in Edo if we have the revenue.”

On accountability and transparency, he said that the government will do the right thing, noting: “I want to appeal to you all to trust the government. If you don’t pay for something, you have no right to ask how the money collected is being used. What we try to do in the last few years is to address the issue of accountability. We own this state and must contribute to the development of the State.

“The World Bank trusts the State and has continued to support us through various ways. So why will our people not trust us? The World Bank is giving us money directly and they can only give money to those they trust. This property tax law is only for people who have land and property and are making money from them.”

The Managing Director of Edo Geographic Information Service, (EdoGIS), Osaro Grace Aihie, said the Land Use Charge is a consolidation of all the land-based rates and charges payable in Edo State.

She noted that the charge is on real properties like land, building, structure, noting that the new law allows the local government areas in the State to handle tenement rates while State is in charge of property tax and ground rent.

Obaseki: Edo can’t accept ‘Emilokon’ as strategy for winning elections

...making my deputy visible isn’t a crime

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ‘Emilokan’ syndrome or spirit is not a strategy for winning elections and ruling Edo people.

The governor said this when leaders of Edo South Senatorial District visited him in Government House on a solidarity visit.

He said what is happening between him and his deputy is really unfortunate, sad and avoidable because “the people know where we are coming from and what we have gone through.”

The governor noted that Edo people will not accept ‘Emilokon’ as a strategy in government as “they are not known for that. For us, it is the people that will decide.”

The governor continued: “What has happened in the last few months is strange and even if you have ambition, this is not the time to express it. The time table for the election is not out. You can’t be part of a government and also be the one to destabilise the same government.

“I thought we came together and will leave together and let the people say you have done a great job and they will now make the decision themselves. They are the ones to say that come rain or sunshine, we must continue.

“You are telling the world one thing and yet doing another. You are loyal to your principal and yet you are in Court with your principal. Everybody has the right to be ambitious but do it the right way.”

He added: “When we came in, I said let’s build institutions, not individuals. The Constitution provides for a Deputy Governor and what I can’t do, I call on my Deputy Governor to do it for me. That is not a crime. The Constitution doesn’t provide for co-governor but Deputy Governor.

“Elevating a Deputy Governor and making him visible is not a crime. But this I did because I want to build institutions rather than individuals or persons. To mistake that and misuse it is really unfortunate as you have created the impression that the Deputy Governor should not be given responsibility.”

On the charge that he gave the deputy governor too much responsibility, Obaseki said: “People are already blaming me now for giving him responsibility and visibility and it’s my fault. How can it be my fault when you want to groom young people? I believe when young people work with you, give them opportunities and expose them, preparing them for leadership positions in life, praying they don’t abuse the privilege.

“I have no regret for exposing my deputy to power and leadership position. I have not made any mistakes but he is the one that made the mistake. I hope he retraces his steps. He is the one that took me to Court; he should be the one to talk to, not me. We are determined and focused to finish well and with your support, we are sure to finish well.

“We are not starting any new projects but finishing the ones already started and making sure all we started we finish and design a plan for those coming in, as no government can finish the work.”

Noting that Edo people cannot afford to make mistakes, he said: “We can’t make any mistake again as our people have suffered in the past. We will not allow them to suffer again. That is why we are doing our best in the State to change the narrative.”

PoliticsObaseki Has Transformed Edo More Than He Is Credited For, Says Ex-commissioner by Aisosa25(op): 3:41pm On Aug 14, 2023
Obaseki has transformed Edo more than he is credited for, says Ex-Commissioner, Agbonwanegbe

…he is modest, quiet on his achievements

A former Edo Commissioner for Agriculture, Sir Chris Agbonwanegbe, has declared Governor Godwin Obaseki as the best performing governor in the history of the state, noting that he has discharged himself creditably in almost all areas of developments but lamented that most of his achievements are not acknowledged in the public space.

Agbonwanegbe, who served under the former Governor of the State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, made this disclosure in a remark during the celebration of his 70th birthday anniversary in Benin City.

Wondering why the governor has refused to blow his trumpet as others do, he said: "The governor must be commended for his achievements and commitment to transforming the state. "Do you know that a child trained in Edo State School of Nursing, Benin City, gets a job in America without going through secondary examination? That is courtesy of the governor but not many people are aware of this fact.

“Each time I lie on the bed and I reflect on him, I wonder why people are not talking of him and all the things that he has done. I came to discover that he himself is the cause because he doesn’t believe in publicising what he has done. This is because he believes that he is doing what he was elected to do.

“He has done more roads in terms of kilometers than previous governors. Incidentally, he is not publicising his achievements. I know there was a governor in this state, who was trekking along Sapele Road, even when he knew he was powering electricity behind ACB Building in Sakponba Road and people were hailing him, children were going after him.

“I was with a renowned chief in Benin City a couple of days ago, he said to me that he has 24-hours power supply; 18 hours from Ossiomo Power plant and six hours from PHCN.”

Taken aback by this development, which most people don’t know about, Agbonwanegbe said he then asked the chief, ‘‘Sir, why don't you let the public know some of these things?” His reply, he said, was, ‘‘since the man (Obaseki) who did the job doesn't want people to know, is it me that will be shouting about it? That was the kind of reaction that came from him.”

Continuing, the celebrant said, “Your Excellency, I was at Iguoriakhi a couple of days ago, we recalled that I superintended the Ministry of Agriculture while Iguoriakhi was under the Ministry of Agriculture. When I got there, I saw a different Iguoriakhi, better than a university, people should please go and see for yourselves, I’ m not just saying it.

“When we finish here, anybody that has good analytical mind, go and see the Palm House, the Secretariat Building today, don't just look at the building from outside, but take a step in, for those of you that have travelled out of this country, you will see that the offices of the workers are furnished as you see in overseas, with each of them having computer and air conditioner.

“It's the best of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. Where the governor is taking us to, it will appear as if we are not determined to get there yet. We should also know that people say follow who knows the road. This man knows the road, so, we should follow him and get this state better than we saw it.”

Beside the transformation of the State, Agbonwanegbe also noted that the governor cares for the welfare of the people, disclosing that, “I want to come to a personal note. There are people who don't know that I took ill in 2019. He was in APC then and I was in PDP but words got to him that I was ill.

Obaseki pledges to work closely with youths for devt of Edo

...to build NCYN house, provide power, internet services

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has pledged to continue to work closely with the youths in the State for its development, growth and progress.

Obaseki gave the assurance when he and his wife, Betsy, were conferred as grand patron and matron of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State Chapter, at the Youth House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki said, "I am glad that am here to participate with you as this is the first time I will be participating with you to celebrate the International Youths Day. I can assure you that it will be a year with a difference.

"I recognize the impact, energy, talents and creativity of our youths in Edo State. I work with a lot of you and you hold a special place in our hearts and our reforms agenda. We are in government because of you, the youths of Edo State".

He noted that the priority of his administration is the youths of the State which is why his government is preparing and strengthening the youths to take charge of tomorrow.

The governor continued: "As a government, our priority is the youths, that is why we are spending so much time and money to fix our educational system, and make sure the foundation of the system is very strong. We thank all the administrators that have worked with us to make our educational flagship programme recognized globally as one of the transformative programmes in the world."

The governor said his administration has continued to work with young people to create jobs in so many areas, adding, "We must work closer with the youth council in designing all the programmes to enable you participate and take charge of all the programmes designed to create jobs for the young people.

"We will continue to invest in human capacity and technology because that is the future that the world is going to.

"I am glad that I am here and now that you have made me your patron, I will work with your chairman to direct the affairs of this council till I leave office because I have seen the potential of this council.

"In terms of the executive of the council, only young people who are currently executives will direct the affairs of the council. We will make sure we limit interference from outside. Government under my watch will invest real time in youths.

"First we are going to secure this property, only those who have to be here will be here. It's a center for youths not a business center. I will make sure we build a real youths center. I will take the design that was here before, modify it and in this year's budget, I am putting N2 billion naira to complete this youths center. I will make sure thar before I leave office everything we need to rebuild this place is done.

"Within the next 30 days, I am going to connect this property to OSSIOMO Power so that you can have almost 24/7 electricity here. Within the next 30 days I will provide free wifi here. I will secure this place and give all of your members residency ID cards and that is what will give them access to this facility. I will ask Edo jobs to come and create a job center here to enable you interract closely with government to see what we are doing. Some of your executives and volunteers will now work with Edo jobs."

Obaseki noted that his administration is creating many opportunities for the youths but the youths are not taking advantage of these opportunities.

"This government is for you, you came out to vote for me and have a responsibility to protect you".

Obaseki added, "I want to apologize over the unfortunate incident that happened with the youths council election. It was done without my authorization and knowledge. As you can see now, the reason why my deputy Governor manipulated your election is because he has political ambition and thought he could control and use the council to achieve his political goals. Please I apologize. Going forward you will have an independent, well organized and well covered transparent election."

Commending the youths, Edo First Lady said, "You are the one we are looking up to. That is the reason why we are getting involved in your affairs and life and are here to support you. We are expecting great things from you and are confident that you will not disappoint us."

lnt’l Youth Day: Edo youths laud Obaseki for green skills training, commitment to environmental sustainability

Edo Youths have commended the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, training young people in the State with green skills to help protect the environment.

The commendation was made by a cross-section of youths from across the state participating in a three-day camping in Benin City, organised by the Ministry of Youth and Humanitarian Affairs and supported by GIZ and Romanpage Global, to commemorate International Youth Day 2023, with the theme, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.”

The youths who were taught about the problem of greenhouse gases and global warming by Victor Obaro, Director of Training in Business, Kushi Expert, were advised to make conscious efforts to save the earth by imbibing the right attitudes to save the environment.

According to him, “Most disasters are man-made and consequences of neglecting the climate. The training is to teach the best technology that can prevent adverse causes on the environment and facilitate green skills”.

The over 200 youths who camped at Wellspring University, from the 10th -12th of August 2023, were trained on: creative skills, green skills, the Internet of Things (IoT) in Green skills, the rise of artificial intelligence in the creative industry, and a presentation on the power of expressive arts therapy: harnessing creativity for mental health healing.

Commending the governor, Cynthia Balogun, a University of Benin Law student, “We were taught that we can apply the Internet to every area of our lives. The Internet of things can be used in agriculture and traffic control to avoid congestion on our roads,” she noted.
