PoliticsShaibu Desperate To Become Governor, May Consider A Coup To Overthrow Me by Aisosa25(op): 11:36am On Aug 11, 2023
Shaibu desperate to become governor, may consider a coup to overthrow me, says Obaseki

…reveals real reasons behind the fracas

…expresses shock, disappointment with deputy gov’s actions

…takes LG campaigns to Etsako West, East, Central

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his deputy, Philip Shaibu, is desperate to become the next governor of the State and will explore every possible means to achieve his desperate ambition including ousting him (the incumbent) through a coup.

Obaseki said this during a meeting with elders and leaders from Etsako West, East and Central Local Government Areas of the Statd, held in Jattu, Etsako West LGA, as part of campaigns for the September 2, 2023, local council election.

The governor said, "My Deputy Governor has become so desperate to take over and is ready to do anything including carrying out a coup d’etat to ensure he kicks me out and become the governor of Edo State.”

Obaseki, who expressed shock and disappointment over the recent actions of his deputy, said: "What struck me was his action after the proclamation of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) and preparing to elect officers in the House. He was in Abuja and came back that day. I am the Chief Security Officer of the State, I get any information I need but keep quiet about it and use that information quietly.

“My Deputy called a leader in APC telling him that during the election of Speaker of the House of Assembly the next day, that he has five loyal members and that he would like the seven members of the APC in the House to work with him to produce the Speaker. I called the PDP members to my house to familiarise myself with them following this information. Shaibu tried to barge in. I said you can't come into my house. It's my private house, not even the Government House. You have to have the courtesy, but now it's my prerogative to allow you in or out.

“After hearing what he did, I didn't allow him to come in. The next day, we went to the House and he came and we elected our Speaker. What he did is not working in the interest of the party. How can he have a different candidate aside from what the governor wants?”

Obaseki further narrated how he sacrificed to ensure Shaibu retained his position as deputy governor after they had moved from the APC amid the crisis in the run-up to the 2020 Governorship poll.

He said, "Remember the unfortunate incident that made a lot of you to leave with me from the other party? When that problem started, I told you and you said where ever I go, you will go with me. As one family fighting injustice, we went to PDP and many of the leaders in unity said Obaseki must return.

"In that process, I insisted that for me to be governor, Philip Shaibu must be my deputy and never allowed any negotiation on that stand. If you want me to serve as governor of Edo State, it must be me and my deputy.

"But you have had my deputy say many times that he escorted me to PDP and many times we have challenges in integrating into the PDP platform but since we started, I learned to give people responsibility because of my background to enable us to build institutions rather than individuals.

"In anything I am doing, I am open to the SSG and my deputy and give them responsibility. When I went on vacation I handed over power to my deputy. He called me while on vacation on some issues but I told him that he is in charge, urging him to go ahead and make mistakes. When I am back, we would correct it together.

"I am an individual and anything that happens to me, Edo must continue as no vacuum in power. We work as a trio and everybody must know what each other is doing and that can only be possible if there is absolute trust that the person will not go back to betray you.

"That is how we ran Edo State in the last seven years, facing crisis but we can't continue to live in crisis. At some point, we look for peace.”

Obaseki added, “Election that brought us in was a difficult one for us in Edo North, and after the election, I felt it was time to correct the mistakes made in the election. In all, I trusted him to manage it, including appointments, asking him to talk to leaders and make me know what they want. Even contract, I left for him to preside over and look at how we fell in the election.”

Obaseki, who frowned at how the Deputy Governor has mismanaged the politics in Edo North said his style of handling political issues in Edo North has caused the party not to elect any member from the area into EDHA.

He noted, "Today PDP doesn’t have one member in the House of Assembly from Etsako, and this has never happened before. In my background, if you are given responsibility and you fail, we change you immediately but I didn't do that. Rather, I decided to continue to manage the situation.

"Local government elections came, and the same thing happened. I called on him severally to settle issues here in Edo North but everywhere we went, it was trouble and crisis and we can't run a party like this, but I didn't react but continued managing the party.

"We came to Chairmanship and the problems continued. First, it was in Owan and then Akoko-Edo followed. In Akoko-Edo, the people said this is the person they wanted but my deputy said no, this is who I want and will give you but I insisted that he gives the people what they want. After consultations, I insisted that he allows the people to have their way and lead.”

The governor further stated, "The constitution made me the Governor of Edo State and gives me the power of the governor and I know the powers of the governor. The constitution never provides for a co-governor. It provides for a deputy governor who carries out the responsibility the governor gives to him but does not give the deputy the power of the governor.”

Noting that the deputy governor never discussed his governorship ambition with him, Obaseki said, "He went to Abuja and didn't tell me only for me to see him on social media and television as the video was all over the place. He was going around boasting to leave the party.

"Before now, he has been going around saying he is consulting. We had a meeting and I urged them to ensure we finish strong as whatever we do now will help us sell who will succeed me. I charged them to all come together to solidify the party, as PDP will produce the next governor of the State.

"I took an interest in the local government elections so that we can consolidate and unify our party. Issues were out during the nomination and everywhere I went there were already camps for the deputy governor but I told him I have not finished my term as governor, he should allow me to finish. But he has never come to me to tell me he wants to contest.

"He told me he is going on holiday and I approved it for him as usual. He didn't tell me he is travelling but the next thing I saw was a court summons that he wants to be impeached. I called the Speaker to find out from him but he said there is nothing like that going on. But what bothers me is for him to swear an affidavit that we stopped him from coming into EXCO. This is wrong information from a public officer.”

The governor added, "I am not angry but disappointed because there is nothing to life as God alone gives power. I don't have the power to say who will succeed me but only have a say. The person you are apologising for has not told you he did anything wrong as the first thing is to get your son to first agree that he has done something wrong. I cannot stay without defending myself in Court. If he is really ready and shows remorse, we will look at the situation.”

A leader of the Party in Etsako, Chief Ogedegbe Bitrus, said the meeting was called by the leaders and elders of Etsako to appreciate him for his developmental strides across the State, noting that they are not in support of the deputy governor's actions.

Edo LG Polls: Obaseki, PDP kick-off campaign from Edo North

…assures completion of all ongoing projects

…receives over 4000 APC decampees in Owan

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, leaders and members of the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, kicked-off the party’s campaign for local council elections in the State in Edo North Senatorial District, reassuring that his administration will not leave any stone unturned in delivering the dividends of democracy to the Edo people.

The campaign team which was received by an unprecedented jubilant crowd at the various locations visited stopped at the Secretariat of Owan West Local Governments Area for an interactive session with leaders in the LGA.

The campaign train also stopped at Owan East LGA where the governor urged the people to come out en masse on September 2, 2023, to ensure the party’s victory in the local council polls.

Addressing the leaders in Owan West, Obaseki reassured of his government’s commitment to improving the livelihood of the people and ensuring economic prosperity for the State, pledging to ensure the completion of all ongoing projects across various locations in the State.

He said, "We are kicking off our local government campaign from Owan West. We in the PDP will not say what we can't do.

"It's a long process to get here and the future is very bright as it's only PDP that can rescue Nigeria. Look at what we are doing in Edo State. We have so many projects ongoing and in the next one year, we will do our best and ensure these projects are completed, including the one at Owan West here.”

Addressing the stakeholders, the Edo PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi said, "Owan West is a model in terms of how you organise yourselves as a party. Owan West is the first local government area to handle all its issues and is now prepared for the election. We thank all the party leaders and chairman of the LGA.”

On his part, LGA party Chairman, David Okoh Aigbodion, while commending the governor’s developmental strides and for supporting a son of Owan to become the Edo House of Assembly Speaker, said: “We are all united as we have resolved all our issues before this time and are very ready and prepared for the election on September 2, 2023.”

The governor also received over 4, 000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who decamped to join the PDP.

Receiving the decampees, the governor said all the party candidates in the forthcoming local council election are credible and qualified men and women, who will bring development to various areas across the State, in line with his government’s vision to make Edo great again.

“We are presenting local government chairmen that stay with the people to develop the council areas. PDP is the party in the State; the party that will develop the State and make life better for the people. Dickson Ahonsi is a man that will bring development and progress to the people of the area. Vote for PDP, vote for development and progress.”

On his part, the Chairmanship candidate of the party, Dickson Ahonsi pledged his unalloyed commitment to the development of the area, commending the people for their support.

While the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, thanked the people for their massive turnout to receive the governor and his team, appealing to them to come out en masse on September 2, to ensure PDP wins the election.

Leader of the decampees, Joseph Agbabaku, said, "With the developmental stride of the governor in the State and local government area, we were encouraged to join the party and contribute our quotas to ensure the party keeps winning in the council area.”

Obaseki, while speaking in Owan East, said, "I am here to present a dependable and qualified candidate to you. A candidate you can trust; a man who can work to transform the council area.

"If you have a good chairman, such a person will represent you well and inform me of any challenges and problems you’re facing and such will be addressed because I can't see what is happening here. It's good to elect a chairman with the fear of God and love of the people, who is ready to work for the people.”

Also, a leader in the local government, Barrister Jimoh Ijegbai said, "The governor has tarred not more than five roads in Afuze and we are sure of the victory of the party in the forthcoming local government election on September 2, 2023.”

Obaseki pledges extension of internet connectivity to UNIBEN

…recommits to revamping of education system, youth devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has pledged to connect the campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) with internet connectivity to enable the management and students of the institution to enjoy free internet services.

Obaseki said this while giving his remarks at the League of Brainiacs, an academic competition between 15 faculties of the institution, held at the school premises, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The governor, who was accompanied by his wife, Betsy and other members of the State Executive Council, commended the students for organising the unique programme and showcasing their intellectual prowess and academic excellence.

He said, “I am pleased you organised this academic event yourselves which emphasises the reason why you are in school: to learn and acquire knowledge. I am totally committed to this event and what you have done here today.

“Our priority as a government is to be committed to young people who will lead tomorrow. This has made my administration emphasise basic education, ensuring we focus on the foundation, with the quality of education that will make the Edo child compete with any other child across the globe.

“We must look for ways for the government to support you. I urge you to play more roles in government as it's your government. Nobody will come to fix the nation for us but we will fix it ourselves. We all can't run away from this country but we will encourage you as youths to contribute to the development of the nation.”

On their performance at the competition, the governor further noted, “Listening to your various presentations, I said to myself how can this programme be sustained and ensure it continues. I am going to advise the Students Union Government (SUG) President to institute a Trust in his time and I will support that Trust to keep the programme going annually. I will put the first N10 million into that t]Trust so that it wouldn’t be a one-off event but will continue beyond the tenure of this administration of SUG.”

He added, “I assure you of my support before leaving office as governor. My present to you is that within 30 days from today, I will give you free Wi-Fi to ensure connectivity in the institution's premises.”

On her part, the Edo First Lady, Besty Obaseki, while commending the students, reassured the government’s commitment to youth development, noting, “The governor is in politics to show Nigeria how to govern well. Nigeria's political space has been taken over by people who don't know. Those who don't know have overwhelmed those who know in Nigeria.”

She added, “You are in an environment of people who know and are grooming young people who will know and people we need to govern Nigeria. Nigerians have suffered in the hands of illiterate people in government and politics as they have stolen our patrimony and impoverished the people.”

Also, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Lilian Salami, applauded the governor for extending infrastructural development to the federal government-owned institution of learning.

Salami, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Ekenwan Campus, Dele Ayinde, said: “The institution has never had it this good in terms of infrastructural development. We thank the governor for ensuring UNIBEN feels the impact of his administration.”

The SUG President, Comrade Israel Monye, while commending the governor’s strides in the education sector, said the programme was organised to harness the talent of the students of the institution.

PoliticsEdo North Leaders Berates Shaibu’s Governorship Ambition, Warn Dep Gov Against by Aisosa25(op): 7:17pm On Aug 08, 2023
Edo North leaders berates Shaibu’s governorship ambition, warn dep gov against fueling crisis

…insist Shaibu can’t be Edo’s next gov after 18 years in political office

…hails Obaseki’s devt strides

Leaders of Edo North Senatorial District, the senatorial zone of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, have distanced themselves from his governorship ambition, warning the deputy governor against fuelling the crisis in the State.

The leaders, who briefed journalists in Benin City, said the deputy governor has been a political office holder for over 18 years, including eight years as an Edo House of Assembly member, 18 months as a member of the House of Representatives and seven years as Deputy Governor, urging him not “to let his selfish interest cause crisis or instability in the State.”

The Edo North leaders who are also leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the senatorial district hailed Governor Godwin Obaseki for his developmental strides across all sectors of the State, charging the deputy governor to take a cue from his boss and focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the State who he swore to serve.

Leaders of the group and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Alhaji Kabiru Ajoto, commended the governor for employing over 579 persons who are from Afemai origin into the Edo State Civil Service, adding that the Afemai people have benefited greatly from the Obaseki-led administration.

Addressing journalists at the Secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State chapter, Adjoto, said: “The governor has been magnanimous in his dealing with his deputy as he has created the opportunity for him to shine but Shaibu has taken the simplicity of the governor for stupidity.”

According to him, “We are here to amplify the voice of the majority of the people from the six local government areas in Edo North as we have all taken our position to stand with the Governor of Edo State in the ongoing crisis which is really uncalled for.

“What is happening now is really unfortunate as the people of Edo North have met severally over a week thinking of what to do over the face-off between Governor Obaseki and Shaibu. We sent a powerful delegation to the deputy Governor to make peace with his boss but were surprised that he turned it down. We reached out to him but he turned the offer for peace down.

“Taking the governor to Court is most unfortunate and we can't keep quiet but to speak out over the development. The Deputy Governor decided not to work closely with Mr. Governor because of personal ambition to become governor of Edo State.”

He continued: “The people of Afemai are not with the deputy Governor even though he is our son. We are solidly behind Governor Godwin Obaseki. He has done so well for the people. An Afemai man has been the Speaker of the Edo Assembly and now, we are still the speaker in the House. We have also been the Chief of Staff in the past. We have signature projects in Edo North. Agbede-Ewan Road is over 30km, the Sabongida-Ora Road is a big project. The governor has revived the fertilizer factory in Edo North, among many other laudable projects.

“In the history of deputizing in Nigeria, Obaseki has made Comrade Philip Shaibu a household name in Nigeria because the Governor created the space for him to function effectively. Edo North people are grateful to his Excellency for this.

“Enough of these political shenanigans. We want to tell the governor that Edo North people are ready to follow him and whoever he points at to succeed him, we will support him because we know his judgement can't be wrong as he has done well for Edo people.”

He added, “As Speaker of EDHA, I have worked closely with Obaseki, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Shaibu. I am an insider and want to tell you that the entire crisis over the years between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, Shaibu is the brain behind them. Comrade Philip Shaibu created all these problems that we are experiencing in our political space today.

“In the coming days, I will tell the world what Shaibu has done to fuel the crisis between Obaseki and Oshiomhole over the years. He has succeeded in creating a big rift between Obaseki and Oshiomhole. Philip Shaibu sowed a seed of discord in Edo politics today.”

The former EDHA Speaker further noted, “Shaibu has been in government for 18 years now. Eight years as an EDHA member, 18 months at the National Assembly as a member House of Representatives and seven years as Deputy Governor of Edo State, and by the time he finishes next year, he would have spent 18 years uninterrupted. Now, he wants to be governor. Is he the owner of the State?”

On his part, Former Owan East Local Government Chairman Owan East and Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Jimoh Ijegba who spoke for the Owan people in Edo North said, “We are here for peace and in support of the governor of Edo State who has done so much for the Afemai people. We are grateful for the gesture towards us. This crisis is a complete distraction and the crisis is uncalled for. The governor should remain focused and never be distracted from his duties as we in Edo North will continue to give him the support he needs.”
HealthWe’re Building Quality Infrastructure, Capacity, Institutions, Others To Rejig by Aisosa25(op): 6:29pm On Aug 08, 2023
We’re building quality infrastructure, capacity, institutions, others to rejig Edo’s healthcare system, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, said his government, in the past six years, focused on revamping and strengthening the State’s healthcare system, prioritizing investment in the development of infrastructure and capacity building.

Obaseki said this during a presentation titled, ‘Transforming the Healthcare Sector,’ at an interactive session between Edo State Government and members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Edo State Chapter, Private Medical Practitioners, and other stakeholders in the health sector, held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City.

Obaseki, who reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring a resilient health system to deliver quality, efficient, and affordable healthcare services to Edo people, called for the collaboration and support of all stakeholders to sustain reforms in the health sector in line with the government’s vision to transform Edo as a hub for medical tourism.

He said, “We can’t resolve all the health issues we met in eight years but we promised that in these eight years, we will set a new direction and start the change of making Edo what it used to be in terms of health services. We hope that in another 20 to 30 years, we will be where we ought to be and want to be regarding the healthcare system.

“First is to rebuild our institutions because, without the right institution, we can’t develop. Institutional development is key. We are focusing on training the people. In changing the healthcare system in Nigeria, it must begin in Edo State.”

According to him, “We must all agree and look at healthcare as a system and ask the role of government in the healthcare system. Our healthcare system was designed by the British when Central Hospital was built in 1918 as it was built around the government but as time went by, a lot of private investment came into healthcare, changing the face.

“As a government, we sat down six years ago to rethink our healthcare services, anchored on four pillars. My role is to regulate the healthcare industry as the government is not the largest provider anymore. The second role is to train, support and produce quality manpower for the Healthcare Industry. Third is healthcare financing as people find it difficult to pay for healthcare services and make progress with the Edo Health Insurance Scheme.”

The governor added, “Healthcare financing is the basis upon which everything rests in the system. Our health Insurance scheme has done well in these past years. We are moving towards enrolling 300,000 persons. Our goal in another year, if we push harder, will be to enroll one million people, bringing a significant pool of resources.”

Noting that efforts to rejig the healthcare system in the state have been focused on primary healthcare centres. Obaseki further noted, “Our emphasis is on Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs). Every citizen need not drive beyond five kilometers before reaching a PHC center. The Government can't afford to run many secondary care centers or facilities but I urge private practitioners to key in as over 10 private healthcare providers have come to invest in Edo State with an average investment of about 10 million dollars each.

“We need a radical rethink of where we are coming from. The era of general hospitals is gone. There is no reason why government hospitals should not and cannot compete effectively with private hospitals as both are treating patients. Government hospitals should produce the highest quality of manpower and compete effectively with any other provider.”

On capacity development to sustain the reforms in the sector, the governor stated, “We want to spend our resources in training and providing the manpower for the health industry

“We have a lot of transformation going on in the State as nobody will come to build the system for us. The responsibility to fix the system lies with most of us. Edo is going to be a medical hub in the next 50 years as we train critical personnel for the health system. Our location is strategic and people pass through the State. We have also invested in electricity to create an environment comfortable for investment.”

Reiterating that the government was strengthening the regulation of the system, he added, “Nobody should be able to open any facilities without approval to do so. Our emphasis is now on regulation as we police the space to ensure those that ought not to be there are driven out of the system. We will work with NMA to eliminate quackery. We will make a strong regulatory function supported by you to stop quackery in the State.”

On his part, the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Ali, commended the governor for prioritizing investment to strengthen the State’s system, ensuring quality healthcare delivery to the people of the State.

He noted that the Obaseki-led administration has upgraded over 20 PHCs while 12 others are currently being upgraded, adding “over 250 health workers have been recruited this year to strengthen the State’s healthcare system.”

The Chairman of NMA, Edo State Chapter, Dr. Udoka Imoisili, while commending the governor for his development strides in the health sector, said the association is willing to collaborate with the government to move the health sector in the State to an enviable height.

Subsidy removal: NLC lauds Obaseki’s intervention, requests for more modular refineries license in Edo

The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Chapter, Comrade Odion Olaye, has called on the Federal Government to issue more modular refinery licenses to operators in the state to expand the state’s refinery output, noting that the state is already leading the charge of boosting local production of refined petroleum products.

Olaiye noted that the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has set the right example by making the state a conducive environment for investment in the oil and gas sector, noting that two modular refineries are operational in the state.

Hailing the governor for his worker-friendly policies, he said: “The removal of fuel subsidy has caused hardship to all the citizens of the nation. We thank Mr. Governor for reducing the working days of civil servants to three days in a week. We appeal to the President of Nigeria to allow Nigerians to breathe.

“We want the Federal Government to fix the three refineries we have in Nigeria and also give licenses for more modular refineries in Edo State so we can refine more products and sell to Nigerians,” he said.

Olaye added: “Fuel price has been increased by 300 percent so workers’ salaries should also be increased by 300 percent.”

He hailed the governor’s plan to allocate N500 million as the state’s palliative package to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal, noting that the governor’s efforts are well intended.
PoliticsBreaking: No Plot To Impeach Deputy Governor, Says Obaseki by Aisosa25(op): 7:38pm On Aug 07, 2023
No plot to impeach Deputy Governor, says Obaseki

…Court action a preemptive move ahead of his defection to APC

...Edo North leaders dissociate from Shaibu’s governorship ambition

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, stated that there is no plan to impeach his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu.

The governor, however, noted that the move by Shaibu seeking a court order to stop his purported impeachment is preemptive ahead of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is as leaders of Edo North Senatorial District, the senatorial zone of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, distanced themselves from his governorship ambition, warning the deputy governor against fueling the crisis in the State.

The governor, while briefing journalists in Benin City during a visit by the Edo North leaders, said the deputy governor has been actively engaging with senior actors both at the national and state level of the APC, negotiating his way into their party, adding that he is at the verge of finalizing moves to defect to the APC.

He said, “Let me put it on record that I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan.

“So, the Court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.”

He noted, “It's clear what has happened in the last few weeks. It is a preemptive move for him to conclude what he has started. Those of you from Akoko-Edo can recall that when we were discussing the issue of your local government chairman and that of Owan, there was a lot of resistance from you on the candidates he wanted to impose on you. I listened to your entreaties and thought that what you were recommending was fair. How can he be recommending the son of an APC leader in that local government? You resisted and I saw reason and acceded to your request.

“The next day, I saw on social media that he was in Abuja robbing minds with the opposition party. I have heard for months now that he has been in closed consultation with friends from another party because he was not sure that you, the leaders of PDP, will give him the ticket as governor in 2024.”

The governor noted, “I must State here that Philip Shaibu has never had the courtesy to discuss his ambition with me. The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor.

“I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it's unfair for our party. We don't need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world and it's rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.”

He further stated, “I am not angry but naturally I should be disappointed. I understand what is going on. I thank you for your solidarity. We should not be distracted but consolidate and unite our party and bring all on board. As we start our local government campaigns tomorrow, I urge you to join me so that we can build a PDP that will continue to dominate the politics of Edo State as we must finish well so our people will continue to give us the mandate. Edo will continue to be great as our collective efforts will drive our future as no one man can be bigger than all of us.”

Leader of the group and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Alhaji Kabiru Ajoto said, “We are here to amplify the voice of the majority of the people from the six local government areas in Edo North as we have all taken our position to stand with the Governor of Edo State in the ongoing crisis which is really uncalled for.

Obaseki hail D’Tigress for 4th consecutive AfroBasket victory

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has congratulated the Nigerian women's basketball team, D’Tigress for their fourth consecutive Afrobasket victory in Kigali, Rwanda.

The governor, in a statement, hailed the team for their doggedness, courage and staying power, noting that they emerged victorious against all odds.

According to him, “I celebrate Nigeria’s women basketball team, D’Tigress, for their victorious rally in Kigali, Rwanda, where they retained their place as Africa’s most successful women basketball team.

“The team was dogged and competed with passion, ensuring to clinch the top prize despite the challenges along the way. They displayed the indomitable Nigerian spirit and have made us all proud with their performance.”

He added, “Their show of strength and superior firepower serves as an inspiration for young girls across the country, even as they have given a good account of themselves.

“I congratulate the team, the coaching crew, and all those who contributed to their success and wish them even more success in future.”

Obaseki: We’re diversifying Edo’s economy, investing in sports, agric, others to boost GDP

…honours Nigeria’s Montreal '76 heroes, celebrates legacies of late Samuel Ogbemudia

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration is diversifying the State’s economy, sustaining investment in sports, culture, technology, agriculture and other critical sectors of the State to increase its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and boost economic growth.

Obaseki said this during a State Dinner in honour of legends of the Samuel Ogbemudia sports revolution in the old Midwest/Bendel State and Olympians, Dr. Godwin Obasogie, Charlton Ehizuelen and Dr. Bruce T. Ijirigho, among others, at the Government House, in Benin City.

The governor, who reaffirmed his government’s commitment to grassroots sports development, said the government has made sports compulsory in all public schools across the three senatorial districts of the State to groom and harness the sporting talents of youths in the State.

He commended the late Samuel Ogbemudia for creating amazing sporting facilities in the then Midwest/Bendel State and also opportunities for youths to excel, which led to the discovery of Obasogie, Ehizuelen, Dr. Ijirigho, boxing legend, Isaac Ikhuoria and other Olympians.

He said, “Sports is about leadership as our father, the former governor of old Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia provided that leadership. He provided the opportunities and facilities and the youths expressed themselves the way they did and brought pride to the State.

“We want to thank these heroes. There is no excuse for us not to create the enabling environment for sports to thrive in the State and Country because it happened in time past. We have no excuse not to make it happen again.

“Someone built the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and we came and improved on it and put world-class facilities that are of world standard. We have also gone ahead to build 20 mini stadiums across the State to achieve the goal of making the State a destination for sports.”

He stated, “We thank God for our sports administration as sports is now compulsory in all our public schools. We have a department for school sports in the Ministry of Education. Schools are now beginning to do inter-house sports and now have a hunting ground for talents. We can't thank you enough for creating another world-class competition to help us encourage talents.

“It’s up to us who God has given the responsibility to lead to make it possible for the coming generation to continue in that line of greatness and create the platform for them to express that God-given talent and excel in sports.”

On diversifying the economy, Obaseki noted: “We are working hard as a government to diversify the economy of Edo State from crude oil to human activities such as sports, culture, technology, and agriculture as these areas will account for the GDP of our economy. We are working hard but there is resistance but we will overcome it.”

Celebrating the Olympians, the governor added, “We are to honour the labour of our Olympians. We thank God for their lives as they are Edo people and they represented us well. This means that there is talent in Edo State as the achievements of our people in sports did not start today but runs in our blood.

“We are celebrating our heroes and heroines. They are not just athletes but patriots. They made us proud. They deserve to be honoured and we thank the Managing Director of Air Peace for honouring these men.”

Legends of the Samuel Ogbemudia sports revolution in the old Midwest/Bendel State and Olympians, Dr. Godwin Obasogie, Charlton Ehizuelen and Dr. Bruce T. Ijirigho, have assured that they will support the Edo State Government in grooming athletes in the State.

The trio gave the assurance after touring the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Wednesday.
They commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for transforming the stadium into a world-class complex.

Obasogie said: “The Governor has done a fantastic job. What I have seen in this stadium is unbelievable. This stadium has been transformed to a very high level. I never expected this. I was watching the roof on the television in the United States.

“I was grading and comparing the roof and can confirm that this is the same roof we have at Yankee Stadium, the newest Stadium in the U.S. I was watching it on television. Now seeing it, coming here, I can confirm that this is a fantastic job.

“If we had this when we were running, most of us could have set world-class records. The children need to come. We came out in our time without any of these. Some were running barefooted.

“We ran on Cinder tracks here in Ogbe Stadium. Look at these facilities. This is the Olympic standard. I have travelled widely. I have run across different countries. I have seen the facilities and this is truly fantastic.

According to him, “Like I saw those children training, I love what they were doing. If an event is happening here, we have to encourage the parents to let their children come out. Let the children take tours.

On his part, Ijirigho, said, “All the facilities we have seen are of world-class standards. We started our careers in this stadium as little boys. That was 53 years ago and we are back now to see what is here; It is amazing.”

He added, “Edo people should be grateful for this and what we have to do now is to get the young children out of their comfort zone. Get the parents to encourage the young children to bring them out.

“Let them come and take advantage of these facilities and rise to the top because this is all that is left to be done. We believe we can produce great world champions from this place.

“We have done it in the past. We can do it even in greater numbers right now because there is no excuse not to achieve greatness at this point, considering all of these facilities the Governor has put in place. We are impressed.

“We will work in partnership with the Governor. He has sports and youth at heart. He is the man who will make wonders happen in this stadium.

“We are coming to develop sports, particularly athletics. For now, we want to organise some competitions in the very near future. There will also be a major reunion for our team of 1971, which dominated this whole country in athletics.

“The competition will be organised with Edo and Delta states. The greatest team in athletics is in this country. We believe that more than 50% of the athletes that will represent this country in the future will be coming from that competition.

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Yusuf Alli, said: “If you look at the statistics of Nigerian sportsmen and women, probably about 20 to 25% of Delta and Edo in the national team. In those days, it was over 95%. That is what we are trying to replicate.

“I am glad that the three Olympians want to help us and contribute to what we are doing. The Governor has also given me the mandate that I must put one of them each in the Sports Associations as patrons.”

NLC Protest: Obaseki charges workers to reject FG’s fraudulent palliative, offers N500m monthly package

…says workers’ wages must reflect current reality

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration will disburse N500 million monthly to poor households in the State as palliative to cushion the effect of the economic hardship caused by the subsidy removal by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government.

Obaseki disclosed this while speaking to members of the Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by the Chairman, Odion Olaye and other labour unions, who were at the Government House, Benin City, on a peaceful protest over the hardship faced by workers and Nigerians as a result of the subsidy removal.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of workers and all Edo people, Obaseki said his government will sustain efforts to reduce the suffering and hardship inflicted on the people by the APC-led federal government.

According to him, “The APC government has thrown us into this mess and we can't ignore this fact but as Nigerians, we will do something about it. It may take time but we will prevail.”

He continued: “On May 1st this year, I warned Labour that we are likely to face the condition and situation we face today. I warned you in that speech not to wait but be proactive and plan ahead. Look at where we are today.

“We in Edo State will do our own bit and I have decided that every month, going forward, we will take N500 million from our money to give to the poorest of the poor in Edo State.”

The governor further charged, “I want to alert you to reject the palliative they want to give to you. It’s a continuation of the fraud that the Federal Government has always undertaken against the people of Nigeria. The so-called money for palliative should be given to the local government which is closer to the people to take care of their people.

“You can’t buy grains from Abuja because the money to transport it alone is enough to take care of the people. We should stop this palliative fraud in Nigeria. I call on the Nigerian Labour Congress to reject the Federal Government's palliative. Let them give local governments the money to give to the people as the Federal Government doesn’t have any business buying grains as palliative to be distributed across the 774 LGAs in Nigeria.”

He added: “We must stop this fraud. We are suffering too much in Nigeria and the Federal Government is insensitive to the plight of the people. In Edo State, we are labour-friendly and have increased our minimum wage two years ago N40, 000). The situation was not as bad as this before we took that step. We know that workers are suffering and need to do something about it as the take-home pay can't take workers home anymore.”

Commending workers for their resilience, the governor stated, “I thank you for the peaceful protest and as citizens you have every right to protest against any issue you are not happy about as you are acting on your constitutional rights. We support the action of the NLC that your wages must reflect the current reality. I have received your letter and will send it to the President of Nigeria.”

In his response, Comrade Olaye lauded the governor’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the State, as he has provided measures to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on the workers and other residents.

He said, “We, the NLC are here today to register our displeasure over the economic hardship in the country. We are supposed to go on a nationwide strike but we were restrained by the Federal Government.

“The removal of fuel subsidy has caused hardship to all the citizens of the nation. We thank you Mr. Governor for reducing the working days of civil servants to three days in a week. We appeal to the President of Nigeria to allow Nigerians to breathe.

“We want the Federal Government to fix the three refineries we have in Nigeria and also give license to the Modular Refinery in Edo State so it can refine products and sell to Nigerians.”

Olaye added, “Fuel price has been increased by 300 per cent so workers’ salaries should also be increased by 300 per cent.”

Edo launches new campaign to bolster efforts at becoming cleanest State in Nigeria

…begins daily clean-up exercise in major markets, roads, others

The Edo State Government has launched a new cleanup campaign to strengthen ongoing efforts by the government to transform Edo into the cleanest State in the Country, in line with its Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) Agenda

The exercise tagged “Cleanup MEGA” commenced in Benin City and will be expanded to other local government areas of the State to ensure a cleaner and healthier Edo State.

As part of the exercise, the Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Architect Joshua Omokhodion led other members of the team to clean up major markets, roads, and streets, among others

Other members of the team are health officials from Oredo Local Government Area, the Edo Waste Management Board, the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Edo State, and the Edo Tipper Drivers Association of Nigeria, among others.

Architect Omokhodion while addressing journalists after the exercise in Benin City, said the exercise is part of renewed efforts to transform the State into the cleanest and most conducive place to live in.

He said the programme which is in phases will be expanded, noting that “this first phase is a pilot scheme and a general model for the entire state. First to ensure that there is Monday to Monday cleaning of all the markets across the state.”

The Commissioner continued: “However, we would graduate into a monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The idea is that Mr. Godwin Obaseki said in the year 2030, Edo State would become a destination where people live in good health and their general well-being would be guaranteed. The only way to achieve this is to start a programme that makes Edo State as habitable as possible unlike what it used to be in the past.”

Omokhodion, while urging the people to participate actively in the exercise, thanked the Tipper Drivers' Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Road Transport Workers for their collaboration in the provision of additional trucks to support the evacuation of debris in some of the areas visited.

Earlier, the General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board (ESWMB), Charles Imariagbe, said: “We call it re-enactment because we once had that practice in the past. It is going to be a routine cleanup exercise.”

The Waste Management boss noted that trucks were designated to Siluko in Egor Local Government Area; Oregbeni and Ramat Park axis as well as other far-reaching locations within the Benin metropolis to ensure a hitch-free sanitation exercise.

According to him, “It is one of the mandates of Mr. Governor to see that Edo State becomes one of the cleanest states in the country. Therefore, we are telling the people to take responsibility by participating actively in the exercise. Going forward, the task force is going to reach out to traders and ensure compliance and create awareness of the consequences of violating the environmental laws.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has mourned the passing of legal luminary and Supreme Court Judge, Justice Chima Centus Nweze, who died aged 64.

Obaseki, in a statement, described the legal icon as a quintessential and intellectual jurist whose pronouncements on the bench advanced the cause of justice delivery in Nigeria.

The governor said, “I received with rude shock the sad news of the passing of Justice Chima Centus Nweze, a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Nweze, one of Nigeria’s most intellectual and revered jurists was a man of great wisdom and insights, who served the country with his rare knowledge and understanding of the law, advancing the course of justice delivery and contributing immensely to the unity and development of the Country.

“His demise leaves a huge gap in the Supreme Court considering his experience and dedication to interpretation of the constitution. He will be sorely missed.”

The governor added, “I commiserate with the judiciary and the Supreme Court as well as the Nweze family, friends, and associates and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

"Uncle Clement is 80 years and Sister is 75 years. There is a book to be launched and 52 years marriage anniversary to celebrate. All we need to do is to thank God and appreciate Him for the lives of Clement and Caroline Alile.”

He added, “It's a day of celebration and joy. They are special people and I made it a duty to be here to celebrate with them. I thank God for their lives and for making today possible. They have gone through good times and times of challenges. We pray for God to keep them in good health.”

On his part, Oyegun while congratulating the celebrants, said, "Clement Alile was my SSG when I was the Governor and he is a dependable person who served well but the military truncated that administration but the challenge is now faced with more problems.

"In time past, Nigeria had quality and trusted leaders who meant well for the nation. Edo is trying to create that path by laying the foundation for good leadership in the State and I pray the successor of the governor builds on that foundation.”

In his response, the celebrant, Clement Alile commended the governor for his developmental strides across all sectors of the State, appreciating him for his presence.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has led government officials to pay their respects to the late Hon. Samson Abu, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oredo Ward 1, who passed aged 65.

Obaseki at a burial ceremony for the late PDP leader, in Benin City, described Samson Abu as a dedicated and trustworthy party man who never compromised the interest of the party.

He said, “Hon. Samson Abu was more than a leader in Oredo Ward One; he is a PDP leader in Edo State. In his lifetime, he ensured he worked tirelessly for the party. As long as he is in the field, things will go according to plan.”

Hailing his contributions to the unity and growth of the party in the State, Obaseki noted, “He is a party loyalist and fought for the interest of the party; he never compromised.”

He continued: “Most times when the party needed a trusted person in the collation center to protect the interest of the party, he was the person sent to act for the party.

“We will miss him. We know where he stands on issues. His loyalty to the party was 100 percent and was never ready to negotiate. This was why we had no hesitation whatsoever in the appointment he got to represent our interest as a party in the South-South Council or help us with the illegal logging in our forestry or other role he held while alive. We will surely miss him.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has condoled with the family of the late Chief David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, describing him as a prolific writer, bridge-builder and master politician.

The governor led other top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., and Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, among others, on a condolence visit to the family, in Benin City.

Extolling the exemplary virtues of the late Benin Chief, Obaseki said, “In politics, he was a master politician who understood the politics of the past and of our time and understood the relationship between them. We want to thank God for his life.

“He was a bridge between people and generations. Baba was a bridge between tradition and modernity, rural and urban. We will miss him but we will continue to remember him for what he stood for.”

The governor further noted, “Esogban was one of my father’s best friends and they grew up together. When I told him I wanted to go into politics, he told me that he will stand in as my father since my father was no more. He took care of me politically. That was the relationship I had with baba. Baba knows everything about me because he started his politics in the sitting room of my grandfather, the late Chief Gaius Obaseki, the former Iyase of Benin Kingdom. We are a family and very close, I will miss him.”

According to Obaseki, “He was quite instrumental during my first term as Governor of Edo State. He reached out, mobilized for me far and wide, particularly in Edo South to support my ambition. I will always be grateful for that.

“He picks up the newspaper early in the morning as a prolific writer and statesman. He had his own understanding and was not selfish at all. As a prolific writer, he wrote several books across issues and I was wondering where he gets the time to write despite being the Esogban of Benin, performing his responsibilities.

“We will miss him as he lived a full life and was always there to remind us of who we are and where we are coming from. He always celebrated the Ugie Festival. He showed us the meaning of the festival and how to celebrate it.”

He added, “All we owe to him today is to give him the most befitting passage that he deserves to have as he gave so much to us. This is an opportunity to say thank you and appeal that you allow us to play a role in his burial.

“He has biological children; he also has political, literary and traditional children as well. We all will want to be part of the ceremony to celebrate him and what he stood for. Accept our condolences in the passing of a great and iconic Edo hero.”

In his response, the eldest son of the late Esogban, Rev. Collins Edebiri thanked the governor and his entourage for the visit, describing it as reassurance to the family that they are not alone in grief.

Edo steps up regulation of all unregistered, substandard schools

The Edo State Government has said it will, from August 2023, begin the clampdown on all unregistered and unapproved schools in the State, as part of renewed efforts to sanitise the education system.

This was disclosed by the Acting Director General (DG) of Quality Assurance (QA) of the Ministry of Education, Rosaline Okosun, during a meeting with leaders and private school owners in Edo State.

Noting that the government is stepping up monitoring of schools in the State, Okosun said the move is not to witch hunt anyone but to ensure quality and standard across schools in the State.

She said the Edo State Government has registered 1,716 private schools in the State, including 920 primary and 796 secondary schools.

According to her, “We have more than these numbers of schools in Edo State as others are not yet registered and we are here to work together and ensure all private schools in the State are registered. It's not business as usual as the Edo State Government is concerned about the learners and what they will benefit from the educational system.

“We will work with you, support you and ensure you succeed. Furnish us with the list of all your registered members and those that are not registered, automatically they are not your members. This move is all about improving the lives of our children.

“We want education that will favour our learners who are our priority. Actions will be taken as schools that don't meet the requirements and are sub-standard in terms of quality will be shut down from the month of August and such schools will not be allowed to open come September 2023 if they fail to meet the requirements.”

She continued: “The governor and the Ministry of Education want the best for Edo children as the policy of the State Government says basic education is free and compulsory for nine years. Our standards must improve, and we must stick to the education policies in the State.

“Two unions are present here today for this meeting while one was absent but are invited for another enlarged meeting on Monday 31st of July, 2023 where we expect you to mobilize your members enmasse for this crucial meeting on how to collaborate with you to move the education sector forward".

The State Secretary of the Association for Formidable Development (AFED), Oladele Ogundele, said: “We are ready to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and the Obaseki-led administration for the betterment of the education sector. We want a uniform content, curriculum, and lesson notes across the three Senatorial Districts.”

World Day Against Trafficking in Person: Edo reels gains of reforms to end human trafficking, illegal migration, assures sustainability

…receives 5,515 returnees, secures seven convictions

The Edo State Government has reeled out the impact of reforms and programmes by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to tackle the menace of human trafficking and illegal migration over the past six years, reassuring that the government will continue to strengthen the legal framework and institutions to stamp out the scourge in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT), Itohan Okungbowa Esq., disclosed this at a press briefing to commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Person, celebrated yearly by the United Nations and its sister agencies.

With the theme “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind,” World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2023 aims to raise awareness of disturbing developments and trends identified by the latest UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, and call on governments, law enforcement, public services, and civil society to assess and enhance their efforts to strengthen prevention, identify and support victims, and end impunity.

Okungbowa explained that the task force was set up to drastically curb the incidence of human trafficking and irregular migration in the state, and work with stakeholders in this regard to redeem the lost glory of the State, noting that the team has made huge progress with the task.

She said, “It is estimated that approximately 1,000,000 persons are trafficked globally and that between 20,000 and 50,000 are trafficked into foreign countries yearly. Under the ETAHT Welcome Programme, we have successfully received and welcomed 5,515 returnees in 79 batches from August 2017 till July 2023.

“ETAHT has secured seven convictions of traffickers, including a traditional practitioner (Native Doctor). The Judiciary dedicated two Special Courts to ensure quick dispensation of human trafficking cases.”

She noted that in compliance with the 2023 theme, the Edo task force has collaborated with different associations working against child, sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria, religious and traditional leaders, as well as civil society organizations and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government to tackle the scourge at all levels.

Okungbowa continued: “The Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking is in partnership with some stakeholders to create awareness against the ills of human trafficking and illegal migration, and also bring to the public the efforts the state go.

“The economic factor has in a long way projected human trafficking and with this, the state government has approached the tackling of human trafficking from diverse dimensions. Also, the programme, Managing Migration through Development 2.0, is part of the government’s pillar and programme to tackle the menace and eradicate human trafficking, providing a better alternative for the citizens to live right.”

According to her, “The instability of the economy has driven the government to approach managing migration through development by creating viable community projects that would attract potential migrants and returned victims and the entire society. Research done so far has shown that another factor of human trafficking is little education to those who were deceived and this led to much attention of the government on education.

“More so, there are other alternatives set by the government to all citizens in different parts of Edo State like skill acquisition. These are skill centres anyone can access free of charge. Human trafficking is an inclusive challenge which the government cannot fight alone but with a holistic approach, and by spreading our tentacles to schools, churches, mosques, the menace can be curbed.”

Obaseki renames 1st Ugbor Road after Archbishop Margret Idahosa

...sets for maiden Christian Music Festival with N50 million prize for winners

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has renamed 1st Ugbor Road in Oredo Local Government Area after Archbishop Margret Benson Idahosa of the Church of God Mission International.

Addressing journalists after a thanksgiving service at the Mega Convention 2023 and in celebration of the 80th birthday of Archbishop Margaret Idahosa, in Utesi Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State, the governor said the road was renamed to honour Margaret Idahosa for her contributions to modern evangelism in Nigeria.

Obaseki said as a child in Benin City, he knew what Archbishop Margaret Idahosa and her late husband represented and how they impacted the lives of people, noting, “Mama lives for all her children. She has sacrificed to make sure the children of the State have a good future.

“She provides healthcare and education to thousands of children in Edo State. We can’t thank you enough because God brought you to give us hope.’

The governor further noted, “Archbishop Margret Idahosa is an institution in Edo State. You can’t talk of modern-day evangelism of the Pentecostal movement in Nigeria today without mentioning the Idahosa family for the contributions they have made to our spiritual life. They have contributed to our society in the area of education, healthcare and youth empowerment. They have been a pillar of our society and our State.

“On her 80th birthday, the least we could do for her is to immortalize her so that her name will remain and generations to come will ask who she is. First Ugbor Road leading to Benson Idahosa University (BIU) Campus has been named after her to honour her for her contributions to the society, State and Country.”

He added: “We will continue to immortalize her. Looking at the performance of the young boys and girls on stage today, we will commence from this year a Christian music festival. We want our children to perform globally. We would be putting a N50 million prize for the winners of the Competition.

“We call on our youths in the State to come and showcase their talent. The stage is open for such competition. Youths across Edo State should go and start preparing as Mama will be here in December to present the prize to the winners.”

PoliticsAn Honest Advice To Save Elempe’s Residual Self-respect, Dignity by Aisosa25(op): 6:11pm On Jul 28, 2023
An honest advice to save Elempe’s residual self-respect, dignity

By Emeka Nwachukwu

I want to begin this piece of advisory to Dele Elempe with one of the last quotes by American rights activists, Martin Luther King Jr. that, “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

The quote is a poignant reminder that each individual, no matter how highly or lowly placed, must make a crucial choice in life-to stand tall and walk the path of honour and dignity, playing their expected societal roles without blemish or being swayed by self-serving motives that lead to only destructive ends, in which case, Elempe has unfortunately chosen the latter over the former.

I am providing this advisory with the assumption that Dele Elempe still possesses residual dignity and self-respect, which can be preserved and saved if he makes last-minute changes and tows the path of honour and integrity rather than continuing in his unethical path of spreading lies and falsehoods in pursuit of favor and crumbs from the table of politicians.

How does society take someone whose only job is to cobble together inconsistent sentences, spilling hogwash and advertising his jaundiced reasoning in a bid to by any slightest chance get access into the pockets of politicians?

Elempe must break away from the allure of easy money and instant gratification to find a decent-paying job so he can have ample time for productive work and not scheming with agents of underdevelopment who in their selfish interests and desperation are hellbent on undermining efforts by the performing government of Governor Godwin Obaseki to transform the State and place it on the path of economic prosperity.

To be fair to him, Elempe managed to secure a fairly decent education but has not taken his altruism beyond that point to look for a decent job from where he will earn an honest living.

What he does is rely on his passable use of the English Language to serve political gladiators who are willing to path with some money in exchange of an unpatriotic attack against the governor or any other person which they consider a hindrance to gaining unfettered access to the people’s purse in their selfish quest to satisfy their appetite for opulence.

I do not think that is an honourable way for someone who in all honesty has some level of education. Instead of pretending to be a journalist, why can’t Elempe actually be a journalist by going to get a job in a newspaper, radio or television station and earning an honest living rather than depending on handouts or crumbs from politicians as his only means of livelihood?

Luckily for him, the governor has undertaken holistic reforms across the State’s media assets, including the Nigerian Observer and the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), transforming them to world-class standards. These organizations present a platform where genuine journalists can thrive and uphold the values of truth, objectivity, and ethical reporting. Elempe should consider taking a leap of faith and submitting his applications to these media institutions if he thinks he has the qualification and expertise to be a media professional. This can provide Elempe a fine opportunity for an honest means of livelihood rather than hobnobbing with politicians for crumbs and staging laughable public relations (PR) stunts to shoulder his masculine responsibilities.

Dele Elempe should take a shot at grabbing his destiny with his own hands and actually making real provisions for himself and his family. I don’t think that being a pen for hire against a performing governor whose achievements across all sectors of the State’s economy have continued to gain global recognition, is a sustainable way for a family man to meet family expectations.

I will end this piece by reminding Dele Elempe that dignity and self-respect, like a fragile flame, can be extinguished when one compromises their values for short-term gains. I urge Dele Elempe to embark on a journey of rediscovery, where self-respect is no longer a distant memory but a guiding light illuminating the way forward for him. He must distance himself from writing for quick financial gains from politicians and embrace the nobility that comes with true journalism to save his residual self-respect and dignity.

Obaseki performs groundbreaking for skills lab, PHC at College of Nursing

… boosts nursing education, healthcare delivery

…sets up Public Health Nursing Department

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a skills laboratory and a Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) Complex at the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences in Benin City.

Addressing journalists at the ceremony, representative of the governor and Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, said the skills laboratory will boost the capacity of the college in developing critical manpower to sustain ongoing reforms in the State’s health sector.

He said the milestone is part of the Obaseki-led administration’s commitment to advancing health care and nursing education in the State, noting that the government has established the Public Health Nursing Department to improve healthcare delivery and facilitate the deployment of modern technology and equipment at the College.

According to him, “The State firmly believes in investing in education and healthcare as the two most crucial for building our prosperous society. As we break the ground for this department, we reaffirm our dedication to enhancing the quality of health services in our State.

“The establishment of the Public Health Nursing Department is a testament to ensuring that every citizen of Edo State has access to world-class healthcare facilities and competent healthcare professionals by providing specialized training and equipping our nursing students with cutting-edge knowledge in public health and empowering them to become agents of change.”

Obaseki added, “Public health plays a pivotal role in disease prevention, health promotion as well as addressing the unique care challenges in our State. The curriculum in this new department will be carefully designed to incorporate modern methodology and an inter-discipline approach to solving health issues.

“We are committed to collaborating with various health institutions, both locally and internationally as we open this department. We pledge to provide our faculty with all the necessary resources and support an environment of excellence and innovation, skills and research. Our dedicated nursing educators will be instrumental in shaping nursing and public health in Edo State.”

On her part, the Provost, Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Professor Patricia Ukaigwe, said, “Months ago, Governor Godwin Obaseki decided to revamp the School of Health Technology and amongst them is the School of Nursing. We keyed into that transformation with the reform agenda of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to house public health programmes in the College of Nursing.

“We quickly wrote to the regulating body to give us permission to transfer the existing Public Health Nursing from the School of Health Technology to Edo State College of Nursing Sciences. With that permission, we added to the existing programme that we had, which is the School of Nursing and School of Midwifery. So, now, we have the School of Public Health.

“With the whole transformation that the Governor of Edo State did for us, he gave us a separate Skills Laboratory for the School of Nursing and a separate laboratory for the School of Midwifery. He also approved a Primary Health Centre to serve the community. Etete Community will now have a Community Primary Health Center, including our Skills Laboratory. This building will also have a hub for telemedicine.”

…gov thrills African leaders, policymakers with policies to improve learning outcomes, others

Reforms to transform Edo’s education sector and tackle learning poverty in the State took centre stage at the Africa Heads of State Human Capital Summit (HCS), as the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, impressed African leaders and policymakers at the confab, sharing his government’s achievements in the State’s basic education system as well as the entire education ecosystem over the past six years.

Edo is the only sub-national invited as a state to the Africa Heads of State Summit and continues to stand out as a sub-national that is demonstrating strong political will and action to accelerate investments in learning and human capacity development.

The Summit, taking place in Tanzania's port city of Dar es Salaam between July 25-26, has in attendance over 1200 delegates, including African leaders, policymakers, and other development stakeholders from over 30 African countries.

Obaseki, who is a panellist at the Summit spoke on the theme, “From Strategy to Implementation in Education,” sharing insights on how the government’s bold and strong institutional reforms have translated to improved learning outcomes, identifying ongoing efforts to accelerate and sustain the gains recorded in the State’s education ecosystem.

According to the governor, “Edo State has become a reference on how a sub-national can undertake massive transformation and significantly improve learning outcomes in the public school system.”

He further noted, “We have over the past six years deployed significant resources to improve teaching and learning outcomes, focusing on the basic education sector with over 380,000 students from various public schools across the State currently benefiting from the State’s Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) Programme. With the success recorded in the basic sector, we are expanding the programme to capture secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the State.

“As a government, we understand the need for quality manpower in the overall development of our State and are investing aggressively in this regard, building the capacity of our people and ensuring a massive transformation throughout the entire educational system, from basic education to senior school, technical colleges and tertiary institutions, to guarantee highly-skilled graduates that can compete in the global workforce.”

Obaseki reforms: Edo govt-backed ethanol refinery projected to rake in $29m per annum

... ‘Plant to meet 5.8% of Nigeria’s annual ethanol need’

The Greenhill Ethanol Plant in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of State, has been projected to meet 5.8 percent of Nigeria’s ethanol needs and rake in about $29 million in revenue yearly at full capacity.

The projections were made by investment analyst and Chief Executive Officer of Dairy Hills, Kelvin Emmanuel through his Twitter handle, @realkelvin07, while reacting to a post on the progress update on the plant.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki inspected the plant facility at the weekend, noting that the speed of work is commendable. The ethanol plant is an offshoot of the state government’s drive to grow the state’s manufacturing sector by attracting private actors to invest in the state’s food processing sector.

The plant is projected to process 400 metric tonnes of cassava daily at full capacity and is expected to provide raw materials to the pharmaceuticals and beverage industries in the country, thereby curbing the importation of ethanol products in the country.

According to Emmanuel, “26.4m litres (per annum) at 100 percent capacity utilization or 5.8 percent of Nigeria's total annual consumption, not bad at all.”

On the economic benefits of the project, Emmanuel noted that ethanol is used “in blending conventional fuels to reduce carbon monoxide (to increase fuel to air combustion ratio that reduces sulphur content). It is also used in pharmaceutical manufacturing and in food manufacturing.”

The ethanol plant is being developed on the heels of proactive reforms by the State Government to attract investment in the state’s manufacturing sector, which is being aggressively pursued in transforming Edo State from a civil service state to a manufacturing hub.

The Greenhill plant is the second ethanol plant in Edo State. The other plant is being constructed by De United Foods Limited (Dufil), makers of Indomie noodles, as part of their integrated farm facility in the state, where cassava will be processed to ethanol also.

Hold FG responsible for bad state of federal roads, anguish from pump price increase - Edo govt

…says Obaseki can’t change fuel price, fix federal roads

The Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, has urged residents to hold the Federal Government responsible for the deplorable state of federal roads in the State and the continued suffering and hardship faced by the people as a result of the hike in fuel price, occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Osagie said this when he addressed a group of protesters made up of civil society organizations and activists who were at the Government House, Benin City, to lament the high cost of petroleum products which has affected the cost of living, inflicting hardship and suffering on the people.

The media aide said the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, cannot change the price of fuel or fix federal roads when such monies will not be repaid to the State to execute its own road projects, urging the protesters to channel their energies to calling on the Federal Government to awaken to its responsibilities.

According to him, “We have challenges with the Edo State Government roads that is why it will be difficult for us to take Edo people's money to fix Federal Government roads. FG collects 54 percent of FAAC and Local Governments and States share the rest 46 percent. Federal Government is just one entity while States are 36.

“The Edo State Government can't take its money to fix Federal Government roads when we know that such money will not come back to the State. We have State roads to be fixed like the Ekehuan Road, among others. We can't leave State roads to fix Federal Government roads.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki has been calling on the Federal Government to help fix the federal roads in the State, including Benin-Abraka Road and the Benin Auchi Road where our lawmaker almost died, as well as the Benin Sapele Road and the Benin-Lagos Road at the Ovia River Bridge but the calls fell on deaf ears as the Federal Government has not listened and there is no guarantee that they will act.”

He added, “The Edo State Government has a lot of things to do but it has actually done some things and these achievements should also be acknowledged by protesters like you when registering your grievances.”

On the pump price increase, Osagie said the governor can't singlehandedly change the fuel price as demanded by the protesters but will help channel their grievances in a letter to the appropriate quarters for action.

He noted, “Fuel subsidy is everybody’s problem as it is not only your problem. The governor can't restore subsidies or change the fuel price as you can tell the Federal Government yourself. However, we will collect the letter and hand it over to the governor for onward transmission to the President in Abuja.

“The people are suffering. We are also feeling the pinch and understand what you are going through. It’s not fair that the federal government plans to give N8,000 to ordinary people and give above N100 billion to the National Assembly as no reasonable person will accept that.”

Reacting to increased federal allocation to the State, the governor’s media aide said, “The issue of allocation increment is not correct and has not happened. My advice to you is never to throw allegations around and misinform the people because the information about an increment of State allocation is not correct but misleading. I urge you to make a statement with facts.”

Refuting rumoured plans by the government to use billions of public funds to buy official vehicles for Edo House of Assembly members, Osagie said, “It wouldn’t be fair for the governor to use billion to buy cars for EDHA members and fail to fix the roads in the State as both the legislature and the people have their expectations.

“Obaseki would act on your letter as he is a reasonable governor and will convene that which is beyond him to the appropriate authorities that would act on it.”

A representative of the protesters, Comrade Kelly Osunbor of Faculty of Peace Organization, lamented the anguish and pain of the people as a result of the fuel price hike, urging for the assistance of the State Government.
