As the clock winds down to the 2023 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be hoping to take over power in Abia State. To achieve, that, they would need one of these four politicians. In February, the APC targeted to register one million members in the state, during the registration and revalidation exercise of the party. The goal, target or reason for that is the heart of Abia, the seat of power in Umuahia. With recent additions of Rt. Hon. Uzor Azubuike, Obinna Oriaku, Chief Chibuike Nwaokeukwu (SAN), Hon Blessing Nwagba, Hon Nwaji and other former members of the PDP, the party's hopes to clinch victory in 2023 looks bright. Here are four members of the APC who are strong enough to cause an upset in the 2023 gubernatorial elections in Abia State. This list, however, is in no particular order. 1. Alex Otti Dr Alex Otti is a former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc. He was the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015 and 2019 where he lost, on both occasions, to Okezie Ikpeazu. In August 2020, Dr Otti said he was joining the APC for the good of his people, saying, "we must always put the people first". Otti promises to tackle insecurity, decayed infrastructure, unemployment, unpaid salaries and pensions, endemic poverty among other challenges when he is elected governor. 2. Uche Ogah Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah is the current Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development. The oil magnate and entrepreneur is also the President and CEO of Masters Energy Group, a business corporation with over 15 subsidiaries. Ogah joined the APC in 2017 and in 2019, he contested to become the governor of Abia State, losing to the incumbent governor, Okezie Ikpeazu. Ogah who enjoys the support of many youths and others who have benefitted from his philanthropy, has never hidden his desire to industrialise the state. That desire could make him try again in 2023. 3. Anyim Nyerere Chief Anyim Chinyere Nyerere is currently the Executive Commissioner representing South-East geoplitical zone at the National Pension Commission (PENCOM). The Obingwa-born has been in politics since 2007 when he first ran for the Senate to represent Abia South Senatorial District. A member of the APC Merger Committee, and a former National Vice-Chairman of the APC, Nyerere contested to become the governor of Abia State in 2015, but lost. Cubana Group owner, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana may be in trouble for disregarding some laws of Anambra State Burial/Funeral Ceremonial Control Law 2019 at his mother's funeral which held recently. Burial in Igboland, particularly in Anambra State is quite an expensive activity. There have been instances where the not-so-wealthy family have had to sell landed properties and other valuables just to show that they can also give their deceased a 'befitting' burial. This practice of spending heavily on burials lasted so long that it got to the point where giving the so-called befitting burial became a bragging right and an indices for measuring [in Nigerian parlance] the ones who have arrived. Then came the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor who began a campaign to put an end to expensive burials in Anambra State. The Catholic Bishop made the changes he wanted to see beginning with his immediate environment, which is the church. The Anglican Church saw that it made sense to try to control how much people spend on burials and adopted it. To ensure that his campaign succeeded, the Catholic Bishop lobbied the Anambra State House of Assembly to make laws to prohohit expensive funeral ceremonies in the state. The Anambra State Burial/Funeral Ceremonial Control Law 2019 was passed by the House of Assembly and same was forwarded to the state governor for approval. On 14th May 2020, Willie Obiano assented to the new burial laws. Friends and well wishers of Obi Cubana came from far and near in solidarity to the businessman; and for two days preceding the weekend of the burial, the social media space in Nigeria was awash with pictures and videos from the hometown of the bereaved family in Oba, Anambra State. However, the CEO of Cubana Group may have gone against some laws, as per the Anambra State Burial/Funeral Ceremonial Control Law 2019. 1. According to Obi Cubana's announcement of his mother's death, it happened in January 2021. That is six months ago. Whereas parts of the burial law stipulates that all corpses must be buried latest two months from the date of death. 2. The burial ceremony of Mrs Uche Iyiegbu lasted for several hours, while the law states that all burial services must start on or before 9AM and must exceed two hours. 3. According to the burial law, the deceased family shall not receive gift that exceeds the money for one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer and one crate of soft drink. However, friends and well wishers of of Obi Cubana did not only make arrangements for cash gifts in running into hundreds of millions, they also gave livestock: over 200 cows, 70 goats, and 20 rams as gift donations. As with any law in the world, disobedience comes with punishment. According to the law, any person who contravenes the burial laws shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N100,000 (one hundred thousand naira) or up to six months imprisonment. For many reasons, the burial of Obi Cubana's mother, Uche Iyiegbu Odoziaku has been the hottest topic all week, and it will not be surprising if it remains the number one trending topic for the weekend. There have been as much praises as criticisms from different quarters about the burial, with some saying "if you have the money, you are free to spend it however you like" while others argue that the monies expended on the burial was tantamount to waste. Whatever the case, there are few lessons to learn from the just concluded funeral in Oba, Anambra State. 1. Successful men and women should make it a duty to introduce and nurture successful young men and women purposefully. If you are a man, it is not enough to pay a lady/woman to spend the night with her. Within days, she will be out again in the street looking for more money because you only gave her a few naira notes to satisfy your desire. Think human empowerment. 2. We should abolish the 'my boy' culture. Some successful people are in the wont of going about with 'boys'. They go with these boys everywhere - from one office to the other. In most cases, the said boys do have dreams and aspirations, but because they are not introduced to the right offices, those dreams do not birth. 3. Everything is not about money. Invest in people! Money is good, but we should also encourage people to grow and progress. Imagine that Obi Cubana took Cubana Chief Priest in as a boy when they were introduced, or that he was always giving him money, instead of to invest in him by giving him a business to manage. What do you think would have become of the Chief Priest today? It is an age-long practice in Anambra to train the younger ones in business. Today, as the older men chill and relax, the younger men are creating the buzz. As the nomination of Lauretta Onochie continues to be debated in the Nigerian political sphere, here are other appointments President Muhammadu Buhari made that sent tongues wagging. President Buhari insisted on appointing these individuals into public offices despite strong public outcry and reservations about their persons. 1. Lauretta Onochie The most recent of these is the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, one of his personal aides on social media. Buhari nominated Lauretta Onochie as a Federal Commissioner for the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC). This nomination has drawn a lot of bad blood amongst many Nigerians who argue that Onochie should not occupy a position in INEC because she is a member of the APC. Recently, the PDP held a rally to protest the nomination of Onochie as an INEC commissioner. The party argued that Onochie will not be unbiased in her job as an electoral umpire. However, despite the cries, President Buhari insists on the nomination of Lauretta Onochie. As it stands, Onochie has denied being a member of the APC. She told the Senate during her screening that she stopped being partisan in 2019, but news, views, reports and rumours on social media say this is untrue. As the debate on Onochie continues to heat up, let us look at other nominations and appointments of President Buhari that were against public opinion. 2. Ibrahim Magu Ibrahim Magu assumed took charge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in November 2015. When his tenure expired, President Buhari nominated him again for screening for the same position in 2016. The the Senate said that security report available to it showed that Mr Magu is not fit to be chairman of the body. They also fingered him for corruption and financial irregularities. Despite all these, President Buhari sent Magu's name for reappointment in January 2017. Dino Melaye, a Senator from Kogi pointed out a few sins of Magu. The first was a report from the DSS stating that the EFCC boss owned a very expensive house and other properties that could not be explained. This document released by Dino Melaye also showed the process with which the EFCC forcibly confiscated assets from Nigerians who have cases with the EFCC. Magu denied the allegations and said he had no hand in them. President Buhari continued to nominate him as the Chairman of the EFCC despite these recommendations. 3. Mohammed Adamu In February 2021, a Nigerian lawyer, Maxwell Okpara sued President Buhari on the matter pertaining to then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. In the suit, Okpara argued that Mohammed Adamu's tenure had expired according to the law which states a civil or public servant shall not work more than 35 years, but Mohammed Adamu's lawyer provided proof that it was in fact the President who extended his client's tenure to exceed his service age. As the matter was in court and on the mouths of many Nigerians, President Buhari allowed Mohammed Adamu to stay in office another three months before he was replaced by Alkali Baba Continue reading: https://www.operanewsapp.com/ng/en/share/detail?news_id=3cd40658e3f4bb89eba3cacd26efceb3&news_entry_id=s75c6f2a7210710en_ng&open_type=tanscoded&request_id=news_c36ef10f-de1a-421c-84f7-cd53aab312c2&from=news

Doris Akonanya was involved in an accident when she was 13 years old. The incident was so terrible it damaged one of her legs so badly that amputation was the only resort to try to save her life. Young Doris was going to the market with her elder sister when a motorcycle hit her and broke her leg. At the hospital, she pleaded with the doctors to not cut her broken leg because she desired to have a career in acting and film making. She thought that being an amputee was a disadvantage or a hindrance to living her dreams. Doris's leg was amputated and it left her heartbroken. She sulked for a while until someone told her about Nick Vujicic, the Australian televangelist and motivational speaker, born with no arms and legs. Doris felt motivated after she saw that Nick could swim and do so many other different things despite not having arms and legs. She thought herself special for having two hands and a leg. Therefore, she challenged herself to achieve her own dreams. When Doris gained admission into the university to study Theatre Arts, many of her course mates were surprised. They wondered how someone with one leg could cope, especially because of the fact that the course involved acting and dancing. According to her, some of her course mates advised her to change her course and apply to study Accountancy or related departments that were not as physically demanding. That was not to be because she had been influenced by Genevieve Nnaji and Ini Edo right from childhood, therefore, she was motivated not by what people said but by her belief in working and fighting for her dreams. Since the news about the re-arrest of the self-styled leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu broke, there have been series of fake news flying around. Many of these fake reports have been attributed to popular individuals and/or organisations in the country. Below is a list of these reports which have been found to be fake: 1. Statement Attributed to Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide This report claims that Ohaneze Ndigbo said through a statement that the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government averted a civil war and restored peace in the South East. However, the National Publicity Secretary, Chidozie Alex Ogbonnia has refuted the claim, stating clearly that Ohaneze Ndigbo led by George Obiozor is yet to make a statement concerning the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu; that whatever report that is flying around in the name of the organisation is fake. Ogbonnia warned fabricators of such news to desist from such henceforth or face the music according to the laws of Nigeria. 2. Statement Attributed Asari Dokubo In a certain screenshot flying around on the Internet, Asari Dokubo allegedly mocked Nnamdi Kanu and also threatened to expose his hideout. Investigations into its authenticity showed that it is fake. Asari Dokubo has also declined comments on the matter concerning the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu. 3. Statement Attributed to Rochas Okorocha Former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha has stated that news making waves that he condemned the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu is false. The statement which was allegedly signed by the former governor's aide on media, Sam Onwuemeodo states that "the fight against IPOB/ESN is a fight against the Igbo nation by Buhari's presidency". Speaking with the BBC via a telephone interview, Sam Onwuemeodo said he never published such statement. A former student of University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has shared a portrait he made of the Founder and Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, with push pins. The artist whose name is Godwin Bekee used 15,000 push pins, the type of pins we use on notice boards at offices and schools, for the portrait. According to him, the piece of art took him three weeks to complete. Although an artist and sculptor, one astounding fact to know about Godwin is that he did not study an arts related course at the university. What this entails is that whatever he creates with his hands come naturally and as a result of his passion and resilience.
