Maduka: I am telling them to conduct a fresh Governorship election if they want peace in Anambra State.I think the DSS should invite him to explain what he means by this statement. People shouldn't be making uncouth statements with the type of security situation in the South East. |
The aftermath of the EndSARS protest in Abia State resulted in the burning of public offices and destruction of government owned properties in Aba on 21 October 2020. Days after the destruction and burning of the facilities, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu visited the affected areas and promised to help rebuild the structures. Some of the affected structures include Aba South Local Government Secretariat, Aba High Court, Abia State Fire Service, Aba, Abia State Board of Internal Revenue Service, Aba Zonal Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Aba South Primary Health Care Department, etc. Sadly, one year on, most of the affected government owned buildings in the city remain the same, if not in worst conditions. This is how Aba Town Hall, in Aba South Local Government Area Council secretariat looked before the attack. The above photos are the current state of Aba Town Hall, one year after the destruction and burning of parts of the building. The situation at the facility is worse because most staff members of the Local Government Council no longer have offices where they can carry out their daily duties and responsibilities. If one visited the council on a week day, one would find staff either loitering or standing at corners in the premises due to the inability of the management to provide offices and chairs for the workers. The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has ordered residents of states in the South East to stay at home to protest the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Imo State, on Thursday, 9th September, but the action could be an honour in disguise. President Buhari’s visit to Imo is his first working visit to the state since he assumed office in 2015, and the first time the state will host a sitting President on a working visit since 2009, but the proscribed group wants to sabotage that. The IPOB has continued to show crass recklessness in their bid to make the administration of President Buhari look bad or ungovernable. With the sit-at-home order in protest to the visit of the President, the latest in a series of actions to undermine him. As directed by IPOB, shops, schools, offices, banks, etc. in the entire South East geopolitical zone are expected to remain closed for activities on Thursday, when President Buhari will be in Imo State to commission some projects done by Governor Hope Uzodinma. In the minds of average members of IPOB, the sit-at-home action will register their grievances to President Buhari and/or gravely affect him and the Federal Government of Nigeria. Ironically, it is a great honour for people to decide to stay out of work or business because the President is coming to town. One of the major criticisms President Buhari has faced since coming onboard is that people do not see or hear him talk as often as they wish, which is one of the reasons why the question of whether he is the real Buhari (or Jubrin al-Sudan) gained momentum on social media. It makes sense that after the spate of insecurity with unknown gunmen in Imo State, life came back, such that the President will visit Owerri, the Imo State capital in a season other than electioneering. Therefore, if the people of South East choose to respect, honour, and welcome the President of Nigeria by staying out of work, it is a welcome development. As State Houses of Assembly in the southern part of Nigeria continue to enact laws against open grazing, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called on the Federal Government to put an end to such laws. The Secretary-General of the association, Saleh Alhassan, during a peace summit called on the National Assembly to intervene and stop state governors from establishing laws against open grazing, stating that such laws will undermine the relative peace and stability currently enjoyed in host communities and also threaten social order. He also said that anti open grazing laws will destroy livestock production and send millions of people who depend on livestock value chain into poverty. The Miyetti Allah called anti-open grazing laws "evil and dangerous, corrupt driven, oppressive and satanic agenda, which fundamentally goes against Fulani pastoralist culture and economic interest". It should be noted that cattle herding is a private business and not a federal government venture. What is the mistake Miyetti Allah made? The mistake Miyetti Allah made in their call is to condemn anti-open grazing laws in totality. As a private business venture that needs support, Miyetti Allah should be appealing to state governors to create a grazing route for herders, to enable them sustain their means of livelihood, and also assure governors of measures to solve farmer/herder clashes. When Okezie Ikpeazu assumed office as the Governor of Abia State in 2015, he faced challenges like court cases, insecurity, decayed infrastructure, amongst others, but it is fair to say that he overcame. Nevertheless, he may face some more challenges before his tenure expires in 2023. In Ikpeazu's first year in office, he admitted that kidnapping was the greatest challenge of the state, as it was losing investors due to inadequate security. The other challenge the governor faced was decayed infrastructure. It was as though his administration had been voted in to rescue what was left of the state. It was difficult to find a major road or street that had tar on it. Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state was cut off from neighbouring cities. Trees grew on roads, refuse littered corners of roads yet the governor prevailed. Less than two years to the end of his term, Ikpeazu continues to assure Abians that he will not leave office without writing his name in the annals of history. Beyond challenges the governor has faced and surmounted, there are two more challenges he may face before he leaves office in 2023. How he handles these issues will speak volumes about the type of man he is. 1. Choosing a successor Last week, Ikpeazu said whoever will succeed him will have "to carry their cross". In order words, the person will have to do things on their own, as he will not interfere in the selection process. That was the second time the governor made such statement. However, it is one thing to say something, it is another to actually do it. It would be difficult or almost impossible for the governor to stay out and not interfere throughout the selection process of his successor because at some point, there will be pressure from different quarters. There may be in-fighting where he would be expected to intervene. For instance, the Abia Charter of Equity imbroglio. The Ukwa la Ngwa people say rotation of the governorship seat is between Old Bende and Old Ngwa zones, while many believe that it is between the three Senatorial zones of the state. Ikpeazu himself, a product of the Charter of Equity, cannot turn a blind eye in a situation where his kin want the Ngwa people to retain power, while others from the divide say it should return to Abia North Senatorial district. Ahead of the 2023 governorship tussle in Abia State, many groups have come out to say which zone the next governor of the state should come. This article will focus on reasons why Abia North Senatorial district should produce the next governor of the state. It is customary for the governorship seat to rotate between Senatorial zones in Abia State. The practise began from onset, when the founding fathers of the state agreed that rotation of the governorship seat will engeder peace, justice and harmonious coexistence of all parts of the people of the state. While some groups have asked that the Ukwa/Ngwa bloc retain power beyond 2023, several others, including Abia elders have called on politicians and political parties to respect the agreement and cede governorship slots to Abia North Senatorial district. Beyond what groups have said, let us look at two reasons why Abia North Senatorial district should produce the next governor of the state. 1. Abia Charter of Equity The Abia Charter of Equity means that power rotates amongst the three Senatorial zones of the state. The founding fathers of the state designed this to ensure equity and even development of the state. According to founding fathers of the state, all zones subscribed to the Charter of Equity, and jointly submitted a request and memorandum of understanding to the National Assembly for creation of Abia state from Old Imo state. Since the understanding came into existence, Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia North Senatorial zone (1999 to 2003), Theodore A. Orji of Abia Central (2003 to 2015), and the current governor of the state, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia South have all benefitted. Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu yesterday said that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has changed the narrative of governance of the state especially in the area of infrastructure and entrepreneurship. Kalu made the statement when he spoke to newsmen after the thanksgiving service held on Saturday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Abia North-Central conference (ABNC). He also ensured that even though a greater Abia State has been achieved under the Ikpeazu-led administration, more should be expected before the tenure runs out. Let us take a look at few areas where Abians, including residents and visitors, expected positive change when the governor assumed office. Ariaria International Market, Aba After torrential downpour few days ago, one would wonder how traders and customers at the supposed international market cope. The current state of Ariaria International Market Aba leaves so much to be desired. These photos were taken recently. They show how badly the roads and drainages at the market have collapsed. You would feel sorry for shop owners if you were in the market when it rains. You will see them with buckets scooping rain water out of their shops, to protect their wares. These are taxpayers. These are people who pay for sanitation. These are people who contribute (if not more) to the development of the state yet their places of business are nothing to write about. Aba Town Hall This monumental building sits at the centre of the town, in the premises of Aba South Local Government Area Council Headquarters. With limited routes nowadays, there is no how one can enter or leave Aba without coming across the building. It is the first monumental landmark in the city and is very close to the Aba Main Park. On 21 October 2020, hoodlums hid under the guise of END SARS protest to attack the building, including offices of staff of the Local Government Council. Okezie Ikpeazu visited the premises on 2 November 2020. Sadly, the building has remained the same way almost one year after the governor's visit. On weekdays, you see the Local Government workers walking about because they have no chairs or offices where they can sit to do their jobs. New Government House, Umuahia Abia State Government is yet to move to a permanent house 30 years after creation of the state. Government after another, administrative duties of the governor and his cabinet have continued to be carried out from a rented property. Former governor, Theodore Orji initiated plans to relocate the Government House to a permanent site, and the main building reached advanced stage before he left office in 2015, but the present governor is yet to complete it, six years after he assumed office. However, he promises to finish the new Government House before his tenure expires in 2023.
