Business / Abuja Residents Auction Exotic Cars To Raise Cash by AKAKAK(m): 7:01pm On Jan 11, 2016
The cash crunch in Nigeria, particularly in Abuja, has made many owners of exotics cars to put up some of their vehicles for sale in a bid to raise cash, car dealers in Abuja have said.

According to the dealers, this was despite the fact that the sale of vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory has dropped drastically.

Different dealers who spoke with our correspondent in separate interviews explained that politicians and civil servants were affected by the development.

It was learnt that the aides of many politicians in the city who purchased vehicles and agreed to effect payments based on instalments had not been able to do so, even when dealers forced them to comply.

Ehiremhen Patrick, a car dealer whose business outlet is located close to the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Herbert Macaulay Way, Abuja, stated that the car sales business in the city had slowed down tremendously.

When asked if residents were returning their cars in order to raise cash, he said, “People are returning their vehicles in order to raise funds. It was reported in Saturday PUNCH that some people had started selling their houses and lands to raise funds for the school fees of their wards. It is same for cars, people are looking for money too by offering up their vehicles for sale. But where are the buyers?

“The fact is that there is no money in the country. You can even go to where we sell our cars and you will notice that a lot of vehicles there have remained unsold. I have some cars that have been there for almost six months and nobody is asking how much we are selling. Even when the prices are reduced, nobody is willing to buy.”

Patrick said many potential buyers did not even have the cash to pay.

He added, “In fact, for some, it may take up to a year before they can make complete payment going by what is on ground at present. For instance, in December we didn’t sell anything, our sale was zero, unlike what we recorded in December 2014.

“So sales have dropped drastically in Abuja. You know those who live in Abuja, it is either you are a politician or a civil servant and when civil servants are not paid salaries and all the leakages have been blocked, where then do you expect them to get money? For the politicians, many of them are afraid of even buying luxury cars.”

Patrick went on to state that “Some of their (politicians) aides that bought cars from us are still owing us and despite making it installment payment, many of them still can’t meet up. In fact, there are some payments that were supposed to be completed in December but as I speak to you now they’ve not been able to conclude the payments. Even when you drag them they don’t have the money.”

Another dealer, who’s showroom is located around the Gwarimpa axis of the Kubwa/Zuba expressway in Abuja, Mr. Yahaya Yakubu, said there was “serious cash crunch in Abuja and virtually everyone in this city is lamenting.”

He said, “There is no money and this has contributed to the drastic fall in car sales. It is a serious matter.”

When asked to explain how car sales used to be before the present era of cash crunch, Yakubu said the poor patronage for cars in Abuja started in January 2015 while the country was preparing for the general elections.

He said, “This started towards the preparation for the election. I remember, in December 2014, I sold more than 10 cars. But by January 2015 when we started preparing for elections, people became apprehensive and started to hoard money. When the country started getting close to the election, we (car dealers) started noticing serious drop in patronage.”

Another car dealer at the same Gwarimpa axis, who simply gave his name as Suleiman, said although many residents were putting their vehicles up for sale, there were still few or no buyers.

“Many exotic cars you see here were bought as brand new by their owners, but they can’t continue maintaining them when there is cash crunch. That is why they put them up for sale, but the irony is that there are no buyers because people don’t have money like before,” Suleiman said.

Career / Seven Principles Of An Eagle To Live By In 2016 by AKAKAK(m): 2:07pm On Jan 08, 2016
Thought I should share this to wish us Happy New Year and a great year ahead.
Principles of an eagle to live by in 2016:

(1) Eagles fly alone and at high altitudes. They don't fly with sparrows or other small birds.

Stay away from sparrows and ravens, those that bring you down. Eagles fly with Eagles. Keep good company.

(2) Eagles have an accurate vision. They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5km. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.

Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed.

(3) Eagles do not eat dead things. They feed only on fresh prey.

Do not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

(4) Eagles love the storm. When clouds gather, the eagles get excited. The eagle uses the storm’s wind to lift it higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagles uses the raging storm to lift him above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the leaves and branches of the trees.

Face your challenges knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges rather they relish them and use them profitably.

(5) When a female eagle meets a male and they want to mate, she flies down to earth with the male pursing her and she picks a twig. She flies back into the air with the male pursuing her.
Once she has reached a height high enough for her, she lets the twig fall to the ground and watches it as it falls. The male chases after the twig. The faster it falls, the faster he chases until he reaches it and has to catch it before it falls to the ground, then bring it back to the female eagle.

The female eagle grabs the twig and flies to a much higher altitude, and then drops the twig for the male to chase.
This goes on for hours, with the height increasing until the female eagle is assured that the male eagle has mastered the art of picking the twig which shows commitment, then and only then, will she allow him to mate with her!

Whether in private life or in business, one should test commitment of people intended for partnership.

(6) Eagles prepare for training. They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young get uncomfortable in preparation for flying.

Leave your comfort zone, there is no growth there.

(7) When the Eagle grows old, his feathers become weak and cannot take him as fast as he should. When he feels weak and about to die, he retires to a place far away in the rocks. While there, he plucks out every feather on his body until he is completely bare. He stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, then he can come out.

We occasionally need to shed off old habits, things that burden us, or add no value to our lives.

Health / Breast Sucking Good For You? by AKAKAK(m): 6:18pm On Jan 07, 2016
By Yetunde Arebi
The female breasts, also known as “the twins” or “the girls”, have remained the most conspicuous and attractive feature of the female sexual organ. Perhaps, its strategic positioning and function adds to its importance in the life of a woman.
Besides the age long biological function of the breasts as a source of food and nourishment for babies, the breast is also a major source of sexual attraction for the male specie, just as it is also a key sexual organ for the woman, highly sensitive to stimulation. The fact that they come in various shapes and sizes, further add to their uniqueness and endearing place in our hearts as humans.
As a sexual organ, the breasts have been known to give immense pleasure to both men and women during sexual encounters. In fact, some women have reportedly disclosed that they are capable of achieving orgasm even when thoroughly stimulated through sucking and caressing of the breasts alone. Though, because of this highly sensitive nature, some women find it very uncomfortable or even painful to submit their twin girls to constant sexual manipulation of any kind.
Interestingly, men are constantly drawn to the breasts. A lot of this attraction has been attributed to psychological composition, perception and beliefs. For, pray, why would a full grown man be obsessed with sucking some mounds of milkless breasts? I don’t often get logical answers to this question when I ask. The function of the breasts in sexual behaviour has been attributed to human Face -to -Face copulation that is unusual among other mammals. Since the breast already serves the function of mother-infant bonding, then it is also excellent for male -female bonding, says an argument. After all, it is just within reach.
For those familiar with some of the social media platforms, you would have come across a particular message that has been making the rounds for a couple of years now. Purportedly attributed to the BBC as source, this message usually springs out during the cancer awareness months and in support of cancer prevention campaign. As expected, it elicits a wide range of controversies from both men and women, from humour to disdain and sexual innuendoes, while some others believe the content hook, line and sinker. The purported message is claimed to have been issued by the Ministry of Health in the fight against breast cancer. One of the versions I have received read thus:
Very soon, women will be paying men to have their breasts sucked! According to a report on BBC website, Doctors recommend that women reduce the risk of getting breast cancer by having their breasts sucked thoroughly and vigorously. It is said that regular sucking of the breast lowers the risk level that tends to build up lumps leading to breast cancer. The breast must be sucked as often as possible. Help women fight breast cancer today. Men, please do your part and suck a breast now! And women, please endeavour to make it available regularly…… This message is from the Ministry of Health in the fight against breast cancer.
I have tried several times without success to get a confirmation for this story on the mentioned websites including cancer.org and some others in related fields. But perhaps, someone out there knows the original and authentic source of this message? Please share it with us!
As interesting as this message may be, as well as the different responses it receives anytime it is being passed around, depending on which side of the divide you find yourself, I am more worried about the health implications attached. Cancer is not something to make jokes out of as it claims millions of lives across the world every year. Again, some frightened lady who hitherto was not in favour of breast sucking may easily submit herself to torture with the belief that she is suffering for a good reason. Please, let us not confuse issues. Breast feeding is not the same as breast sucking. Breast feeding is the process of feeding new born and infants with breast milk. It is this that has been medically proven to be of immense benefit to both mother and child and can prevent breast cancer. There are no scientifically proven studies indicating that breast sucking is of any medical benefit to the woman whose breast is being sucked or the person doing the sucking.
However, what has been scientifically proven is the fact that breast sucking when properly performed is of immense pleasure to the woman and may sometime on its own lead to orgasm or when combined with some other forms of sexual stimulation will help a woman to achieve orgasm quicker. Again, neither has any research shown that breast sucking can give a woman cancer.
So ladies, please relax and allow your guys do the job for you. if you are not enjoying the way he is doing it, tell him. I can assure you, it’s a win-win situation.

Sports / African Legends Who Failed To Win The African Footballer Of The Year Award by AKAKAK(m): 4:19pm On Jan 07, 2016
Ahead of the GLO CAF awards tonight at Abuja, lets take a look at the the list of African football legends who failed to win the African Footballer of the Year award.

AUSTINE OKOCHA (Nigeria) - The unluckiest of all having lost narrowly thrice. Jay Jay was top scorer and MVP at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations plus one of the five Africans in the FIFA greatest 100 footballers short list. He was a player of excellent qualities and skills, how he failed to win the African Footballer of the Year award remains a mystery to many football lovers

FINIDI GEORGE (Nigeria) - One of the greatest wingers ever and was so good that Madrid & Barcelona queued for him. The Champions League winner is rated 10th best African player of the last century according to the International Federation of Football History yet did not win the African Player of the Year award and was never nominated

AHMED HASSAN (Egypt) – The four-time Afcon champion remains the world’s most-capped male player ever. His 184 outings for the Pharaohs are unlikely to be bested any time soon.

SEYDOU KEITA (Mali) – He was beaten to the award by Yaya Toure in 2011. Keita picked up three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, three Supercopa de Espana and two Champions League titles with Barcelona

ANTHONY YEBOAH (Ghana) – The legendary Black Stars player bowed to compatriot Abedi Pele twice and came ninth in the 1993 Fifa Ballon d'Or won by Italy’s Roberto Baggio

MOHAMMED ABOUTRIKA (Egypt) – Despite winning a record four African Inter-Club Player of the Year titles, winning the big prize was a wild goose chase for the Egyptian great as he was beaten to the crown by Togolese Adebayor in 2008, his best year.

MICHAEL ESSIEN (Ghana) – Tied with Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure as the African footballer with most consecutive nominations in the award (5), the Champions League winner is one of the most luckless players not to have picked the crown. He finished third on every occasion.

BENNI McCARTHY (South Africa) – One of the few Africans to have won the Champions League, the deadly striker was the most outstanding individual at the 1998 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations where he scooped the top scorer ‘s award. He remains Bafana Bafana’s all time top scorer

SEGUN ODEGBAMI (Nigeria) – ‘Mathematical’, Super Eagles’ second-highest scorer of all time lost at the award twice (1977 & 1980). The veteran was the second player after Laurent Pokou to win back-to-back Afcon top scorer award

ASAMOAH GYAN (Ghana) – Bowed to Samuel Eto’o at the award ceremony in 2010. The skilful forward, who is the youngest player ever to score for the Black Stars, holds the record as the highest scoring African at the Fifa World Cup with six goals. Yet he has not won the African Player of the Year title.

JOSEPH-ANTOINE BELL (Cameroon) - He is recognised by IFFHS as Africa’s greatest goalkeeper of the 20th century and was twice runner-up in the African Footballer of the Year award.

DANIEL AMOKACHI (Nigeria) – Despite being one of Nigeria’s deadliest strikers, he was the first player to score in the Uefa Champions League in its present format. The Bull also came close twice to win the award in 1994 and 1996, where he was beaten to the award by compatriots Emmanuel Amuneke and Nwankwo Kanu respectively.

NOUREDDINE NAYBET (Morocco) – He is one of Africa’s finest defenders ever. Naybet played a record 115 matches for the Atlas Lions, representing the country in two World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

HOSSAM HASSAN (Egypt) - The sublime poacher was a key figure in three of Egypt’s Afcon triumphs in 1986, 1998 and 2006. He remains the Pharaoh’s top scorer of all time with 68 goals in 176 outings but was never considered good enough for the African Player of the Year award.

SAMUEL KUFFOUR (Ghana) – He lost the crown to Kanu Nwankwo (1999) and El Hadji Diouf (2001) following important playing spells at Bayern Munich. In 250 games for Bayern, he won 17 trophies in 12 years and was nominated for the 2001 Ballon d’Or

RIGOBERT SONG (Cameroon) – Song is the only African to have featured in eight Africa Cup of Nations tournament and boasts of the highest consecutive games played at the tourney with 35 first team games where he led the Indomitable Lions to two titles in 2000 and 2002.

LAURENT POKOU (Cote d’Ivoire) – A superb finisher per excellence, he was a striker of many firsts. The first player to score five goals in a game at the Africa Cup of Nations and the first player to win the afcon golden boot back to back. He was nominated for the award twice but didn't win.

Career / 4 Surefire Ways To Win Over The Interviewer by AKAKAK(m): 3:15pm On Jan 06, 2016
Today's workforce is constantly multitasking and overwhelmed by information. Your future interviewer has a thousand things running through his mind as he conducts the interview with you. These circumstances may seem beyond your control, but there are surefire ways to win the interviewer's attention.

Rather than plop yourself in the chair and prepare for the barrage of interview questions, have some of these tricks up your sleeve to entice and engage your next interviewer.

1. Start the interview on friendly terms. Prior to your interview, research your interviewer on LinkedIn, the company's website and online. Look for information on interests, activities, colleges and high school to find something in common. It may be as simple as sharing the same major in college or being a member of the same professional association.

Dig until you find something you can use to start the conversation. Instead of making idle small talk about the weather or how nice the office is, engage the interviewer by showing a genuine interest in him. As Dale Carnegie, author of "How to Win Friends & Influence People," famously said, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."

2. Know how you fit. If you show up and throw up the same canned interview answers, you'll bore the interviewer. Your interviewer is looking for a special candidate who will fit and shine in the role. The interviewer may not be able to define what the quality is, but they often say they know it when they see it.

Do your best to research the company and department by speaking with past or current employees. Ask questions to learn about why people like working there, why employees leave, what current challenges the company faces and what the company's recent successes have been. Search the web, talk with friends and check the company's social media streams for clues that will help you uncover your niche in the department. Use your research to select the most relevant examples of your success. Pick stories that fit with the culture and your potential manager's style.

3. Provide visual proof. If you are seeking a job in a creative field, such as design, marketing or advertising, using visuals is an obvious way to demonstrate your creativity. But many different types of companies look for standout candidates who can demonstrate multifaceted skills and entrepreneurial thinking. Be sure to show your success in industry-neutral terms. In other words, leave out specific product lines or industry jargon that the interviewer may not understand.

For example, instead of saying you've "streamlined a process" or "improved productivity," you could show how you did it. Create a graph or walk the interviewer through the process flowchart you've recreated so that anyone can understand the logic.

Another option is to bring a copy of your infographic resume, which uses images and graphs to underscore important points on your resume, and point out highlights during the interview. Or you could create a presentation of your career highlights for that role with that company. Leave a hard copy with the interviewer. If you've created an online portfolio, be sure to provide the interviewer with printed screenshots and the website address for immediate access and future reference. Practice presenting your visual evidence with different people from different backgrounds to make sure it hits the mark. As a final reminder, it is faster and easier to view pictures than it is to read text. Images evoke emotions and trigger memories. Your visuals could help solidify your qualifications in the interviewer's mind.

4. Close the deal by sharing your plan. During an interview, sales people are often asked to present their goals for the first 30, 60 and 90 days on the job. While you may not be in sales, consider presenting your 30-60-90 day plan during the final interview. Here's a rough outline. The first 30 days usually address how you will learn the company's systems, procedures, people, customers, clients and overall culture. For the first 60 days, outline how you will to begin to use your strengths to fit in the role. Finally, in the 90-day outlook, list some of the actions you will take to help meet goals stated in the job description.

If this sounds difficult, it should. You are showing your exceptional interest in the role. During every interview, you should be asking questions to uncover what your future manager expects. You always want to make sure that you and your future manager are on the same page. Creating this plan requires a thorough understanding of the role, your manager and the company's goals. That's the type of investment many employers are looking for in a job candidate.
Health / 7 Things To Avoid At All Costs If You’re Trying To Slim Down by AKAKAK(m): 12:29pm On Jan 06, 2016
Trying to lose weight but having a tough time? Here are seven common roadblocks that often thwart progress.

1. You’re searching the Web.
It’s sad but true: The World Wide Web is filled with misinformation. Google the words “weight loss” and you’ll get over 220 million results. For reliable weight loss and fitness guidance, rely on credentialed sources like registered dietitians. To find a R.D. in your area, visit www.EatRight.org.

2. You’re skipping meals.
It may seem counterintuitive, but trying to push off meals to “save” calories for later will backfire, leading to overeating later in the day. Stick to a schedule of properly spaced meals and snacks to avoid spiking and crashing energy levels.

3. You’re not cooking enough.
Meals prepared away from home have more sodium, fat and calories than what you can make at home, where you control the ingredients. Start cooking more and your waistline will thank you.

4. You don’t have a plan.
A little preparation will go a long way. Avoid impulse shopping (and impulse takeout orders) by taking the time to prep a simple weekly meal plan and shopping list.

5. You’re forgetting about exercise.
Setting realistic exercise goals (and sticking to them) is just as important as committing to changing your diet. Regular exercise will not only help burn calories but also promote increased lean body mass, which will also benefit your metabolism.

6. You’re still thinking less is more.
Not eating enough can sabotage successful weight loss. Serial dieters still want to revert back to slashing calories to shed pounds. The problem is that cutting back on energy (aka calories) dramatically will only bring metabolism to a screeching halt. The NIH defines too few calories as fewer than 1,200 calories per day.

7. You’re being too hard on yourself.
Sometimes the best way to stay on track is to deviate from your plan. Trying to completely avoid higher-calorie foods that you love can leave you bitter and frustrated — there’s nothing healthy about that! Allow yourself the occasional indulgence so that you maintain a healthy relationship with food.

Education / Scientists Discover Four New Elements by AKAKAK(m): 6:54pm On Jan 04, 2016
Zovoe Jonathan/Simon Ejembi/Ayodele Oluwagbemi

Four elements are soon to be added to the periodic table, finally completing the seventh row making every science textbook out of date according to education giant Pearson, the CNBC has reported.

A spokesman for Pearson said, “We regularly review our course materials and textbooks to ensure they are up to date, and any changes that need to be made will be done at the appropriate moment to ensure least disruption to schools and students.”

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry on December 30, verified the addition of the elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 to the table’s seventh row making it complete.

This marks the first time new atoms have been added to the periodic table since 2011, according to the report.

Professor Jan Reedijk, President of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC said the chemistry community is eager to see its most cherished table finally being completed down to the seventh row.

“The chemistry community is eager to see its most cherished table finally being completed down to the seventh row.

“IUPAC has now initiated the process of formalizing names and symbols for these elements temporarily named as ununtrium, (Uut or element 113), ununpentium (Uup, element 115), ununseptium (Uus, element 117), and ununoctium (Uuo, element 118),” he said in a statement.

The proposed names and symbols will be checked by the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC for consistency, translatability into other languages, possible prior historic use for other cases, etc.

New elements can be named after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property or a scientist.

After Divisional acceptance, the names and two-letter symbols will be presented for public review for five months, before the highest body of IUPAC, the Council, will make a final decision on the names of these new chemical elements and their two-letter symbols and their introduction into the Periodic Table of the Elements.

The statement released by IUPAC also quoted the President, Dr. Mark C. Cesa, as saying, “As the global organization that provides objective scientific expertise and develops the essential tools for the application and communication of chemical knowledge for the benefit of humankind, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is pleased and honored to make this announcement concerning elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 and the completion of the seventh row of the periodic table of the elements.

“we are excited about these new elements, and we thank the dedicated scientists who discovered them for their painstaking work, as well the members of the IUPAC/IUPAP Joint Working Party for completing their essential and critically important task,” he added.

Health / Physician Says Oranges Offer Protection Against Cardiovascular Diseases by AKAKAK(m): 6:04pm On Jan 04, 2016
An Ear, Nose and Throat physician, Dr. Ayotunde Fasunla, says frequent consumption of oranges offers protection against cardiovascular diseases.
Fasunla, of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Ibadan.
He said oranges, which are generally available throughout the year, have enormous health and nutritional values.
He said: “Oranges offer protection against cardiovascular diseases.
“The herperidin, a flavour in oranges, has been shown to lower high blood pressure.
“The folate content is necessary for lowering levels of homocysteine, a potent cardiovascular risk factor.
“The potassium content in orange helps to lower blood pressure, thereby, protecting against stroke and cardiac arrhythmias.”
The ENT doctor also said the Vitamin C content of the orange also offered protection against Colon cancer.
Fasunla said: “Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body that disarms free radicals and prevents them from damaging cells.
“This is why a good intake of orange juice is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.
“Orange is a strong anti-inflammatory agent that prevents free radical damage that triggers conditions like asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.”
Fasunla also said drinking a glass of orange juice daily would help to improve wound healing, boost the immune system and protect the body against chronic diseases.
He said there were many benefits of eating an orange a day, urging people to also eat the inner white pulp of the fruit.
He said: “The wound healing properties of oranges have been associated with a wide variety of photonutrient compounds.
“However, most of these are found in the peel and the inner white pulp of the orange.
“Unfortunately, the inner white pulp is not eaten by majority due to lack of knowledge

Health / Poor Sanitation Conditions In Nigeria Claims The Life Of 800 Children Daily by AKAKAK(m): 5:20pm On Dec 21, 2015
If you are a parent then it’s time for you to wake up. According to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), at least 800 children die in Nigeria everyday owing to poor sanitation conditions and inadequate water and about 1,400 deaths occur daily in Nigeria due diarrhoea.
Read: Health foundation, clubs, seek public support for patients
In a statement signed by the Chief of Communication of UNICEF, Doune Porter, children in the first few months of their lives are exposed to numerous vulnerable and water borne diseases which are transmitted to their body through unwashed hands. UNICEF also stated that, ‘Over 800 of the approximately 1400 children die due to diarrhoea each day which can be attributed to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene. Infants in their first months of life are more prone to diseases transmitted as a result of unwashed hands’

Children exposed to poor sanitation condition (today.ng)

According to government sources, the Federal Government loses N455 billion annually due to poor sanitation which is equivalent to 1.3 percent of Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP). Rabi Jimeta, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources disclosed this fact last month at a national stakeholder’s consultative workshop on draft hygiene promotion strategy and implementation guidelines for Nigeria in Abuja.
According to UNICEF, an average of 82 per cent of people wash their hands before eating but only 53 per cent of people wash their hands after defecation. Another serious public health issue is that only 14 per cent people wash their hands with soap after cleaning a child’s faeces. Regular washing hands with soap before eating, handling food, after using the toilet, cleaning nappies etc. save more lives in reality than taking vaccinations and medications.
According to UNICEF, regular washing of hands with soap can reduce deaths from diarrhoea by almost half and deaths from acute respiratory infections by one-quarter. It is also an important line of defence against the spread of Ebola in Nigeria which needed to be sustained to prevent other communicable diseases.

Education / SSANU Plans Indefinite Strike As FG Sacks 2000 Workers by AKAKAK(m): 4:54pm On Dec 21, 2015
Fidelis Soriwei and Friday Olokor, Abuja

The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities has called for an indefinite strike on December 24, 2015 to protest a recent decision of the Federal Government to sack 2,000 university workers across the country by January, 2016.

The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the National Universities Commission had written letters of termination to 2,000 members of staff of the universities.

Ugwoke said that the senior staff union of the universities had already dispatched letters to the Ministry of Education, the NUC and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to withdraw the letters of termination issued to varsity workers of the University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and others.

He said that SSANU also urged the Education Ministry and the other agencies to ensure immediate withdrawal of similar letters to vice chancellors to terminate the appointment of personnel of university staff primary schools.

He said the letter dated December 17, 2015 also copied President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Senate, Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and others.

Ugwoke added that the 2,000 workers affected in the planned retrenchment exercise were drawn from 31 universities and were employed by the councils of the various institutions to make the requisite contribution to educational development in the institutions and the society over the years.

The SSANU leader noted that the directive to sack the workers who are expected to leave service in January 2016 was contained in a circular said to have been written and signed by a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education, Mr. E.O Fayemi, on behalf of the minister.

He stated further that the circular dated April 21, 2015, was attached with a memorandum and report from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission dated March 2014 and February 2014 respectively.

According to him, the commission responded to the circular by directing the removal of personnel of staff schools and other institutions affiliated to the universities from the payroll.

He said, “The implementation of this directive would be a gross violation and breach of the SSANU/FGN 2009 Agreement, which explicitly stated that the University shall bear full capital and recurrent cost of University Staff primary schools.

“It is further shocking to note that till date, the Federal Ministry of Defence still funds the capital and recurrent costs of over 100 Army Children Schools, Command Children Schools, Navy Primary Schools and Air Force Schools; while the Ministry of Police Affairs still funds its Police Children Schools, all from the Federal Treasury.

“We are surprised that an agency of government, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, could continue with this callous, wicked, insensitive and ill-intentioned agenda, despite our calls, letters, press releases and publications on the issue.

“With the advent of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, we had written series of public and confidential letters on same with no positive response.”

He said that 90 per cent of the pupils of the university staff schools were children of the staff of the institutions stressing that the schools were established alongside other academic components of the universities in some cases.

The unionist said SSANU had to give the December 24, 2015 deadline to the Federal Government as part of the efforts to prevent the over 2000 workers of the universities from being sacked.

Several efforts by Saturday PUNCH to get the response of ASUU National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, was resisted because he said, “I am out of the country and you don’t expect me to answer you from abroad.”

Also when contacted, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Akuneme, directed our correspondent to the office of the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu.

But several calls and SMS to the Assistant Director of Press in the Education Ministry, Abdul Onu, were not replied.

N8 Billion Has Been Refunded To Government Treasury – Melaye
Channels Television.
Updated December 16, 2015

A Member of the Nigerian Senate has said that about N8 billion has been refunded back to the treasury of government and more monies will be refunded.
“As I speak to you, about eight billion Naira has been refunded back to the treasury of government and I know more monies will be refunded”, he said.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Senator Dino Melaye said that ” basically, I want to say that when I raised this motion on the floor of the Senate, I got a lot of insults on social media, everywhere, that I was blabbing and there was no truth in the content of my presentation.
“But I tweeted that the truth has no colour and every lie has an expiry date.
“I want to thank God that I have been vindicated by the public hearing where my revelations on the floor of the Senate have given room for confession even by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele”, he said.
While answering a question on how he got an insight on the alleged illegality and exorbitant commission charged for the deployment of Remita, the Senator said that “I will want to say that the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is a very laudable program which is going to help blocking leakages and I support it.
“My prayer on the day I moved the motion was to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for an implementation of the TSA, but I was challenging that the instrumentality of the TSA is being used by some individuals to undercut Nigerians and our national patrimony”, he claimed.
Senator Melaye had argued that the use of Remita was a violation of Section 162(1) of the constitution, which stated that “the federation shall maintain a special account to be called the federation account into which all revenues collected by the government of the federation except the proceeds from the personal income tax of the personnel of the Armed Forces of the Federation, the Nigeria Police Force, the ministry or department of government charged with foreign affairs and the residents of the FCT, Abuja”.
He further stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) could only appoint a registered bank as an agent for collecting and disbursing the funds.
The Senator said that since Remita was not a bank, its appointment as a collection agent was in violation of the CBN Act and the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2007.
Giving his view on the amount he would recommend for private bodies for doing government jobs, Senator Melaye said that “the Senate is

Health / The 4 Foods That Will Steady Your Blood Sugar by AKAKAK(m): 11:03am On Dec 14, 2015
The 4 Foods That Will Steady Your Blood Sugar
Lower your diabetes risk—and prevent an energy crash—by eating these foods daily.

Wondering what blood sugar has to do with you, if you don't have diabetes? Keeping your blood sugar levels as steady as possible now may help you avoid getting diabetes later. "As you get older, your risk for type 2 diabetes goes up," says Alissa Rumsey, Registered Dietitian and Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "Since you can’t modify your age, it is important to take other steps to lower your risk, including maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough exercise, and balancing your diet to prevent spikes in blood sugar."
Controlling your blood sugar will also just make you feel better. "It's best to control blood sugar—it keeps your energy stable," says Leann Olansky, M.D., an endocrinologist at the Cleveland Clinic. "If your blood sugar doesn't vary that much before and after a meal, that's a healthier way to be."

How High Blood Sugar Affects Your Body
Unrelated to diabetes, symptoms of occasional high blood sugar aren't life-threatening, but rather unpleasant and only potentially dangerous if you suffer from other health problems. "When your blood sugar is too high, it can make you feel sluggish," says Dr. Olansky. "When it's higher still, it can lead to dehydration and make your blood pressure unstable, and cause you to urinate more often, especially at night."
But when your blood sugar remains chronically high, insulin, a hormone that's supposed to help your body store sugar as energy, stops working as it should. "Prolonged high blood sugar levels can lead to insulin resistance, meaning your body isn’t able to use insulin properly," says Rumsey. "Over time this insulin resistance can develop into diabetes, when insulin isn’t able to keep your blood sugar within normal levels."
Blood Sugar and Belly Fat
Current research reveals an association between spikes in blood sugar and weight gain. Rumsey asserts that the blood sugar-belly fat connection is related to insulin. "When our blood sugar rises, insulin is released to help get that sugar out of our bloodstream and into the rest of our body," she says. "The higher your blood sugar goes, the more insulin is released. Insulin likes to store excess blood sugar as fat, particularly belly fat."
Dr. Olansky believes the calories from carbohydrates may be mostly to blame for increased belly fat. "It may be that the carbohydrates, themselves, lead to belly fat, but that's difficult to be sure of," she says. "We do know that eating low-carb leads to less weight gain. We also know that eating simple sugars that are rapidly absorbed often causes you to be more hungry shortly after, and those extra calories you consume can lead to belly fat."
Regulator #1: Fiber-Rich Foods
• Beans & Legumes
• Whole Grains
• Nuts & Seeds
One of the keys to controlling your blood sugar is prolonging the digestive process of each meal you eat. Highly processed foods, like a fast-food burger or a fruity pastry, speed through your system, causing your blood sugar to rise—and then fall—rapidly. On the other hand, "fiber helps to slow down digestion, so sugar is released more slowly into the blood and you don’t get as big of a blood sugar spike," says Rumsey, who suggests whole grains like quinoa, farro, barley, and oatmeal for the best health results.
Nuts and seeds, like walnuts, almonds, and chia or flax seeds, have even more blood sugar-regulating nutrients going for them, since their protein and healthy fat further help slow down digestion.

Regulator #2: Tart Cherries
People who have trouble sleeping may already be touting the virtues of tart cherries—studies have shown that drinking tart cherry juice improves sleep quality in older adults with insomnia. But people with diabetes will love this jewel-toned stone fruit for another reason: In a 2007 study, rats with a predisposition toward high cholesterol and pre-diabetes who ate tart cherries had "lower total cholesterol, lower blood sugar, less fat storage in the liver, lower oxidative stress, and increased production of a molecule that helps the body handle fat and sugar," according to an article from the University of Michigan, where the study was conducted.
"Tart cherries are full of anthocyanins," says Rumsey. "Some studies have shown a link between diets high in anthocyanins and improved insulin response. This means that your body is able to lower blood sugar more quickly after a meal.
Regulator #3: Cinnamon
It's time to bring cinnamon out of kitchen-pantry obscurity. In a 2013meta-analysis of 10 randomized, controlled trials, daily consumption of cinnamon was linked to lower fasting blood glucose, as well as, lower total cholesterol and bad cholesterol, and higher good cholesterol, in people with type 2 diabetes. Whether cinnamon has a lasting effect on blood sugar remains to be seen. "More research needs to be done," says Rumsey. "It isn’t a magic bullet, but sprinkling cinnamon on your morning oatmeal or cereal certainly won’t hurt."

Regulator #4: Leafy Greens & Vegetables
It's not a news flash that you should be eating salad for better health. But leafy greens and other non-starchy vegetables are especially important for people with blood sugar concerns. "They're high in fiber and low in carbohydrates, making them a perfect food to help control blood sugar levels," says Rumsey.
Dr. Olansky points out another probable blood-sugar benefit of eating vegetables. While processed foods get digested in the upper intestines, raw and lightly cooked vegetables tend to make it to the lower intestines where they stimulate the production of hormones called incretines, she says. "Incretines help your metabolism, and in long run can reduce risk of developing diabetes. That's a theory, though it's not proven."

3 Worst Foods for Blood Sugar Control
Foods that your body quickly converts to sugar—or foods high in sugar without other digestion-slowing nutrients—are no-nos, says Rumsey:
1) Refined carbohydrates. Avoid bagels, pastries, white bread, white pasta, crackers, and cookies. "Refined carbs are ones that have been heavily processed, and the end result has little fiber," says Rumsey. "Once eaten, they are converted to sugar very quickly, which causes a rapid rise in blood sugar."
2) Sugar-sweetened beverages. Instead of soda, sweetened iced tea drinks, juices, and sports drinks, stick to water and other unsweetened beverages. Many sweetened drinks have 8-10 teaspoons of sugar of added sugar in just one bottle, which exceeds the daily recommended limit of 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men, says Rumsey. "There is no fiber to slow digestion, so this sugar is digested fast and causes a big spike in blood sugar."
3) Processed foods with added sugar. The biggest culprits: granola bars, fruit-flavored yogurts, candy, and desserts. Rumsey cautions you to examine nutrition labels carefully. "Food manufacturers can use as many as 6 or 7 different types of sugar in one product," she says.

Romance / The 50 Things Every Woman Needs To Know About Sex by AKAKAK(m): 7:19pm On Dec 09, 2015
Found this interesting article on UK Daily Mail written by Sexpert Tracey Cox, who revealed the 50 things females need to know in bed. Read below and share your thoughts...

1. You’ll have your first orgasm by yourself. Few of us are lucky enough to start our sexual lives with a lover who’s so patient and skilled he can teach us about our own body.
2. Enthusiasm and being willing to try (almost) everything once is what makes you sexy. Looks, breasts, legs up to your armpits – they’ll only take you so far.
3. A vibrator is the quickest, easiest, most effective way to stimulate the clitoris, which is how most women have an orgasm.

4. You won’t become ‘addicted’ to your vibrator.
Using it often won’t put you off having the ‘real thing’ - quite the opposite!
Women who regularly use intimacy gadgets have higher libidos, orgasm easily and report less sexual dysfunction. About the only ‘bad’ thing that can happen is feeling a bit numb from having it up too high. Panic not - It’s temporary.
5. Only 20 per cent of women can orgasm purely from intercourse.
His ex-girlfriend who used to climax every time, effortlessly, within minutes of him penetrating, was lying.
6. If he can’t kiss, he’ll be useless in bed.
Especially true of men who stick a stiff tongue down your throat the second you lock lips.
7. The male sexual system is join-the-dots stuff. The female sexual system is complicated and not terribly well thought through.
Who thought putting the clitoris outside the vagina would be a good idea?
8. Anyone can be good in bed. But you do need a good working knowledge of your subject, experience and be willing to take and give feedback.
9. It’s obvious if you don’t like sex. All the tips and tricks in the world can’t teach you how to fake I’ll-die-if-I-don’t-have-you-now desire
10. The chances of you both climaxing together is extremely unlikely. So let’s all stop pretending and stop faking just because that’s what couples do on telly and in the movies.
11. If you fancy a party, do it with someone you’re not in love with. It goes a lot smoother in your head than in your bed and not much fun if you’re a frothing mess of jealousy and insecure paranoia throughout.
12. You’ll have a much better sex life if you match up with someone who has the same libido. Everyone’s sex drive spikes at the start but about eight months in, you’ll get a good idea of how much sex you both naturally crave. Mismatched sex drives are the main reason couples fight about sex. If you can possibly manage it, stick with your tribe.

13. No one is born a brilliant lover. Sex skills can be taught and brushing up on the basics, just to check you’re on the right track, is something everyone should do. We can all improve.
14. It doesn’t mean you’re boring in bed if he wants to try something new. Let go of the concept that ‘you should be enough’.
It’s hard enough making love happily to the same person for the rest of your life. If you don’t have variety, you’ve lost the game before it’s even started.
15. Men are visual. They like looking at sexy things. This is the main reason why men watch porn.
It’s usually that innocent.
16. Both men and women like pre-intimacy. Quickies are great now and then but dreary and unsatisfying if that’s all you’re offered.
17. Don’t confuse love and lust. You spend a tiny proportion of your lives having sex.
It helps if you quite like hanging out together the rest of the time.
18. Men generally like to be touched twice as hard as women do. Their skin is thicker. This doesn’t mean you should be rough though.
19. Giving MouthAction without using your hands is about as effective as bobbing for apples in a bucket of water with your hands behind your back.
21. The more different ways you can orgasm, the more orgasms you’ll have. This means forcing yourself to try a new way to climax if you can only do it one way.
22. The first time you have sex shapes you forever.
If losing your virginity was a positive experience, you’re more likely to view sex as something that’s healthy and enjoyable and lovers as nice people who can be trusted.
If your first time still haunts you years later, consider working it through with a good sex therapist.
23. Men aren’t just out for sex. But it’s easy to spot the ones who are. They won’t hang around past date three if you don’t put out.
24. There is such a thing as bad MouthAction. And not all men adore MouthAction.
25. Erections come and go during sex. It doesn’t mean he’s not enjoying it, it means he was focusing on you and not receiving any physical stimulation.
26. It’s often easier to orgasm solo than it is with a partner, especially when it’s with someone new.
27. The most likely time you’ll fake it is at the start. You don’t want to seem anything less than perfect. It’s later on, when you start teaching each other what really does it for you, that you’ll have your first real orgasm.
28. All men watch porn. But that’s OK because lots of women do too. Don’t read too much into it.
29. Stop worrying about your weight.
Men are far more forgiving of your wobbly bits than you are. He’s not looking at your thighs and thinking ‘Ew! Porridge’, he’s thinking, 'Let me get my hands on those'. Sexy is a state of mind, not a body size.
30. All sex positions are a variant of the basic five: him on top, her on top, side-by-side, from behind and standing.
31. If you never initiate sex, your partner will feel like you only have sex to please them. Besides, initiating sex makes you feel powerful which is an aphrodisiac.
32. Women feel like sex a lot at certain times of the month and are repulsed by the idea at others. This is normal. The female libido fluctuates wildly during the monthly cycle.
Let your partner know this information so they don’t take it personally – and where you’re at right now.
33. Real men don’t always get erections. Stress, age, alcohol and lots of medication all affect them.
You don’t need an erect penis to have a good time in bed. Most women have their best, most intense orgasms through MouthAction.
34. Genitals come in all different shapes and sizes. Don’t compare yours to the porn stars: they’ve all been ‘tidied up’, bleached and waxed.
35. If you’re thinking of getting a ‘designer vagina’, you are barking mad. Vaginal tightening after a particularly horrible birth is one thing but opting for a ‘labial face-lift’ is as risky as the above-the-belt version.
Except worse because there’s a risk of permanent loss of sensation if too much skin is removed or ultra-sensitivity if a nerve is exposed.
This effectively means your ability to orgasm is compromised - or removed. You look fine as you are. Really.
36. Having sex purely to get the cuddle at the end isn’t healthy. If that’s what you’re really after, go see a friend or your Mum instead of a lover. Better still, get a dog.
37. Some men ask for sex when what they really want is love.
Women aren’t the only ones who use sex to get affection. Having sex is a sneaky, ‘manly’ way of getting close to you.
38. Sex long-term is very different than sex short term. It doesn’t mean you don’t fancy your partner because you’re not spontaneously gagging for it every day, six years in.
39. He’s not a mind reader. No-one knows what it is you feel like, at any given moment, other than you.
40. Mouths are good for lots of things but telling your partner what you like and don’t like is the most important use of all.
41. Refuse to feel guilty about your fantasies. What you get up to in your imagination is your business.
42. Sex is smelly, noisy, sweaty and unflattering. Leave your ego at the door and replace it with your sense of humour. If you haven’t broken wind at the worst possible moment, you’re probably playing it too safe.
43. The more you have sex, the more you want sex. Stop having it and you’ll forget how good it feels.
44. Think before you share your sexual fantasies. Make it clear what you’re doing it or you may come home to a ‘surprise’ you definitely didn’t expect.
45. It’s OK to stop having sex from time to time.
Sometimes life is too stressful (work worries, death of a parent) or children too demanding. Taking a sex break takes the pressure off and stops either of you freaking out because you know it’s not permanent.
46. Kids kill your sex life. But you can wrestle it back again once they’re hit age two.
47. If you can talk though your sex problems you can nearly always solve them.
48. Don’t try to put yourself in a box. Women are far more erotically plastic than men and much more likely to be aroused by the person, rather than their gender.
49. If you’re feeling bad after sex you’re sleeping with the wrong person.
50.Sex is about give and take. You don’t have to reciprocate in the same session but if you’re constantly lying back and taking, you’re a selfish lover. Not sexy. Not lovable.
Career / Customized For Purpose. by AKAKAK(m): 3:49pm On Nov 22, 2015
Do you know God has customised you to achieve
amazing things?
Lionel Messi was born on 24th June 1987, in Rosario,
Argentina to a father who was a factory worker, and a
mother who was a cleaner. When he was 11 years old,
Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency
(GHD), a condition that made him short and needed a
treatment but it was too expensive for his poor parents
to afford. He began playing from an early age but he
was too short. While his parents were searching for
treatment for him, Coach Carles Rexach of FC
Barcelona was impressed with Messi at a trial and
offered him a contract that was written on tissue
paper! FC Barcelona paid for Messi's treatment in
Spain when he joined the prestigious FC Barcelona
youth academy.
Lionel Messi is the most exciting footballer to walk the
face of the earth. The condition that prevented him
from growing tall has become such a great asset. His
shortness has given him the amazing stability that
brings exception control in motion. Messi is the only
player to win four consecutive FIFA Baloon d'Or and he
is FC Barcelona’s. River Plate FC in Argentina wanted
to offer him a place in their academy but were
unwilling to pay for the cost of his treatment. If Messi
had been tall, he would be playing for River Plate and
not Barca. It would have taken him long, to reach
where he is and he would not have achieved so much
so soon. When I watch him play, I wonder what else he
would be good at apart from football.
Paul says, “…we have obtained an inheritance, being
predestinated according to the purpose of him who
works all things after the counsel of his own
will” (Ephesians 1:11) When God creates a person for
purpose, he considers all the demands of the
assignment and determines the best assets, facilities
and genetic blue print that best matches the demands
of the assignment. For Messi to accomplish his
purpose, he needed to be short. Being short made him
stable and quick. His fast twitch muscles required a
limited height to bloom. What have you been
predestined to accomplish for the glory of your Father
in Heaven? I do not know what limitations you have in
your life but if you feel God has opened a door for you,
then pray for Him to show you how you can enter that
door and rule your realm.

Politics / MUST WATCH It Would Be A Mistake To Provoke Another Biafran War - Ojukwu . by AKAKAK(m): 9:55am On Nov 17, 2015
If you are one of those clamouring for Biafra you may want to watch this less than I minute Instructive video interview granted by no other person than the late Igbo Leader Chief Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu's where he categorically stated that it would be a mistake for anyone to Provoke another Biafran War.

In the tone of the bible a house divided against itself can not stand and the age long adage, united we stand, divided we fall.

Let's us all resolve to be one despite differences.

Remember no one can know it better than than the creator and if chief Ojukwu (the "creator" of the first Biafra) can advise that it would be a mistake for anyone to Provoke another Biafran War. Then we should all listen to him because he saw it all and knew all the consequences.

Education / Nigerian Professor Actually Solves 150 Year Old Maths Problem BBC World Service by AKAKAK(m): 8:50am On Nov 17, 2015
A Nigerian professor has Actually solved 150 year old maths problem (Riemann Hypothesis) for those still in doubt, attached is the link to BBC world service page showing the news. Recall that two local newspaper (Vanguard and thisday) made the broadcast earlier.

For the sake of emphasis BBC means British Broadcasting Corporation and is fully owned by the British government. BBC is one of the most reputable media outfits in the world, and because of its commitment to highest level if ethical standard, it only broadcast only news that have been confirmed to be true. In essence if you see a news in BBC you can take it to the bank.

Let's not be always fast to pull down our own because of tribal sentiments, after all, we are all first Nigerians before any other tribe. Remember in football when Ahmed Musa,Emmanuel Emenike,Sunday Mba, Obafemi Martins, Gbolahan Salami, Odion Ighalo or Mikel Obi scores we all rejoice without remembering where is from. The important thing to us is that Nigeria wins. Lets imbibe this attitude to every thing we do.

Finally lets celebrate a Nigerian for solving 150 year old maths problem (Riemann Hypothesis)

The OP is correct I am married to a medical doctor and have never regretted that decision. My candid advise to folks that are not married, if you can marry a doctor.

Politics / Re: Pipeline Vandals Kill 10 DSS Operatives In Ogun by AKAKAK(m): 8:33am On Sep 17, 2015
I just wonder how a lot people in Nigeria reason, I find it really hard how some people want a country like Nigeria that has Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, DSS, Civil defence, Customs etc and you want govt to award contracts for security of oil installations to non government informal sector that can only happen in Nigeria. In addition as a person familair with that area, oil bunkering became worse when OPC was guiding the place because they themselves were the ones vandalising the pipelines. Until Nigerians change their reasoning and support the right thing irrespective of the tribe of the leader then we have a very long way to go.
