At least seven foreign players for
two top Ukrainian football teams have
refused to return to the country as
tensions mount after the Malaysia Airlines
crash, media reported Sunday.
Six players for champions Shakhtar
Donetsk players and an Argentine with
Metalist Kharkiv are too worried for their
safety, the reports said.
The six Donetsk players refused to fly back
to Ukraine after their side were beaten 4-1
by Lyon in a friendly Saturday in the
French town of Annecy, ITAR-TASS news
agency said.
It named five of the players as Brazilians
Alex Teixeira, Fred, Douglas Costa, Dentinho
and Argentine Facundo Ferreyra.
“I don’t want to give any comments for
the moment,” Shakhtar general manager
Sergei Palkin was quoted as saying by
Tribuna information site.
Meanwhile, Metalist Kharkiv’s Argentine
midfielder Sebastian Blanco refused to
return to Ukraine from a training camp in
Austria, the R-Sport agency reported.
“After the Malaysian plane’s crash I have
no intention to return to Ukraine,” the 26-
year-old footballer was quoted as saying.
“The situation there is currently abnormal. I
decided to stay in Buenos Aires.”
Ukrainian Football Federation (FFU) is
maintaining the start of the national
championship for July 25 despite the
troubles in the east of the country
heightened by the apparent shooting down
of the Malaysian Airlines jet on Thursday.
“The entire country mourns over the
tragedy that happened. It’s terrible,” an
FFU spokesman Pavel Ternovoi said. “But it
will not influence the national
championship kick off. We insist that
football should stay out of politics.

Losing a smartphone is one of the worst
nightmares that can happen to you,
especially if the device is one of the high-
end handsets that cost you a fortune.
Recently, a friend came to me looking
utterly distraught. “My phone is gone!” he
declared. I could see tears rolling down
from his eyes. His sadness and worries
were clearly visible and palpable.
The phone that he had lost was an
expensive Android phone he had bought
about two weeks earlier. With the
technology offered in the latest
smartphones, he had his entire business
and personal life uploaded to that phone.
His emails, photos (some of which were
pretty sensitive) and contacts were all
there. This is not to mention how easily
one could get into his social media
accounts, as well as online and mobile
banking accounts through the phone.
My friend obviously had a million reasons
in this world to feel like a chicken with its
head cut off. He had gone to the bank and
placed the phone on a bench as he was
filling out some forms.
A couple of minutes after leaving the
banking hall, he remembered that he no
longer had possession of his phone. He
rushed back to the bank, but his frantic
search for the phone was not successful.
The staff at the bank even went over the
CCTV footage but owing to the large
amount of human traffic in the banking
hall, nothing conclusive was found.
My friend had an Android Device Manager
in his phone. Android Device Manager has
some remote phone tracking capabilities.
My friend had already tried to call his
phone number, but there was no response.
This could have been coincidental because
the phone’s battery was already dying at
the time he was at the bank, however, it
could probably be that whoever had picked
it had already removed and most likely
replaced the SIM.
Since the phone was synced to his online
Google credentials, Android Device
Manager would help to locate the phone
when the phone was connected to the
internet through mobile or Wi-Fi. It is also
possible to lock or wipe my friend’s
credentials remotely using Android Device
Manager.
We, therefore, used my friend’s details to
log into Android Device Manager Web
portal. Unfortunately, we could not trace
the phone. This could have resulted from
the person resetting it to factory settings. If
this had happened, then we would have
better luck finding a pin in a haystack
than tracing the phone!
Nonetheless, we used Android Manager to
set a message on the phone’s lock screen.
The message was simple “if you find this
phone; please contact me on XX-Bleep-
XXXX a cash reward of ….. Naira will be
given.” We even changed the phone name
to read the same message.
If we did not get a reply in the next few
days, we would have to remotely wipe the
data on the phone, block the phone and
deactivate the SIM.
My friend, on the other hand, had already
given up and was planning on saving up
for a new phone. Nonetheless, two hours
later, the kind stranger who had picked the
phone called. We planned a meeting where
he obtained his reward, and we received
the phone.
There are a few lessons that we can pick
up from this experience.
In case you lose your phone:
• Do not panic; calmly retrace your steps
to where you last remember having the
phone. Try calling your phone and ask
around if anyone has seen it.
• Ensure that the phone is locked; this is
a precaution that you ought to take before
you lose the phone. Locking your phone
with a PIN or password will keep the
personal details safe in the event of your
phone disappearing.
• Install a tracker app in your phone;
having Android Device Manager or Find My
iPhone may not be adequate. There are
several third party apps that are excellent
phone trackers. Such apps will be of great
help in finding your phone. Use the phone
tracker software to find your phone.
• Leave a message on the phone; the
phone tracing app should easily help you
put a message on the phone’s lock-
screen. Let anyone who finds the phone
know how he or she can reach you. The
message had better be simple and
straightforward. Incentives such as cash
can be promised for returning the phone.
• Do not judge; it would be wrong to
assume that whoever has your phone stole
it. It could be that the individual picked it
up with no bad intention. Your interactions
with the finder should, therefore, be
positive.
• Contact your mobile provider; this is
especially important if you are on a post-
paid talk-time plan. Calling the mobile
provider will not only deactivate the SIM
but will also help you block the phone.
• Finally, when meeting the person who
finds your phone; be cautious. Meet in a
public place and have a friend or two to
accompany you.
Someone reading this might be asking; is
this possible in Nigeria? I’d say yes
because aside my friend, someone has
actually returned my phone that dropped
while stepping out of the car and after we
met and he is back, I gave him a cash
reward.

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of
Universities, University of Abuja branch, Mr
Ben Ugheoke, on Tuesday in Abuja said
the body has suspended the strike by its
members.
Ugheoke told the News Agency of Nigeria
in a telephone interview that the decision
was taken on Monday during a congress
held at the institution’s mini-campus.
He said, “We resolved at the congress to
suspend the strike after signing an
agreement with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof.
Micheal Adikwu.
“The announcement on this will be done
Tuesday morning.”
The ASUU branch embarked on the strike
on June 2, following what it called “Federal
Government’s refusal to release the White
Paper containing issues affecting the
institution”.
The Federal Government had on July 16,
2012 constituted a Visitation Panel to
resolve issues affecting the institution but
the White Paper of the report was yet to
be released.
Ugheoke said the signed agreement
involved the release of the White Paper,
and that the Vice-Chancellor has assured
the union that he would work towards
ensuring its release.
He, however, said the recall of students to
the campus was a decision to be made by
the University Senate.

Sixty-seven live giant African snails
have been seized by US customs
agents.
The snails, which are prohibited in the US,
were found by Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) inspectors at Los Angeles
International Airport.
They arrived from Nigeria and were
intended for a person in California, said
Lee Harty, a spokeswoman for the
customs agency.
The molluscs are among the largest land
snails in the world and can grow up to
8ins (20cm) long, said officials.
The US Department of Agriculture put the
snails in an incinerator after they were
inspected, said Harty, because they can
carry parasites that are harmful to
humans, including one that can lead to
meningitis.
They are also potentially damaging to
nature, said Maveeda Mirza, the CBP
programme manager for agriculture.
"These snails are seriously harmful to local
plants because they will eat any kind of
crop they can get to," said Ms Mirza, who
added that investigations were continuing
into why one person would want so many.
"We're investigating what happened, but it
doesn't seem like there was smuggling
involved," she said.
This is the first time that they have
confiscated such a large quantity, she
added, although there have been cases of
much smaller numbers being found to be
accidentally in people's luggage.

not deserve to be named best player of
the World Cup, arguing it should have

Sports minister and Chairman of the
National Sports Commission, Tammy
Danagogo will today, receive the report of
the Nigerian delegation that spoke with
FIFA in Brazil about lifting the suspension
placed on Nigeria by the world football’s
governing body.
The delegation returned to Nigeria
yesterday and is expected to submit the
report of their meeting with the FIFA to the
sports minister.

No official confirmation on the outcome of
their meeting with FIFA top-shots, but
sources have informed that the issues will
be resolved today – albeit temporarily.
The Plateau state high court that sacked
the Maigari-led board failed to sit last
Friday as earlier scheduled due to an
industrial action embarked upon by state
high courts in the country, but is expected
to sit today as the suit filed by Mrs.
Ebiakpo Rumson-Baribote against the
Nigeria Football Federation is due to be
heard, sources said.
But we were further informed that
negotiations are already underway with
Mrs. Baribote, whose husband, Victor
Rumson-Baribote is serving a fifteen year
ban imposed by the embattled board of
the Nigeria Football Federation, to
withdraw the suit.
“Mrs. Baribote has agreed to withdraw the
suit, but is asking for the 15-year ban on
her husband to be lifted, and for him to be
reinstated as second vice president of the
NFF,” one source said.
“The suit will most likely be withdrawn
today, and (Aminu) Maigari and his board
will be reinstated but that will not be the
end. This move is only to comply with
FIFA’s directive, and get the suspension
lifted,” another source disclosed.
It was also gathered that FIFA were
marveled at the corruption accusations and
documents presented against the Aminu
Maigari board by the Nigerian delegation
but informed the delegates that the NFF
board still has to be reinstated for the
suspension to be lifted.”
Nigeria has got until Tuesday July, 15, to
comply with FIFA’s directive, else will miss
out on the FIFA women’s U20 world cup
set for Canada from August 5.
