SportsCAF At War With UEFA Over AFCON by Akbee(op): 9:53am On Oct 24, 2014
An all-out war has broken out between
CAF and UEFA as Africa’s football
governing body has launched a scathing
attack at the European body’s president
Michel Platini describing his quest for the
postponement of the 2015 Africa Cup of
Nations as ‘treachery’.
CAF angrily lashed out at Platini over his
comments calling for the postponement of
the 2015 AFCON following the outbreak of
the Ebola virus urging the Frenchman to
not to interfere in African affairs.
Sensing a calculated attempt by Platini to
demonize and stigmatize the African Cup
of Nations, CAF has attacked the president
UEFA urging him to concentrate on matters
that affects his confederation.
CAF hit back at the UEFA boss pointing out
that football activities sanctioned by the
Europe governing body continue in Ukraine
despite the war in the country.
“CAF under the leadership of its President,
Issa Hayatou, has always promoted free
expression within it. Far from it therefore,
claim to deprive anyone latitude to express
themselves,” CAF said in the press release
published on its official website.
“But we must beware of what appears in
every way as interference by a president
of a Confederation, in cases involving first
and foremost Africa and CAF.
“Under the principle of non-interference
required to comply, CAF has refrained so
far to comment on some issues on the
managing of European football or any
other continent.”
CAF pointed to the UEFA boss that despite
the shooting down of a passenger plane in
Ukraine and the ongoing civil war in the
country, Europe’s governing body has
sanctioned matches in the nation despite
threat to human life.
“Despite the risks involved in armed conflict
in Ukraine, a country where a civilian
plane was shot down killing nearly 300
people, UEFA did not consider it necessary
to exclude Ukrainian clubs from its
competitions as a security parameter by
hosting games outside this nation, as
treacherously raised once it is about
Africa,” the statement further said.

SportsCourt Sacks Pinnick's NFF by Akbee(op): 9:41am On Oct 24, 2014
Nigeria is in danger of another FIFA ban
after a court ruled that elections that
ushered in Delta FA chairman Amaju
Pinnick as president of the Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF) last month were illegal.
World football governing body FIFA have
warned that should anything hinder the
newly-elected NFF executive committee led
by Pinnick from operating, they will move
for an automatic ban for the country till
the next FIFA congress in May.
On Thursday, Justice Ambrose Allagoa of
the Federal High Court Jos ruled against
the NFF elections in Warri of September 30
as well as the congress preceding it
because they were against his orders.
“I have set aside all the proceedings and
decisions of the Warri Extra Ordinary
meeting of the 20th September and the
Elective Congress of 30th September which
were direct contravention of the orders of
this court as granted on the 19th
September,” said Justice Allagoa.
“Nobody should foist on the court a
complete case of hopelessness so that the
principles of law and justice can be
upheld. Its not enough to say that the
order of court was wrongly made, no
matter how unorthodox, its subsisting
orders, unless set aside, remains law and
must be respected.
“Defendants in this matter have not filed
any counter affidavits in this court to
contest the facts. There is no motion nor
Memorandum of Appearance. This is a
court of Record. On this note, the court
has no option to protect the integrity and
sanctity of court. Court orders are not tea
party. Nobody is above the law. Impunity
must be stopped.”
Some persons on behalf of Chris Giwa,
who maintained he was elected NFF
president on August 26, took the matter to
the court even though FIFA statutes forbid
football matters to be deliberated in a civil
court.
FIFA did not recognise the election of Giwa
and warned he and his supporters to
vacate the NFF office in Abuja.
In July, Nigeria was suspended briefly after
another Jos court sacked the NFF then led
by Aminu Maigari and the country’s sports
minister appointed a civil servant to run
the federation.
NFF appeals
The executive committee of Nigeria Football
Federation has filed for appeal against the
ruling of the Federal High Court, Jos
Judicial Division of Thursday, which
annulled the NFF elections of September
30.
The Judge had given the order annulling
the elections despite a preliminary
objection filed by the NFF challenging the
jurisdiction of the court to hear the case.
NFF 1st Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi,
said: “We have been notified of the ruling
of the court, which was made in spite of
our filing for a preliminary objection
concerning the jurisdiction of the court.
“However, our lawyers have gone to work
immediately the order was made. We are
appealing the ruling and also filing for stay
of execution of the order.”
On Thursday, Justice Ambrose Allagoa of
the Federal High Court Jos ruled against
the NFF elections in Warri of September 30
as well as the congress preceding it.
“I have set aside all the proceedings and
decisions of the Warri Extra Ordinary
meeting of the 20th September and the
Elective Congress of 30th September which
were direct contravention of the orders of
this court as granted on the 19th
September,” said Justice Allagoa.
“Nobody should foist on the court a
complete case of hopelessness so that the
principles of law and justice can be
upheld. Its not enough to say that the
order of court was wrongly made, no
matter how unorthodox, its subsisting
orders, unless set aside, remains law and

EducationUnpaid Salaries: Abia Poly Rector, ASCETA Provost Sacked by Akbee(op): 9:17am On Oct 22, 2014
Abia State Government, amidst months of
unpaid workers’ salaries, has removed
rector of the state Polytechnic, Aba, Sir
Allwell Onukaogu, and the Provost of the
state College of Education Technical,
Arochukwu (ASCETA), Dr. Christian
Nwanmuo.
This is even as both teaching and non-
teaching staff of Abia State Polytechnic on
Monday embarked on an indefinite strike
over unpaid salaries and other
emoluments.
Prof. Eleazar Ikonne, Deputy Vice
Chancellor (Academics) of Abia State
University will replace Sir Onukaogu, while
Prof. Nnenna Kanno is to take over at
ASCETA.
While the staff members of Abia State
Polytechnic were owed six months salary
arrears, their ASCETA counterparts were
also owed six months salary after that of
April was paid last week.
The Sun newspapers had, in recent
editions, reported sickening decay in higher
institutions in Abia State, where lecturers in
such institutions were eating the bread of
sorrow, due to months of unpaid salaries.
According to a terse statement signed by
the Secretary to the State Government
(SSG), Prof. Nkpa Agu Nkpa, the heads of
the institutions were removed due to
unspecified issues in their schools.
They were directed to hand over to their
successors on or before Tuesday next
week.
The government’s action took many by
surprise because while Onukaogu had few
months to the end of his second tenure as
the rector of the state polytechnic,
Nwamuo was recently re-appointed
provost against strong opposition by the
workers.

PoliticsEbola? No!This Is What Nigerians Fear Most. by Akbee(op): 9:08am On Oct 22, 2014
Abuja - In a massive survey of thousands
of people, the Pew Research Center
recently uncovered what people across the
world fear as the biggest global threat.
The results were far from unanimous,
Huffington Post reports.
The survey gave participants five possible
options: Religious and ethnic hatred,
inequality, Aids and other diseases, nuclear
weapons and pollution.
While the US and Europe fear inequality,
Africans seem to be more focused on the
dangers of Aids and other diseases, but
not unanimously.
Unlike most other African nations polled,
Nigerians were most concerned with
religious hate and ethnic clashes.
The scale was tipped towards the threat of
Aids by South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda
and Kenya while Ghanians feared
inequality the most.

CrimeI Went Into Drugs Trafficking For My Wedding-Arrested Drug -Trafficker by Akbee(op):
A 40-year-old patent medicine dealer
arrested by operatives of the National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA,
has blamed his alleged culpability on the
quest to raise money for his wedding billed
for December.
The suspect,
Chike Pauline,
was reportedly
arrested during
the outward
screening of
passengers on
Rwanda Air
flight at the
Murtala
Muhammed
International Airport, Lagos, Monday, with
one kilogramme of substance suspected to
be methamphetamine.
During preliminary investigation, NDLEA
Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, said the
Aba-based businessman was discovered
to be travelling to Bujumbura, Burundi.
In his confessional statement, the suspect
said: “I am a patent medicine dealer in
Aba, Abia State. My arrest is very
unfortunate because I am a hardworking
person.
“I was deceived into drug trafficking
because I was desperate to perform my
marriage ceremony by the end of the
year.
“I was optimistic that I will not be arrested,
but things did not go according to my
expectation.
“What must I do to set myself free from
this predicament?” he asked, begging not
to be allowed to be confined until his
proposed wedding.
Reacting to the arrest, Chairman/Chief
Executive of the anti-narcotic agency,
Ahmadu Giade, said: “The arrest of Chike
will serve as a warning to others that they
will ultimately be caught with drugs and
prosecuted.
“It does not matter if the trafficker is going
to other African countries or outside the
continent; we are prepared to intercept all
drugs.
“I urge members of the public to support
the agency’s drug control efforts.”

PhonesTelecom Companies To Switch-off Fake Phones From Networks — SON by Akbee(op): 5:34pm On Aug 13, 2014
The Federal Government will soon order
telecom companies in the country to effect
a nationwide switch-off of over 12.6 million
counterfeit phones from networks by using
the International Mobile Equipment Identity
(IMEI) number.
This was disclosed by Dr. Joseph
Odumodu, Director General Standards
Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
Speaking during an interactive forum with
Phone Brand Owners in Lagos, the SON
boss pointed out that in 2013 alone, over
N5 billion was spent in Nigeria on the
importation of substandard mobile phones,
adding that as at April this year, Nigeria
currently has a GSM subscriber base of
126,958,904; and 10 percent of these
subscribers (12.6 million) use counterfeit
phones.
He affirmed that the enforcement will boost
consumer rights protection, increased
revenue for the government via taxes;
increase revenue for the genuine mobile
phone manufacturers as well as improved
GSM networks in the country.
According to him, SON is working out the
plan with Nigerian Communications
Commission, NCC, and Consumer Protection
Council; the phone operators, and “Soon
government shall announce the directive to
switch the fake phones off the networks.”
“As more countries switch-off counterfeit
phones, the people behind this scourge will
keep moving to countries that are yet to
adopt this solution, hence the urgent need
to address the situation,” he said.
He enjoined all brand owners to monitor
and protect their products from the
factories (manufacturers) until they get to
the end-users.
“Brand owners have to inscribe coded
identification marks on original phones to
ensure traceability and proper user’s
guide,” he said.
Umego Adaora, CPC Scientific Officer Lagos
Zonal Office, also urged the brand owners
to look beyond making money by
considering the negative effects
substandard phones have on the economy,
the environment and the consumer.
Some of the brand owners reacted to the
development:
Comfort Ebere, whose company is Nokia
mobile sole representative in Nigeria,
noted, ‘There is a phone I saw recently;
Nokia as a brand name and they wrote
L300 but Nokia doesn’t produce L300. I
also saw Nokia L800 and I asked where
are these phones coming from? I was
taken a backed and I went to the office
and spoke with my people to know what
is really happening in the markets. When
we see a real Nokia phones from us we
know. If we key in the code and it doesn’t
bring up the features we tell the customer,
this is not from us.”
Sunday Mbiam, who represented LG
Electronics, said, “I must confess that it
has been very frustrating. You have good
phones in the market but getting
complaints from consumer that most of the
products they found in the markets are
faked. They must have bought it from
roadsides and not from the main dealers.
We have a good warranty in places such
that in case of defaults take your phone to
any of our centre for replacement. And we
want to encourage Nigerians to patronise
our dealers and not road-side phone
vendors.”

Tébily Didier Yves Drogba (French
pronunciation: [didje dʁɔɡba] ; born 11
March 1978), known as Didier Drogba , is
an Ivorian professional footballer who
plays for Chelsea in the Premier League as
a striker , and is the all-time top scorer
and former captain of the Ivory Coast
national team . He is best known for his
career at Chelsea, for whom he scored
more goals than any other foreign player
and is currently the club's fourth highest
goal scorer of all time . In October 2012, he
was voted by Chelsea supporters as the
club's greatest ever player. [3] His key
attributes include his physical strength,
ability in the air, and his ability to retain
possession of the ball. [4]
After playing in youth teams, Drogba made
his professional debut aged 18 for Ligue 2
club Le Mans . A late bloomer , he signed
his first professional contract aged 21; it
was not until the 2002–03 season that he
realised his potential, scoring 17 goals in 34
appearances in Ligue 1 for Guingamp . He
moved to Olympique de Marseille in 2003
for £3.3 million. His scoring success at
Marseille continued, finishing as the third
highest scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals and
helped the club to reach the 2004 UEFA
Cup Final .
In the summer of 2004, Drogba moved to
Chelsea for a club record £24 million fee,
making him the most expensive Ivorian
player in history. In his debut season he
helped the club win their first league title
in 50 years, and a year later he won
another Premier League title . In 2006–07 ,
Drogba scored 33 goals, won the Premier
League Golden Boot and scored the
winning goals in both the League Cup and
FA Cup finals. He won the FA Cup for a
second time in 2009, scoring the equaliser
in the final , and in 2009–10 was
instrumental in Chelsea clinching their first
double , winning his second Golden Boot
and scoring the only goal in the 2010 FA
Cup Final . In March 2012, Drogba scored
his 100th Premier League goal , the first
African player to reach the milestone. [5]
He then became the only player in history
to score in four separate FA Cup finals,
when he scored in Chelsea's win over
Liverpool in the 2012 final .[6] He made his
last appearance for Chelsea in the 2012
UEFA Champions League Final , in which he
scored an 88th-minute equaliser and the
winning penalty in the deciding shoot-out
against Bayern Munich. [7]
An Ivory Coast international between 2002
and 2014, Drogba captained the national
team from 2006 until his retirement and is
the nation's all-time top goalscorer with 65
goals from 104 appearances.[8] He led the
Ivory Coast to the 2006 FIFA World Cup ,
their first appearance in the tournament,
and also scored their first goal. He later
captained the Ivory Coast at the 2010 and
2014 FIFA World Cups . An icon in Africa,
Drogba has been named African Footballer
of the Year in 2006 and 2009.[9] He was
part of the Ivory Coast teams which
reached the final of the Africa Cup of
Nations in 2006 and 2012, but were beaten
on penalties on both occasions. In October
2013, he became the first African footballer
to win the prestigious Golden Foot while
playing for Galatasaray .[10] On 8 August
2014, he retired from international football
with 65 goals in 104 appearances.

SportsDidier Drogba Quits International Football by Akbee(op): 2:29pm On Aug 11, 2014
Didier Drogba has announced his
retirement from international football.
The Chelsea striker scored 65 goals in 104
appearances for Ivory Coast over a 12-
year period. He played in three World
Cups.
Drogba returned to Stamford Bridge last
month, signing a one-year deal after
leaving Turkish side Galatasaray.
The 36-year-old said: "I'm proud to have
captained this team for eight years and to
have contributed to putting my country on
the world stage."
Drogba hopes his decision will help him
make a big impact on his return to the
Premier League after a two-year absence.
He has been backed by Chelsea team-
mate John Terry to reproduce the form that
saw him score 157 goals in 342 games
during his first eight-year spell at
Stamford Bridge.
Drogba added: "It's with much sadness
that I've decided to retire from international
football.
"I can't convey enough thanks to the fans
for all the love and support during these
years. All my goals, all my caps, all our
victories are for you.
"I owe much gratitude to my team-mates,
the players with whom I've shared all
these emotions and I wish them all much
success for the future."
