8. Television is Addictive Television can become addictive. Signs of TV addiction include: using the TV to calm down not being able to control your viewing feeling angry or disappointed in how much TV you watched feeling on edge if kept from watching feeling a loss of control while watching If the idea of giving up TV for a week is horrifying, you may be addicted to television. Luckily, TV addiction is a habit and not a physical addiction like smoking. You should be able to control it once you are aware of the problem and make a decision to change. Ads 9. Television Makes You Buy Things By age 65, the average American has seen 2 million commercials. Your knowledge of products and brands comes from these TV commercials. Your perception of what you need also comes from these commercials. If you didn't know that your iPod could talk to your running shoes, you wouldn't feel like your current shoes are too low- tech. If you didn't know about vacuums that never lose suction, your current vacuum would seem fine. Our perception of need is determined by what we see. Need less by watching less TV. 10. Television Costs Money A basic cable package costs 10k month and many packages cost much more than that. That comes to at least 120k a year spent on TV. For that much money you could: get a gym membership, buy a nice bicycle, invest it every year for 10 years at 10 percent interest and have sum good returns. |
4. Television Makes You Uninteresting Many people have whole conversations that are recaps of TV programs, sporting events and sitcoms. When asked about their real lives, there is little or nothing to report and no stories to tell (except the TV shows they have watched). Life is too interesting and wonderful to spend your time either watching TV or recapping television to your friends. Find something interesting to do: volunteer, read, paint -- anything but watch more TV. 5. Television Ruins Your Relationships A television is turned on an average of 7 hours and 40 minutes per day in many U.S. households. With the TV on that much, there is little time for you and your significant other or children to spend time together, share experiences, and develop deeper relationships. Sitting together and watching TV does not grow a relationship. Turn that TV off and find something to do together -- cooking, exercising, taking a walk, anything. 6. Television is Not Relaxation TV is the opposite of exercise. If you are watching TV you are usually sitting, reclining or lying down. You are burning as few calories as possible. All that extra food you eat while watching TV does not get burned off. Your brain goes into a lull. But you are not relaxing -- your mind is still receiving stimuli from the TV, you are processing information and reacting emotionally. Have you ever found yourself thinking about TV characters? Do you ever dream about TV shows? These are signs that the brain is working hard to process all the TV you have been watching. 7. Television Loses Opportunities If you are sitting and watching TV, nothing new or exciting is going to happen to you. New opportunities and ideas come from being out in the world, talking to people, and reading interesting things. Watching TV isolates you. Nothing is going to change in your world if you are watching TV. Turn off the TV, go out into the world, talk to people, and see what happens.

3. Television Makes You Overweight Eating while distracted limits your ability to assess how much you have consumed. According to Eliot Blass at the University of Massachusetts, people eat between 31 and 74 percent more calories while watching TV. This could add, on average, about 300 calories extra per TV meal. Now consider that at least 40 percent of families watch TV while eating dinner. It becomes clear that TV is a big part of the obesity epidemic in the U.S. and that TV, in fact, makes you gain weight. 1. Television Eats Your Time The average Nigerian adult watches more than 4 hours of television a day. That's 25 percent of waking time spent every day. Imagine if you suddenly had 25 percent more time -- that's three extra months per year! You could get in all your exercise , cook your meals from scratch and still have time left over to write a novel. Over a lifetime, an 80-year-old person would have watched 116,800 hours of television, compared to only 98,000 hours of work. As a nation, adults watch 880 million hours of television every day or 321 billion hours per year. Whew! Imagine what could get done if we all just stopped watching TV. 2. Television Makes You Stressed With the average of four hours a day gone, it's no wonder everyone is feeling stressed out and overwhelmed. We put aside paying bills, finishing projects, making phone calls and cleaning our homes to watch TV. We feel overwhelmed because of all the things we should be doing (exercising, spending time with family, eating right) go undone. And when we feel overwhelmed, tired, and exhausted we don't have energy to anything but -- you guessed it -- watch TV. It is a dreadful cycle. So take a break from TV for a week and see what happens to your life. |
Turning off your television will gain you, on average, about 4 hours per day. Imagine if you took that time to exercise, give your brain a workout and develop strong relationships. Not only would you be adding years to your life, you would become more interesting, energetic, and fun. So take the plunge and try not watching TV for a week. At first it will be strange and awkward, but stick with it and soon you will love all the extra time. Below are ten good reasons why you should turn off your tv set.. |
Pope Francis has said reliable data indicates that "about 2%" of clergy in the Catholic Church are paedophiles. In an interview with the Italian La Repubblica newspaper, the Pope said that abuse of children was like "leprosy" infecting the Church. He vowed to "confront it with the severity it demands". In the same interview he said he believed "solutions" existed to problems posed by the prohibition on priests marrying. Pope Francis said that the 2% estimate came from advisers. It would represent around 8,000 priests out of a global number of about 414,000. "Among the 2% who are paedophiles are priests, bishops and cardinals. Others, more numerous, know but keep quiet. They punish without giving the reason," Pope Francis said. "I find this state of affairs intolerable," he went on. Above the interview La Repubblica ran the headline: "Pope says: Like Jesus, I shall use a stick against paedophile priests." Last year Pope Francis strengthened the Vatican's laws against child abuse and earlier this month begged forgiveness from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, at his first meeting with victims since his election. Many survivors of abuse by priests are angry at what they see as the Vatican's failure to punish senior officials who have been accused of covering up scandals. Asked about the celibacy rule for priests, Pope Francis recalled that it was adopted 900 years after the death of Jesus Christ and pointed out that the Eastern Catholic Church allows its priests to marry. "The problem certainly exists but it is not on a large scale. It will need time but the solutions are there and I will find them." While the incidence of paedophilia in the general population is not accurately known, some estimates have put it at less than five percent. Earlier this month the Pope begged forgiveness from victims of child abusers within the Church |
Algeria’s Djamel Haimoudi has been confirmed as the referee for the third- place match of the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup between Brazil and The Netherlands on Saturday. A statement from FIFA Media Office said Haimoudi will become the first Confederation of African Football (CAF) referee to officiate a third-place match of a FIFA World Cup. “The match will be the 43-year-old’s fourth task at the competition after the group stage matches between Australia and The Netherlands, and Costa Rica and England. “He also handled the Round of 16 match between Belgium and the U.S. “In his career, Haimoudi oversaw two matches in last year’s FIFA Confederations Cup, also in Brazil, and he was selected for the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in 2012. “He was also selected for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011. “Haimoudi also has notable experience in his confederation CAF, taking charge at three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations — in 2008, 2012 and 2013. “At the end of the most recent edition in 2013, he refereed Nigeria versus Burkina Faso in the final. “Finally, the Algerian officiated four more important final matches, including the deciders for the CAF Champions League 2008, 2012 and 2013 and the CAF Super Cup 2008,’’ the statement said.(NAN) |

WILL the World Cup final become a “Holy War”? At the very least, Sunday’s match could put millions of Catholics – not to mention Vatican employees – in a bit of a bind. Will they root for Argentina, the homeland of Pope Francis, who is known to be an ardent soccer aficionado? Or will they back Germany, the native country of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, also a big football fan? And what about the Big Referee Upstairs? Whose prayers will he heed when the game is on the line? Germany reached the final match on Tuesday by blowing out Brazil, the host country. Argentina beat the Netherlands on Wednesday afternoon. Of course, both Popes (not to mention God) have more important things on their minds. But the pontiffs have also said that sports can be more than fun and games. “The sport of football can be a vehicle of education for the values of honesty, solidarity and fraternity, especially for the younger generation,” Benedict told Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper back in 2008. His successor, Francis has echoed those remarks, and even promised not to pray for Argentina. But a Catholic who met Pope Francis this week to discuss more serious matters said that the pontiff seemed to be secretly pulling for his home team. “He absolutely wants for Argentina to win,” Peter Saunders, a victim of sexual abuse from England who met Francis on Monday, told the Boston Globe. “He didn’t say it out loud, but you could see it in his eyes, he’s a closet fan.” And earlier this month, before Argentina played Switzerland, Francis jokingly told his Swiss Guards, “It’s going to be war!” It will be interesting to see what the Vatican says about the Argentina-Germany matchup. The men are known to be close, with Francis saying he and Benedict “are brothers.” Maybe the “brothers” will put a little wager on the high-stakes soccer match, or maybe this just means that God has a really good sense of humor. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said the popes didn’t have plans to watch Sunday’s final together, but left often the possibility that something could be, ah, afoot. |

Just as we exclusively reported yesterday, the South African Football Association followed up with a confirmation of our story when it denied, in categorical terms, that it had not given any coach, including Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi, the job of the Bafana Bafana coach. The SAFA statement came in the heels of spurious reports that said the former Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi had been handed the lucrative job, beating stiff competition from top European coaches. The SAFA denial reads, “The South African Football Association (SAFA) would like to clarify further insinuations that the Association has offered Stephen Keshi the job as Bafana Bafana coach. Reports coming through and carried out by several media outlets are quoting Mr Keshi alleging he has an offer on the table from SAFA. “There is no iota of truth in this statement. SAFA has not offered any coach the Bafana Bafana coaching job and we don’t take kindly to such rumours,” said SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan from Brazil. “It is not true because SAFA has not entered into a discussion with any coach or a representative of any coach,” he added. Just after our exclusive story yesterday many online reports in the afternoon said that Keshi was on his way to South Africa for the Bafana Bafana job. Shortly after that the official statement came from SAFA. |
we have the same size of garri morsel.. |
sumone was reacting to the development on facebook thus**now i can correctly predict the future headline;MY CHIP WAS HACKED N NOW I HAVE TRIPLET..LOL |
The chip would need replacing every 16 years. A contraceptive computer chip that can be controlled by remote control has been developed in Massachusetts. The chip is implanted under a woman's skin, releasing a small dose of levonorgestrel, a hormone. This will happen every day for 16 years, but can be stopped at any time by using a wireless remote control. The project has been backed by Bill Gates, and will be submitted for pre-clinical testing in the US next year - and possibly go on sale by 2018. The device measures 20mm x 20mm x 7mm and will be "competitively priced", its creators said. Convenience factor Tiny reservoirs of the hormone are stored on a 1.5cm-wide microchip within the device. A small electric charge melts an ultra-thin seal around the levonorgestrel, releasing the 30 microgram dose into the body. There are other types of contraceptive implant available, the researchers noted, but all require a trip to a clinic and an outpatient procedure in order to be deactivated. "The ability to turn the device on and off provides a certain convenience factor for those who are planning their family," said Dr Robert Farra from MIT. The next challenge for the team is to ensure the absolute security of the device to prevent activation or deactivation by another person without the woman's knowledge. "Communication with the implant has to occur at skin contact level distance," said Dr Farra. "Someone across the room cannot re- programme your implant. "Then we have secure encryption. That prevents someone from trying to interpret or intervene between the communications." Huge range The same technology could be used to administer other drugs. Simon Karger, head of the surgical and interventional business at Cambridge Consultants, said that implanted technology like this faces a range of challenges and risks. But he added that overall "the value to the patient of these types of implant can be huge and we foresee a future in which a huge range of conditions are treated through smart implanted systems". Implanted devices could help people who forget to take medication at the correct time The innovation comes at a time when governments and organisations around the world have agreed to try to bring family planning to around 120 million more women by 2020. This challenge opens the door to this kind of implant technology being used in areas where access to traditional contraceptives is limited - a bigger priority, argued Gavin Corley, a biomedical engineer. "That's a humanitarian application as opposed to satisfying a first-world need," he told the BBC. |
