PoliticsI Am Ready For Arrest:Aregbesola by Akbee(op): 9:43am On Jul 23, 2014
The APC candidate and incumbent
governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola yesterday
declared that he was not afraid of the
alleged plot by the leadership of the PDP
and the police to arrest him and some of
his associates ahead of the election.

Addressing APC supporters at the mega
rally held at Unity High School, Ejigbo,
Governor Aregbesola said that all the
chieftains of APC in the state are ready for
the police arrest adding that the arrest of
APC leadership will not deter people from
casting their votes for the party. The mega
rally was also addressed by Governor
Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State.
Aregbesola charged the people of the state
to ensure that they cast their votes even if
he was arrested by the police saying that
his arrest is meaningless without their
votes.
He also called on the people not to be
intimidated by the threat of arrest by the
police, stressing that we are available for
police arrest if that is what the PDP led
federal government wants to do with the
deployment of heavy soldiers and other
security operatives to the state.
According to him, “If am arrested, my only
charge to you is that don’t be afraid. Just
go out and cast your vote. Police arrest is
meaningless. We are ready for them. We
are not running away. We are available
and we are ready to lead our people to
the promise land.
Governor Aregbesola said that his
administration has just kicked off it ignition
and it will not stop until 2018 when his
government will ensure that all dilapidated
schools are no more and poverty vanished
in the state.
Earlier, Governor Abiola Ajimobi had
enjoined the people of the state to ensure
that they return Aregbesola to office for
the completion of the on-going
infrastructural and development projects.

CrimeFarmer Arrested For Stabbing Wife To Death With Bottle In Ogun by Akbee(op): 9:31am On Jul 23, 2014
ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Police
Command yesterday, said it had arrested a
47-year-old farmer, Gbenga Ogunfolabo,
for stabbing his wife, Bosede Ogunfolabo,
45, to death with broken bottle during a
fisticuff.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the
state, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a
statement.
Adejobi said the police detectives attached
to Ishara division of the command arrested
the suspect on Monday, July 21 at Ishara
in Remo North Local Government Area the
state few days after he committed the
crime.
According to the PPRO, the incident
occurred July 16 but no one reported the
case to the police as the families
concerned wanted to sweep the murder
under the carpet as a result of the
pressure on the deceased’s family by the
family of the suspect but one of the
relations of the deceased (names withheld)
decided to report the matter to the police
for thorough investigation.
“It was gathered that the couple had eight
children but lost two to sickness and that
the husband has been maltreating the
deceased, a petty trader, before he
eventually stabbed her to death.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State,
CP Ikemefuna Okoye, has directed that the
matter be transferred to the Department of
Criminal Investigation, Eleweran, Abeokuta
for investigation.
He advised the public to always report
crimes to the police to generate correct
statistics and to allow justice have its way.
“The Commissioner of Police has also
assured the general public of the
command’s commitment in ensuring that
every case reported to the police is
adequately investigated with a view to
restoring lost confidence and trust in the
minds of the public,” the PPRO said.

Foreign AffairsRe: Netanyahu, HAMAS And Dearth Of Reason In Middle East by Akbee(m): 8:06am On Jul 23, 2014
maasoap: One hundred or one thousand yearsfrom now, posterity will wonder howit was that we allowed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to linger on for this long. Although the conflict has its beginnings in Ancient Times (1250BC-638AD), its modern origin can be traced to the shenanigans ofEuropean powers and the politics ofthe two World Wars and the events surrounding the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 and the fallout from the subsequent Israeli-Arab war of 1967 and the 1973 YomKippur war.Historians will tell you that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the single most enduring conflict of anygeneration. It is the one conflict, and the one region, that has confounded statesmen, world capitals and casual observers the most. It is the conflict without end. Or at least, so it seems. And especially if you follow what’s been happening in recent weeks, you couldn’t help but wonder when this insanity will come to an end. And frankly, it is one of the great failings of the United States of America, Brittan, Russia and the United Nations.
This needs not be a “conflict without end.” There could be peace and security between the Palestinians and the Israelis if (a) HAMAS and similar non-state actors affirm Israel’s right to existence, peace and security; (b) the Palestinians’ inalienable right tocomplete freedom is realised and guaranteed; and (c) sections of religious and political organisationsin and outside of the US stopped playing politics with peoples’ lives and destiny. The solution may not be this simple. But really, many complicated, convoluted and knotty situations have been resolved or mitigated by way of reason, common sense and pragmatism.Reason, common sense and pragmatism are what seem to be lacking here. HAMAS cannot defeat the Israelis (who are backed by the USA). Today’s reality is that not even the US can tell the Israelis to back off – or to grant the Palestinians complete autonomy. The days of Washington dictating toTel Aviv are long gone. Forever gone! And there is nothing, really, the White House – especially the Obama White House – can do aboutit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proved this point on several occasions. And even the United Nations is without fangs and claws when it comes to Mr. Benyamin Netanyahu. He is a one-man army who doesn’t care about global opinion. Many world leaders seem to be afraid of him. Those who are not afraid despise him.
Even so, as the Israeli leaders and his soldiers get ready to wipe out HAMAS, they must remember the instructive words of John G. Stoessinger in that seminal text, Why Nations Go To War. He reminded us that “The emperors and generals who sent their men to war in August 1914 thought in terms of weeks, not months, let alone years.”President George W. Bush was also under the impression that Iraq and Afghanistan will be a surgical operation. After the fall of Bagdad and Kabul, Bush expected to be hugged and decorated. He was dead wrong! We all now know what happened. We sometimes fail to realise that military quests are unpredictable. What’s more, wars, as Steve Yetiv tells us, “reflect the failure of reason to control events and emotions.” In the estimation of Kenneth Waltz, “in wars, there is no victory but only varying degrees of defeat.” Therefore, will the ongoing undertaking result in total victory for Netanyahu? No! Will HAMAS achieve its stated and unstated goals? No!Meanwhile, deaths and destruction and suffering will continue as the world stands askance impotently. The Israelis are not going away; andneither is HAMAS. Even if there is a ceasefire today, the conflict will flare up again tomorrow. This will be the pattern until reason, commonsense and pragmatism prevail on all sides .
For Netanyahu, the HAMAS “wahala” is personal. Truly personal! HAMAS and its predecessors at least had a modicum of respect for Yitzhak Rabin, Yitzhak Shamir, Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon andEhud Olmert. But not for Netanyahu.Nothing seems to have occupied his mind more than HAMAS and Hezbollah. And globally, Netanyahu is the least admired Prime Minister of Israel since its founding in 1948. What’s more, in wanting to avoid themistakes of previous prime ministers, he is determined to crush, first, HAMAS, and then Hezbollah. If he could, he’d accomplish both tasks instantaneously. Unfortunately, he can’t.Israel is a democracy. This is a hopeful, determined, resilient and progressive country. Many people are under the impression that without America’s backing, it will crumble under pressure and attack from its regional enemies. Well, thatis a grand fallacy! This is a state with all the trappings of a modern nation-state and with a superior economic and military prowess.
Having the US as a friend doesn’t hurt. It is a bonus. It does not diminish the greatness of that great land and its people. Nation-states may rise and fall in terms of greatness; but they seldom disappear as some people are wishing Israel would.Just as no force on the face of the earth can make Israel go away or push it into oblivion, no force can get rid of HAMAS. And that’s the reality.
What is likely to happen to HAMAS is what happened to the Haganah – a Jewish guerrilla group from 1920 to 1948; and to the “National Military Organisation in the Land of Israel,” otherwise known as Irgun. Publicly available records indicate that after the founding of Israel in 1948, their members were conscripted into the Israel Defence Forces. Menachem Begin, the sixth Prime Minister of Israel, for instance, was an active member. The metamorphosis of Haganah and Irgun into a legitimate arm of government is nothing new. Many of the Americans who fought colonial Britain went on to become respected and respectable men of post-1776 America. This was also the case in Ireland and South Africa and Algeria and wherever there has been armed conflict against a colonising force.
HAMAS will be absorbed into government in a free and independent Palestine. That will be its fate. So, if you want HAMAS dead, simplygrant Palestinians complete independence. Nothing else will suffice; nothing else will bring peace and security to that part of the world. This is because even if you kill off its current leadership, there are many more Palestinians ready to replace them.
No generation will bow to colonisation. None! The practical thing to do, then, is to immediately embark on a two-state solution: Safe and secure Israel… Free and independent Palestine.

HealthScientists Make Giant Step In Curing HIV Through Chemotherapy by Akbee(op): 12:54pm On Jul 22, 2014
Scientists say they have made an
"exciting" step towards curing HIV by
forcing the virus out of hiding.
HIV can become part of someone's DNA
and lie dormant for decades, making a
cure impossible.
Early stage research in six people,
reported at the Aids 2014 conference,
shows that low-dose chemotherapy can
awaken the virus.
Experts said it was a promising start, but it
was unlikely the drug would work on its
own to cure HIV.
Anti-viral drugs can drive HIV down to
undetectable levels in the bloodstream,
meaning people who are HIV-positive can
have a near-normal life expectancy.
But there is problem. HIV can incorporate
its DNA into our own, where it lies beyond
the reach of drugs and the immune
system - it is known as the HIV
reservoir .
When drug treatment stops, the virus can
leap out of the reservoir and renew its
assault.
International research is aimed at flushing
the virus out of its reservoirs.
A team at Aarhaus University in Demark
tried using a chemotherapy drug,
romidepsin, which is used in lymphoma.
Six HIV patients with undetectable levels of
the virus were enrolled into trial.
They each received a reduced dose of
romidepsin once a week for three weeks.
There was a noticeable jump in viral levels
in the blood in five of the patients.
One of the scientists involved, Dr Ole
Sogaard, told the BBC: "Every step forward
is always exciting, and I think this is quite
important."
He said there had been a lot of scepticism
about the drug being potent enough.
"We've shown it is possible to kick the
virus out of the cells, the next step is to
actually kill the cells.
"The trial now moves into a new phase
which combines the romidepsin with
something to enhance the immune system
and in our case this is an HIV vaccine."
Side-effects were those normally
associated with chemotherapy, including
fatigue.

Difficult challenges
HIV viruses emerging from a hijacked cell
There are still many challenges ahead.
The team cannot say what proportion of
cells hiding HIV are being activated by
romidepsin.
Another looming question is which
reservoirs are being successfully targeted.
HIV can hide in immune cells in the blood,
but there are bigger reservoirs in the gut
and central nervous systems and it is not
clear whether they are activated by the
blood-based chemotherapy.
"We know it's a step forwards, but we
don't know how big, it might just be a
single step or it could be a great leap
forward," Dr Sogaard added.
Romidepsin works by "relaxing" tight
coiled up bundles of DNA. This exposes
the hidden HIV genetic code and leads to
the production of new viruses.
Dr Andrew Freedman, a reader in
infectious diseases at Cardiff University,
told the BBC: "As a proof of concept it
does look promising.
"The search for a cure is very much on,
it's not going to be easy and it's unlikely
a single drug like this would be sufficient.
"There's a lot of doubt it would be enough
to deplete the reservoir completely.
"Most people think a single approach will
not be enough, a drug like this perhaps
needs to be combined with vaccines or
even gene-therapy."

Nigerian athletes to the Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow, Scotland are the
poorest dressed among the delegations
that will contest for sporting honours when
the events begin on Wednesday.
Reports from Glasgow revealed Nigeria
athletes have not been supplied with kits
and as a result they are dressed in
different colours unlike their counterparts
from other countries who are rightly fitted
with track suits bearing their national
colours.
Apart from those doing the track and field,
all others have no kits. According to a
senior Nigerian athlete at the Games, “it is
an eyesore seeing Nigerian athletes in
tatters,” he said, adding “some are even
wearing bathroom slippers.
“The athletics team was lucky to have
their own personal kits from previous
outings. Nobody has been supplied with
kits and no one knows whether there will
be any.”
One country many colours: Nigerian
athletes in a recent international event.
He disclosed that since they arrived the
games village in Glasgow, there hasn’t
been any meeting with Nigerian officials.
They have not been told on what to expect
with regards to allowances or even
conduct and other logistics that will inform
their movements. The Nigerian team lacks
organisation.
“Most of the athletes are feeling dispirited
here. We have not seen any of our officials
and we are not happy with the situation. I
don’t know why it has to be Nigeria all the
time and it is quite a shame,” he said

When triumphant Germany returned home

But somewhere amidst all the jumping,
