New York - A man who lived in solitary
has been found dead on his property in a
hut with no heat or running water, though
he had three million dollars in the bank,
local media reported.
George Konnight, 79, was found dead in
the forest on his family’s rural property in
New York’s Lower Hudson Valley, 30 km
north of New York City.
He lived a solitary, hermit-like existence,
the Journal News in White Plains, New
York, reported.
Konnight’s had sold 13 hectares of his 80-
hectare family property a few years ago,
reaping some three million dollars to pay a
130,000-dollar tax bill.
Local police, Lt. Mark Emma told the
newspaper that Konnight’s attorney and
another man had checked on the recluse
now and then, after both of Konnight’s
sisters had died.
“He’d wander through the paths and
woods,’’ Emma said. “It looks like he cut
his own firewood. He had one light. The
house was in disarray.
“People could have thought the house
may have been abandoned.’’
Thomas O’Connell, Konnight’s lawyer, said
that his client and the two sisters had lived
“off the grid’’ on the property and had
never held jobs, selling off parts of the
property when they needed money.
“They wanted to stay where they were
because they enjoyed their bucolic
lifestyle, being isolated and surrounded by
trees with deer running through the yard,’’
O’Connell told The Journal News.
“Their only overhead was taxes. They
didn’t want to get involved with the
government. They just couldn’t keep up
with the taxes.’’
O’Connell said Konnight had never been to
a dentist and had not had a telephone
until recently, when O’Connell persuaded
him to get a mobile phone.

LAGOS — Three people were reportedly
killed by Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit,
BRT, with number plate LAGOS XQ 766
LSD and marked LAGBUS F014, yesterday,
at Awoyaya area of Ibeju-Lekki along
Lekki/Epe Expressway, Lagos.
Eyewitness said the victims were on a
motorcycle from Container area of Ibeju-
Lekki and were reportedly being chased by
RRS men before they ran into a BRT,
which killed them instantly.
Chairman of the Arewa community, Ibeju-
Lekki, Musa Sule, said: “What happened
today (yesterday) was against the right of
the people, especially the Arewa
community living in this area.
“I live in Abijo area of Ibeju-Lekki, when I
got to Awoyaya bus-stop, to my surprise,
I saw three people on the road, dead. I
was told that RRS men were chasing them
but as they tried to escape, they ran into
BRT. Both the BRT driver and the RRS
men had escaped.
“We are calling on government to come to
our rescue because this problem is getting
too much in this area. This is not the first
time this will happen. This problem must
not continue in this area because we are
law-abiding people. We will not carry the
corpses until appropriate steps are taken.”
One of the indigenes of Ado/Badore area
in Ajah, Alhaji Adams, pleaded with
government to prevail so that peace will
reign in the area.
He said: ”There is need to take the
corpses off the road. These are human
beings, they should be respected. What
happened has happened. We are law-
abiding citizens, we don’t want trouble in
Ibeju Lekki.”
Meanwhile, the Baale of Awoyaya, Alhaji
Yisa Babatunde, has said it was sad to
experience such horrible incident in his
domain.
According to him, “the activities of the
Police in this part of Lagos is nothing to
write home about. There is need for
government to look into this problem so
that it does not degenerate into riot.”

LAGOS — Thirteen Nigerian banks have
been listed among the Leading 1000 Global
Banks as published by The Banker
magazine of the Financial Times Group
in its 2014 edition.
The Nigerian banks that made the ranking
based on Tier-1 capital are Zenith Bank,
Guaranty Trust Bank, FirstBank, Access
Bank, United Bank for Africa, Fidelity Bank
and Ecobank Nigeria.
Others are Skye Bank, First City Monument
Bank, Diamond Bank, Stanbic IBTC
Holdings, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria
and Union Bank of Nigeria.
The report, which was released weekend,
said banks in the world, for the first time
since the global financial crisis, returned
profit of $920 billion which is 23 per cent
more than their previous peak of $786
billion achieved in 2007 before the financial
crisis.
The report, which listed 13 Nigerian banks
that made the ranking, underlines
Nigeria’s financial sector’s leading position
in Africa as no other African country has
up to 13 banks in the Top 1000 World
listing of banks.
According to the report, Zenith Bank
ranked top in Nigeria at 293 as Guaranty
Trust is on number 415, FirstBank on
number 424, Access Bank 532, United
Bank for Africa ranked 539 and Fidelity
622.
The report said profit on capital of three
Nigerian banks that are not foreign-owned
subsidiaries increased. These are FirstBank,
that has its profit on capital increased to
25.32 per cent from 25.13 per cent; Access
Bank, from 21.19 per cent to 21.24 per cent
and First City Monument Bank, 15.77 per
cent from 15.07 per cent.
23% increase in profit
Editor of the magazine, Mr. Brain Caplen,
noted that the 23 per cent increase in
profit of global banks from 2007 “is a
good news but the better news is that
capital has also increased at a reasonable
pace whereas assets have stayed flat. This
means that returns on capital are only
slightly improved but the hope is that this
upturn is more sustainable than the last
one.”
Caplen disclosed that a large proportion of
the profit is from China— about 32 per
cent of the total which is more than the
next three highest profit countries of USA,
Japan and Canada combined.
Highest in Africa
Of the 25 top banks in Africa from the
ranking, the highest of eight is from
Nigeria, the largest economy in the
continent while the United Bank for Africa
is the only Nigerian bank in the top 10
highest movers in Africa.
In all, Africa has 31 banks in the Top 1000
World Banks 2014 with Nigeria having 13
representing 41.94 per cent. The 31 African
banks in the ranking are from nine
countries: Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt,
Angola, Gabon, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco
and Togo.
Globally, Senior Editor of the magazine,
Philip Alexander, stressed that banks in
this 2014 ranking “are stronger than ever”
as “the level of capital held by banks in
this ranking continues to accelerate, with
the minimum Tier 1 capital required to
enter the Top 1000 World Banks now fast
appraching $400 million. This has almost
doubled since the 2005 ranking,” he
added.
The Banker, a publication of Financial
Times Newspaper which is regarded as
the most influential newspaper in the
world, is a global financial intelligence
magazine published since 1926. It is the
definitive publication that provides guide to
bank ratings and analysis globally and the
definitive reference on international banking
for finance experts, governments, chief
finance officers, CEOs, Central Bank
Governors, Finance Ministers, and other
decision makers globally.
According to The Global Capital Markets
Surveys (GCMS), the only independent

Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in

spoken about it on any platform. It

what I could do to avert such negative
publicity. I can’t attack everybody that
writes negative stories about me. I think,
it’s part of the occupational hazards on

A-list Nollywood star, Uche Jombo isn’t
exactly known for controversies or blowing
her top over issues. It seems the beautiful,
prolific movie maker is too busy making
movies, her 14th now, to be concerned
with wallowing in little waters of gossips

But recently, a scandal emerged out of
nowhere that she aborted a six-month-
old pregnancy and it got the ‘Damaged’
superstar so infuriated, she said she could
have had the head of the reporter, who,
according to her, fabricated the story.
“You know how emotional I am. I have
cried for smaller things but this one, I still
curse the person, till tomorrow. It will only
take God for me to see the person and not
harm him”
“For me, that was my biggest scandal
ever. It was really damaging and I won’t
stop fighting till I get justice”, said the
soon-to-be mother.
She continued: “Well, I went to court with
the soft-sell magazine, for writing what I
have come to consider the worst media
story in my entire life and career, which
was completely false and malicious. During
the world premiere of my second movie,
Holding Hope , I lost so much weight
deliberately based on my character, in the
movie, as a cancer patient only for this
paper to write on their front page that I
aborted a pregnancy at six months, hence
the loss of weight,” she recollects with
tears in her eyes.

Long before now, it was as if Chika Ike
were immuned to controversies and
scandals because of her status as a
married woman. No sooner had her
marriage gone up in flames than messy
stories began to emerge about her.
She got married early at the age of 20
and had a long spell of scandal-free life
until she dumped her husband and started
seeing the other side of life. The first nasty
story that crept up to haunt her was her
dating the Senate President, David Mark.
The story alleged the Senate President
even bought her a car and got an Abuja
shop for her.
“I made this particular issue clear in
several interviews. I don’t know David
Mark personally. I only know him as the
Senate President. David Mark did not buy
me a car, neither did he help me with my
shop in Abuja. All I’m thinking about right
now is my divorce as I am officially
separated”, Chika Ike said at the time.
But she is beginning to learn that
marriage has certain privileges as more
and more nasty stories are coming her
way. But Chika seems to be well oiled to
ride this new development in her life.
“Honestly, I have learnt to cope with them.
I have developed a rhino skin. Initially,
they used to get to me but now I’ve
realized it comes with the job and part of
growing up”, she said.

Even though Ebube Nwagbo has told
people times without number that she is
just the girl next door, people have not

Again’ producer, who is rising in the trade

about me, I feel like going crazy. But I
have learnt to always put on a smile and
take them with a pinch of salt. It is not
easy for people to appreciate you and
admire what you do. Take for instance, the
story of how I went to church to pray and
fast because of a man. I was born into a
very strict Christian home, those who know
me can attest to this. So I was brought up
to go to church and do the things of God. I
went to church on a Sunday, like every
other person, and offered to do something
for God. But some people blew it up into a
silly story. It is a thing of the past now
and it has not stopped me from helping or
giving to the church or to the needy” she
said, concerning the scandal.

They say, a golden fish has no hiding
place. This is a mantra most celebrities
have found out the very hard way. At one
time or the other, most celebrities,
especially those in the make-believe
world, have had to grapple with one
scandal or the other.
While not all scandals about them are true,
some scandals are actually courted
inadvertently or deliberately by the stars
for reasons best known to them.
But do scandals, make or mar, stars?
This is a question that would continue to
attract diverse answers but the reality on
ground is that different scandals affect
different stars differently. Just as different
stars would react differently to different
scandals.
Here, are some scandals some Nollywood
stars found either distasteful, unbelievable,
or false.

President Goodluck Jonathan had good
intentions when he ordered the sports
minister, Tammy Danagogo to fly over $
3.5m to the Eagles to pay the players
their World Cup appearance fees.
The players had demanded their share of
the $8m that fifa would pay the Nigeria
Football Federation as one of the World
Cup finalists. They protested before the
match against France and even refused to
train for a day over it.
FIFA was yet to pay Nigeria their World
Cup bonus but the team, fearing that they
might not be paid when FIFA pays the NFF
protested and wanted theirs in advance.
We gathered that after Senate President,
David Mark, contacted the Presidency over
the problem in Brazil, President Jonathan
ordered Sports Minister to take money to
the team in Brazil. And in a Presidential
jet, the minister landed and handed the
money to Stephen Keshi, the coach. Keshi
asked that the money be given to the
team secretary Enebi.
The sharing of over $3.5 money, we
gathered, took its tool on the team on the
eve of the round of 16 match with France
last Monday. Who gets what? They
continued debating and arguing on the
sharing formula till 2.00am on the match
day.

The President’s intended good gesture
backfired.
“Did you notice that the players tired out
in the dying minutes of the match and
conceded two goals,”a source with the
team asked yesterday.
“There was no way they could have been
strong when they were fighting over
money and could not sleep well and
prepare for the match against France,”the
source said adding “the fight over money
destroyed the team and unfortunately the
President’s gesture backfired.”
We also gathered that President Jonathan
was aware that NFF had not received the
money from FIFA but was sad that the
federation failed to explain things to them
and avoid the action that was going to
tarnish the image of the country. The
news that Nigerian players were protesting
to the extent of missing training disturbed
the President and he gave the directive
that boosted the purses of the players but
which didn’t help Nigeria’s game against
France. Problems will eventually arise as
the players who played the qualifying
matches but who didn’t make the World
Cup team were all entitled to the World
Cup grant. But those who shared the
money in Brazil were so much in a hurry
that it was not clear if they included them.

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has
been named in an alleged directorship
registration and forgery scandal involving a
multi-billion Naira firm.
Three suspects – Mrs. Eunice Odirri and
Mr. Sunny Esiso, both children of the
owner of the firm, the late Chief E.A. Esiso,
and a lawyer, Mr. Wilfred Okoli – were said
to have been held and interrogated, last
week, by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of
the police in connection with the alleged
scandal.
The suspects were, however, granted bail
while the SFU operatives were believed to
be after their alleged collaborators in CAC.
SFU sources told Sunday Vanguard the
suspects may be arraigned before a
Magistrate Court in Warri, Delta State, this
week, on charges relating to fraud and
forgery concerning the registration of new
directors for Gateway Estates Limited, the
company with substantial real estate
holdings across the country, particularly in
Warri, and founded by the late Esiso. Esiso
and his wife, Mrs. Iketiti Esiso, were the
sole directors of the company.
Esiso’s passage in 2011, according to a
petition by his first son, Y. Esiso, and
upon which the SFU is acting, left Gateway
Estates Limited with one director and
hence the need to appoint at least one
more director to the company’s board.
Consequently, the family, in the petition to
the Commissioner of Police, SFU, Milverton
Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, dated February 15,
2014, headed to a Delta State High Court,
sitting in Effurun, which granted Esiso’s
first son and the eldest daughter as
interim administrators of his estate.
The duo then approached the CAC to
request that they be allowed to appoint
new directors to the board of their father’s
multi billion Naira firm. This, the petition
claimed, became necessary because the
passing of their father had left the
company with only one director, in
contravention of the legal requirement of a
minimum of two directors.
The petition said: “The CAC rejected their
request on the grounds that an order from
a state court does not suffice to command
the compliance of CAC. CAC insisted that
the duo must go to yet another court, this
time the Federal High Court, to get an
order for an extraordinary general meeting.
The strident objection of Barrister Ama
Etuwewe, acting for the court appointed
administrators to the illegality of this
peremptory command, did not sway CAC
from her flagrant contempt of an order of
court”.
Nevertheless, the interim administrators
reportedly instructed their counsel to
approach the Federal High Court for the
further order as insisted upon by the CAC.
“In January 2013, the Federal High Court,
sitting in Abuja, granted the said order,
subsequent upon which an extra ordinary
general meeting was summoned by the
administrators at which resolutions were
passed and adopted and a list of new
Board members nominated and forwarded
to CAC”, the petition stated.
But to the amazement of the
administrators and their lawyers, CAC
allegedly rejected the administrators’ list of
directors mandated by the Federal High
Court order!
The petition alleged: “When pressed, they
refused to give reasons for their second,
more egregious contempt of court but a
quick perusal of the files of CAC revealed
that while CAC was sending the
administrators on a wild goose chase for
more court orders, they had proceeded
with the acceptance of a list of directors
from one Barrister Wilfred Okoli of C84,
Banex Plaza, Wuse 11, acting for the duo
of Mrs Eunice Oddiri and Mr. Sunny Esiso,
siblings and the fifth and sixth children of
the late Chief Esiso.
“Ostensibly, CAC accepted the list from this
duo on the basis of a form purported to
be signed by the sole surviving director,
Mrs Iketiti Esiso, and one Mr. Anthony
Chikwendu, who had acted as Company
Secretary at the time of formation of
GateWay Estates Ltd. in March 1973, 41
years ago.
“Meanwhile, the interim administrators had
made spirited efforts to locate Mr. Anthony
Chikwendu many years prior, had
established the fact that he had been
deceased for over a decade and had
consequently proceeded to the court option
for the summoning of an extra ordinary
general meeting”.
A family source said: “When the name of
Mr. Anthony Chikwendu was appended to
the April 2013 form and when, on
examination, it was discovered that the
name was incorrectly spelt and the affixed
signature suspected to be forgery, the
case was reported to the Special Fraud
Unit of the police”.
