Press statement from EFCC

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to the falsehood which has been spreading on the social media that the EFCC has arrested the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. This is not only a figment of the imagination of the purveyor of the fake news, but an evil machination by the creator and carriers of the news aimed at creating anarchy in the country.

For the record, the EFCC never went to the house of the CJN for arrest neither was invitation extended to him.

Several calls and short messages received all point to the fact that the brains behind the fake news had one thing in mind: to act as agent of destabilization. We would not give in to their plots.

One of the architect of the fake news, Femi Fani-Kayode, was quoted as saying “Why have the EFCC surrounded the home of CJN Onnoghen and why are they seeking to arrest him? These people want Nigeria to burn! Buhari call off your dogs before it is too late! This is a democracy and not a gestapo state! In the name of God let this madness stop”. Another arrowhead of the fake news, Yinka Odumakin shared a non-existent video which has gone viral.

We want to assure Nigerians that while we would fight corruption in line with the mandate setting up the Commission, agents of darkness, in the likes of Femi Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin and his cohorts, would never be able to manipulate the people against the Commission.

We also want to assure Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin and other purveyors of the evil news to be ready to defend their actions in the court of law as the EFCC will file libel suit against them without further delay.

https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/SE-Governors-Forum.jpg

Governors of South-South geo-political zone have described moves to arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, today by the Federal Government as a demonstration of lack of respect for the people of Niger Delta, the nation’s judiciary and democracy by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The communique read: “We note that the unfortunate action against the CJN further reinforces the perception that the Buhari administration has no regard for the sentiments of Nigerians, in particular, the people of Niger Delta, and the rule of law

“It is a fact that this administration has a penchant for flagrant disobedience of and disregard for legitimate and valid court orders.

“We expect President Buhari to know that democracy cannot survive without respect for the constitution, strict adherence to the rule of law, and separation of powers as enshrined in the constitution.

“We note that the attempt to drag the CJN to the CCT is also a grave and dangerous escalation of the assault on institutions of state, including the National Assembly and the judiciary

“We believe that the President, Muhammadu Buhari, has a constitutional responsibility and huge moral obligation to defend our democracy.

“We consider this step, which is directly aimed at humiliating the nation’s highest judicial officer and a prominent son of the region as totally unacceptable as it is reflective of the South-South story of endless marginalisation and intimidation.

“The unceremonious removal of former Acting Director-General of the Department of State Service, Matthew Seiyefa, and his replacement is still very fresh.

“We strongly believe that the regrettable development at the Supreme Court at this critical time, when preparations for the general elections are wobbling (with serious concern about Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies) is capable of causing avoidable anxiety, tension and possible breakdown of law and order in the country.

“We note further that the action undermines confidence not only in the judiciary but also the electoral process that has already commenced, in view of the pivotal role the judiciary plays in the process of electoral adjudication.

They urged Onnoghen to ignore the court summon from the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, and the provocative call for his resignation in some quarters.

https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Amaechi.jpeg

The Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, has told Nigerians complaining about hunger in the land that he himself is hungry.

He said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party caused the hunger in the land by stealing money from the nation’s purse while in power.

Amaechi said this at the APC presidential campaign rally which was held in Bauchi on Saturday.

He urged Nigerians to demand that the PDP return the nation’s stolen money.

The former Rivers State governor also claimed that the opposition was broke and hungry.

He said that was why the party wanted to return to power by all means.

Amaechi said, “I was speaking to my friend from the other divide and he said you are hungry, I said ‘yes, if they did not steal the money they stole, you would have had enough food.’

“The money they stole is what is making me hungry. Tell them, to bring the money.

“The PDP stole $2bn to prosecute 2015 elections but we still defeated them. They are broke, they are hungry and they want to come back to steal.

“The PDP members know that they are broke and because of that, they are looking for cheap source of funds.

“When they say there is no food, they want to steal money and they cannot do that because the President has said that public money is not for any individual.”

The minister of transportation wondered what the PDP did with the money it got for 16 years when oil was $114 per barrel.

He claimed that when the PDP was in power, he could not sleep with his two eyes closed even in the Rivers State Government House allegedly because of security challenges.

He said the situation had changed under Buhari.

The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said President Muhammadu Buhari knew how to catch thieves “and that is why the thieves have all gone to the PDP but even if they go to the PDP, they must be arrested.”

PoliticsIGP Idris Appoints Tinubu’s Ex-cso, Egbetokun, As Acting Lagos CP by akinhanger(op): 8:59pm On Jan 13, 2019
The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has directed Mr. Kayode Egbetokun to take over from erstwhile Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, as the Acting Police Commissioner in the state.

Sources said Edgal has been directed to take charge of the Explosives and Ordinance Disposal Unit at the Force headquarters, Abuja.

It could not be immediately ascertained if Egbetokun, who was former Chief Security Officer to former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, would be made the substantive CP.

The new acting Lagos Police boss was the CP in charge of Explosives and Ordinance unit.

He also supervised the Osun governorship election in Ikire town, where a number of buses and motorcycles were seized for violating the restriction of movement during the poll.

A source said, “The redeployment of Egbetokun to Lagos was part of the Police operational strategies ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“You will recall that a number of senior Police officers, including Command Commissioners of Police, were redeployed in the past few weeks, which the Force headquarters has deliberately not made public, contrary to the usual practice.”

Our correspondent had reported exclusively last week that the Force had been carrying out a massive redeployment of senior officers across the country.

Findings indicate that the Police leadership had, in the past weeks, redeployed the CPs in Zamfara, Edo, Ekiti, Imo and Bauchi Commands ahead of the polls holding next month.

This is coming against the backdrop of the expected retirement of the IG, who would clock 60 years on Tuesday.

Egbetokun was a Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1999 when he was appointed the CSO to then Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and in that capacity coordinated the security of the entire state while reporting to the governor.

He served as the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos, Squadron Commander, Mopol 5, Benin, Benin City, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Fraud Unit, FCT Command, Abuja, Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Lagos State Command Head Quarters, Ikeja, Area Commander, Osogbo, Osun State Command and Area Commander, Gusau, Zamfara State Command, among others.

Egbetokun graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, with Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in June 1987 and lectured Mathematics briefly at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, before his enlistment into the Police Force.

His other academic qualifications include MSC Engineering Analysis, also from the University of Lagos, Akoka, 1996, Post-Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, 2000, and an MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo, 2004.

National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Tuesday assured President Muhammadu Buhari of working with him ahead of the February Presidential election.

Tinubu, who is the co-chair of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, accepted the assignment, saying he will work for the country.

Buhari had yesterday handed over his re-election campaign to Tinubu while inaugurating the APC Presidential Council, at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja, on Monday.

Reacting, Tinubu assured the President that the council would not let him down “because doing so would also let down the nation”.

In a statement he personally signed and sent to , the former Lagos State governor rallied members of the campaign council with the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Director-General, for the task ahead.

In a statement entitled “We Accept President Buhari’s Assignment,” Tinubu said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, should not be allowed to return to power and “return to the days where they rule the nation like overlords.”

He said the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar wasted the national treasury for eight years he was in power.

The statement reads: “The 2019 APC Presidential Campaign Council has been inaugurated by President Buhari. In his speech at the inaugural meeting, he did more than offer us guidance on the campaign. In his straightforward manner, he outlined the achievements of his administration, reminding the nation of the pillars of progressive governance and of our party.

“I think I can speak for all members of the campaign council that we accept the assignments given by the President with devotion and a firm commitment to perform to our utmost the individual and collective tasks given. It is a great honor and responsibility he has given us. We dare not let him down because doing so would also let down the nation.

“This election concerns more than two competing personalities and political parties. It is a contest between two different visions for the country and the futures these visions portend. The APC seeks a better Nigeria by reforming our institutions of governance that these institutions may better implement policies engendering dynamic economy development. We seek not only growth but also a fair and just allocation to all segments of society of the harvest of our national endeavors. Let no Nigerian be forever trapped in poverty and despair. Let all Nigerians be given the genuine opportunity to realize their full potential and contribute to this nation and their own lives as much as their talents and willpower permits of them.
We build a Nigeria where government leads the nation but does not rule over the people.

“On the other hand, the PDP pushes toward a future that takes the nation back to the malpractices of the past. Blind to the possibilities of a better day and afraid of the equality that true reform will bring, the PDP remains vested in the ways of corrupt governance and arrogant disregard for the public. For them, the unjust past is not just the object of their dreams; it is their sole destination.

“Thus, this election is about two different policy visions and two different models of leadership. This election is about substantive issues and about character.
The APC will continue to build a political economy that will well serve Nigeria long after oil revenues are no longer sufficient to sustain the nation and its ever-growing population. We are diversifying the economy, giving basic food, health and educational assistance to the most needy among us, improving agricultural productivity so that our farmers grow more to feed for increasing urban populations and also earn more to sustain their families, and about building needed infrastructure, including electricity and water, because we realize a national economy cannot grow beyond the capacity of the infrastructure that serves that economy.

“Meanwhile, the PDP clan wants to return to the days where they rule the nation like overlords. They want to own every industry and control everything that has anything to do with the creation of wealth. They seek to reverse the democratic maxim that government is the servant of the people. The PDP wants a situation where those in government are the masters while the people bow their heads to the interests of the mighty and the rich. We have seen this before.
Those who really care about Nigeria care not to see such malign governance again.

“The character of the two candidates cannot be more distinct. President Buhari is a straight and honest man. Leave a naira on the table with Buhari in the room. You will find the naira on the table when you return.

“When Buhari says “yes” or “no,” you know where he stands. He means what he says, no more, no less. With Atiku things are more nuanced. When Atiku speaks, he may mean “yes,” “no,” “maybe,” I don’t know,” “come back tomorrow,” “all the above,” or “none of the above.” His compass has four needles pointing in different directions as the same time. He knows of no direction to take. President Buhari’s word is his bond. When Atiku speaks, it is to give you the slip.

“We cannot afford a President whose ways and mind is a maze of contradicting urges and colliding desires. This shows he has no vision for the nation and no guiding principles except the naked pursuit of power for the naked use of that power. Atiku had his chance to shine as VP when he controlled the privatization program of the Obasanjo government. He abused this assignment. He helped squander billions of dollars on power generation that did nothing but extend our national the darkness.

“That government had so much money at its disposal and that is exactly what it did. It disposed of the money yet failed to treat the poor or build for the future. Atiku laid waste to the national treasury for eight long years. That is enough for one lifetime. We should not reward him by giving him another eight years because the more he feeds, the stronger his hunger grows.

“His is a thirst that can’t be quenched and a hand that cannot be restrained from taking whatever is on the table. As the PDP candidate, he is now the leader of a avaricious horde that seeks to reattach its mandible once again to the public wealth and forever lay siege to our nation’s future. Nigerians would do well not to pay them any attention.

“Consequently, the members of the APC presidential campaign council accept our respective assignments as both high honor and heavy responsibility. We will work diligently to reelect President Buhari. We do this not for personal accolades. We do this not merely to reelect a party member. We do this because it is the best thing for Nigeria.”

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday came down hard on some motorists who drove against traffic along the Muritala Mohammed Airport Road in Ikeja.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Habib Aruna on Tuesday, the governor decried the flagrant abuse of the State Traffic Laws.

Ambode who was returning from Abuja where he had attended an event apprehended a Nigerian Army personnel who drove a space bus with registration number JJJ 290 AC.

On sighting the vehicle, he alighted from his car and reprimanded the officer for “showing a bad example” contrary to what the Nigeria Army is known for.

The governor reprimanded another offender who drove a saloon car with registration number LSR 445 ER, for breaking the law regardless of the dangers involved in driving against traffic.

He condemned the manner at which some motorists drive ‘one way’ to beat the traffic along the Nigerian Air force Base inward International Airport Road in the Ikeja axis.

Governor Ambode, thereafter, ordered the immediate seizure of the vehicles and directed that the offenders be prosecuted in line with the provisions of the traffic laws on the state.

President Muhammadu Buhari says he will take action on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, soon.

Buhari said this during an interview aired on Arise TV which was monitored by our correspondent.

There have been growing demands for the IG, who has reached the retirement age of 60, to step aside.

However, there have been speculations that the President is considering extending his tenure till after the elections.

When asked his next line of action, Buhari burst into laughter, mocking those who had threatened to take action against him if he refused to sack Idris.

He, however, said he was not afraid of the IG and would take a decision soon.

The President said, “I don’t think I am afraid of him. And I don’t think I have asked him to mount roadblocks in place such that I’ll lose revenue (if he goes). But I’ll take action.”

Buhari, however, said removing service chiefs or the IG during a time of insecurity is a sensitive matter.

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians not to re-elect governors who failed in their first terms, especially those who failed to pay civil servants salaries even after collecting bailouts from the federal government.

Mr Buhari, who is also seeking reelection on the platform of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), said Nigerians’ votes should go for competence.

Mr Buhari, who spoke with the Hausa service of the Voice of America, which was aired Tuesday morning, said he saw no justification in governors collecting bailout funds from the federal government and still failing to pay wages.

The president was quoted as saying, “I wonder how these governors are able to sleep knowing that they have refused to pay workers their wages.

“These workers have families to cater for, they pay rent, pay school fees, Hospital bills and food for their families.”

Mr Buhari said the Nigerian Constitution gives governors the independence to spend their funds without interference and that is why some are abusing that privilege by refusing to work for the people.

The president advised Nigerians to use their voting rights to make sure that they only vote for people who would deliver.

On the fight against corruption being undertaken by his administration, the president said unlike before, he now uses democratic means.

He said being democratic in fighting corruption is slow but assured that the objectives will eventually be achieved.
