okey.

I remember in camp, i was invited to an anointing service

and i talked deeply with one of the organisers.

i asked what the purpose was.

he said, impartation for good placement and jobs, also security.

i told him i will try to make it, but i couldnt.

It just didnt seat well with me.
Generally in the church, there is an over-emphasis on things that are not of eternal value.

And then a lot of Christians are either lazy or have completely missed it. It is not the 'big prayer' of a man of God that is the final solution. The word of God is always the final solution. And every believer has the same rights and privileges in the word.

I was taught that

If you take the communion and you werent born again

you are in danger of becoming sick, which also may lead to death
I think its part of taking the cup unworthily. The reasoning may be that since the person doesnt have the benefits of our Lord's death, s/he cant judge against that backdrop.

Anointing with oil

This is one of the controversial aspects of Christianity and here's what I think.

In the bible, oil was used most of the time in the Old Testament, under the Mosaic law. One of it's important functions was to anoint (literarilly) Kings and Priests and co.

In the New Testament, we are not under the law but under grace. This does not mean anointing oil is of no good to us. But the New Testament is practically silent on its use except in:

Mark 6:13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
and
Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

So in the New Testament, oil is used only to heal the sick. But I'd like us to note two things: 1. Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. This is part of the Great Commission Jesus gave to the 11 disciples and us by extension. And I think this should be used more frequently for healing the sick than oil because 2. In James 5:14, the instruction is for elders of the church alone. And if you look at the next verse, you would notice that it is the Prayer of Faith that actually heals the sick, not the oil alone.

Hence, outside healing the sick, I don't believe anointing oil serves any purpose. There are those who pour oil on their cars for protection, pens for exam success, houses for protection, pets, etc. I think all that is abuse.

But I may be wrong, is anyone willing to show me something else from scripture?

Feet washing

John 13
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

For one thing, I know that this incident displays the humility of Jesus in a very remarkable way. If it were to be one of us, the knowledge that all things are in our hands (including our disciples) would make us demand for our feet to be washed. But as usual, God's thoughts are higher than ours, His ways are higher than ours as far as the heavens are above the earth.

Thats why He rebuked Peter: 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Jesus must have felt greatly insulted that Peter would reject such a noble gesture. To make us understand this better, lets look at it like as if it were the other way round; if you were the boss and one of your disciples refused to wash your feet, you would freak out wouldn't you?

Washing of feet is generally an old tradition and I dont think when Jesus says we should do likewise, He expects us to literarily wash each others feet. But He does expect us to engage in acts of humility that would be of benefit to everyone around us, especially those who are sceptical (Peter), and those who do not mean good for us (Judas, he had already thought of betraying Jesus!, Matt 13:2.

Ok here's part 2 about taking the communion unworthily:

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Okay here's how I was taught this growing up. Basically the body that was broken and the blood that was shed are what makes our redemption and salvation possible. So if a person is found guilty of this like the scripture says, it means s/he has not taken full advantage of what Jesus did.

Thus in order not to take the cup unworthily, we ought to judge (not condemn) ourselves against what the bible reveals are the things that the body and blood of Jesus (His death basically) make available to us e.g. freedom from sin. If found wanting, you should repent and determine ask God for mercy to make you better.

Any other/contrary thoughts?
