Nairaland / General / Nigerian Elected First Black Female President Of Harvard Law Review by akonamone(m): 9:32pm On Jan 31, 2017
Nigerian student, Imelme Umana, who hails from Akwa Ibom state, has become the first black woman to be elected President of Harvard’s Law Review.

The announcement was made on Sunday via the Twitter account of Harvard Law School’s black law students’ association.

She has emulated the former US President Barack Obama who became the first black man elected as Harvard Law Review’s president in 1990.

Umana, who graduated from Harvard College in 2014, is a doctorate candidate at Harvard law school.

She has served as chair of the community action committee and is also a board member of the Harvard model congress Boston.

Umana is a research assistant at the school’s hip-hop archive at the Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research.

Umana is a Ph. D candidate who is “interested in the intersection between government and African American studies by exploring how stereotypes of black women are reproduced and reinforced in American political discourse,” Clutch reports.

In 2013, Umana worked as a criminal law investigative intern for the public defender’s office in Washington, D.C, US.

The Harvard Law Review president is elected by the editorial board of the independent, student-run publication, which was founded in 1887.

Nairaland / General / Nigeria My Foot! by akonamone(m): 3:10pm On Mar 03, 2011
Yes Nigeria my foot indeed! i am currently studying in the USA, i have seen the way things are done here and it makes me feel that Nigeria is a big joke!. During the course of my studies, i saw the need to transfer to another program, another school in the US. And so i had to request the so called mighty University of Lagos to send my transcript to my choice of schools. Nairalanders, that request was made exactly on the 21st of December 2010, anyway after almost two months UNILAG finally sent the transcript on the 14th of Feb 2011, now the school requires UNILAG to send a verification by E-MAIL. Today is the 3rd of march and UNLAG cant send a SIMPLE email to confirm that they sent the results can you imagine that?. When i call there is so much incompetency and mix up, the last time i called they swore that the have sent the email, but still my school send they have not received anything, i called UNILAG this morning and they have changed their story, they say they never got any email requesting for a verification. Meanwhile, a request for my transcript from my present school, took only ONE DAY, i was called the next day after applying to come pick it up.

What is wrong with Nigeria, my are we one billion years behind the rest of the world? why, why and why? I feel i should never ever return to that country!

@ Godpikin congrats man! ur interview was just so hilarious! Abeg send me your email or phone number, im going to Univ of North Florida- make we know as we go fly 9ja flag high for dem yakees!!

To all those scheduled to have their interview, somehow think of something that will divert the consular out of the interview on a lighter mood but at the same time try to be ingenious about it, like on my case i scheduled my interview on my birthday, and then the consular asked me how old i was and i told him i was 27 today, he wished me a happy birthday and the rest of what he asked was just to make it look like t'was an interview afterall.

But most of all, place all your trust and hope in the Almighty God, cos really na only Him fit deliver!!!

Nairalanders, here is how it went; there were three screenings before the consular officer. At the final screening, our passports and receipts of payment were taken from us. If you were going for an F1 like I was, then your I-20 and SEVIS receipt will be collected. Then we were back to the waiting line for the interview. There were three consular officers, one mean, one very extremely nice lady, and one just in the middle guy. I prayed for the nice lady, but got the just in the middle guy, ladies and gentlemen, it will shock u but this was how it went;

Consular- Hello
Me- Goodafternoon with a smile

Consular- What are you going to the US for?
Me - to study.

Consular – What are you going for?
Me – Masters in public health

Consular – Where?
Me – Florida

Consular – Where? Where?
Me – Sorry University of North Florida

Consular – why this school
Me- well, I considered the weather in florida which is somewhat similar to the weather in Nigeria, I also considered research topics, accreditation and its affordability.

Consular – did you Apply to other schools?
Me – yes, I named them

Consular – Why did you choose those schools.
Me – stammering, well, well, mainly also because of the research topics and in essence a combination of the other factors I mentioned earlier.

Consular – What was your undergraduate course in?
Me - Biochemistry

Consular – Where did you get that?
Me – University of Lagos

Consular – Where do your work?
Me- I am not working at the moment (Very risky thing to say)

Consular – Well did you work before?
Me – Yes I worked in the bank (Another dangerous thing to say considering my undergrad course and the MPH I am going for) and also in a pharmaceutical company (well related to discipline sha)

Consular – What does your father do?
Me – He is a senior lecturer in at the University of Lagos.

Consular – How old are you?
Me – I will be 27 today, oh sorry I am 27 today (perfect and intentional strategy)

Consular – Ok happy birthday
Me – thanks

Consular – How are you gonna pay for your curriculum
Me – My father and my brother, (while speaking at the same time reaching for my file to bring out statements.

Consular – cuts me in, please go to this address on wednessday and pick up your visa
Me – thank you sir

Consular – And enjoy your party tonight.
Me – too excited to respond

If you noticed I did not even open my file, did not present any statements, GRE or TOEFL, or transcripts. Infact my file was useless; I could have left it at home.
My case was sorted out by God over a year ago, when I got accepted to my school, after over 17 applications to different schools. People na Baba God do am, and the birthday joker I think. But it was just Gods favor.

Big thanks to everyone on this thread for all your contributions, and to those that haven’t gone for their interviews, the name of the game is JUST BELIEVE, wishing y’all the best.

Just to clear the house, i am not a staff of the bank, neither do any of my relatives work for the Bank. But my curiosity on the topic is borne out of the manner at which people troupe into their banking halls to transact business. I was at three of their branches today and it was hectic!! While their neighbours (Other banks on the same street) had fewer customers. This is not the first time i noticed this. House what is ur take?
