cc Alabo7978 *Alapu buoye-omuso *Alapu Bristol (of the Bristol house of the direct line of Alagbiriye) * Alapu agbaa fubara * Alapu Tolofari Etc,,, This chieftaincy title or houses are of the Duawari's (original founding house) and are styled as Aseme-alapu. These chiefs and houses are not the ones related to the free Igbo slaves. INDIGENES of the Duawari's can become Amayanabo They are the most powerful and influential chiefs and the king isn't bestowed with power to influence them. They can even dethrone the king if there is a good reason to. Tell me thank you for the knowledge. |

Politics › The Akassa Raid; on this day 29th January 1895 by Alabo7978(op): 12:31pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
The 127th anniversary of the akassa raid; an event which was one of the earliest known fight for resource control in the ancient town of Nembe, an ijoid kingdom in Bayelsa state Nigeria. It was on the 29th day of January 1895 the nembe-brass people decided that dieng by the sword is better than dieng of hunger. This was as a result of trade monopoly in the Niger which was claimed under Royal charter by the royal Niger company for the British crown. This went on to limit the trading and commercial activities of the Nembe people who like other coastal settlers since the primitive days are affiliated with the water bodies and tend to rely greatly on it for trading. The royal Niger company went as far as to seize, molest, shoot and kill any Nembeian and seize their trading canoes when found on this water ways even lower down the southern ijo markets and even further into the creeks of akassa clan which leads towards the twon-brass river. Amayanabo(king) William Fredrick Koko (mingi VIII) being the principal king over all the brass region 1853-1898 invited the kings and chiefs from Nembe (ogbolomabiri), Bassambiri, twon and okpoama on a general meeting to agree on what must be done. They then unanimously agreed that to die by the sword is better than dieng of starvation. This was how the headquarters of the royal niger company at akassa was raised on the morning of the 29th day of January 1895. Several clerk and kroo boys were killed, and their heads were taken back to Nembe as war trophies. Many royal Niger company workers and navy were captured and taken over to isikara(a sacred sacrifice island) to be sacrificed and eaten ceremoniously. There were only five casualties on the side of Nembe; one from chief Felix smoke amabebe war canoe, one from chief Akemegha Dogu war canoe who was one of his sons, one from the war canoe of chief Daniel kalango, and two from chiefs Debi and Igula who were chiefs from okpoama town. The damages done to the royal Niger company couldn’t be estimated as several furnitures, dollars, guns, clothings, ornaments were looted. 28 of the captors were later released by the chiefs whom were Christians, namely; chief Uriah Cameron, chief Christopher warri, chief Nathaniel yekorogha, chief Willam sambo etc. In consequence of this raid, a punitive expedition was sent out by the oil Niger protectorate under the leadership of admiral Bedford on the 20th of February 1895. A canoe was stationed at kalabiema Kiri (creek) to keep watch and to warn the Nembe troops with a Canon shot signal. By the time the British navy got to monkey island, the whole town was under commotion as King William Fredrick Koko ordered that all chiefs go out with their war canoes to defend the kingdom. The fighting was so intense but the Nembe navy retreated following the explosion on chiefs Gam Dede and okoko oruwari war canoes which left several people dead or at best wounded. The war canoe of oruwari sank to the bottom of the river. There were great casualties on both sides but that of the Nembe fleets were greater. The battle which lasted for three days saw the storey buildings of chiefs Joseph Alagoa, Daniel opuene, Thomas adda-spiff, Bonnie igbeta destroyed, only the storey building of the king’s predecessor Amayanabo Josiah Constantine(mingi VII) was spared by the Brits.

The very beautiful thing about the ijaw/ijoid speaking tribes is that they are united more than any other Ethnic group in Nigeria. I recall Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's open statement during the boundary tussle between one of the Calabari sub-clans and Nembe. It was rumoured President Jonathan favoured one over the other, but he came out to make an open statement not to Nigeria but to his ETHNICITY making clear their oneness. He said he wouldn't want any of his ijo brethren to pitch him against another ijo brethren. From the east to the west and even a little towards the hinterlands, the Ijaw people are one and not divided.
So wether you nairaland miscreants come online to say trash, it's left for you because your trash is just like a termite trying to disintegrate an igneous rock. Our culture is rich and beautiful, our history is one full of pride and accomplishments. |

Xbobtage: Stop inventing stories to suite your skewed narrative and ill intentions.
You have it mixed up. But to educate others I'll help you out. Ijoid klans are some of the last to settle in Nigeria. With the latest resettlement for example being Kalabari to the new and current location in the late 19th century, today they will be calling that Kalabari Land ijaw land whereas the people just moved there less than 150 years ago.
The Annang/Ibibio/Efik People are older to the location than Ijaw people, so how can they be the eroding the local language when they were there earlier. It would also interest you to know that the arochukwu people and a good number of todays abians are actually annang people. The biggest Shrine in igboland during the slave trade era was the Ibini Ukpabi shrine which is an annang/ibibiod/Efik word, and the Annang people are still the kings to this day in Arochukwu.
Obololand was a major slave and slave trader depot for slaves enroute to bonny. The slave traders were Annang/ibibio/Efik, Ijaw, ogoni and ibo and the slaves were mostly ibo. The mixture of these languages is what formed the creation of the Andoni tribe. That is why today if an Ibo man listens to the Obolo man speak. he can find a lot of similar words to igbo just like people who speak Annang/Ibibio/Efik would understand a lot as well. The least input into the Obolo culture and language are the now defunct defraka people who were ijoid.
The Obolo people are a Hybrid clan, a fusion of people who were the most active in the ruling class of the Aro Confederacy which Ijaw was part of but was headed by Annang,ibibio/Efik and Ibo people. Now no one is saying that the their is nothing ijawish about the Obolo People, there are ijaw traits but its the least compared to the other tribes. How can the people with the least trait come and claim the entire land as theirs.
It would interest you to know that the Obolo people also have small traits of Benin origin. Imagine if the Benin people came to claim the whole land as Benin territory.
Mind you as we write, at least 80 percent of Obolo people do not know that their people are being claimed to be Ijaw people online otherwise their WILL be Backlash.
I called my tenant who is an Obolo woman to ask if she is an Ijaw woman and her response was "God forbid". I told her about this article and I believe she will be coming here to put an input. I am sure there is nothing wrong with being Ijaw, Ijaw people are people just like you have anywhere else, But when your people want to Name your new country Ijaw republic and then erase other peoples tribe and languages, that is WRONG!
Even that map is setting you people for a major war with Akwaibom, Igbo and even my clan Ogoni people. Like I said, everyone will always want to maintain a level of Independence and answer their first name first. Ask the Obolo people were their first home was. Five of the six ancient divisions of the old Nembe does not exist anymore as they have been assimilated into what is now known as Nembe. Every Obolo man knows of a dispersion from part of what is now known as Nembe. Ask the old ones. Even many ijoid clans have some element of Benin in them. Some families in Nembe trace their ancestry to iselema-warri, some trace their families to Benin, but for hundreds of years they have now been assimilated and speak the ijoid Language of Nembe. So bro, I don't have time for long argument, I even only scanned through your long rant. |

JoeArmsD1: I'm not saying what I don't know cos I have interacted with them and for the bolded, Ogbia language don't in any way have any Ijoid relationship; in between, Ogbia speaks Edoid language.
Ogbia people have always told the Ijaws that they weren't related or should be classified as Ijaws, they're Ogbia and remain Ogbia.
About Nembe speaking Ijoid language, You and I know for sure that you can't hear them speak and their lingua is no way related and no similarity of culture even.
An Epie man told me that the govt are forcing them to learn Ijaw by compulsion.
The same thing an Ogbia man told me. Bro I am Nembe. We call God Ayiba Ogbia calls God Aziba. We say "nua" as thank you. Ogbia say "Lua" as thank you.. etc Say what you know bro. Everyone like to claim independent even Nembe where I come from, that's because those entities were important and powerful on their own during the precolonial days, but we all speak an ijoid Language. |

Xbobtage: Look! your people have added my community and are calling it an Ijaw clan, Everyone of age in Rivers state knows that we have been fighting Kalabari and Okrika people for generations. I am an ogoni Man, we have nothing in common with Ijaw people in language and cultural structure. Till today in Rivers state, our people are not allowed to intermarry with Rivers Ijaws and you come out here with your fraudulent map and call our people Ijaw people?
Let me also tell you that Obolo People are not Ijaw people, everyone in rivers state knows that. The majority of them about 70% bear akwa ibom sounding names. Out of the remaining 30 percent 20 percent bear igbo names and the remaining ijoid names. You people went and grabbed one of the very few people bearing an ijoid name in western obolo and made him IYC president, so that you people can draw this map and claim lands as far away as ibeno.
I was having a conversation with an elder statesman, a traditional title holder from Obolo land who clearly said that Obolo people are not ijaw people rather identify with Ijaws through the INC to gain traction for similar struggles on the national stage. Obolo people are of annang, obibio, ibo and defraka(ijaw) origin. How can people from Brass come and claim the entire land as their own?
Please wake Up! Stop accusing ibo people of what your people are trying to do. Dont start drawing lines and making false boundary claims. Alot of the indigenes of the communities you have added in your map would laugh loudly if someone called them Ijaw in person. The obolo or Obolobolo people are ijoid. there was an ancient dispersal following a spiritual plague hundreds of years ago. Obolobolo use to be part of the ancient six divisions or quaters which made up the old Nembe. (Oboloamabiri, Opubigamabiri, kalabigamabiri, olodioamabiri, onyoamabiri, Oroamabiri) the dispersion made them to scatter and many of them went and found the present Obolo and also retaining the name. some went to kalabari, some to okrika, others were merged into the other settlements. after a long while a small batch led by one Kala-ekule returned. the reason they are somewhat ibibio-like is because of the ibibio influence over the many generations that followed. same with the ijaws of ondo who have the Yoruba element in them. |

JoeArmsD1: Even Bayelsa State is not entirely an Ijaw nation. There are Ogbia, Epie, Attissa, Ijaw, Nembe and Urhobo in Bayelsa.
Ijaws are forcing the entire state to be categorized as Ijaw state; Epie and Ogbia has been very vocal that they weren't Ijaws.
Ijaw nation is even dead cos they aren't one people but an assemblage of various ethnic nationalities.
Imagine Ijaws claiming Bonny and Opobo as Ijaws? ogbia speak an ijoid Language. some settlements in Attisai speak an ijoid Language very closely related to Nembe. a creek is navigated between both areas. though there are other elements in Epie and attissa like the edoid people but there are also ijo people too. before you say what you don't know, always go to a place and ask so that you can be sure. |

And in conclusion, the city states prior to the europeans didn't bare kings that's true, Priests (pere) were the rulers/spiritual custodians.
Some clans still maintain and call their rulers (pere)
That is the reason why you said AMAYANABO isn't the only ruling title. We also have Pere (priest)
I will forgive the part you said Nembe which is my place is Igbo speaking because if you go their to make that statement, the beating you'll receive you'll be lucky to come back alive. Paisise don't utter that statement again, you're not an obori-nama

ThickSharon123: Lol, Bonny and Opobo is Ijaw yet Amayanabo is not used in most Bayelsa towns, except for the towns which have Igbo Origin, for example, Nembe. It isn't even used in central Ijaw area which is Delta, the origin of Ijaws. To add, Igbo system isn't monarchial, all these titles like Eze, Igwe and the likes were introduced. Even the Amayanabo of Bonny and Opobo was just an enterprise in that period to sell slaves and palm oil to the British. Bonny and Opobo began as a business enterprise and wasn't intended to conquer or have empires at its feet. So this Amayanabo you're bringing or you Ijaws seem to bring everyday isn't like the King's of England's concept, where it's a pure monarchy whies interest is to have slaves and empires that it selfishly feeds from.
That said, Stop being silly, everyone, even Bonny themselves know their Igbos, they can call themselves what they like, perhaps, "I'm bonny and not Ijaw or Igbo" but they speak pure unadulterated southern Igbo language, which is hearable to many Igbo people in the south.
You Ijaws are being silly, western Ijaws can't understand Eastern Ijaws, then they decided to add Ndoki, becuase they know if they can get the brothers and sisters of Bony and Opobo, then they have them to their grasp. How do you intend to make a tribe with many tongues? What is Ijaws definition of a tribe. You say it's ancestry.
But Crow and the likes predating to pre-colonial history has ironed that out, but you guys are numb now and I'm thankful you people are now realising how you've been fooled by Alagoa himself.
Bonny and Opobo do not only have Igbo ancestry but, they speak Igbo and practice most of their cultures.
Lastly, to add, it isn't every tribe you find in the coast that are Ijaws. I've heard some news which says the Oron of Akwa Ibom are Ijaws. This isn't good, you'll simply make the southerners suspicious of your interest. You guys have no backing to ancestry or history of these tribes you claim but end up cleaning them becuase Ijaws believe all water bodies in this contraption called Nigeria are meant for them. Lol, It is finished. You just called my own city state "Nembe" Igbo origin? Oh my God You see why I say you're daft? Again you called Delta State central ijaw. If this is a joke, stop it. Central ijaw clans are Nembe and akassa. It was even categorized by linguist and researchers like Gerrit Dimmendaal, Kay Williamson, Roger blench etc. Look at the first screenshot. Look I'm taking it lightly with you because you're a foreigner who probably don't know. You also say we do not understand ourselves? That is the most stupidest, silliest statement borne out of ignorance. I as a Nembe guy can hear when okrika, calabari, ogbia, tarakiri and ekpetiama people speak. I will also show you prove from the second screenshot further down.

ThickSharon123: Feel as you wish. Your brain is small to comprehend dear. So stop trying. Ubani is just a social construct, just the same way you call an Igbo person Aro, Ezza, Orlu or you call an Orlu, Ezza, Aro person an Igbo person? So keep to yourself.
Igbo is just an intelligeble language known by all. Just the same way the Igbanni or Ibani or Ubani people who were said to be coastal Igbos and their neighbours knew Igbos well and called them the word Igbanni or Ibani.
(To add, most clans in the Igbo state didn't call themselves Igbo, it was democratic as you know, so every one called themselves in their city states. )
If you read Crows and the likes books, Ibani or Ubani was aptly stated that it was an Igbo word which the coastal Igbos and it's people used for the upland igbos, and the Upland Igbos called their coastal kin the same word, Igbanni. Read books so you can learn, okay.
Nonetheless, Igbanni, Ibani or Ubani was made for the coastal Igbos by Igbos themselves. That's what they often called them. Read Crows or Glynn's and the likes book to get a grasp of it. And stop reading the liar, Alagoa. He has no basis whatsoever, but giving your community pure ficitonal stories. It was the Bonny people that called the hinterlanders igbinni because they were a people living in the thick forests with alot of cash crops. And yes people in those days answer by Their city states etc but they all trace their ancestry to a source. Bonny is Igbo yet they call their kings AMAYANABO, their chiefs are called Alabo instead of Igwe or Eze and ichie. Lol.. We've been through this before.. ThickSharon123: Hi!
Well, I've been on social media for a long while now, and I've been seeing this Ijaw nationalism on claiming their lost lands from God knows who.
Ubani people, who are the Bonny and Opobo clearly speak Igbo, I'll love you dear, Nairalanders to head to the land yourself and check out things yourself. None of them speak low of themselves, they utter the language in their full right. But Ijaw wouldn't make these individuals rest, they are forcing them to speak the Ibani language by force by fire.
And do you know what? Do you know Ibani isn't an Ijaw dialect, it's pure Kalabari, but Ijaws love attaché.
Now, here is my sympathy for today, if you're Opobo or Bonny, be proud of who you are as an Ubani or Ibani person. No Igbos ever conquered you nor were Igbo slaves brought into the land to decimate or eliminate the fictional Ijaw culture.
Don't let Ijaw intimidate you becuase they've got the power to supervise the oil proceeds in the south. So, one word that you are this or that, then you're exited.
Don't let your forefathers squirm in their graves and curse the land becuase you allowed Ijaws belittle and initmaidate you easily.
Ever wondered when your forefathers were alive, that you never heard Ijaws in history books and all? Well, here is the simple answer, Ijaws were bomboys then, helpers or as Yoruba would call it Omodo. They listened to every beck and call of your father's.
Still stand with that integrity.
#Ijaws and their entire lineage are nothing to you Opobo and Bonny people. No correlation at all. In YOUR FIRST bolded quote, you said ubani(ibani) people (Bonny and Opobo) clearly speak igbo The second bolded is you saying Bonny is forced to speak IBANI; but forgetting the fact that you stated ON YOUR FIRST BOLDED WORDS that ubani/ibani people speak Igbo. Miss do you see the contradiction? You even went on to state; on the subsequent bolded trash that ibani(ubani) is a KALABARI DIALECT; also forgetting the fact you said the same ibani(ubani) speak Igbo. Smh, I can go on and on to fish out your dumbness in the stupid post you dropped but it's a new year so I'll let you continue in your st00piDT |
