By Tony Edike DISTURBED by the absence of a representative of Ndigbo in the National Working Committee, NWC, of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, after the removal of the former national chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ebonyi State chapter, has called for his immediate recall. The group said Nwodo remained the best option in search of who to fill the vacant position he was forced out of, stressing that “as leaders of Ndigbo youths, we find it unacceptable that the South East is not represented in the highest organ of the ruling party”. The Ohanaeze youth wing asked President Goodluck Jonathan to “recall how Nwodo put in all in his arsenal and defied powerful lobbies to shut him (Jonathan) out of the presidential race over zoning” and initiate moves to recall him immediately. Speaking to newsmen in Enugu, state youth president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Ebonyi State, Mazi Okemiri Alex, stated that since the crisis in the party had worsened, even after Nwodo was forced to quit, “it is now clear that if his reform programme had been allowed to take effect, the party would have been the better for it now. “It is now very clear that Nwodo meant well for the party as his reform package would have taken care of the acrimony now threatening the victory of the party at the polls.” Stating that “the time to recall him is now and not later”, the group contended that all Nwodo stood for in trying to open the gate of the party for those angling to come was exactly what President Jonathan was now preaching in calling for reconciliation and for aggrieved members to remain instead of leaving the party. Protesting the current state of affairs, he maintained that it was not acceptable to Ndigbo that another person from another zone would be allowed to occupy a sensitive position zoned to the South East “when the Igbo man who was removed gave a good account of himself as a man of integrity. “I am, therefore, on behalf of Igbo youths, calling on President Jonathan to recall Dr. Nwodo to office as the vacuum created by his exit has remained unfilled and the evidence is seen in the confusion in the party, where the party leadership is unable to solve any of the lingering problems.” The group further called on “Igbo leaders, especially those who are in PDP and continue to watch while Ndigbo are being sidelined wrongly to rise up now and reject this treatment to Nwodo while some others now in NWC who actually worked against the president are there now holding sway and pretending to be Jonathan’s friends”. They alleged that those who forced Nwodo to quit the exalted office are enemies of Ndigbo who actually saw the man’s profile rising as one of the voices of conscience for the nation as he strove to restore dignity and discipline to the ruling party. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/02/ohanaeze-demands-nwodos-reinstatement/ |
Media aide to Chief Olusegun Oni, former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Wale Ojo-Lanre, has described as despicable the statement made by former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, calling President Goodluck Jonathan a drun-ken fisherman. Ojo-Lanre, in a statement issued, on Wednesday, said: “By Tinubu’s statement, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its leaders have demonstrated that they are indeed rascals.” He said there were no other words with which people who emerged as governors through fraudulent means could be described other than rascals. He said: “with the uncouth reactions of Tinubu, the sole proprietor of the ACN, it has been justified that they are born propagandists and men of low integrity. “Yoruba people cherish their names. We cherish honest, upright and hardworking people, who are always conscious of their father’s name and won’t for any reason seek to achieve anything through dubious means. But can this be said of the so-called ACN leaders, Definitely no!” While urging President Jonathan not to be deterred by the outbursts of the ACN, Ojo-Lanre said, “President Jonathan has said the obvious, it is left for Tinubu and his hawks in the ACN to retrace their steps and begin to seek penitence.” http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17703-tinubu-has-proved-jonathan-right-onis-aide |
FOLLOWING last Saturday’s stampede at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, which led to the death of many party supporters during the launch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South presidential campaign, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered a special training for security agents in crowd control to avert similar incidents in future. He gave the directive during Wednesday’s meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in the State House, Abuja. According to the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr Labaran Maku, who briefed State House Correspondents after the meeting, the president was determined to ensure that such cases did not recur anywhere in the country. The minister also revealed that FEC members paid tribute to those who lost their lives and survivors of the stampede and had officially commiserated with President Jonathan, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, families of the victims, the government and people of Rivers State and the South-South geopolitical zone in general. This followed a motion moved by Maku, who described the incident as tragic and a “sad ending in an otherwise an exemplary show of support by the people of South-South to your (President Jonathan) own presidential ambition.” The minister posited that the unfortunate occurrence “reminded us again that sometimes even at the best moments, the enemy is always lurking around. “The people of the South-South in that rally proved that indeed not only are they in total solidarity with Mr President and Vice-President in the forthcoming elections but who went the extra mile to bring out virtually all their people to show their solidarity. “And because of the level of crowd that massed in Port Harcourt, which is indeed an affirmation of the popularity of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the forthcoming elections, the unfortunate occurrence of the stampede led to loss of lives,” he said. The Minister of Information also disclosed that council had ratified approval for the variation of some contracts presented by the Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Somo Wya, in realisation of the need to increase power generation capacity. According to him, council ratified the National Independent Power Project (NIPP) Board of Directors’ approval for variation of the contract awarded for the construction of the 225 megawatts Gbarain Power Plant in favour of Messrs Rockson Engineering Ltd, in the sum of USD138, 675,122.20 to USD220, 101,976.79 payable at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment. He said the variation was necessary because of the requirement of the contractor to modify the design of the plant to accommodate four additional turbine units and combined cycle operation. Council also ratified the modification of the design of the construction of 338 mega watts Egbema Power Plant under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd, which was awarded in 2006. The request for modification was informed by the need to accommodate additional three gas turbines and combined cycle operation to raise expected generation capacity to 675mw. Consequently, council ratified the review of the contract from USD128, 366,751.74 to USD183, 021,115.37, in favour of Messrs Rockson Engineering Ltd/Rockson International Group at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment. Council similarly ratified the president’s anticipatory approval for the provision of consultancy services for the detailed engineering design and project management of the proposed 2,600mw Mambilla Hydro Electric power project in favour of Messrs Coyne et Bellier (in association with WADSCO & De Crown) in the sum of USD37, 220,067.72 with 87 months as completion period. Meanwhile, the Mambilla Power Project is to add about 2, 600mw to the National Grid by 2018 according to the Minister of State for Power. Wya told State House correspondents after FEC meeting on Wednesday that the approval of the Mambilla project was a major milestone in the history of power generation and distribution in the country. According to him, “this is a major milestone, which will give the one single project in the electricity sector a minimum of 2,600 mega watts of power, all coming from the same station. It will be a major milestone in the history of this country”. “That project has been on the drawing board and Mr. President has come out and held the bull by the horn and has now unravelled mystery behind Mambila. He has done all the studies that needed to be done. This time, he has commissioned a consultant to do the final detailed study, which will now enable any potential investor that will partner with the Federal Government to see this as a well crafted project because of its magnitude.” he stated http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17698-jonathan-orders-special-security-training-for-crowd-control |
FORMER presidents of the country and military heads of state may lose the life benefits approved last year, by the Senate for them, their wives and children. On the list also are Senate presidents, their deputies, speaker of the House of Representatives, their deputies and chief justices. The Senate had, last year, through the passage of a bill for an Act to provide remunerations for former presidents, heads of the federal legislative houses and chief justices of the federation, approved the benefits. The bill stipulated that members of the families of the deceased former presidents and vice-presidents would be entitled to annual payments, as shall be recommended by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and approved by the National Assembly and in manner as shall also be prescribed by the National Assembly. But, on Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs declined to lobby for funds for them in the 2011 budget. The chairman of the committee, Senator Smart Adeyemi, told officers from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who were in the National Assembly to defend their 2011 budget, that he could not defend the request. Senator Adeyemi’s refusal was hinged on the fact that past presidents did not deserve that treatment, because they were comfortable, while he insisted that they had “mismanaged Nigeria.” According to him, “my conscience will not allow me to champion it. The past leaders should sacrifice the perk for the development and employment which they failed to provide during their reigns. “Tell them to sacrifice. The hospitals have no drugs, the roads are bad, there is no electricity and most graduates are unemployed.” The Permanent Secretary in the office of the SGF, Mr Taiye Haruna, who represented the Head of Service, said former presidents were to be provided with a five-bedroom duplex within Nigeria; allowance for their staff, and three vehicle to be replaced every three years. He added that the former presidents are also to enjoy free medical treatment abroad and a luxurious treat whenever they are in Abuja. But Smart Adeyemi disclosed that “In a situation where there are a lot of unemployed graduates roaming the streets and threatening a revolution, rather than give this money to them, we should use it to generate employments.”. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17690-obj-ibb-abubakar-others-may-lose-life-benefits |
BARELY 24 hours after the Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) called on opposition political parties to gang up against the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming election, the presidential campaign of the party has warned Mallam Ciroma against making inflammatory statements that could derail the ongoing electoral process in the country. In a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Mallam Abba Dabo, in Abuja, on Wednesday, the party wondered why Mallam Ciro-ma, “a well-respected states-man, will associate himself with causes that were at variance with national interest.” The PDP, while acknowledging the role played by Mallam Ciroma in the formation and nurturing of the party, as well as his contributions to the national development over the decades, lamented that it found it strange that the elder statesman would involve himself in such a sectional pursuit of NPLF. According to the statement, “we are, indeed, at a loss as to what he hopes to achieve by openly calling for the destruction of a house he laboured so hard to build. “As a true democrat, we expect Mallam Ciroma to submit to the will of the majority as freely expressed at the last national convention which has been globally acclaimed for its transparency. “To continue holding tenaciously to divisive positions at a time the entire party and the nation are embarking on a process of healing and reconciliation does not speak well of his hard-earned reputation.” The party, however, advised Mallam Ciroma not to submit himself “to manipulations by non-PDP members of the NPLF, whose interest was to capture power through ignoble means. “It is our sincere wish that he reviews his current position quickly and avail his wise counsel to the Jonathan/Sambo ticket, which is the choice of the PDP, where he is a prominent member,” the party said. It will be recalled that the Ciroma-led NPLF had on Tuesday in Abuja, after a meeting, resolved to work against the candidature of President Jonathan, insisting that the northern region must produce the next president. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17686-watch-your-tongue |
