Business › Angry Trails Introduction Of Islamic Banking by aljharem3(op): 8:35pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
By CHIDI NKWOPARA, OWERRI Angry reactions have continued to trail the planned establishment of Islamic banking in Nigeria by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Reacting to the issue, the Imo State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Rev. Dr. Cosmas Ilechukwu said: “The idea of an Islamic banking in Nigeria is an impossible construct and an unmitigated effrontery to our constitutionally guaranteed secularity”. Imo CAN Chairman also warned that Ngeria is a secular state that allows different religious faith to pursue their religions without molestation, adding the country equally recognises and respects the multi-religiousity of her citizens. “It must be reiterated that Nigeria is not a multi-religious country but a secular one that recognises and respects the multi-religiousity of her citizens”, Rev. Dr. Ilechukwu reasoned. He further warned that “to allow Islamic banking in Nigeria is an invitation to chaos as other religious groups can also call for their preferred banking system”. Answering another question, Dr. Ilechukwu wondered if the CBN Governor is an Islamic cleric or a professional banker hired by the federal government to oversee the banking sector of the nation’s economy. “CAN demands that the federal government stop Sanusi from his religiously motivated divisive action disguised as banking reform. Nigeria is not an Islamic country and cannot accommodate Islamic banking”, Dr. Ilechukwu said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/angry-trails-introduction-of-islamic-banking/ |
Politics › South West Pdp Members Backs Aganga by aljharem3(op): 8:32pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
LAGOS—Following the oppositions that has trailed the nomination of Dr. Olusegun Aganga, the former Finance Minister, by President Goodluck Jonathan, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members from Lagos Island, held a peaceful demonstration, yesterday, in support of Aganga’s candidacy. The supporters defied the rain and carried placards with inscriptions urging the Presidency to re-appoint him because of his rich background in economic matters. Another group, led by Mr. Onipa Coker, a chieftain of Lagos PDP, urged the Presidency not to give in to pressure from mischief makers who are bent on discrediting the former Minister. Coker described the opposition of Aganga’s candidacy as the handi-work of mischief makers who do not have the interest of the nation at heart. In a statement signed by Messr Rasak Adeniji, Muyideen Oyekan, Ademola Kosoko, Mulikat Obanikoro and Abiodun Saheed, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore those opposing Aganga’s re-appointment describing them as disgruntled elements and enemies of Lagos State. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/06/pdp-members-back-agangas-nomination/ |
Sports › Sports Festival: Lagos Ready For 2012 Games – Fashola by aljharem3(op): 8:28pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
By Solomon Nwoke The Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola has declared that Lagos was ready to host the nation next year for the 18th National Sports Festival, which the state won the right to host. Making the declaration in Lagos during the send forth ceremony of the state contingent to the 2011 Garden City Games, Fashola said if it was possible to fastrack time, “Lagos is ready even now.” He pointed out that with the availability of standard sports facilities and the development of new ones, the state could host the country, anytime. “Lagos State is fully prepared to host the Games next year and with the facilities on ground we can host the tournament now,” he said. Fashola charged the state contingent to improve on their Kada 2010 performance so as to bring glory to the state. He also told journalists that the state was the first to de-emphasise the use of elite athletes at sports festival, saying, “that is the only way to bring out the best in the younger ones.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/sports-festival-lagos-ready-for-2012-games-fashola/ |

Onlytruth: Posted by: alj_harem "Nigerian factor" is a very broad term. If they meant that the civil war politics and fears arising from our past is hindering such Eastern agreement, then yes. If they meant other things like power etc, then no.
If anyone wants to duplicate Lagos in the East, they must understand that Lagos is a Western state and enjoys all support from all western states.
Anything in the East without similar regional understand will only stall. nigerian factor can only be attributed to the fact that the location is not conducive for costumers and not that nigerians do not want to patronize tinapa. i don't think it has anything to do with the civil war stigma @ the bolded point good point as well, i would support if all this nnewi aba etc can go to onisha and form a stronger market there but as u righly said, the governors or leaders have to look to it collectively which inculdes cross river leaders there is not point is scattering investments everywhere when u can be an economic hub |
Business › Re: Rich Nigerians: Why Are You Not Patronizing Tinapa? by aljharem3: 8:14pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
Onlytruth: In effect, what I'm saying is that Tinapa should be an outlet for finished products from ALL industries in the East. Folks who used to come from all over Africa to buy Aba made wears and Nnewi made products know they can land in Calabar and get it from Tinapa, isn't that a good thing. Everybody wins. ok very good point so in essence tinapa would be like a place where people would buy the finished products made from nnewi, aba etc then as u rightly said, a good railway or transport system to connect these markets are important for it to function. thanks brother Onlytruth: @alj harem,
The roads are even there already. What is needed is a regional understanding, which can be achieved with governors meeting and signing agreements.
Some folks blamed the "Nigerian factor" for Tinapa's failure. They are only correct to some extent. that i do not agree with |

Onlytruth: ^^ I never bought into the "international free trade zone" idea. How do you manage an international zone when you have not managed a local one?
Tinapa should be Nigerian first before international. I hate folks trying to fly before they can walk.
Yes, it should be part of an Eastern Nigeria regional business development plan. It should be linked with ALL major Eastern cities (especially the ones with industries). Folks come from many African countries to Nnewi and Aba.
Lagos is what it is today partly because it gets support from other western states in terms of human and business support. we know but how would ur suggestion of the connection of nnewi etc to tinapa be actualised u made very good points and i would like to see how this would happen and also the positive effect it would have of tinapa i support ur ideas but a bit more explaination |
Business › Re: Rich Nigerians: Why Are You Not Patronizing Tinapa? by aljharem3: 7:59pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
Onlytruth: To understand Tinapa's failure, you have to understand that sustainable development is a factor of CAPITAL, both human and material. Human activities sustain projects like Tinapa. But what human activities does the project target, and which of them are available within short timelines to enable the project continue a growth pattern? The project targets mainly "tourism". However, can tourism happen in isolation of "disposable income"? NO. How many other venues are available GLOBALLY for tourism? I say LEGION.
I have to cut to the chase. Tinapa should be part of an Eastern Nigeria regional business development plan whereby all major cities in the East are deliberately linked with either rail or good roads. Luckily, Tinapa also has a business factor, namely shopping malls etc. But what would you sell there and how do you get it there? Tinapa is in Eastern Nigeria. Why not create a business nexus between Aba, Nnewi, Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri, Abakaliki and Tinapa whereby products from local industries are marketed there?
If the business side of Tinapa is properly consummated, the tourism part would take off naturally because there would then be disposable income for things like jazz clubs, casinos etc.
No foreigner would visit a place Nigerians are not visiting. Africa is crazy about "Nollywood" today mainly because Nigerians consummated it first! If we never bought into Nollywood, it would never have crossed any of our borders. hmmm, u making sense but i would like if u can explain further about the aba nnewi etc connection with tinapa and how it would bring about the uplift of tinapa |

Onlytruth: ^^ Some folks here cannot stomach anything that would challenge Lagos. So to them, it is either in Lagos or it must die. Sad indeed.
I'll be back with my own diagnosis/prognostications. no brother, warri, abuja or port harcount would have been just fine |

afam4eva: Calabar is the no 1 tourist destination in Nigeri. But there's no way business tourism will work in calabar because is neither a commercial city or close to one. Tinapa would have made more sense if it were located in PH,Lagos, Abuja or even close to any of these cities. perfect answer |

Do u guys do bull fighting also? i would not say goat per say but i know of rams bull fighting is too dangerous and should not be encouraged unless it is natural while goats are too stubborb and do not follow the owners intrution but rams are good for such recreastional activity it is mostly done also duing sale or duing festive periods |

Tinapa cannot succeed with few people in Calabar. why igbos why not ijaws or fulanis or yorubas why igbos i would really really appreciate it if u can tell me\us the reason or are u trying to say there are not igbos in calabar market and other areas already |
Business › Re: Rich Nigerians: Why Are You Not Patronizing Tinapa? by aljharem3: 4:59pm On Jul 01, 2011 |
apache77: Tinapa was doomed from inception because the per capita income of Calabar residents is very low. The most immediate market of any wak in business is the surrounding population. Those are the people who sustain the business before the secondary markets are accessed. The local population must buy into such a business before the others from afar can come. Calabar residents didn’t just have the financial muscle to patronize it. So long as the primary market (in dis case calabar residents) lack the purchasing power to keep it going, then there’s is nothing anybody could hav done.
Tinapa is an upscale resort where luxury goods and high end services are provided- expensive salons, designer stores, jewellery shops, expensive hotels that come with high maintenance. Rent there is expensive, so are maintenance costs. These costs are built into prices offered by different businesses there. If the people cannot afford those prices, they wont come, and the businesses will close shop.
Game at shoprite in Lagos sells flatscreens for 900k some 1m.People in Lagos can afford it, so Game can remain in business. SPAR at Ceddi plaza in Abuja sells normal laptops for as much as 250k, and even though people can afford such, they still struggle for patronage. Take a trip to Ceddi plaza in Abuja, many tenants there have left becasue of high rents and low patronage. Barcellos at Silverbird Abuja sell a plate f rice and chicken for N1,800, wat Tantalizers normally sell for about N900 on the street. If a Mr Biggs or Tantalizers located in Tinapa, Ceddi or Silverbird is paying close to 15m annually, is it the N200 meat pie that will keep the business afloat? It comes down to bottomline, they must make sales to survive and their prices are always marked up by almost 200%.
Low income people will always go for less costly alternatives nearer them. Instead of patronizing Nandos in Tinapa, they will patronize the nandos in town. Instead of going to buy a designer bag there, they;l go to the normal stores. Person wey never chop belleful dey go watch cinema for N1,500? NopeTinapa has failed in Calabar, and it would have failed in many of the low income areas like Ilorin, makurdi, jos, Kaduna, akure etc.Theirs was a case of poor planning occassioned by poor economic analysis. good |

Eko Ile: See fingers pointing everywhere.
The fact is>>>
Nigerians don't vacation culture
Many Nigerians barely have enough money to put food on the table so where is the vacation or Tinapa entertainment money going to come from?
National and state infrastructural failures also doomed Tinapa. Tinapa is not easily accessible to many Nigerians outside and inside Calabar, we don't have safe and dedicated roads to transport people from every corner of Nigeria to Tinapa, air transportation is not cost effective for many Nigerians and their pockets, rich Nigerians don't want to have anything to do with local attractions, they prefer to jet outside the country. We need a good federal highway system connecting every state and major cities in Nigeria with easy access to major attractions.
Tinapa remains a great idea, Nigeria is just not ready, our leaders are not ready, our people don't have disposable income to feed and enrich Tinapa with, our transportation infrastructures sucks, everything just suxs right now. very good analysis just buried this thread, thanks |
