A'Ibom to boost agric with N20b Posted To The Web: Thursday, December 10, 2009 - Chika Goodluck Ogazi http://news.onlinenigeria.com/templates/?a=11570&z=12 GOVERNOR Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has disclosed that his government would spend nothing less than N20 billion on agriculture, the main focus of its 2010 budget, aimed at addressing the problems of food insufficiency and unemployment in the country. He made the declaration yesterday at the Presidential Lounge of Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMIA), Lagos, while speaking with journalists. According to him: "For me, it is agriculture. I'm going to place a lot of emphasis on agriculture and that is mainly to address food insufficiency not only in the state but also in the country as a whole. It is also a way of encouraging employment opportunities for the Akwa Ibom people". Akpabio said that the state is strategising on how it can ensure that 2010 budget focuses more on agriculture than any other sector in order to encourage employment opportunities and engage more youths for the development of the state. His words: "In agriculture, we are spending nothing less than N20 billion next year and we will ensure that the money is judiciously used for that purpose". On the areas to expand the level of development in Akwa Ibom State, he noted that one is that of tourism and the second one is internally-generated revenue (IGR). "We are building what we call Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) at the airport. We are hoping this would be completed in 2010 and of course, as you service aircraft there, we save foreign exchange for Nigeria and at the same time, we internally generate much revenue for Akwa Ibom State", he added. Akpabio said the Ibom Tourism Resorts is going to receive a major boom because it is easy now for investors and players who want to come down and enjoy leisure to fly in from outside the country and come directly to Uyo and play golf. Said he: "On the bad roads that we used to experience between Uyo and Calabar, that suffering is now eliminated. I'm working very hard to complete the dualisation of one of the arms of the road right from the airport to the state capital. So, in terms of tourism, I think it is going to boost our revenue". Asked about his major achievements in the office, he said: "My brother, the achievements are numerous. In the area of peace and security, I'm very satisfied. In the area of unity for the people, I'm very satisfied. In the area of resources and appointment, I've done it in a way that the entire state is excited, particularly in the distribution of resources". "In the area of road construction, we are second to none in this country. In the area of healthcare delivery, I've stopped a lot of pregnant women from dying. I declared free medical treatment for pregnant women in Akwa Ibom State. Now, people no longer die in churches or herbal homes. All these have been eliminated in the state and women are now safe. You can be sure now that if you have 1,000 women going for delivery, they are sure to come back alive. In the past, due to lack of money, people went to churches and traditional homes for child delivery", he added. |
Lagos: Robbery suspect nabbed in bank premises … N1m recovered By NWANNE OKOYE Thursday, December 10, 2009 Police operatives from Apapa Division, Lagos, have arrested a suspected armed robber, whose gang allegedly specialised in using master keys to open doors of cars parked in bank premises. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/10/514.html The suspect, Bartholomew Ofor, 32, and three others, were alleged to have successfully opened the door of a car and removed the sum of N1 million before he was apprehended. Luck ran out on him, after police operatives suspected him and three others simply identified as Sam, Matthew and Sunny and tried to arrest them. Ofor was apprehended, while his accomplices managed to escape. Daily Sun gathered that Ofor, a native of Cross Rivers State, was the one who actually opened the door of the car and removed the money. “Two of us went to the Oceanic Bank premises to steal valuable items inside customers’ vehicles. Policemen pursued us before they apprehended me. We usually operated at Apapa, Victoria Island and Ikeja. We used master keys to open car doors,” he said. Police told Daily Sun that they were still on the trail of the fleeing members of the gang. |
I can't believe Nigerian men are complaining about this in the 21st century. |

Lagos Judiciary: A feminine kingdom? By Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare Thursday, December 10, 2009 Men on the Lagos State bench may have to look for drastic means of preserving their gender as women not only dominate, but are also taking over the judicial arm of the state. Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare reports. Immediate past Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon. Ade Alabi (rtd),welcoming one of the numerous female lawyers in Lagos, Mrs. Bola Williams of the Rotimi Williams Chambers, to a legal event . Pic Cornelius Oyemade advertisement The epic Yoruba movie, “Lagidigba”, by popular film producer Yemi Adegunju, is one that aptly describes the situation of the Lagos State judiciary at this period. Lagidigba is the story of a female kingdom where it is a taboo to have any male presence. The women only go to neighbouring villages to have conjugal relationship and come back home when they get pregnant. But woe betides anyone who gives birth to a male child, as such a child would not be allowed to live. And any mother who voilated this tradition was exiled to the evil forest. To many observers, the Lagos State bench is a typical example of a female kingdom where even when a man is at the helm, those next to him in hierarchy are all females and, it is this feminine gender that controls the affairs of the institution. Anyone who thinks this is an exaggeration need not look far for a proof. Since her assumption in office as the Chief Judge of Lagos State a few months back, Justice Inumidun Enitan Akande, has openly declared at different fora, including while delivering her acceptance speech during her swearing-in ceremony at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, that the males are an endangered species the Lagos bench as they may soon go into extinction. This is not wishful thinking as there is existing statistics to support her statement. Of the 184 judicial officers in Lagos State, a total of 128 are female while only 56 are male. Out of the existing 51 High Court judges, 18 are men while 33 are women. There are 14 Chief Magistrates Grade 1 in Lagos ; 12 of these are women while only two are men. Furthermore, all the nine Chief Magistrates, Grade 2 in the state are women. Also, out of the 18 Senior Magistrates Grade 1, 14 are female while only four are males. In the Senior Magistrates Grade 2 cadre, 21 are females while 12 are males and in the Magistrates Grade 1 cadre, there are 22 women and nine men.In addition to this, the four judges that are next in line to the Chief Judge are all women. For this reason, many, particularly men, have claimed that the Lagos State bench is distressingly feminised. It being claimed that there are many women among legal counsels in Lagos State both in the state and private practice unlike in other states of the federation. Nigerian Tribune investigations also revealed that on the list of people to be upgraded to the position of judges last submitted to the National Judicial Council, (NJC), by the former Chief Judge, Justice Augustine Adetula Alabi, women are more than men. Information has it that the percentage of women to men in the list is 74 per cent to 26 per cent. An edition of Squib, a legal weekly, was blunt in its criticism of this trend. It said that, “keen observers of the Lagos judiciary are perturbed by the large number of females on the Lagos bench.” The journal then concluded that, “it is Lagos State Judiciary and not Lagos State Women Judiciary.” Part of the arguments put forward by the journal is that the women are usually not effective in carrying out their duties but this assertion has been proved to be a faulty one by some lawyers who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune. Barrister John Ubi in his reaction said, the presence of women in the judiciary in Lagos, though spectacular is not a planned event, adding that it has in no way affected the effectiveness of the judiciary. “It is a very serious issue. Women are taking over in many sectors the world over but I think it is sentiments and chauvinism that would make anyone cast aspersions on the productivity of these judges. That we have bad judges is a Nigerian factor and not an issue of gender. I have stood before both male and female judges in the Lagos judiciary, and I can tell you with all sincerity that not being good is not a gender problem. As we have good female judges so do we have bad male judges. It cuts across both sexes and should not be used as an argument to fulfill our unnecessary crusades. If a judge is bad, he is bad. This is not because he is male or female.” Tolu Awope, a civil defence lawyer, was more blunt in her reaction. “It is quite saddening that at this age and with the enlightenment expected from members of the bar, someone would just stand up and say because people are females, they are not good. I do not want to mention names, but I can say outright that I have appeared before many bad male judges whose judgments and handling of matters are not fit for even the magistrate courts while many of the female counterparts have handled similar issues in a better way. If the males are going into extinction in Lagos , I think they should encourage more young men to come into the law profession and do it well to get them a seat on the bench, and not raise unnecessary issues that will distract people from doing their jobs well. The only reason they can come out and say this is if they can prove beyond doubt that the female judges are not qualified for the position that they occupy.” Barrister Tony Okpara has more to say. “Those that are condemning female judges or their number on the bench are either jobless or still living behind the times. At this period when everyone is advocating equal chances among the genders, they are raising unnecessary dust. If the women are not performing, it is the fault of the male as they are the ones that put them there, or how many women are on the panel that elevate judges? The fact is, this issue should not come up at all as I have seen many good female judges in Lagos State and I have appeared before some bad male judges too. If men want to be there, they should work harder and leave these unnecessary sentiments. Their time will come too.” The Lagos judiciary has indeed become a female domain and if care is not taken, like some species of mammals, the males may quietly go into extinction on the Lagos bench. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/10/619.html |
Lagos: Man kills friend over N50 sachet water By CHRISTOPHER OJI Thursday, December 10, 2009 A man, who was arrested for allegedly killing his friend over N50, has narrated the incident which resulted in the death of the victim. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/10/513.html Seyi Olaiya, who is being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, told Daily Sun that it was not his intention to kill his bosom friend, Usman Yaya. He explained that fateful day, He narrated how he bought some fruits for himself, his fiancée and the victim before the tragic incident. He explained that as they were eating the fruits, he gave Yaya N50, to buy sachet water to wash their hands after taking the fruits. According to him, he expected Yaya to buy the water but he did not. He said when he finally saw him and inquired why he did not buy the water, he told him he used the money to buy cannabis, otherwise known as Indian hemp. He said: “Instead of giving me genuine excuse, he told me he used the money to buy Indian hemp.” He confessed that he became angry over the reply and asked him to either, refund the money or give him the water he asked him to buy. “Instead of being remorseful, he started challenging me to a brawl. As I made an attempt to fight him, he started running and I gave him a hot chase. As he was running, he hit his leg on a stone and fell and in the process, hit his head on a pavement,” he said. According to him, Yaya sustained serious injuries on his head and was rushed to a hospital, where he went into coma before he died. Olaiya, who wept profusely as he narrated the incident further said: “My brother, you can see that I did not mean to kill him. I was only trying to correct him. My brother, is it not contradictory that I would fight my guests, after buying fruits to entertain them”? A police source confirmed that Olaiya did not mean to kill his friend. He said what he found out was that when the deceased found out that he was too weak to withstand Olaiya, he took to his heels . “But instead of allowing him to go, Olaiya chased him until he fell and hit his head on a pavement,” he said. He said policemen were still investigating the case to ascertain the allegation that even after the victim fell, Olaiya still tortured him. The Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said the corpse had been deposited in a public morgue for autopsy. He disclosed that the result of the autopsy later indicated that he died from the injuries he sustained from physical combat with Olaiya. He said the suspect would be charged to court after investigation. |

oyb:You need to pay your taxes if you hope for adequate supply of social amenities. I don't know why Nigerians are afraid of paying taxes. |
You and I know the rationale behind that because that omo ibo she called me was typical of yorubas anytime they want to be sly because you are not one of them. Igbos do that too but in a different way. I haven't seen anyone who is a yoruba child or igbo child before. Tribes do not have children besides, if igbos express displeasure with that omo ibo nomenclature, continuing to call them that means you are looking for trouble. Refer to people by their names and not omo ibo, omo hausa, omo urhobo etc. Stop defending someone simply because you share the same religion; She had no reason to call me omo ibo and she continued even when I asked her to stop. The use of "omo ibo" depicts that age old mentality prevalent among Yorubas that people should be defined by the tribe they belong and not by who they are. You can see how that tribal fool who masks as a muslim unleashed that side of her above. I don't even know how she concluded that I am igbo because of the suffix in my name. I don't know how. |
