I challenge any man to come and say he has slept with me for money," ------Funmilola Iyanda

Funmilola Aduke Iyanda

"I challenge any man to come and say he has slept with me for money," this 38-year-old said to a newspaper interviewer a few years ago. A grandiose declaration for sure, ("I believe my own bull you see," she once said), but one that reflects the core of Funmi's identity: a fierce self-independence.

Whilst Funmilola Aduke Iyanda was yet a child, the TV presenter/producer's mother went out of the house one day, and she has not been found since. Unfortunately, her father battled alcoholism for some years, leaving the young Funmi to care for her younger siblings. The fifth child in a family of 11 would eventually sell clothes and odds and end at the University of Ibadan to see herself and her younger brother through the school.

"Funmi likes to say she went through her own hardships as a growing child," her friend, the playwright Wole Oguntokun, says. "Success detaches people from their origins usually, but she managed to fight that failing. That lack of desensitisation placed her in a place, very few television people could reach."

Of course, Funmi is more than just a TV personality. If she is brilliant on-air, she is an even more spectacular writer - insightful and unfailingly witty (one of her pieces for her column, Jisting, in the defunct Tempo magazine was titled ‘Dear God, I need a man'). She also co-wrote the first of Newton Jibunoh's desert memoirs.

Amongst other things, she is a sports diarist, stemming from her experiences as official chaperon for the likes of Charity Okpara and Chioma Ajunwa, pre-competition facilitator (painting her face in the national colours) for France '98, and covering international sporting events like the 1998 World Cup, the 1999 female World Cup, and the Athens and Sidney Olympics.

A star is born

But it was New Dawn that gave her flight. The show started humbly in the NTA Channel 10 studios in Tejuosho Yaba, Lagos, knocked together from the remains of a store. "Part of my love hate relationship with NTA 10," she reveals, "is a deep loyalty to the station for trusting a red haired, hot headed, quick tempered 29-year-old to independently produce their flagship show; they gave me my voice."

It began in 2000. It wasn't the first time she was doing television - having hosted and produced a number of talk, sports and entertainment shows, most while working with the man who would father her daughter, football legend Segun Odegbami - but Funmi was finally being heard.

The enunciation was far from sleek, her dresses pushed the envelope and she was given to spontaneity that TV viewers had to get used to. But she was a quick hit - and soon shows like the NTA's AM Express tried to repeat that magic. Her viewers also saw her tranform from an awkward, earnest female to a celebrated, achieving woman - with more than 50 awards in tow.

In April 2008 however, after eight years, during which her show had been upgraded to the NTA Network Service, she woke up one morning - and stopped New Dawn.

Ace comedian Ali Baba, who is a friend, says: "When she stopped her show, I just thought, that's Nigeria for you. The people who care about education don't get school licence, the real bankers couldn't raise 25billion, the good footballers don't make national teams, "

Many pointed to new TV phenomenon, Mo Abudu, whose show, Moments with Mo, seemed to have taken Funmi's place, dealing with the same issues, and talking with the same (and even bigger) personalities - only this time with a proper set, professional sound and styling, above-par camera work, superb editing, and the ultimate cross-continental platform - Mnet.

But Funmi points to her own battles, blaming "the whole of New Dawn's experience with NTA, the frankly fraudulent advert agencies and clueless media owners."

She's back

For many months after, no one knew what would become of Funmi. Then, on the 5th of January this year, she announced on her blog: "I'm back. No noise, no fanfare, just a quiet statement of fact: I am back."

Weeks after, she launched the Change a Life Foundation, crystallising her partnership of over half a decade with the Lagos State government to put about 30 children of single mothers through school, at a moving event in Lagos. But that was just the beginning.

Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said at a much-praised TED talk this year: "My friend, Funmi Iyanda, is a fearless woman, who is determined to tell the stories we forget." Which is exactly what Funmi did upon setting up a new company called Ignite Media. She travelled around five states in Nigeria for four weeks in a ten-hour daily schedule that saw her "swinging from abject despair to desperate hopefulness."

The result of those journeys is her new show unveiled to the public in October: Talk with Funmi.

Gbolahan Faleye, who began to present the arts segment on New Dawn when he was 17, and who describes her affectionately as "quite mad really" says: "I, like everyone else, was greatly saddened by the show's demise. However, I was hopeful that the closure would eventually lead to the birth of something more beautiful. Funmi's return to television vindicates this hope!"

In this new show, shot on high definition video, Funmi speaks with Nigerians from all spheres of life. She visited the Oba of Benin's palace, got footage flying over Lagos and spent a whole day with two governors, just as she joined Charly Boy and other motocyclists in full gear, went hunting at the Ita Olorun Village and danced the ‘swo' in Ajegunle. It premieres across the continent in January 2010.

"I had a month ago sat on a canoe in one of the poorest places, paddled slowly by the hauntingly intense Dami through the dankest, blackest waters I had ever seen or smelt, watching human faeces in various stages of decomposition flow by. The toilet was an exact replica of the slum dog millionaire sh*t scene without the beautiful colouring and diffusion of rough edges of that film," she says of one of the episodes.

"The power of my experiences is less about my person but about the stories, the people, the events that effortlessly weave through it," she says, in one of those touching moments of reflection that her blog readers are blessed to share. "Life does tend to happen to me, and perhaps I will one day sit down and write my story." It is sure to be one helluva story.

Funmi Iyanda's ‘Talk with Funmi' premieres in January 2010 on DSTV's Africa Magic & Magic World (Primetime), NTA/AIT and other selected stations around Nigeria, with an international cut scheduled for a major UK network.

Monalisa Chinda and her bodyguards

Who is after Nollywood star, Monalisa Chinda? She is now going around to events and premiers with an entourage which serve as her bodyguard. Recently, the actress has been seen at many events with a group of ladies who are neither actresses nor celebrities but who guard her so much that they won’t let anybody get too close.

However, the actress seems to be relishing the whole attention she is getting since her marriage break-up became public and now after weeks of keeping mum over the incident, she has gradually opened up and is ready to tell all.

Could it be that the comfort of having those drum-waisted ladies around her is making her so safe she can finally talk? Curiously, even when she is talking about her crashed marriage, the stern-faced ladies are always by her side maybe to offer succor.

Whatever may be her reason, the actress is actually living it.

Didn't the US senate impeach Bill Clinton for perjury?. What came out of it?. Impeaching an elected official does not necessarily mean he will leave office just like indicting someone does not necessarily mean there must be a conviction.

Did Fashola truncate the due process of law by awarding those contracts?. I read news a lot and I've never read this information from anywhere. My only problem with Fashola is his association with a celebrated bandit AKA Tinubu. I am seriously suspecting he used Tinubu to ascend the throne so he can help the suffering masses. You sound so elated and hope for his downfall, what will you gain from the downfall of  a functional Nigeria governor?. Shouldn't you be praying for God to dethrone the likes of Obi, Orji and Akala instead of Fashola?.  Do you mean well for Nigerians at all?

Sisters Batter Mistress For Dating Their Brother
December 14, 2009 15:09, 947 views
By Cyriacus Izuekwe

The fate of a 19-year old girl is now hanging in the balance as she was reportedly battered by four sisters for dating their brother.

The victim, Nancy Ijeoma Timothy, was allegedly beaten mercilessly by Mrs. Rita Akalerzi, 42; Mrs. Jane Udusegbe, 35; Mrs. Ndidi Adiole, 21 and a 27-year old Akudo Adiole, after they warned her several times to desist from sleeping with their brother, Emmanuel Adiole.

P.M.NEWS gathered that Nancy had been dating Emmanuel for the past two years and they had agreed to get married, while Emmanuel’s sisters had been troubling her since she started living with him at 35, Ajiwale Street, off Governor’s Road, Ikotun, Lagos.

“Since I started living with my fiance, his sisters have been making things difficult for me and have not known peace. Sometimes, they will come to the house with the intent to harass me.

“I bore their harassments because of the love I have for my man, still, they failed to understand,” Nancy narrated.

P.M.NEWS gathered that on the day of the incident, Emmanuel’s sisters assembled in their brother’s house while he was away to their home town in Imo State and ordered Nancy to park her belongings out of his house.

Her resistance resulted in her being beaten silly, leaving her stark naked.

The little girl had to run to Ikotun Police Station to report the matter.

All attempts by the police to arrest the ladies proved abortive as they were alleged to have assaulted the two policemen that came to arrest them.

It was a reinforced team that eventually arrested and took them to the station.

The ladies were charged to Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court for assault.

The offence was said to be contrary to Sections 518, 356, 315 of the Criminal Code Cap 17. Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2004.

The ladies pleaded not guilty to the charge, while the prosecutor, Oladejo Balogun, told the court, presided over by Mrs. Maimunat Folami, that the family of the defendants have been pleading with the complainants and that they have decided to forgive them, adding that the matter should be withdrawn.

Consequently, the matter was struck out and the accused discharged.

P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that the family of the defendants negotiated with the victim and they agreed that their brother will marry her and that she should withdraw the matter from court.

Yar’Adua’s worse condition stalls Turai’s return - More family members relocate to Saudi Arabia - Northern traditional rulers, politicians set up committee on president’s health - May extract commitment from Jonathan
From Tinu Ayanniyi and Taiwo Adisa
Monday, December 14, 2009

FIRST Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, had to change her plan to travel home from Saudi Arabia at the weekend, when the state of her husband’s health took a turn for the worse.

http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/14/614.html

Turai, who had engineered the return of many of the close aides of the president, who initially accompanied them on the Saudi trip, was billed to return to Nigeria last Saturday.

Sources indicated that when the health of her husband, President Umaru Yar’Adua, improved earlier last week, the decision was taken for her to embark on the trip to Nigeria to fine-tune the wedding plans of her daughter, Aisha, to the wealthy Sokoto businessman, Alhaji Tukur Abubakar (Rahamanniya).

But things changed by midweek, when the president’s condition relapsed and by Thursday, it could not be categorically said that the first lady would embark on the trip.

Sources said that the uncertainty made the Presidency to place its officials on 24-hour alert up till Saturday morning but that the health situation could not really guarantee the trip home.

Sources had said that the president’s family was planning to go ahead with the wedding plans, in spite of the health condition of Yar’Adua. The plan, according to sources, is to ensure the wedding plans are not stalled because of the president’s state of health.

But the wedding originally fixed for late January may have to be shifted, following the relocation of most members of the president’s immediate family to Saudi Arabia at the weekend.

Also on Sunday, the president of the Senate, Mr. David Mark, renewed his call on Nigerians to pray for the health of the president. Mark, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, said that in spite of the anxious moments in the country, Nigerians should stay steadfast and pray for their leader.

The statement quoted Mark as speaking at this year’s thanksgiving service of the St. Mulumba’s Chaplaincy, Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja. He said: “We are in difficult times in the life and history of our country. We should all continue to pray for the quick recovery of the president for him to return and continue the governance of our nation.

“Tongues are wagging, comments from both sides and across the divide. But whichever position one holds, we must remember that we are all created by God and none of us can claim to have the power to make or unmake another.

“Times like this call for sober reflection; we must pause and ponder on the positive way forward. Above all, we should be rational in our behaviour and utterances; we must remain our brother’s keeper.”

He also stated that inspite of the challenges, Nigerians had every reason to thank God and renew faith in the Almighty. The statement also quoted Reverend Father Paul Zion as saying in a homily that Nigerians must put hope in God.

The clergyman was quoted as saying: “Thanksgiving is the only time when we pay back what God has done or given to us all through the year.

Meanwhile, top traditional rulers and politicians from the North met in Abuja, last week, to discuss the state of health of President Yar'Adua. The well-attended meeting, it was learnt, raised a contact committee that will find out the exact state of health of the president so as to determine the next step to be taken by the region.

The meeting, it was learnt, resolved that the committee should find out if President Yar'Adua could continue till 2011 and if he could, would be backed by the region to do so.

The North, it was however learnt from deliberations at the meeting, would not back him for another term of four years. The rulers and elders, it was gathered, noted that if the contact committee's report said the president's state of health could not carry him till 2011, the meeting would prevail on him to resign and hand over to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to complete his term.

They are, however, poised to extract a commitment from the vice-president that he would only complete Yar'Adua's tenure and not become a candidate in 2011. The meeting, it was reliably gathered, said it would not accept any candidate presented by the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, for the 2011 presidential election.

They are of the belief that it was the former president that brought the North to this sorry pass. Meanwhile, it was learnt that they decided that they would shop for their 2011 presidential candidate themselves and Chief Obasanjo would not be allowed to have any imput because he already caused the problem they are facing at the moment.

Fact is no law favours EVERYBODY. It must hurt some and please some. However, in this Ogogoro case, it seems to be targeted against the POOR - those who cant afford to go for premium(are they premium?) alcoholic drinks!

Does, the law define what ogogoro is?Does the law specify the contents of ogororo?what makes ogogoro ogogoro and different from shepe, opa-eyin and the rest ?

Truth is ogogoro is  a LOCAL ALCOHOLIC DRINK . if the government want to hit against alcohol consumption, why just ogogoro? (hey, I no be ogogoro fan o!).

Crude as this may sound, some people eke out their livelihood via the production and sale of this drink and  banning it is just like taking away the air from their lungs! (or should they go and become militants in order to feed?).

I think instead of banning ogogoro, the producers could be sensitized on how to make it better and safer (even other alcoholic drinks have their defects) for human consumption.

Well, since our gofment bad, with no job for ghettoman, I suggest the ogogoro producers should adopt DORA STYLE in their trade: LET THEM REBRAND OGOGORO and give it a new name like Ogosky, Cuskigbaski (any suggestion?)

Good drink, for Good people!!
Do you know how many kilos of maize they destroy everyday to make this ogogoro/shepe/apetesi/opa-eyin?. Do you know how many children we can feed per day with the corn/millet they destroy daily for that nonsense?

The court presided over by Justice Elfreda Williams-Dawodu was also informed that Micheal, the eldest son was recently issued a deadline letter of December 7, informing him that he would be expelled from the school and may face deportation as he would be handed over to U.K Border to deport him back home.

Mr. A. Lawal, counsel to the Permanent Secretary's wife, Mrs. Anigbo disclosed this to the court during the week's proceeding for dissolution of their marriage. However, Anigbo's counsel, Mr. Alumona has refuted the women's claim that Micheal and Martins attend Newcastle and Sheffield Universities in that order.

Mrs. Anigbo through her counsel said that although their father claimed to have paid the school fees, the two schools have continued to insist that he present evidence of proof of payment, which he has failed to do.

She said further that she is surprised that Micheal who is supposed to be on Bank PHB student loan, arranged for him by the father is also involved in tuition fees saga.

Also, their last daughter, Ada has outstanding fees at Coroner School since January this year.

But counsel to Anigbo, Mr. Pat Alumona refuted all the claims made by Mrs. Anigbo in court.

According to him, Martin who just gained admission into the university has been taken care of by his father and to see them take a dramatic turnaround is confusing.

Alumona said Mrs. Anibgo wants his client to commit suicide as the situation had already created a heavy burden on him noting that his prayer is to proceed to trial for the dissolution of marriage.

Justice Dawodu-Williams adjourned the matter to January 26, 2010.
