A Timeless Love: Ngozi Ekezie & Wale Akintujoye Wed Posted on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 4:47 PM By BellaNaija.com On the 22nd of May 2010, Ngozi Ekezie and Wale Akintujoye started their lifelong journey as one – the couple were joined in holy matrimony at the All Souls Anglican Church, Lekki Phase I, Lagos. Ngozi and Wale’s love story began after they met through a mutual friend and was elevated to the next level after a romantic surprise proposal by Wale. The couple celebrated their traditional wedding at the bride’s family house and it was a joyous occasion for all as the bride glowed throughout the day as she changed from her Igbo attire to embrace her new culture in a beautiful orange and brown iro and buba while the groom proudly received his wine from his bride during the Igba Nkwu Nwanyi ceremony. https://cdn.bellanaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Ngozi-Ekezie-and-Wale-Akintujoye-Wedding-Bella-Naija012-428x600.jpg All this led to their wedding day and it was indeed a special and beautiful ceremony for the couple as their union was blessed and solemnized in the presence of their families and close friends. The bride, Ngozi was beautiful in her Victorian-era inspired gown by Kosibah. With its dramatic rushed train, delicate lace sleeves and corseted bodice, it was a showstopping dress for a stunning bride. Her veiled feather-adorned hat and bedazzled bouquet of red roses completed her bridal look. The groom, Wale was the perfect handsome companion to his beautiful wife in a classic blue suit paired with a print tie and a white boutonniere. After their wedding ceremony, the couple proceeded to their reception at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos and simply put, they stepped into new era. Their reception venue was transformed into a Victorian dream. From the unique arched pathway to the vintage umbrellas – it was beautiful. The couple then proceeded to enjoy their special day with their close friends and family. A splendid and romantic day for a special couple. BN wishes Ngozi & Wale a blessed and happy life together. May each day be filled with joy, laughter, happiness and prosperity. __________________________________________________ http://www.bellanaija.com/2010/07/27/a-timeless-love-ngozi-ekezie-wale-akintujoye-wed/ |
The regulatory authority of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) will tomorrow, August 1, commence the implementation of the newly introduced bus fares across its operational routes in the state. The new increment is a difference of N20 to the existing fare across the board. For instance, the bus fare from Mile 12 – Jibowu/Yaba which used to be N50 will now cost N70, while a trip from CMS to Mile 12 which used to be N100, now costs N120. Managing Director of LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, who announced the plan at a media briefing held at the agency’s headquarters, Ojota, attributed the harsh economic situation in the country as the major cause of the hike. He added that other operational challenges, such as cost of daily operation culminated into the recent increase. in the transport fare. Mobereola said: “When BRT commenced operation the cost of diesel was N60 and it wasn’t a month after we began operation that the cost increased to N90 and thereafter N120.” He added that in spite of the changes the agency was constrained from increasing the fare, because of its concern to ameliorate the challenges residents faced in accessing transportation in the state. He said; “But we are now at a point that we have to balance either providing a good system or allow the system to run down to the point where eventually the BRT will disappear leaving Lagosians to return back to danfo and molue which we don’t want to happen again.” Mobereola, explained that in developed societies, like in London, bus fare is actually increased annually from the first of January, whether there was inflation or deflation as part of measures to meet challenges of demands. He therefore, appealed for the cooperation from Lagos residents on the situation, stressing that it was geared towards serving them better and efficiently and not to inflict any further hardship on them. Mobereola also disclosed that the agency plans to migrate from the regular issuing of ticket to passengers at the bus shelter to the introduction of e-ticket. “Very soon we are going to migrate to e-ticketing system which is a lot easier to actually purchase. What we mean by this is that you don’t need to get to the bus shelter before you buy your bus fare, you can buy ticket at the supermarket and the difficulty of get the passengers balance would also be addressed.” He said. He noted that the e-ticketing system will also help to reduce leakages “and once the leakages are reduced it means that we will use that to deal with the issue of maintenance and ensure that we do not increase the bus fare unnecessarily.” Mobereola, also revealed that the agency had taken possession of 50 new buses which would be used to replace some of the buses that are presently in bad state. In somne of the reactions by Lagos residents to the planned increment of fare Mr. Moses Awodele said; “I do not have anything against the increment so long they can keep the service they render to the public intact; there is no problem with the fare increment.” Also, Ayokunle ogunyinka on his own part said “He will support the increment if there is a reason behind it, they buy diesel to keep the buses on the road and the cost of diesel is too expensive, and for the fact that it is owned by the state government does not mean that they should run the business on debt,” http://lindaikeji..com/2010/07/brt-new-fares-start-tomorrow.html |

Ndigbo Backs Fashola, Ojo LG Chairman Author: Date: Jul 30th, 2010. Igbo in Badagry Division of Lagos State, South West Nigeria, under the auspices of Ndigbo in Action Congress, has thrown its weight behind the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and Murisque Yinka Durosimi, the chairman, Ojo Local Government Area, for second term. The group, during a solidarity visit to the Ojo council chairman recently, said with the performance of both the state governor and the chairman, it has decided not only to canvass for a second term for them, but to also do everything reasonable to ensure that they are returned for a second term. Chief Chris Nwakouna, in his speech, described the governor and the chairman as men who have redefined leadership and governance as well as make the dividends of democracy get to all nooks and crannies in the state and local government. Nwakouna also described them as great leaders, administrators and managers of human and natural resources, who have carried all the tribes along in the state and local governments in their programmes, thereby bringing an enduring peace. In the light of this, the group has resolved to ensure that they are returned in office in 2011. According to him, “in the light of the foregoing, it is the resolve of the Igbo that you will continue in office in 2011. “You need re-election to complete the dream of a new state and local government and we therefore advise every intending and prospective aspirant for 2011 governorship and chairmanship elections to wait until 2014. “On our part, we assure you of our continuous and unalloyed support to your administration. We shall do all that is reasonable and lawfully permissible to ensure your re-election.” Responding, the council chairman described the visit as a sign of unity among the group, saying it shows that people are really getting what they desire from government. Meanwhile, the group has printed 100,000 copies of stickers canvassing for re-election of the governor and the chairman. —Paul Sanusi http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2010/07/30/ndigbo-backs-fashola-ojo-lg-chairman/ |

Diaspora Nigerian grills Bankole on corruption allegation By Ini Ekott July 30, 2010 12:31AM A question by a woman on why Patricia Etteh was removed as Speaker of the House of Representatives over corruption allegations, yesterday, forced conflicting responses from Dimeji Bankole, the current Speaker who is also facing allegations of corruption, and the house ethics chairman. Stella Okereke, a Nigerian resident in America, faced up to Mr. Bankole during a courtesy visit by Nigerians in Diaspora group, and demanded to know why he has retained his seat when he played a role in removing Ms. Etteh on a similar accusation. Ms. Okereke said she monitored the events of June 22, 2010, in the house, when 11 members of the house were suspended for leading calls for the Speaker to step down on corruption allegations. “When Patricia Etteh was accused of committing crime against the house, it didn’t take a long while before you people pushed her out,” she told Mr. Bankole at the event organised by the House committees on diaspora and foreign affairs. “Since what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, we are asking why was Etteh punished when we are having the same thing now.” Mr. Bankole devolved the query to the chairman of the committee on ethics and privileges, Sani Minjibir, whose committee is charged with the responsibility of the chamber’s self-scrutiny. Mr. Minjibir argued that the two cases were not similar, since an investigative committee, which he was a member of, found Ms. Etteh guilty of not following due process - an argument Mr. Bankole himself rejected. “The conclusion we reached, which has stood the test of time and adjudged okay by my colleagues, found out that the former Speaker was the person who was driving the procedures and in all the procedures, due process was not followed,” Mr. Minjibir said. “When we come to the Melaye’s case, we must always understand that until proven guilty, one is still innocent. As the ethics committee chairman, I have not taken sides with any party. I don’t attend meetings of any of the sides, and my colleagues know that, as I will do justice. “The Melaye’s case pains me. The rule is that members exhaust internal mechanisms before anything, and these people did not,” he explained. But Mr. Bankole countered the argument, admitting that the House position was not a judicial indictment. “I will be as frank as possible. I’ve been known to be sometimes frank,” he said. “For the records, Foluke Etteh was never indicted by any court, and was not impeached and remains a former Speaker.” Mr. Bankole, however, evaded discussing the allegations against him saying the matter is already before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/Politics/5600194-146/diaspora_nigerian_grills_bankole_on_corruption.csp |

Denver resident joins Nigerian presidential race By Monte Whaley July 29, 2010 01:08AM While the election season in the U.S. is steaming ahead, another campaign is being launched in Colorado by a man who wants to save his native land from graft and greed. Sam Wantings (Nwanti), a 46-year-old Greeley resident, is running for presidency of Nigeria, a country he visits frequently, even though he’s lived in the United States for more than half his life. Mr Wantings said he wants to use his background as a detective and business entrepreneur to rid Nigeria of corruption and bring honest business opportunities to his people. “Nigeria needs to change,” he said. “And I’m the only one who can effect that.” He said his 2011 run for the presidency commences in August, when he will return to Nigeria and begin his on-the-ground campaign. He plans to do that for most of this year and into next year. “Criminals and corrupt politicians run my country, and I feel I need to run now to make any kind of difference,” he said. “It needs to happen soon, or it will be too late.” Mr. Wantings, who has dual citizenship in Nigeria and the U.S., said he does not believe his split loyalties will hurt his chances. “I think the people will appreciate that I can give our country a fresh perspective, a fresh view of the things that need to be done,” he said. The man and his family moved to California in 1984, and he became a security officer while he attended Sacramento State College to study Criminal Justice. He stayed in contact with friends and family back home. In 2003, Mr. Wantings served as vice chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party chapter in Washington. That same year, he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Imo State. He moved to Greeley in 2006 because his wife got a job at a local nursing home. He said he’s been trained by the FBI and KGB, which makes him an ideal choice to root out corruption. He also said his connections with his family business in Nigeria means he can bring legitimate commerce to his land. Mancho Samba, chairman of the African Detective Association, is listed as a staunch supporter on Mr. Wantings’ campaign literature. “He will obey, follow, respect the law,” Samba said in his endorsement. “Corruption, crimes, will be on vacation when he takes over in 2011.” Mr. Wantings wants endorsements from local business and political leaders to help rebuild the infrastructure of Nigeria. His plan is to partner with Colorado firms, who will then use Nigerian labour for the rebuilding. “This is my country’s best chance to realise its potential,” he declared. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5599585-146/denver_resident_joins_nigerian__presidential.csp |
IBB Ibadan rally flops * $12.4bn oil windfall: FG panel submits report on ex-military president Monday Written by Adebayo Waheed, Qudirat Hakeem-Apanpa and Lanre Adewole Friday, July 30, 2010 MANY politicians were, on Thursday, disappointed at the non-appearance of former President Ibrahim Babangida in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as reported in the media for the past two weeks. advertisement The politicians, who were gaily dressed, waited to receive him at the Ibadan end of the defunct Lagos-Ibadan expressway toll gate, while many cars and over 60 buses were also there waiting. The former military president failed to show up to kick off his presidential campaign slated for the Polo Ground, Eleyele, Ibadan, as a result of alleged 'security risk alert.' A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the former president had, on Wednesday night, informed that the security situation in the state did not favour his coming. It will be recalled that some students of tertiary institutions across the state had staged a peaceful protest to some media houses, warning against the coming of the former leader to kick-start his campaign in the state capital. The students were said to have threatened to stone him (IBB), if he showed up for the exercise in Ibadan. The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, who led other members of the Ibadan Traditional Council to receive him at the Oja'ba palace, went home disappointed when the news came that the former military leader would not be available for the ceremony. Also, some members of the IBB Campaign Organisation and some top government officials, who were at the Ibadan toll gate, were disappointed as they waited endlessly for the arrival of the former military president. Babangida, who was represented by a former governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abdulkhadir Kure, could not deliver the lecture slated for the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), because he was not assigned to handle it by the former president. Speaking at the NUJ Press Centre, Alhaji Kure claimed that three serving governors in the South-West were in support of the candidature of Babangida and wondered why anyone would be spreading the rumour that the people in the region did not want Babangida in the presidential race. Kure, who commended the appointment of the new INEC boss, Professor Attahiru Jega, stated that he would surely conduct credible elections, urged him to ensure a new voters' registration for the election to be credible. He explained that "I would want to avoid talking anyhow in order to avoid saying anything that may prevent IBB from becoming the president in 2011, because the people of the South-West are too intelligent to be played upon by anyone." The representative was said to have paid homage to the Molete home of the former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, the late Chief Lamidi Adedibu. He later went to the Polo Club, venue of the rally. Meanwhile, a panel set up by the Federal Government on the alleged indictment of Babangida over the $12.4 billion Gulf War oil windfall by the Pius Okigbo Panel report will submit its report ON Monday, and this is authoritative. The first phase of the panel's assignment was to authenticate a copy of the Okigbo report which was provided by a coalition of civil society groups, which is demanding the prosecution of the former Nigerian leader over the alleged sleaze. The panel, headed by the Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Alhaji Abdullahi Yola, would submit its report to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Bello Adoke SAN, who instituted the panel. The coalition had asked the AGF to commence Babangida's prosecution over the alleged scam using the copy of the Okigbo Panel report which it sent to him. Adoke, however, insisted that the genuineness of the report sent to him by the coalition must be established since the coalition was not the original custodian of the report and the source of the report was not known to government. He, subsequently, set up the Yola Panel in May, which had reportedly concluded its investigation and would be submitting its report on Monday. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the panel, in the course of its investigation, interviewed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) over the authenticity of the report, with a source disclosing that the panel also moved around to see if a member of the Okigbo Panel could authenticate the copy of the report sent by the coalition of the civil society groups. The source, however, declined to disclose the content of the Yola Panel or confirm whether a member of the Okigbo Panel was seen by the Yola Panel. Justifying the setting up of the Yola Panel, Adoke had said, "since SERAP (the leader of the group) is not the original custodian of the report, would it not be right to have what was sent verified? Even if it's genuine, don't I have to verify the content of the report and see if there are material evidence and witnesses that could sustain criminal charge. We are all partners in the fight against corruption and it must be according to the rule of law. Nobody must be criminalised before the process is complete." In a letter dated May 12 , 2010, the minister had promised the coalition a committee that would consider the genuineness of the signed report sent by the group and the findings on allegations of corruption and mismanagement of $12.4 billion in the Dedicated and Special Accounts by Babangida while in power. The letter read in part: "I acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 5th May 2010. I appreciate your effort in making available a signed copy of the Dr Pius Okigbo Panel Report, and, as appropriate, I shall set up a committee that will confirm the authenticity of the said report and also review the allegations and recommendations contained therein with a view to ascertaining whether these allegations can sustain a criminal charge. While we shall keep you informed of our effort in this regard, I would like to thank you for your concerted effort in sustaining the fight against corruption in our society."A part of the Okigbo report read: "the dedication and special accounts had become a parallel budget for the presidency. The decision as to what expenditure items to be financed out of these dedicated accounts was made by the president alone. "For example, the accounts had been utilised to defray an assortment of expenses that could not in any way be described as priority such as the $2.92 million to make documentary film on Nigeria; $18.30 million to purchase TV/video for the presidency; $23.98 million for welfare of staff in the presidency; $.99 million for travels of the first lady abroad and $59.72 million for security. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jul/30/601.html |
A' Ibom: Man beheads 13-year-old niece Stories from NGOZI UWUJARE, Ibadan Wednesday, July 28, 2010 The entire people of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were shocked to the marrow penultimate Wednesday. It was not without a cause. That was the day a 30-year-old man identified as John Etim Akpan allegedly beheaded his 13-year-old niece. [img]http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jul/28/sun/head20-28[1].gif[/img] Akpan with the Severed head http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jul/28/501.html Daily Sun gathered that the suspect, Akpan, met his niece returning from school soaked in rainwater. He then offered to help the girl by carrying her on his motorbike. But Akpan allegedly had other plans. Instead of taking the little girl home, Akpan was said to have taken her to his room. Once in the safe confines of his abode, Akpan allegedly severed the young girl’s head. Akpan then sneaked out of the room with the girl’s head and buried it somewhere with the hope of later removing it for sale. However, while removing the girl’s body, some members of the family had suspected that something was wrong as they saw blood dripping on the ground. They later discovered the body and shouted for help. The villagers and other youths in the surrounding villages quickly rushed out and beat Akpan to a state of coma before the matter was reported to the police. One of the youths, Elder Silas Bassey, told Daily Sun that when they heard the noise from the family, they rushed out. He said after discovering what really happened, the mob descended on Akpan and beat him mercilessly until he passed out. It was said that during interrogation, Akpan confessed that he actually beheaded his niece. He said he wanted to get money from the sale of the skull. The culprit has since been remanded in prison custody, pending further investigations by the police. |
