Foreign AffairsRe: Russian Soldiers Are Freezing To Death In Eastern Ukraine by AlphaTaikun:
okoroemeka:
for you to call the above story a lie shows you are not familiar with history, the steppes of central Russia and mostly Ukraine has two things that protects them from foreign Invaders, the russian mud or rasputitisa and the bitter frezzing cold, [bgNapoleon Bonaparte was first to experience the bitterness of Russian winter and the sinking black mud that he lost 80% of the grande armee retreating from Russia, also Adolf Hitler had operation Barbarossa to conquer Russia but the cold frezzing weather stopped the Germans a few kilometers from Moscow and caused more casualty than from actual combat,it is now a bitter irony for Russia that their own natural defence is working against them
Nicely put.

It's good that you are conversant with these 2 major winter events in international warfare history involving the troops of Napoleon and Hitler against the Russians within Russian territory.

The bogging down in the heavy Russian snow (of the foreign invaders has always fascinated me since the 1980s).

SportsRe: World Cup: Ivana Knoll Slammed For Wearing Sexy Outfit To Qatar. She Reacts by AlphaTaikun:
Malcolmprincex:
Former Miss Croatia, Ivana Knoll, has responded to criticism over her revealing outfit to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Knoll, who dubbed herself "the world cup's hottest fan," sparked controversy after she attended her country's match against Morocco wearing a risque outfit, before changing into another, even more exposing dress for Croatia's second match against Canada.

The beauty queen can be seen in photos that surfaced online posing for selfies with fans while wearing a checkered minidress that bares her breasts.

After the photos went viral, Knoll came under fire from social media users, who berated her and warned her to respect the cultural code of Qatar.

Well, reacting, Knoll said she was "super angry" when she heard about the modesty rules in Qatar and decried that she wouldn't stop wearing outfits that expose her body.

According to the 26-year-old, she has no fear of being arrested by the police.

"I think how can my dress or bikini hurt someone? Please explain me that. First I was thinking if the World Cup is happening there (Qatar), for sure they will allow us everything to make it comfortable for all fans without any of the restrictions.

"Then I heard about the rules and I was shocked. The dress code forbids showing shoulders, knees, belly and everything and I was like, 'Oh my God, I don't even have the clothes to cover all of that'. I was super angry because if I'm not a Muslim and if we in Europe respect hijab and niqab, I think they need also to respect our way of life, our religion and in the end me wearing dresses, bikinis because I'm Catholic from Croatia who is here because of the World Cup.

"But when I arrived I was surprised they were not making any problems about dressing, they allow you to wear everything what you want - except in government buildings, and in the end that's fine." She said.

Asked if she had felt there was any risk of being arrested for her outfits, Knoll replied, "I am never afraid of something like that."

"The reactions are very good. Many of the Qatari people came to me to photograph me. If they hate it and they have something against it, they wouldn't do it. I think it's just another way of life, me and them." She added.

FamilyRe: A Real Sample Of Yoruba Marriage List (Pictures) by AlphaTaikun: 10:51pm On Dec 01, 2022
Aladeintl:
As far as the bride price is concerned in Nigeria, the Yoruba list remains the cheapest.

Attached in this article is the bride price list that my girlfriend's family gave me for marrying their daughter let me shock you, I still divide some of those items into two.

Note:
1. almost all the items here are general items that will be requested in any part of Yorubaland

2. Some may add one or two things to it, e.g., live goat or chicken.

3. The quantity of each item may be more or less but I can bet you that it won't be outrageous.

4. The bride's father writes the list not the community but if he likes, he may ask for the input of his elderly ones preferably his elder brother (or sister).

The input most time is for the first daughter. After that, the remaining daughter's is a photocopy.

5. It is negotiable.

6. Except for the monetary materials, all other bride price materials will be shared equally by the bride's father and mother and some portion send to both grandparents' families.

7. Any family in Yoruba that gave you a bride price worth 300k should be reported to their religious leaders for greediness and covetousness.
That's awesome!

The late Queen's lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey has apologised and resigned after she repeatedly asked a black British charity boss where she was "really" from.

Ngozi Fulani, a charity founder, was questioned about her background at the charity event at the palace on Tuesday.

Ms Fulani, said she was "totally stunned" by Prince William's godmother's comments.

The palace described the remarks as "unacceptable and deeply regrettable".

A spokesperson for Prince William said "racism has no place in our society".

"The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect," they said.

Lady Hussey, 83, was a close confidante of the late Queen and accompanied her at the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh last year.

'In shock'
Ms Fulani, in an interview with the Independent website, said the issue was "bigger than one individual. It's institutional racism".

"I was in shock after it happened and anybody who knows me knows I don't take this kind of nonsense," she said.

"But I had to consider so many things. As a black person, I found myself in this place where I wanted to say something but what happened would automatically be seen as my fault, it would bring [my charity] Sistah Space down.

"It would be 'oh, she has a chip on their shoulder'."

Ms Fulani said she did not want to see Lady Hussey "vilified".

An eyewitness to the conversation, Mandu Reid, told BBC News that Lady Hussey's questions had been "offensive, racist and unwelcoming".

The leader of the Women's Equality Party said she had felt a "sense of incredulity" about the exchange in which Ms Fulani was interrogated about where she was from, even though she had already explained she was born and lived in the UK.

FamilyRe: 50-Year-Old Nigerian Shares Her Regrets About Her Parents Sending Her Abroad by AlphaTaikun: 7:21pm On Nov 30, 2022
Familyplug:
A 50-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN WOMAN SHARES HER REGRETS ABOUT HER PARENTS SENDING HER ABROAD TO SCHOOL AS A TEENAGER.

I came to the UK in the 80s and went to Skinners school for girls in Stamford hill where I failed woefully. I come from a family where going abroad was like going to the market for us. I lived with my sister-in-law who I happened to have appeared to as a burden at the time. I had no one to take me out as a child, didn't enjoy McDonald's treats. I remember being bought KFC once by my mother's younger sister who was in the UK at the time. Most days I had to walk from Pembury estate, Hackney to Stamford hill because I had no transport fee. An uncle got me free school meals from the government so I always had lunch at school but other meals were not guaranteed...

No one ever asked me how I was doing in school even though I was a failure, never disclosed my report sheet because my results were always 'U- Unclassified' worse than F9. I lived at the expense of a few of my brother's friends who were ready to give me £5 in exchange for me seating on their laps whilst they used my nipples as a toy. On a few occasions, my immediate family would give me £5, £10 but NONE EVER TOOK ME ON AS HIS OR HER RESPONSIBILITY. One glorious day, a brother of mine took me on when he noticed that I have been associating with friends that were smoking and sexing at the age of 12 but due to malicious beating every day I had no choice other than to run away from his house. ....

I became streetwise, smoking heavily at the age of 11/12, and did my first abortion at the age of 14/15. I was unable to contact my mother because I had no access to the telephone moreover I didn't know how to use the phones then. I lived with a Jamaican friend who was a few years older than me and we had a man friend aged 50t who was impotent but would pay our rent whenever we allowed him to lick/suck us. Hhhhmmmm I'm sobbing as I'm writing this; I don't know why my spirit has led me to share this horrific and pathetic story but I am sure it is to bless someone out there so I am not ashamed of letting it out because someone outthere will think twice before making the mistake my family made.

I and friends began to find it easy to befriend men for money at night clubs (Gullivers, Petter Stringfellows, etc) at a very young age which I found disgusting, they molested my body orally. I can't even carry on expressing my bitter past experiences because I have learnt to see them as the strengths that made me who I am today...

The Koko of this post is this... Now in the UK, we see Nigerian children killing, shooting, stabbing, selling drugs, raping, etc and we wonder why they are ridiculing our darling country's name... Hhhhmmmm it is not the kids' fault it is the fault of the parents that weren't ready to prioritize their priorities.

I can't blame my mother and neither can I blame my father because they thought sending me abroad to school was the best for me. They also trusted my siblings and didn’t like to get involved in the way they were raising us. They believed when you give a goat to someone, you let go of the rope. They didn't know their darling daughter had become something else.....

You may be boosting that your child lives in London, America, etc but do you ever ask yourself how life is treating them where they are??

So many parents in Nigeria believe the field is greener on the other side forgetting that NO ONE CAN TRAIN YOUR KIDS THE WAY YOU CAN EXCEPT LOVING & GOD-FEARING PEOPLE.

In the UK so many Nigerian parents have misplaced their priorities, they rather work 24/7 and make all their monies to build mansions in Nigeria at the expense of their children's lives.

So many Nigerian parents in the UK don't even attend parents' evenings at their kid's school, some can't even help their kids with homework. Some believe their kids are at home and they are safe not knowing who is there with them. Some would rather spoil their kids with money & expensive outfits instead of investing quality time in them.

Sending your kids abroad to be looked after by someone else is a pure waste of time and bringing your kids from 9ja without giving them all the time needed is an irresponsible move and to be working all God-sent hours, making sterling, dollars, and euros, naira, etc without spending quality time with your kids is a disgrace to parenthood.

This is one of our bad irresponsible cultures even back home ….most children in Nigeria were brought up by housemaids/gatemen/next door/grandmothers/neighbors etc. Some Nigerians don't believe in family planning rather they will have so many children and start using them to hawk sweets, bread, etc after school...

Having a child is not by force, God did not say YOU MUST HAVE CHILDREN, YES HE STATED 'MULTIPLY' but he didn't mean we should do it to suffer for them. Having children does not mean you will live your life joyfully and it doesn't give you a place in heaven either, instead, your children may make you miss heaven if care is not taken.

I am a product of a neglected, nonchalant, cultural upbringing and I WILL NEVER WISH IT ON MY GREATEST ENEMY BECAUSE I HAD IT ROUGH AND IN SADNESS.

Let us stop being selfish and stop pushing our problems/burdens on others. Your child should be with you no matter how poor or rich you are and you must teach them in the ways of God.

Some parents in Nigeria, have children in Diaspora and know nothing about their life , only the fact that their child is abroad.

Scientists have revived a 50,000 year old zombie virus that had been trapped deep within the Siberian permafrost in Russia.

Over a dozen prehistoric viruses were discovered by researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

They made the foreboding discovery within ice cores deep underground in Siberia, Russia.

The preprint study revealed 13 never-before-seen viruses that had been laying dormant within the ice for tens of thousands of years - and are now being brought back.

Researchers revived a virus that was 48,500 years old, called Pandoravirus yedoma.

However, this is not the first time the boffins have found such ancient diseases trapped within the ice.

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article28600509.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Ice-cave-in-Baikal-frozen-lake-in-winter-season-at-beautiful-sunset-Olkhon-island-Siberia-Russia.jpg

Back in 2014, the same researchers found a 30,000-year-old virus trapped in the permafrost and found that, after all that time, it was still able to infect organisms.

Now, with the thirteen new viruses in hand, scientists are thawing them out to assess their impacts on public health.

However, the find raises a very real and worrying possible threat to the world.

As the permafrost, or permanently frozen ground, melts and thaws, the ice is releasing the chemicals and microbes that were trapped there.

This is happening more and more because of climate change and could include releasing more ancient viruses we know nothing about.

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article28600531.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_A-single-stylized-COVID-19-coronavirus-cell-on-paper-pattern-background.jpg
This is one of the effects of climate change and the melting of polar ice.
Mammoths, some prehistoric human bodies, and dormant viruse have been unearthed from melted ice in Europe.

It's good that scientists and virologists have detected these infectious virus on time so that medical antidotes can be found to boost our immunities.

Ngasky:
wind or solar are only good at peak load situations. but generally inefficient in terms of base loads. which Nigeria needs desperately
the two systems are open system machinery which have the efficiency of between 40-45% only at best case scenario.
it is also very expensive to install and also to maintain. it takes huge area of land/sea which cannot be used for any other purpose after installation of such system.
ask anybody who installs solar system in his house what is his experience? that is why people are going for inverters only rather than solar / wind system.
what Nigeria needs are mega power stations with the capability of base load requirement. and these can be achieved through conventional Nuclear. gas or hydro plants
i dont see where the massive job opportunity is in the phantom wind energy.
for 13 sites to give you 6000MW each site must contain thousands of wind pylons and covers thousands of hectares of area. whereby a single major power plant can give you 8000-10000MW which is better?
Nicely put.

Mini-grids still have roles to play in locations where there is significant sunlight and wind though.

Visit any interstate Transport company nearest to you and ask them the oil change duration of their vehicles .

Na we dey make things unnecessarily hard for ourselves..

Except for very short distance drivers, 3k miles oil change is very very unnecessary

So if I travel from Abuja to Lagos and back thrice, my car is due for oil change? ... For what biko?
Car TalkRe: So All This While I Have Been Doing Oil Change At 3000 Km by AlphaTaikun: 10:17pm On Nov 28, 2022

I used to have the same 3k mile oil change mindset .... But now I know different.. Now na 10k miles steady I dey do on a 2007 Toyota Prado.. On 20w50.. I frequently do some serious highway miling though..

I manage some Toyota Hiace "hummer" Buses that are used for Transport business to and from the far North to Lagos... These buses do 2 round trips almost every week.. That's more than 1. 5k miles per round trip.. And these buses get their oil change every 2 months, after covering more than 20k miles... And yes.. Na 20w50 dem dey use for service.. And these buses are still in jolly shape more than 5 years down the line.

In my opinion, moisture is the worst enemy of engine oils.. Frequently driving very short distances like 5miles daily tend not to allow the oil get hot enough to evaporate condensed moisture in it, which ends up fvcking up the oil prematurely..in that instance, even changing oil at 2k miles won't help much... That continuous and unexpelled condensation buildup in oil is what majorly causes engine sludge..

If you do more than 30 miles at a stretch daily at steady average revs of 2k+, I don't see why you can't push up your oil change period to 7 or 8k miles.. And if you frequently do 300mile+ journeys, push it up to 10k miles... Even with mineral oils

If those Volkswagen Sharans and Hummer buses used for interstate transport can do 20k+ miles per oil change on mineral oils , I don't see why some of us private drivers can't, given the right circumstances.

After all said and done, despite the bodily lagginess of some of those transport vehicles, their engines are mostly in pretty top shape.. Far better shape than the engines of some of us who keep unnecessarily spoonfeeding our engines.. Some of them still have their factory engines even after 10 years of constant long-distance travel...

Country too hard to dey waste money dey dash oil salesmen that are praying for you to change oil every 1k miles..

NB.. this comment isn't for you if you frequently do very short-distance driving..
Insightful.

The Taiwan president, Tsai Ing-wen, resigned as head of the ruling Democratic Progressive party (DPP) after it suffered local election losses on Saturday.

Voters in Taiwan overwhelmingly chose the opposition Nationalist party in several major races across the self-ruled island in an election in which lingering concerns about threats from China took a backseat to more local issues.

Tsai spoke out many times about “opposing China and defending Taiwan” while campaigning for DPP. But the party’s candidate Chen Shih-chung, who lost the vote for mayor of Taipei, only raised the issue of the Communist party’s threat a few times before he quickly switched back to local issues as there was little interest, experts said.

Tsai offered her resignation on Saturday evening – following tradition after a major loss – in a short speech in which she also thanked supporters.

“I must shoulder all the responsibility,” she said. “Faced with a result like this, there are many areas that we must deeply review.”

While international observers and the ruling party have attempted to link the elections to the long-term existential threat that is Taiwan’s neighbour, many local experts do not think China – which claims the island as its territory, to be annexed by force if necessary – has a large role to play this time around.

The international community has raised the stakes too high. They’ve raised a local election to this international level, and Taiwan’s survival,” said Yeh-lih Wang, a political science professor at National Taiwan University.

During campaigning, there were few mentions of the large-scale military exercises targeting Taiwan that China conducted in August in reaction to a visit by the US House speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

“So I think if you can’t even raise this issue in Taipei,” Wang said. “You don’t even need to consider it in cities in the south.”

Candidates from the Nationalist party won the mayoral seat in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, as well as in Taoyuan, Taichung and New Taipei city.

The public voted for mayors, city council members and other local leaders in all 13 counties and in nine cities. There was also a referendum on lowering the voting age from 20 to 18, which was defeated, according to local media.

Chiang Wan-an, elected as the mayor of Taipei, declared victory on Saturday night at a large rally. “I will let the world see Taipei’s greatness,” he said.

Not all votes had been formally counted by the time of his speech, but Chiang and the other candidates’ numerical lead allowed them to declare victory.

Kao Hung-an, a candidate in the relatively new Taiwan People’s party, won the mayoral seat in Hsinchu, a city home to many of Taiwan’s semiconductor companies.

Campaigns had resolutely focused on the local: air pollution in the central city of Taichung, traffic snarls in Taipei’s tech hub, Nangang, and the island’s Covid-19 vaccine buying strategies, which left the island in short supply during an outbreak last year.

The defeat for the ruling DPP may be partly explained by the way it handled the pandemic.

“The public has some dissatisfaction with the DPP on this, even though Taiwan has done well relatively speaking in pandemic prevention,” said Huang Wei-hao, a political science professor at National Sun Yat-sen University.

At an elementary school in New Taipei City, which surrounds Taipei, voters young and old came early despite it raining.

Yu Mei-zhu, 60, said she came to cast her ballot for the incumbent mayor, Hou You-yi. “I think he has done well, so I want to continue to support him. I believe in him, and that he can improve our environment in New Taipei City and our transportation infrastructure.”

Tsai came out early on Saturday morning to cast her ballot, catching many voters by surprise as her security and entourage swept through the school.

“If the DPP loses many county seats, then their ability to rule will face a very strong challenge,” said You Ying-lung, chair at the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation, which regularly conducts public surveys on political issues.

The election results will in some ways also reflect the public’s attitude toward the ruling party’s performance over the last two years, You said.
Some felt apathetic to the local race. “It feels as if everyone is almost the same, from the policy standpoint,” said 26-year-old Sean Tai, an employee at a hardware store.

Tai declined to say who he voted for, but wants someone who will raise Taipei’s profile and bring better economic prospects while keeping the status quo with China. “We don’t want to be completely sealed off. I really hope that Taiwan can be seen internationally,” he said.

The economy and infrastructural development meant a lot to the
Taiwanese voters. That's why the ruling party lost... despite the successful handling of Covid-19!

The Taiwanese still cherish their distinct independence from China.

Foreign AffairsRe: Canada Probes Set Up Of Chinese ‘ Police Service Stations’ In Toronto by AlphaTaikun: 7:53pm On Nov 28, 2022

The Canadian Royal Mounted Police has announced that it is launching an investigation into reports about the establishment of Chinese “police service stations” in the city of Toronto.

“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating reports of possible foreign actor interference at undeclared “police service stations” believed to be operating on behalf of the People’s Republic of China in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA),” the RCMP said in a statement on Tuesday.

In the statement, the RCMP said that it is aware of recent reports that accuse China of targeting the Chinese diaspora throughout Canada and is investigating “all criminality” related to such activities.

“Our aim is to prevent intimidation, threats and harassment as well as any form of harm initiated on behalf of a foreign entity being applied to any community in Canada,” the statement said.

It also said that the RCMP emphasized that foreign actor interference is considered a threat to Canada’s national security as it allows direct meddling in the country’s internal affairs.

All attempts made by foreign states to meddle in the lives of Canadian citizens, including through threats, harassment, intimidation or corruption, will be investigated by the RCMP, the statement added.

The authorities have requested Canadian citizens to communicate with them if they are aware of any activity arising from the alleged “police service stations” or if they have been threatened by China.

Earlier this month, China rejected reports of deployment of overseas “police stations” in foreign nations, saying “police service centers” outside the country only assist Chinese nationals in accessing the online service platform in the respective countries.

Beijing’s response came after the Dutch government ordered China to close the “police service stations” in the Netherlands, saying that no permission was sought for the “police service stations” from them.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said these sites mentioned are not “police stations” or “police service centers”.

“They assist overseas Chinese nationals who need help in accessing the online service platform to get their driving licenses renewed and receive physical check-ups for that purpose. The venues are provided by local overseas Chinese communities who would like to be helpful, and the people who work on those sites are all volunteers who come from these communities,” he said.

“They are not police personnel from China. There is no need to make people nervous about this,” Zhao added.
Chinese communication breakdown. Lol.
