Bernie Moreno, a United States senator, has introduced a bill that seeks to eliminate dual citizenship for American nationals.

The US law currently allows citizens to hold multiple nationalities without requiring them to renounce any.

However, according to Moreno’s bill, dubbed the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, that flexibility may create “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties”.

“One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so,” said the Colombian-born senator.

“It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America!

Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”

Moreno later renounced his Colombian citizenship.

If passed, the law could affect notable US citizens such as Melania Trump, the US first lady, who holds both US and Slovenian citizenship.

It would also affect many Nigerians who have dual citizenships in Nigeria and the US.

According to a July US naturalisations annual flow report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the US swore in 38,890 Nigerians as naturalised citizens from 2021 to 2023.

Nigeria was the 13th country with the most naturalised citizens and the only African country among the top 20 countries.

Nigerian laws permit dual citizenship for citizens by birth, allowing them to acquire or retain citizenship of another country without forfeiting Nigerian citizenship.

Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order aiming to deny automatic citizenship to US-born children of undocumented immigrants.

However, the order faced immediate lawsuits from some 18 states and rights groups, citing violations of the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause.

The order has yet to take effect owing to the legal hurdles.

President Trump unleashed a xenophobic tirade against Somali immigrants on Tuesday, calling them “garbage” he does not want in the United States as he tried to refocus public attention on his anti-immigration themes.

“These are people who do nothing but complain,” Mr. Trump said at the tail-end of a cabinet meeting at the White House. “They complain, and from where they came from, they got nothing.”

“When they come from hell and they complain and do nothing but bitch, we don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it,” Mr. Trump added as Vice President JD Vance banged the table in encouragement.

Even for a president who has frequently made derogatory comments about immigrants, the rant against Somalis was an alarming use of vulgarity from the White House against an entire community.

Mr. Trump said Somalia “stinks” and “we don’t want them.” He described Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat of Minnesota who came to the United States from Somalia as a refugee and became a citizen 25 years ago, as “garbage.”

“We could go one way or the other, and we’re going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country,” Mr. Trump said. “She’s garbage. Her friends, garbage. These aren’t people who work. These aren’t people who say ‘let’s go, come on, let’s make this place great.’”

Mr. Trump has long been fixated on Somalis in the United States — and in particular Ms. Omar.

“The congresswoman thinks his obsession with her is unhealthy and hopes he gets help,” Jacklyn Rogers, a spokeswoman for Ms. Omar, said earlier on Tuesday.

The comments followed a familiar playbook for Mr. Trump. He has often sought to refocus attention on his exclusionary immigration policies and rhetoric, particularly when his administration is facing pressure or crises on other fronts. Mr. Trump has most recently faced pressure from Democrats, as well as some of his own allies, on the issue of affordability, as well as legally debated strikes against vessels in the Caribbean.

ADVICE ON PLANTING AVOCADO SEEDLINGS.

Before you plan to plant avocado seedlings, there are things you need to know and keep in mind.

1) That avocado plants need deep loose soil.
2) That avocado seedlings can grow in the southern region of Nigeria excluding the coastal strip because of the saline nature of the soil.
3) We currently don't have up to 10 hectares of standards Hass Avocado farm in Nigeria not to talk of meeting the current demand for avocado fruits.
4) We have three main varieties of grafted avocado

i. Hass avocado
ii. Fuerte Avocado
iii. Pinkerton
However, there are over 50 varieties of Avocados and the value of the varieties fall in that order.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE PLANTING AVOCADOS
I want to categorically state that in planting avocados, the holes are the most important investment. I have said earlier that avocados need deep loose soil and if you don't provide such condition, be sure you are wasting yourself. Most people do make mistake of digging a very big hole, remove the soil and then plant the seedling down there, that one is VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!!

HERE ARE WHAT TO DO
~Do at least a 3ft by 3ft by 3ft hole
~Mix the top soil with manure (possible 1 wheelbarrow of manure)
~ Before you return the soil with manure, look for leaves, grass etc and place them at the bottom of the hole, then return the soil back to the hole until it's about to be filled them plant your seedling.
~ Ensure you don't cover the stem beyond where it reached in the bag/tube
~ Of importance to note is that avocados don't like water logging. Don't leave a hole that will retain stagnant water, this will lead to rotting of the plants.
-Space your plant at least 5-6 metres apart.
