PRESIDENCY SUMMONS IGP OVER POLICE PROTEST source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/07/presidency-summons-igp-over-police.html The presidency yesterday summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum-Idris, over a protest by hundreds of Mobile policemen serving in Borno State. The Police personnel were said to have protested over non-payment of their monthly salaries and allowances. The IGP who was in Aso Rock presidential villa yesterday was seen heading towards the office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari. A top presidency source who preferred to remain anonymous said the IGP was in the villa to brief the presidency on the Police protest. The policemen had reportedly blocked the Maiduguri-Kano road, the only free exit in and out of Maiduguri, in protest of nonpayment of their seven months allowance by the Police authority. The protest that lasted for hours forced commuters to ply alternative routes as a result of the reverberating sound of gunshots from the front of the Borno State Police Command headquarters where the protests took place. A male mobile policeman who spoke to Eyes Of Lagos on condition of anonymity said while their military counterparts in the Joint Taskforce operation in Borno are not owed any penny, the police authority has refused to pay their own allowances for the past seven months. The Police officer who did not want his name in print for fear of victimisation added that their employers do not owe even members of the Civilian Joint Taskforce run by Borno State government. “We are not happy with what is happening. For the past seven months, we have not been paid our allowances. We have no accommodation; most of us are sleeping in the open field despite the danger of the zone we are operating. Some of us in the local government areas who are there to restore civil authority in the liberated Communities are faced by hunger and starvation as a result of this,” the source said. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has denied that policemen protested in Maiduguri over non-payment of their special duty allowance. The Force PRO, Jimoh Moshood, said, “It is not correct that police personnel protested in Maiduguri today, July 2, 2018 (yesterday). Some of the Police Mobile Force personnel on Special Duty in Maiduguri went to the Borno State Police Command Headquarters on enquiry over the delay in the payment of their special duty allowance in the early hours of yesterday and not on protest as reported in some media. “The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, promptly directed the Commissioner of Police, Borno State, to address and inform them why there is delay in the payment of their special duty allowance, and also assure them that since the budget has been approved, the allowances will be expeditiously processed and paid without any further delay. They subsequently returned to their duty posts. “The IGP has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Police Mobile Force (PMF) to proceed to Maiduguri, Borno State and other states in the North East where PMF personnel are deployed on special duty; to lecture and inform them on the efforts being made by the Force to ensure timely payment of special duty and other allowances to police personnel in the North East of the country”. The Force spokesman maintained that the Police Mobile Force personnel that embark on the voyage of enquiry are not those attached to Operation Lafiya Dole in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast. According to Moshood, they are in the category of visiting Police Mobile Force units deployed in Maiduguri on crime prevention and other Police duties in the state. “Members of the Public in Maiduguri, Borno State are hereby enjoined not to panic but to go about their lawful duties and other responsibilities without fear or apprehension”, he added

DAVIDO’S “ASSURANCE FALZ’S “THIS IS NIGERIA” LEAD NIGERIAN SONGS RELEASED IN MAY 2018 source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/06/davidos-assurance-falzs-this-is-nigeria.html Davido’s song, ‘Assurance’ emerged as the hottest Nigerian song released last month, May 2018. Following the Afrobeat song is the controversial song, ‘This is Nigeria’ by Falz. These songs and eight others was obtained from statistics from online downloads and streaming devices like iTunes, Spotify, Youtube, radio airplay and other download devices. The list which was published in a magazine gave Assurance, the song which caught a buzz after the song owner Davido bought a Porsche for his girlfriend, Chioma on her birthday last month. With this, Davido remains the hottest and perhaps the most bankable Nigeria music artiste as result of his feat last year wresting the pinnacle and bragging writes from his rival now friend, Wizkid. The DMW label owner may just win the BET Int’l Act 2018 award holding later this month. Falz who is fast becoming the most dominant rapper cum entertainer in Nigeria, has his trending song, ‘This Is Nigeria’ as the second most downloaded song in May 2018. The song was a subtle way of speaking out about the ills of the country which is laudable as musicians ought to do advocacy when the time arises. The video though stoked controversy because of the use of hijab-wearing ladies dancing to the song beats. Though the Censors board, NFVCB has come out that Falz didn’t bring the video for licensing, it may just have made the song more popular and arousing curiousity. The third song is Baba by DJ Spinall Ft Kiss Daniel. Others on the list include Fake Love by Duncan Mighty Featuring Wizkid, Selense by Harrysong featuring Kiss Daniel & Reekado Banks, Olamide’s song, Kana made the list as the sixth others song released in May. The rapper who is set to get married to his baby mama soon surprisingly didn’t get any award at Headies held last month despite his hardwork. But Kana by Olamide Ft Wizkid is sure a dope song. The other last four songs are, Overload by Mr Eazi Ft Slimcase & Mr Real, 2geda by Korede Bello, Ebeano Internationally by Mr P (P Square) and My Dear by DJ Big N Ft. Don Jazzy & Kiss Daniel. The list shows that Mr P’s solo career is gradually gaining momentum. Why not? He seems the most hardworking of the duo and has a dancing skill and themed song to explore. Also Assurance which both audio and video got released on May 1st of currently has over 7million views on YouTube. Source : Eyes Of Lagos

A resident, Andu Usman, who spoke to Eyes Of Lagos said: “The blackout has been witnessed since last Thursday simply because residents protested unjustified bills that were served around. “I can assure you there is no technical fault that could have been responsible for the blackout. The simple reason was that people protested against the unjustifiable estimated billing. The blackout was deliberately meted out on residents.” Commenting on the moves by the residents to ensure power was restored to the community, Usman said “we have been to their office and they are fully aware of the blackout. The response from the EKEDC management was that if people are not ready to pay, they should brace up for three months blackout.” When asked about the genesis of the struggle, he said residents of the community had collated bills from various houses served estimated bills by EKEDC. He noted that the worried residents served estimated bills chose to protest the decision by the disco company leading to the blackout in the area. Another resident of Ebute Metta who confirmed the blackout to Eyes Of Lagos, however, said the development might not be connected to the recent protest by the residents. “The blackout in the community is true. I last had power on Wednesday night and since then, power is yet to be restored. “I assume there might be a fault somewhere the power company is working on because I don’t want to believe it was connected to the protest. They can’t throw everyone into darkness because some set of people protested against estimated billing.” When contacted, an official of EKEDC in Ebute Metta refused to comment on the incident. The official, however, said the management would make public its position when due.

N720BN CURRENCY SWAP DEAL ATTRACTS NIGERIAN BANKS TO CHINA source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/05/n720bn-currency-swap-deal-attracts.html There are indications that the naira may begin to gain strength in the days to come as Nigerian banks conclude plans to open shops in China. This followed the pact signed by both the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) on a RMB15 billion (about N720 billion) currency swap. With the swap, some banks with international licence but without presence in China have begun processes to open shop in the Asian giant. Eyes Of Lagos findings reveal that some tier one banks with presence in Europe and other African countries have applied to the CBN to obtain approval to open shop in China. An insider in one of the top tier banks confirmed to our correspondent that talks are already ongoing in the bank on opening shop in China, even as the bank would soon be seeking regulatory approval. But tier 2 banks are wary of spreading their tentacles so as not to incur more operational costs that would eat into their profits. A source in one of the tier 2 banks with international licence told Eyes Of Lagos that the bank management is being cautious of spreading too fast and would rather stick to its growth plan. According to the source, the management is working towards achieving a tier one status before expanding outside the country. Analysts believe that the swap will cut back the demand for dollar, as Nigerian businesses require more Chinese currency, though the value of the naira weakened slightly at the Investors and Exporters’ Window last week and remained stable at the parallel market. According to lead analyst at FXTM, Lukman Otunuga, there is a possibility that the naira will strengthen from the currency swap deal, as the demand for Dollar drops. He noted that the swap deal will not only improve the speed, but also the convenience of transactions between both nations. Otunuga said investor’s sentiment towards the Nigerian economy is being elevated, after the CBN “finally signed a bilateral currency swap agreement with China”, a pact that aims to provide sufficient liquidity to Nigerian and Chinese industrialists. Similarly, analysts at Afrinvest West Africa described the agreement between the two countries as a positive development, given the foreign currency liquidity squeeze Nigeria frequently experiences and the strong trade and investment ties between the two countries. According to figures provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), merchandise trade between China and Nigeria reached a record high of N2 trillion in 2017 representing 8.7 per cent of total merchandise trade in the country. This makes China Nigeria’s third largest trading partner after India and the United States accounting for 12.5 per cent and 10.8 per cent of merchandise trade respectively. However, the Balance of Trade is heavily tilted in favour of China as imports of N1.8 trillion from the Asian giant in 2017 was 8.1 times Nigeria’s export of N220.6 billion and accounts for 20.9 per cent of total imports in the last five years. Analysts at Afrinvest noted that the swap pact would reduce currency transaction cost for importers and ease forex liquidity pressures in periods of exchange rate volatility and scarcity. “The implementation of this currency swap will also enhance financial stability and external reserves management by reducing the volume of forex interventions in the local market needed to fulfill imports demand”, they noted. The analysts also said the agreement could serve as a risk management and unconventional monetary policy tool as probable losses resulting from transactions affected by volatility in the local currency could be hedged and minimized. “As an unconventional monetary policy tool, in managing third currencies pressures and liquidity, the importance of the bilateral currency swap agreement between Nigeria and China cannot be neglected”, they added. However at RMB15 billion, analysts say the Swap Line, which could barely cover 40 per cent of Nigeria’s Chinese import in a single year, will limit the impact on the economy. They listed as a key downside risk to the agreement, the ease of transaction with a highly competitive country like China, saying it could worsen Nigeria’s trade balance and weaken domestic manufacturing capacity. “We think this concern is justified, particularly in a period of heightened trade skepticism. Yet it also emphasises the need to deepen domestic policies on improving competitiveness”, the Afrinvest analysts stated in an emailed note.

CHRISTIANS PROTEST, URGE SACK OF SERVICE CHIEFS OVER KILLINGS source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/04/christians-protest-urge-sack-of-service.html Christians across the country yesterday protested against the killings of their fellow believers and other innocent citizens in Benue State. Following the killing of two Catholic priests and 17 other worshippers in a church in Benue last week, the Christian Association (CAN), directed all Christians in the country to protest peacefully on their church premises, demanding an end to the callous disregard for human life. In compliance with the directive, the Christians in Ibadan, Oyo State yesterday staged a peace protest to condemn the Benue killings and passed a vote of no confidence in the service chiefs. They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack them and restructure the nation’s security apparatus. The protesters who also blamed President Buhari for what they described as poor handling of security in the country and excesses of Fulani herdsmen, threatened to campaign against him if the killings of Christians continue. CAN President, Dr. Supo Ayokunle, who worshipped at the Oritamefa Baptist Church, Ibadan led the church leaders, women groups, youth groups, children, choristers and others to carry out the protest within the premises. Ayokunle said the people had lost faith in the security operatives in the country, and as such should be sacked and replaced with people with fresh ideas. According to him, the current government is at the risk of losing the 2019 general election if it would not guarantee the security of the citizens. Inscriptions on some of the placards carried by the protesters read: “CAN says No to Violent Killings”, “FG, stop this wicked act”, “CAN says No to Religious Killings”, “FG, release Leah Sharibu from Captivity”, “Enough of Bloodshed in Nigeria, CAN rejects FGN poor handling of insecurity”, “Human beings are more valuable than cattle, protect human beings”, “FG be sensitive to families that are mourning”, “No more excuses for mass murder” and “Enough of unlawful killings in the country.” In Osogbo, Osun State, the Christians gathered at the popular Olaiya Junction, to register their anger. Pastor Femi Abiola of the Calvary Baptist Church, Osogbo who led the protest said the action was necessary to draw global attention to the challenges Nigerian Christians are going through at the hands of insurgents and herdsmen. Abiola who lamented the seemingly perpetual killings of innocent Christians and kidnapping of their children in some parts of the country said that the Federal Government should be more alert to its responsibilities. “We are all aware of what happened in recent times in Benue State where some people were worshipping their God and two priests were murdered by some fundamentalists, probably in the name of religion. “We are also aware of the kidnapping of innocent children, our daughters and when others were released, one was never released because she refused to deny her faith. There are cases of killings here and there, innocent Christians have been massacred now and then. There should be a stop to these killings and irresponsible act on the part of some people,” Abiola said. Members of the First Baptist Church in Kaduna staged a peaceful protest within their premises. They carried placards with various inscriptions such as “Enough is enough”, “We demand immediate release of Leah Sharibu”, “Enough of unlawful killings in Nigeria.” The leader of the church, Reverend Banjo Ajao said the protest became necessary to draw the attention of policymakers to the unnecessary killings and abductions ravaging the country in recent times. “We are doing this in compliance with the directive from CAN. The government must go beyond the issuance of condemnation statements and do its primary responsibility of protecting life and property. It is what they swore to do while taking over the mantle of leadership.” The protest was also observed in Kogi State yesterday. The CAN members displayed placards to express their displeasure with the ongoing killings across the country. The state chairman of the association, Bishop John Ibenu, told newsmen after the protest in his church in Lokoja that there was the need for the Federal Government to set up a truth and reconciliation commission over herdsmen attacks. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Ibenu said: “It is a national day of prayer and protest, Christians don’t protest, if we have to, that means the issues have reached the peak. We spend time to pray for the nation and Kogi State and also for the future. Kogi CAN is obeying the directive of the national CAN to protest peacefully on our church premises. “The killings have continued unabated and they been taken to the church. There were no grasses for cattle to eat in the church when the Fulani invaded it and killed worshippers, so what has started on the farm came to the village and has entered the church. “Government must act to make sure that this is not something aimed at the church. We are being proactive by calling for attention before it degenerates, we do not want to be pushed to a point where we will start using the pulpits to tell everyone to look for available arm to defend themselves.” Most churches in Benue State observed the protest on their premises. When newsmen went round some of these churches in Makurdi, the state capital, worshippers in all the denominations were seen wearing black attire, signifying mourning mood. At the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Wadata, close to the Federal Medical Centre, most of the parishioners, especially women, did not wear necklaces, earrings and shoes as a sign of grief over the killings. One of the parishioners, Mrs. Mbafan Atser, said with disgust that President Muhammadu had failed Nigerians, particularly Benue people that voted for him massively. Her Words: “As you can see, we the women of this parish decided to come to church without footwear, necklaces and earrings in solidarity with those killed in our state.” At NKST Church in Iyorter along Makurdi-Gboko, where the state CAN chairman presides, the entire worshippers were put on black wears, praying and raining curses on the killer herdsmen. The Associate Pastor, Rev. Samuel Terungwa Ackaudu, said they embarked on the peaceful protest within the church to tell Nigerians and the whole world that there was total darkness in Benue and that God was angry with President Buhari. “In Benue state, we have realised that our lives are no longer valuables. It has come to a stage that it’s better to be a cow than to be a human being. The Federal Government should stand up to its responsibility by defending the life and property of our people, state and Nigeria.” There were also protests in Nasarawa, Ekiti, Taraba, Ondo and Kano states as well as Abuja.

IT IS NOW IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR PVCS IN LAGOS source : http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/04/it-is-now-important-to-have-your-pvcs.html Ahead of the forthcoming 2019 general elections in Lagos State and other parts of the country, the Lagos State government has announced that adequate arrangements have been firmed up to massively mobilize residents for the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) to enable them fully participate in the elections. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Mr. Benjamin Olabinjo, it is important for residents to utilize the opportunity of the ongoing continuous voters’ registration to obtain their PVCs. He said aside the need for residents who recently attained voting age to register, it was also necessary for those who relocated to the state or from one part of the state to another to apply for transfer, and thereby have the opportunity of electing leaders of their choice in the next political dispensation. According to him: “On the issue of PVC, we are trying our possible best to ensure that we achieve our aim. For instance, as a result of the development we are bringing to all parts of Lagos State, people are now relocating from one part of the State to the other and there is need to also sensitize people in such category to apply for transfer of their PVCs. “We are all aware that the Governor recently commissioned 21 roads and two bridges in Alimosho and those who hitherto have undeveloped properties in the affected communities but living in Surulere and others areas are now developing their properties and moving back. “As we speak, we are working to ensure that people in such category get the transfer of their PVCs as well as those who are yet to register to do so for them to participate in the election,” he said. Olabinjo, who admitted that it was true that Lagos had the highest number of uncollected PVCs, however, expressed optimism in the fact that the ongoing advocacy by the State Government through his office would ensure a considerable reduction in the figure. “We have been sensitizing residents in all our programmes that it is important for them to obtain their PVCs. We have all been saying that Governor Ambode is doing well and the only way to appreciate the Governor for the massive transformation of the State in all sectors and sections is for residents to get their PVCs to support him to continue the good works,” he said.

AMBODE MARKS WORLD MALARIA DAY IN MAKOKO SLUM source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/04/ambode-marks-world-malaria-day-in.html The Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has urged Lagosians and Nigerians in general, to be more concerned with preventing rather than curing malaria infection. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, She made the disclosure in Oregun in Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, when her pet project, Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), distributed over 3000 insecticide-treated nets, at Makoko community, Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), as part of activities to mark 2018 World Malaria Day. According to her, a situation where a child dies every two minutes from malaria around the world is unacceptable adding malaria accounts for an alarming global average of 400,000 deaths annually, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) accounts. She said that efforts should be geared towards a robust prevention of the scourge, with wide-spread use of nets, in-door spraying with insecticide and preventive treatment of expectant mothers. According to her; “We cannot fold our arms and allow malaria to continue to ravage our society. This epidemic has claimed too many lives, whether in our country, Africa or the world in general. Thank God it is not a disease without prevention or cure, and since it has both, the easier way out is to prevent it. “The World Health Organization tells us that more than 400,000 malaria deaths still occur annually, and at least one child dies of the infection every two minutes around the world, this is bad enough. It cannot go on this way, we need to scale down the ugly trend, by doing more to prevent rather than chase after cure.” She noted further that the theme for this year, ‘End Malaria for Good’ was attainable, if governments, NGOs, stakeholders and individuals, worked together to combat the epidemic. She specifically appealed for more investment in malaria prevention, as well as greater funding for malaria control in endemic countries, stressing that this would aid the attainment of WHO’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria projection of 40 per cent reduction in cases and deaths by 2020. Addressing the community members, Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Hon. Kayode Omiyale, thanked the founder of HOFOWEM foundation, for celebrating 2018 World Malaria Day with the community. He appealed that their environment should be kept clean at all times to avoid breeding mosquitoes, and that personal and community hygiene should be taken as a priority.
