Context is important — in order to reduce the number of international students, IRCC has become more strict.

It was much easier to get a study permit in 2021, 2022, or 2023 with just the minimum required funds because IRCC was focused on increasing numbers.

Before 2024, they would often overlook certain issues to boost international student intake.

He reapplied on the 28th of July, 2025. For larger context, his first application was on the 6th of June, 2025 and was refused on the 21st of June, 2025 (15 days after). He applied for the GCMS notes which took about 30 days, according to him, the gmcs notes posited that the only reason his application was refused was because the source of funds of his sponsor was poorly documented even though he did GIC of a year's living expenses and had paid one semester tuition fee. Upon seeing the notes, he contacted his sponsor who provided further documents with additional bank statements showing how the sponsor raised his funds. He said he reapplied because the GCMS notes centered on the source of funds and he was sure that with further explanation with documents and bearing in mind that his first refusal came within 15 days/ upfront medicals, that he could get it this time...........

To be honest, using the webform and waiting is the only thing that can be done for now.

IRCC can be slow sometimes, and it’s frustrating. The only time I’ve seen them respond quickly is when someone is applying for a visitor visa — for example, a citizen applying for a visitor visa for their parents. In such cases, if IRCC is taking too long, the applicant can notify their Member of Parliament (MP), and the MP will contact IRCC on their behalf.

Aside from situations like that, there’s very little — if anything — that can speed things up. Since this is a student visa application, the only realistic options right now are to use the webform and wait.

There's no formula for all these things. I will give an example of all the red flags in my own case. 1. Used a sponsor 2. After sponsor transferred "living expenses" to my account, he has less than a million in his business account and less than 5m in his personal account. 3. I already have a b.sc and applied for Diploma. 4. Age was way way above 30. 5. Married with children and wife wasn't working and no mention of how wife and children will feed. 6. POF was lump sum and it lasted just 2 weeks in the account before account was printed.

Upon all the "red flags" it was approved. I think it's just based on V O discretion

You see, I like when people share their personal experiences about how their case went — but sometimes the full context is missing.

In your case, your sponsor transferred money for living expenses, but there’s no mention of how your school fees were paid. How much does your sponsor’s business generate each month?

Your spouse gave you a gift deed showing they were sending you the money as a gift for living expenses, which is legal and makes sense. This explains the lump sum, since it came from your sponsor’s account.

I’m sure your sponsor stated that the money sent to you was a gift, that they are not expecting it back, and that you will use it for your schooling and other expenses.

Your sponsor sent that lump sum to your account to show they had handed the funds over to you as the student. The lump sum itself is not the problem — the issue arises when the money comes from an unknown account.

I’m also sure your spouse provided their account statement to show the money was moved from their account to yours.

Yes, visa officer discretion plays a role, but they also consider the dependants you and your sponsor have.

There are many types of diploma programs offered by most colleges, and even within each program there are variations — so age is not really a factor.

People have come with a B.Sc. and still applied for a diploma program. If you have a low 2.1 or a 2.2 CGPA, it won’t necessarily raise a red flag when moving from a B.Sc. to a diploma program.

PR points with a diploma have limited chances right now, except in French, and I’m sure you want to give yourself the best possible chance for success after school.

That’s why, right now, Badadvisor is frustrated — because he’ll have to marry his 150 kg white girlfriend for PR.

Being married with a wife who is not currently employed and having children is not a red flag.

Children back in Nigeria are actually an advantage, as they give you a reason to return (home ties )— more of a green flag.

So, context is important. That’s why I said Proof of Funds (POF) can be tricky — always keep yourself in the best possible position.

If your exclusion order was only for one year, you served the full period, and you left Canada on time, it likely won’t block your PR application in the future — as long as you are honest, provide proof, and have no other inadmissibility issues. Yes and no — but every case is different.

Let me explain. During Proof of Funds (POF) assessment, many factors are calculated and taken into consideration.

I do not know your exact situation, but in most cases where a sponsor (such as a parent) is providing POF, IRCC will also look at the number of siblings the applicant has. They will consider how the money for POF came in, and whether the sponsor will be able to get that money back quickly. This is because IRCC knows that parents may also have other children (brothers or sisters of the applicant) who depend on them financially.

Therefore, it’s always good for your sponsor to show that even after giving you the full amount required for one year’s living expenses and your remaining tuition fees, they still have enough to take care of the remaining siblings’ fees and general family upkeep. It should also be clear that the business or job they have can generate that amount back over a short period of time.

That is why it’s always better to have more than just the exact one year’s living expenses and tuition fee amount in your POF.

POF can be tricky. For example:

Case 1:
Someone has ₦65 million from the sale of family land, not from a regular business or job. Their total school fees and living expenses are ₦45 million, and they are the second child in the family while the first child is already studying in the UK. IRCC might deny the visa, saying there is an insufficient POF, because they know the family will still need to pay school fees for the first child.

Case 2:
An only child or last-born child has ₦55 million, while their school fees and living expenses total ₦45 million. The parents are retired and on pension. This applicant might get the visa because there are no additional family responsibilities.

Remember, when filling out your application forms, you give IRCC the names and details of your family members and their current situations.

So you see, it’s not just about the amount of money. It’s also about the dynamics — the sponsor’s job or business, the family’s responsibilities, and the siblings’ situations.

No one knows the exact amount because IRCC can be running mad, but it’s always good to show that you have the money and more plus available at any time and that it’s not a problem. Your sponsor should also be able to pay at any time.

I’m just being moderate with my figures, but trust me — you can work in Canada legally to help pay for international student school fees, except if you’re in a very cheap, super cheap school like:

What You Can Do

1. Answer the Question Honestly
Since you don’t currently have a job or business in Nigeria, you should answer “No” to that question. Do not say "Yes" or misrepresent anything—IRCC verifies facts.

But just answering “No” doesn’t mean an automatic refusal. It just means you have to compensate by strengthening other parts of your application. eg

Bank statements showing strong personal savings

UK employment history (offer letter, reference letter, payslips)

Travel history, if you’ve visited other countries and returned

Family ties in Nigeria (parents, siblings, spouse/kids, if applicable)

Intent to return — explain your next steps after visiting Canada

2. Explain the Situation in a Letter of Explanation (LOE)
Prepare a short, well-written Letter of Explanation to upload under “Optional Documents” or wherever you see “Letter of Purpose/Explanation.”

In it, mention:
That you lived and worked in the UK for the past 3 years (with proof like offer letters, payslips, etc.).

You recently returned to Nigeria in July 2025, but do not plan to stay long-term, hence have not sought employment.

Be honest You’re currently in between jobs but have strong travel intent, financial means, and reason to return

Let’s look at the numbers:

The minimum wage in Nova Scotia will be $16.50/hour starting October 1, 2025.
During holidays (when you’re allowed to work full-time), the maximum you can earn is:

$16.50 × 40 hours/week × 4 weeks = $2,640/month before tax
After tax, that's about $2,400month
But your monthly rent, food, and bills could easily reach $1,500 (and that’s being conservative).

Keep in mind, this level of work is only possible during school breaks—usually a maximum of 4 months per year for international students.

So you can’t rely on working in Canada to pay for tuition. The math just doesn’t support It's better to plan ahead financially and avoid unnecessary stress.

Submit the official scholarship award letter (from the Nigerian organization). It must be on official letterhead, signed, and state:

Payment schedule and to who the money is going to you or the school directly (lump sum or installments).

Include your school’s scholarship award letter too.

Explain in your Letter of Explanation (LOE) that you’re fully funded by a scholarship and have no dependents, so you are financially covered

If the scholarship clearly covers all costs and looks reputable and verifiable, you do not need to show personal bank funds. But if there’s any gap in coverage or ambiguity, IRCC might ask for additional POF or clarification.

To be safe: Try to get the scholarship body to specify what expenses the $50,000 covers (ideally both tuition and living).

If the funds are being sent directly to you or your school, include evidence or confirmation.

My question is if I imputed November 15 as intended travel date and our visa comes out in maybe in August or September, does the visa start counting from September or does it start counting from November 15.

The visa starts counting from the day it is issued.
If it's issued in September, it starts counting from that same month.

Normally, IRCC tends to issue visas to high-risk applicants just a few days before the intended travel date—or even after.

But your profile does not appear to be risky.

I'm all in support of birth tourism, but it’s very expensive. ₦13 million is a good amount, but it may not be enough — you can try, but honestly, it’s tough and rejection is sure coming from Nigeria

To be safe, keep your bank balance at a minimum of $25,000 CAD, with the money easily accessible.

If you have a valid U.S. visa, your visa processing may be faster. But without one, it’s unlikely you’ll get a Canadian visitor visa approved in just one month — welcome to IRCC bureaucracy.

Remember, your visa validity starts from the day it’s issued, not the day you arrive. At the Port of Entry (POE), officers may question you if you arrive earlier than the date you gave in your application.

Birth Tourism – POE Checklist (Top Issues):

Yes, he can use the teaching experience for his Canada immigration profile, even without an education degree — as long as the job was paid and full-time, and his duties match an eligible NOC.

He may not qualify under the “Secondary School Teacher” NOC (41220) since that usually requires a degree in education. But he might qualify under “Teacher Assistant” (NOC 43100) or another similar NOC, depending on what exactly he does at the school.
