This question has been a source of argument between me and my friends,so I decided to bring it to Nairaland to seek your opinions on it..I left my parent's house to rent a room with a friend at the age of 19.I got admission to a higher institution in the same state that they are and my house(off campus) is a 15 min walk to their house and I always visit them twice a week.My Mum and Dad were like you are too young to stay alone and we wont allow you to leave now.But I told them plainly that I just dont want to be under them anymore.I left at a time when the ovation was high,I dont want it to come to a stage when they will start saying"your mates are living all alone by themselves"(you know African parents nau). . Please Nairalanders I would like to know at what age is more appropriate for a male child to leave his parent's custody? CC: Lalasticlala,Seun |

Manchester City Footballer Raheem
Sterling was subjected to a barrage
of vile racist abuse after innocently
posting a family snap on Instagram.
The football star uploaded a smiling
selfie with his little girl and his niece,
which he captioned: "Perfect Sunday
with my niece & my daughter
#LaFam." But the 20-year-old's comments were attacked by irate supporters of his former club Liverpool, who posted hate-filled, racist remarks. One vile user branded the forward a "black c***" adding "f*** your stupid family hope they burn". Another posted pictures of snakes and bags of cash with the comment: “All about the money init you f***** snake.” An earlier picture Sterling posted of himself and three-year-old daughter Melody enjoying a day out drew similar abuse. One user posted a long line of banana emoticons with the words "f****** disgrace to mankind" while one shamefully branded Sterling a "monkey". Some users pleaded with the racist users to stop the hate-filled, racist rants and comments. One said: “There’s kids on the picture FFS.” Earlier this year, Sterling’s girlfriend, Paige Milian, had to lock down her social media page after receiving death threats and racist abuse over her boyfriend's transfer. There is nothing wrong with a 20year old footballer looking to advance his career with a bigger club who can pay him a higher salary befitting his contribution to the team and also offer him trophies, so why the hate?

One of the interesting family-related
issues that have been widely debated
and fascinated a number of people is
the perceived (natural) disparity in
intelligence among siblings, that is,
the question of who among siblings
tends to be the most intelligent;
whether it’s the eldest or youngest.
While many people seem to agree
that the youngest child often enjoys
mild treatment from parents and
older siblings, there seems not to be
a consensus on who among siblings
is the most intelligent and smartest,
coupled with the fact that personal
effort could make such ranking
ineffective. But, thankfully, some
scientists seem to have found the
answer to this long riddle.
A study has found that the eldest
child (firstborn) is more likely to be
more intelligent or have higher IQ
and that the difference in their
intelligence quotient could be about
1.5 points, down the line. The study noted that the reasons could range from parents’ undivided attention, which makes them to be more disciplined, to the fact that they tend to have a boost in their intelligence when they teach their brothers and sisters, which is a benefit of teaching others. A study by the Leipzig University, which analysed IQ results of about 20,000 people in the UK, according to Mail Online, showed a clear fall in IQ among siblings according to their age. A researcher, Dr. Julia Rohrer, explained that the reasons for eldest children being brighter could be traced to upbringing. She said, “While the firstborn gets full parental attention, at least for some months or years, late-borns will have to share from the beginning. “Another possible factor is described by the tutoring hypothesis: A firstborn can tutor his or her younger siblings, explaining to them how the world works and so on. Teaching other people has high cognitive demands, because the children need to recall their own knowledge, structure it and think of a good way to explain it to younger siblings, which could provide a boost to intelligence for some firstborns. However, eldest children shouldn’t gloat, because they won’t always be the cleverest. “And according to Rohrer’s calculations, in a two-child family, the eldest will have the higher IQ six times in 10, a statistics that still gives younger children opportunity to shine.” Another study by the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States, published on elitedaily.com , also found out through an intelligence test that eldest children were more intelligent than their younger ones. The researcher said it could be because the parents had enough time to raise the firstborn child and instill discipline in them, unlike for other children when they could have been exhausted with raising kids. They said another reason could be that the older children tend to be smarter by teaching their young siblings, which would make them know better, coupled with the fact that eldest children strive not to be outdone by their younger siblings. Beyond those reasons, a previous study by some scientists from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, as earlier discussed on this page, found that the Omega-3 fats stored around women’s butts and thighs, called gluteofemoral fat, promote brain development. Given the deposit of these brain neurons (Omega H3) in and around women’s butts and thighs, the transmission of same during pregnancy, and more importantly, its benefit for the development of the brain, the study further found that the first child of a woman tends to be more intelligent than the successive children because the volume of this fat in the butts tends to be decreasing on each delivery. Thus, the first child tends to be more intelligent, followed by the second, and it trickles down the line. This implies that the lower the volume of Omega H3 available to the baby, the lower the foetal development of the brain. Speaking on the study, Prof. Oni Fagboungbe, a psychologist, said the eldest or the youngest could be the most intelligent, depending on some variables. He noted that the much attention given to the first child could boost the child’s brain cells while the youngest child tend to learn from the elder siblings, combine with he or she has and end up being intelligent. He added, “When we say somebody is intelligent, it simply means the quality of the brain cells, and that is what determines the level of intelligence that we have. So, the much attention given to the first child can boost his or her brain cells. And on the other hand, the synergy and the opportunity to tap experience from the senior ones helps the youngest child to be intelligent as well. “So, it’s not something we can put into a straight jacket because of the variables surrounding the upbringing of children.” Contact: editor@punchng.com Source: punchng.com/2015/10/2538
