You have not made a mistake... You don't just have the right opportunity yet.

Don't put yourself under undue pressure since you have your tutorial center that makes you some money. Be patient and take your time, the right job will come.

No, it is not that I rejected to lecture in mechanical Engineering, he just asked me which department do I want to lecture between Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and I picked mathematics, so he asked why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation. Meanwhile I have made my findings from the HOD of Mathematics and statistics who informed me that they are short of staff and had informed th rector to give them two lecturers because of the workload as they service the whole school.

The only problem I see is you thinking so little of yourself and not being patient. You are a PhD holder, it is only a matter of time before you get settled in, career-wise.


You shot yourself on the leg when you were asked on lecturing in mechanical engineering and you declined. That person asked possibly because there were lore opening in that field. One thing about teaching is that you need to be flexible. You should have accepted to lecture in mechanical engineering and subsequently, when you gain grounds, you can always diversify to lecture math-based courses.


I'll advise you to follow up on the job. Do well to assure your liaison person that your versatility cuts across mechanical engineering as much as it does maths. I would also advise that you spread your wings. You may be sulking over peanuts even a whole peanut plantation awaits you ahead.

Hello guys, I humbly need you all view on this. All my life I have always wanted to be a lecturer, so early this year (January, 2025), I finally got awarded PhD in Applied Mathematics. Though I had my first degree in Mechanical Engineering, masters in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics and PhD in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics as well. During my study, I run a tutorial centre and making cool money from teaching mechanical engineering and mathematics students. So after obtaining my PhD I started sending out my CV to people I know in institutions, though most are of the opinion that I shouldn't have switched from mechanical engineering to mathematics that it will give me problem.

Around January 2025, immediately after my PhD oral examination, my supervisor linked me up with the rector of a polytechnic to go submit my CV to him, which I did, and according to the rector, he told me that it is not matter of CV for now, because most people that he employed as assistant lecturers, they really don't have much to pay them and the governor of the state has promised that he will do recruitment for the polytechnic around March because of accreditation processes, so during that recruitment, I can be employed. Fast forward to March, the accreditation went on and I wasn't informed if the recruitment was later done (you know all this underground stuffs), so I later got my mind off the institution and look at for another university in other states which I was promised also that once there is directives to start recruitment, I will be employed.

On the 3rd of july, 2025, I got a call from someone from the polytechnic, telling me to come to the personnel department as soon as possible with my credentials, when I got there, he collected photocopies of my credentials and on sighting the mechanical engineering as first degree, he said which department do I want and I said mathematics and he said why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation, so I said I preferred mathematics because since I switched to mathematics, I have published 11 academic journal with 7 of them Scopus rated in Q1, and I have also attended 7 seminars with certificate to back them up, and I have also been a member of the Nigerian mathematical society (NMS), so he said they will get back to me.

Since then I haven't heard anything. After a month, I made a call to the person that I submitted my credentials to at the personnel department, that I haven't heard from them and he said "sebi we are the one that called you ourself, the process is ongoing and once we are ready, we will definitely call you back". But I haven't heard from them still. It is almost two months now since I submitted the credentials and I am already losing faith.

I am just confused, could my changing from engineering to science be hindering me from getting a lecturing position? If it is, does it make sense to go back and obtain another master and PhD in mechanical engineering and just forget about the mathematics? Or just forget about lecturing and focus on my tutorials, meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area, but I don't want to be a tutor forever, not even with a PhD.

I think it is hightime students fill up Nigeria to protests on EndAsuu. We all know the government is insensitive in their approach but on the other hand, anyone that didn't work shouldn't eat. How will you redone work on the 14th and expect to be paid a full month salary. Will you as a lecturer also give a student 100% mark if he solved 2 questions out of 4? Your strike has no effect on the government and you know that, the students are the ones that will suffer it.

I have been searching for work since 2016. Though I didn't stop schooling still. I have a bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree in mechanical engineering, a masters of Technology (M. Tech) degree in applied mathematics (Fluid Dynamics) and presently doing my PhD in applied mathematics (Fluid Dynamics). I need a lecturing job in any part of the country.

Irrespective of the course you are studying. you must do physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and use of English at both predegree and 100level in my school, Lautech, Ogbomoso. The school is mainly for science students and the Accounting is not pure Accounting like the commercial students does but accounting technology. Make your research about Lautech, Ogbomoso.

I got a girl in my 100 level while she was doing predegree. we fell in love and move, I studied mechanical engineering and she was later admitted to study accounting. I do teach her maths and physics because they are her weak points and my school being a school of technology ( Lautech) she has no choice than to pass the courses. when I got to 300level she was in 100level and most times she is in my hostel or I am in her hostel. At a point, we rarely spend 6 months in our individual hostels.
When I got to 400level and she was in 200level, I had issues with house rent and she decided we can use her own house rent to get a better accommodation and live together. we started couples life in 400/200 level respectively. Today we are both graduates, we are married, We have a kid and we are expecting another one soon. presently I'm running my doctorate degree and we are planning on she starting her masters but the pregnancy is the one delaying her for now

Hi. I am Oladapo Olayinka, I am very passionate about teaching and wishes to be a lecturer one day. Actually, I am not a 2,2 candidate but circumstances drives me to it because I have to sponsor myself through my education and the only thing I know how to do best is to teach mathematics and physics related courses. While in school, I take tutorials which is what I use to sponsor myself throughout. I don't usually have time to read my own courses that much because I have to be buried in the courses I need to take tutorials of and only have the free one week before exam to read all my own courses. what I do is, I will go to mathematics department and ask for courses that students usually have problems with at all level from 200 to 500 level because my school is a technology school. So I will go and study the courses and master them so as to teach the students offering the courses and get paid for my service. At the end of the day, I graduated with a 2,2 in my own department of mechanical engineering as still has passion for lecturing. While I was doing my NYSC, I applied for masters degree in my school to study applied mathematics, differential equation option because I prefer mathematics to mechanical engineering since all we did in mechanical is also theory and little or no practical and I was admitted and currently running the program and hoping to start my PhD immediately after.
So I want to know, What is my chance of getting a lecturing job with a 2,2 in mechanical engineering and a masters degree in applied mathematics and I want to lecture in mathematics department.

I will advise you to just go learn a trade and don't kill yourself with depression. I have a B-Tech in mechanical engineering with a first class hon and a masters degree in applied mathematics. I got a job of 55k in a quarry company which pays those that Dont even have a degree 260k because they can operate heavy duty machines which I can't because no school will teach that. better snap out of depression.

I was invited for interview in a quarry company and I studied mechanical engineering and have little experience about the practical aspects of engineering. Although I do some little stuffs on my own like wiring a house, installing electrical appliances like ceiling fans and the likes and also repairs generator and sometimes fix some things in my lady machine myself except if it comes to the engine part. Now I want to know, what are the things I need to know before going for the interview because I was told I would be tested if I'm good. Please help a brother.
