When God formed man(Adam) he did not put a soul in Adam he breathed spirit of life into the clay and it became a living soul. The same way at death when the spirit of life depart from the body it becomes a dead soul.

God did not create man and put a soul into him rather man became a soul at the fusion of the breath of life(spirit) with the dust(body) and man became a soul.

Gen. 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The reverse of man's creation is what we experience at death

Ecc.12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
