US Secretary of State John Kerry says Zimbabwe’s elections were “deeply flawed” and results showing Robert Mugabe winning a seventh term are not credible...


“In light of substantial electoral irregularities reported by domestic and regional observers, the United States does not believe that the results announced today represent a credible expression of the will of the Zimbabwean people,” Kerry said on Saturday.

“Though the United States was restricted from monitoring these elections, the balance of evidence indicates that today’s announcement was the culmination of a deeply flawed process,” he said. Kerry pointed to irregularities in voter rolls, unequal access to state media by the candidates, uneven security protection of the election and a failure by the government to implement political reforms.

He called on the Southern African Development Community and the African Union to address their concerns with the election. If the election results stand, Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe would have been given a 7th mandate that will see him extend his 33-year rule.

A court in Dubai was told that a pregnant teen was still a vī́rgin, according to court proceedings....

That was the diagnosis of a doctor in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, presented at the trial of a 15-year-old teen girl, who was accused of violating the country's harsh Islamic law against sēx outside marriage.

The girl, identified only by her initials MM, was checked out and has since given birth to a girl, the local newspaper reported. Testifying against the doctor's report, MM told prosecutors that she had sēx with her 17-year-old boyfriend, identified by the initials YA, on several occasions.

"I met him through the internet and fell in love with him," the girl said. "We have had many dates in my family's house in Oud Mutaina, Dubai, and had sēx in my bedroom after my parents fell asleep. He had full sēx with me three times and when I told him I was pregnant, he didn’t care."

The boy, meanwhile, insists that the two were not sēxually active, according to a local newspaper.
"I did not make her lose her vī́rginity and did not make her pregnant," he told the newspaper. "After a while we broke up. I was surprised when her family was at my house and told me that I made her pregnant."

The boy said that MM was seeing other guys throughout their relationship and demanded a paternity test.
But he admitted to touching the girl, according to a newspaper. The report suggests that girl may have become pregnant from semen dripping into the womb which is highly unlikely to have occurred.

The two teenagers have been subjected to judicial oversight.

A member of the clergy at Gokomere Mission, one of the most revered Roman Catholic centres in the country has been implicated in an adulterous relationship with a married teacher at the school and the matter has since been taken to the church superiors.....


Sources at the school said the husband of the teacher discovered the affair when he suddenly pitched up from South Africa on July 6 2013 and noticed love messages in the wife's phone coming from a member of the clergy. Fr Walter Nyatsanza who is the Church spokesperson cut off calls several times when our news crew raised the issue with him.
Vimbai Wekare Mushava, the lady teacher alleged to be in the adulterous affair warned our news crew against publishing the story. She said election time was dangerous and anything could happen to our news crew staffers if they went ahead with the story.
She however, at one stage said she was not Mushava but when our news crew asked whether the number did not belong to Mushava, she said she stayed with Mushava under one roof and she was just holding her phone. She then demanded to know the person who gave our news crew her mobile number.
When asked why she was commenting on behalf of Mushava, she said this was because she knew that the story was false.
She however, at some stage said our news crew must back-off the story because the Church hadalready resolved it. She then said she had lawyers and she would take our news crew to the cleaners.
"You must remember this is election time and therefore don't regret when something terrible happens to you if you publish that story. Be warned because Masvingo is small. But in any case why do you want to proceed to publish that story when the church has resolved it," asked Mushava.
Brother Erazmas Mundende who is accused of dating Mushava professed ignorance over the incident and referred questions to the lady teacher.

The Director, Midland College, Badagry, Lagos State, Mr. Idowu Akintola, has urged pupils to combine entrepreneurship with formal education......


He said this would reduce the spate of unemployment.

Akintola said this at the school’s graduation ceremony on Thursday.

He gave the example of a directive by the Federal Government that fresh graduates should be exposed to entrepreneurial training while undergoing the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

While addressing graduating students, he urged them not to waste their time while waiting for their West African Senior School Examination results.

A police officer who persuaded a female suspect to perform oral s*x on him while she was held in custody is today facing jail....


Detention officer Kyle Adams, 24, had the illicit encounter with the woman after she was detained at Bethnal Green Police Station in east London.
The woman, who is in her 20s, had been arrested on suspicion of burglary but was later cleared, Southwark Crown Court heard.
She was drunk during the incident, which took place in the station’s custody area between October 1 and 3 last year, said prosecutor Georgina Nicholas.
Wearing a blue and white checked shirt and grey pinstriped trousers, Adams admitted a single count of misconduct in a judicial or public office.
He was due to stand trial today, having originally denied the offence.

But it turns out getting "busy" has benefits beyond the bedroom (or wherever you choose to get it in). Dr. David Weeks, a British consultant clinical psychologist and former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, made us blush with his research that claims regular s*x can make you look younger. In a new study, Dr. Weeks found that older men and women with an active s*x life appeared five to seven years younger than their actual age.

Curious as to whether Dr. Weeks has truly uncovered "the fountain of youth," we asked a few experts to explain exactly how having more s*x is good for our skin.

1. It releases anti-inflammatory molecules. Dr. Amy Wechsler, who takes a whole-body approach to dermatology, credits s*x for its skin-healing abilities. "We're constantly damaging and repairing our skin, and you want to tip the scale more towards repair," said Dr. Wechsler. She explained, "When you have s*x, you're bathing the skin in anti-inflammatory molecules such as oxytocin and beta endorphins. As we get older, we don't heal as often as we repair. But having s*x can turn the clock back on that."

2. It makes your skin physically glow. s*xual intercourse also boosts our immune system, prevents stagnation, allows us to feel more alive and sweat out toxins from our pores, according to Amy Levine, s*x coach and founder of Ignite Your Pleasure. "This translates to our skin's radiance and being more at ease with facial expression (as we use our facial muscles to express ourselves during a s*xual encounter). Ultimately, giving a post-s*x glow and possibly helping to ward off wrinkles," said Levine. Sweating is sure to impart a dewy glow, however Dr. Wechsler said that it is an increase in circulation that triggers the flush. Besides s*x, there is only one other activity that releases the anti-aging hormone oxytocin, and that is childbirth.

3. It prevents dry skin. Another beauty benefit of having regular s*x is that it increases estrogen levels, which stave off dryness and improve skin elasticity. But Dr. Wechsler still believes strongly in using a good daily moisturizer.

4. It clears an acne breakout. Individuals who have more s*x have even been proven to sleep better, and we all know how a good night's rest is connected to skincare. "Breakouts occur more when people are stressed or sleep deprived," said Dr. Wechsler.

"And I think when you boost those anti-inflammatory molecules by having s*x, it is certainly helps treat acne." As a s*x coach, Levine believes "the more, the better." But you don't need to "follow a prescription to figure out what's best for you," she said.

Sexologist Dr. Jill McDevitt echoes this belief, saying "I think people should be having as much s*x as they like, but not because it will make them looking young, specifically. When people make a decision to have s*x, they don't say, 'I really want to boost my immune system and increase my immunoglobulin A antibodies' or 'I want to increase the elasticity of the skin on my face, so let's have s*x.' People have s*x because it feels good, they enjoy it, they like feeling close to someone, they're bored and lonely."

Two to three times a week is the number of times Dr. Wechsler suggests having s*x to stay looking young, as doing it every day may not be realistic.

She also recommends self service because let's face it, not everyone is in a relationship or hooking up. This sexually stimulating act may not release as many endorphins in comparison to doing the "do," but it's helpful.

lIt is therefore not surprising that a large percentage of lecturers across the universities appear incapable of examining repercussions of frequent strikes critically and comprehensively; it is as if they are stymied by marginal improvement in salaries after each strike....


But as we argued last week, there is no clear evidence that such improvement has translated into enhanced quality of teaching and research. Without scientific evidence that indefinite strike is beneficial to various stakeholders in the universities, ASUU’s frequent resort to it, as far as I am concerned, is like traveling in labyrinthine waters without adequate navigational equipment.

So, what is preventing ASUU members from demanding reliable evidence first before canonizing indefinite stoppage of teaching as the only option open to them to make government see reason? One of the frequent and ill-tempered retorts I get from colleagues anytime I suggest a paradigm-shift in our approach to trade disputes with government is “Why should lecturers think out of the box? All the salary increases we got from government thus far have been through strikes. What other option is there?”

This reply is so myopic, so disingenuous, that one cannot really fathom whether it is more an acknowledgement of lecturers’ declining capacity in creative problem-solving or a reflection of the shallow, promotion-motivated, research orientation that is increasingly dominating the mind-set of academics in our institutions of higher learning – I suspect that a combination of both is involved.

However, there are still excellent teachers in various universities who can generate pragmatic novel ideas about how lecturers can get more of what they deserve from government without resorting to frequent strikes.

Unfortunately, the atmosphere within ASUU is always so overwhelmingly in favor of strike that it seems as if members of the union derive some kind of weird psychological satisfaction by staying away from the classrooms.

Hence, the voices of caution and moderation are drowned by cacophonous trumpeters of ASUU “struggle” against “enemies” of university education in Nigeria. Now, is it true that strike is the only option through which ASUU can get its legitimate demands fulfilled by government?

Superficially, it appears as if that is the case, but I do not think so. Indeed, in future, if lecturers fail to restrategize, both the government and Nigerians will be so immunized against strike due to the frequency of its occurrence that the impact would be minimal. At any rate, how many lecturers have really spent time to think deeply about alternative ways of improving their own welfare without frequent disruptions in the system? I believe the number will be negligible.

Of course, if well-meaning academics really put their minds to it, they can come up with novel, less disruptive, avenues that can motivate government to honour agreements with ASUU. Consider this proposal: the union can set up a standing ASUU-FGN Agreement Implementation Lobbying Committee (AFAILOC) whose sole mandate is to lobby the government of the day to maximise implementation of ASUU-FGN agreements. In selecting members of this committee, ASUU has to be clearheaded and pragmatic.

My suggestion in that regard is this: ASUU should identify people that have considerable influence on those in leadership positions and appoint them as members of the committee. For instance, Goodluck Jonathan, Namadi Sambo, David Mark and Aminu Tambuwal are the topmost political leaders in Nigeria today. Each of them has a confidant (or confidants), someone that he listens to and takes advise from. Assuming that Mr. President is known to dote on his wife, it would be a good strategy to use senior female academics to persuade her to join the committee.

The same applies to Sambo and others. Of course, the confidant could be anybody – a former teacher, employer, religious leader or traditional ruler etc. A few sound academics, particularly those with appropriate emotional intelligence for lobbying, should be co-opted into the committee as well. Once the group is in place, it will work underground; its mandate is to meet with relevant government officials at agreed intervals, preferably out of media spotlight, for the sole purpose of persuading government to implement government had agreed with ASUU. Certainly, sincerity of purpose and selflessness on all the parties concerned is a conditio sine qua non for the recommendation to work.

Our proposal has the fundamental advantage of tapping into the goodwill of those that have personal relationships with topmost decision makers in the country who function as a go-between between the federal government and ASUU for amicable implementation of agreements. Again, it is a realistic option among several that can be invented, fine-tuned and tried by lecturers to break the vicious cycle of strike today, agreement tomorrow, and strike yet again and so on.

The recurrent tiresome approach by government and ASUU is a clash of egos. Government and lecturers are always fighting a futile battle of wills to determine who will blink first, with ASUU doing its best to portray government as irresponsible and unreliable, whereas government uses delay tactics to strengthen its case that lecturers are impatient and insensitive to the harsh economic realities of the moment. In the process, university education in the country is jeopardized.

That said, no Nigerian government has met UNESCO’s recommendation that governments should allocate twenty-six percent of their annual budgets to education. The refusal of our leaders to comply is baffling, given the crucial importance of education in the quest for rapid and sustainable national development. Yet, ASUU on its part must realize that all the money in this world, on its own, cannot solve our problems unless there is honesty, sincerity, determination and unwavering commitment and dedication by lecturers, students, university a
uthorities and other stakeholders in the system.

We suggest that government should allow universities that have the requisite capacity to mount viable academic programmes which can generate additional revenue. NUC’s overbearing stance in this regard is suffocating.

For instance, why must NUC compel a solid, upwardly mobile, university like the University of Lagos to stop its evening programme, at a time many people, including lecturers, are benefiting from it? Is it right to force each university, irrespective of its pedigree, location, staff strength, facilities and prestige into the same NUC’s Procrustean bed or straitjacket? Certainly, the crises in Nigerian universities and in the education sector generally predated the current dispensation.

Unfortunately, President Jonathan and other sybaritic top political office holders are not really bothered that university students are out of school for prolonged periods due to strikes by ASUU – why should they, since they have enough money to send their children to better universities abroad.

Similarly, lecturers should recognize that frequent resort to indefinite strikes portrays them as lacking in creativity and imagination, as people who are selfish to the extent of pretending that there is nothing wrong in collecting full salaries even when they have not performed one of the most important duties they are employed to perform – teaching.

I know there are still many dedicated lecturers who truly enjoy teaching despite the harsh conditions in our universities. ASUU should spare a thought for such colleagues too. CONCLUDED.

Move aside Dubai. China now has what is billed as the world's largest building — a vast, wavy rectangular box of glass and steel that will house shops, hotels, offices and a faux ocean beach with a huge LED screen for video sunsets....



The mammoth New Century Global Center that opened last month in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu has 1.7 million square meters (19 million square feet) of floor space — or about 329 football fields — edging out the previous record-holder, the Dubai airport.


The structure is half a kilometer long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high.
The New Century project is a sign that China's growth has spread from the country's more prosperous eastern and southern regions to the west, where wages are lower and the central government has encouraged development with subsidies and tax breaks. With its booming economy, China has become home to some of the largest and tallest buildings in the world.
Backed by local governments, the building in a planned urban district south of Chengdu aims to boost the global stature of the capital city of Sichuan province, known for its spicy cuisine.
Once fully completed, the centerpiece of the building will be a water park with a 400-meter coast and beaches under a gigantic glass dome. Up to 6,000 visitors at a time will be able to sunbathe, play in a wave pool, sip cocktails or feast on seafood. A 150-meter-by-40-meter LED screen will rise above a section of water with videos of an ocean horizon.
The center will include two five-star hotels as well as high-end boutiques set in a replica of a Mediterranean town under faux blue skies. The shopping section has been open to the public since late June, though the building's office space has been occupied for some time.
The building also has a 14-screen movie theater and an ice rink.
