When I lived in Port Harcourt, I was the only bachelor Tenant in my compound.
Customarily on Sunday morning like this, everyone dressed up in their best clothes to church.
I was younger then, so I hung out much. I lived very close to New GRA Phase 2 and 95% of the good night clubs in Port Harcourt are in this area. Hence, my house became a meeting point for friends who wanted to hang out late.
As a result, most Sunday morning, while my neighbors were leaving for church, you see men and women in my apartment from last night's outing, some smoking in my veranda.
I was seen as an outcast and some also rumored that as a young engineer, I must have been initiated into some form of Ogboni-like society. During tenant meetings the husbands often made jokes about my non-religious ways.
When we have power failure that lingered over days, I observed that though I was a night crawler who came back later than most people in the compound, once I put on my Generator most of my neighbors who couldn't put on their own generator will come knocking to charge their phones and lamps.
One day a neighbor's wife came to ask that I drop her off at the church that she wasn't too strong but needed to be in the church program, I obliged her.
While in the car I asked her why she didn't join the other neighbor in their car who they attended same church together, she said they behave badly that she doesn't want to be politely insulted. Not that they kept malice.
I probed her further why they usually send her househelp to come charge their phones in my apartment, despite that other people had their Generators on... and that I observed some other neighbors do same, they don't charge their phones in other neighbors' apartment, but mine.
She said: "Barrister, you are different. As a young boy you don't have time. If I tell you what is happening in that compound, you won't believe it." I said but all of you are always smiling and praying together during home cell fellowship and all.
- Yet, to all of them in my compound then, I was the devil and the sinner because I don't go to church on Sunday. They were the righteous and saints because they are Church goers.
One day, I got a call from my cousin who just came back from abroad after some years. He complained that my mama spoke to him rudely in a family meeting, that he could have responded but restrained considering her children and some of us who are close as friends to him.
I called my mama, she was still furious but I was able to understand that my cousin did no wrong to her personally, it was rather a generic wrong to the family as a whole. But she insisted that I should not speak with my cousin again. I said but he did nothing wrong to you na, she became angrier and said I wanted to take side with my cousin.
I said No. He called me, meaning he wants amicable settlement with you personally. My mama said I should stop talking to the guy... To this, I angrily told her I am disappointed she wants me to keep malice with someone I grew up to know as my brother, that this is the reason I hate Church and Christianity if she who is a deaconess and a Treasurer in her Church would be unwilling to forgive a family member.
My mama kept quiet for sometime and hung up. In the evening she called me back and apologized to me, then said that she has decided to go to my cousin's new house to settle with him. The next morning my cousin called to say that they have resolved the issues and thanked me.
Personally, I believe that we don't need the Bible to know what is wrong and right, and Church is not necessary for you to be virtuous and reasonable.
If you are bad, you are bad. The Bible or Church cannot change who you are. Only you can do it
