Technerdguy:Lol The AMA session is not important. Just about asking questions. You should focus on your grades Although started yesterday's project late but Omo The stress no be here The notes I made alone eh... ![]() Anyways for the git project, try this "git push origin master" |
skyreacher:He added me this morning If you have sent him an email with your number, he will add you soon, please be patient. |
Ebube043:My apologies I just sent it |
Ebube043:You haven't added me yet |
Yutes:Indeed I saw it on Twitter That's a big inspiration |
Emmyxclusive:I have posted it here The reason I post pictures here is to give you guys an insight of what you will be going through so that you can prepare ahead. Meanwhile the guy who volunteered to create a group for the 8th cohort should add me. If you sent me an email and I haven't replied, my apologies! I have been trying to survive ALX. But I will be replying all emails now. |
peanutbutterr:Guyyyy.... I finished my project by 12am yesterday I'm still recovering from the stress We have C quiz today And advanced shell task Since this morning, I have been on Shell materials. Didn't move from an inch from my bed till it was time to go to work. I'm going to continue reading until I feel ready for today's project. |
One thing I realized so far from this program, you can only make it through... - Your peers You need people to help you review your code when you're sure of what you typed but the checker keeps saying "error". I honestly wouldn't have been able to finish my project today by myself. I have colleagues who assist in explaining to me, correcting my mistakes and more. - A senior who is ahead of you in the program! When I saw today's project, I quickly went to the guys who have experienced and done the projects for them to explain it to me. They were a huge help along side my colleague. I always ask questions ahead just to be prepared of what is to come. - Your note I don't wanna believe there's anyone currently in this program that doesn't have a Note? No matter how smart you are, you need to jot down somethings, you can't accumulate everything in the materials. Your note will be there for you when you forgot a word but you know fully well that you have read it before. August cohort, I keep emphasizing on guys because these days we have a lot of projects and very little time, STUDY AHEAD! |
Gawd!! I'm so stressed out even though we haven't started C yet Omo the shell project stressed me oh It got to a point where all the tasks I have done on my sandbox were nowhere to be found. I tried using the sandbox on my phone and I was able but on the system, I couldn't find them. I ended up using Termux (A terminal but the phone version) it is really good. Copied the ssh link, and did the project. Project I started since Morning, I just finished it. I wanna close my eyes and sleep but know tomorrow's project will deal more on advance shell, I will be studying overnight.

Sigh I feel there is a very tiny gap between my sanity and insanity! Since Morning I have been on shell We were given 14 mandatory tasks and 5 advance task on shell. It was so confusing at first but with the help of senior colleagues especially Seunfumi, I was able to scale through. So I was on my 6th tasks when the system started misbehaving, I don't know what or how it happened but all the projects I have done got deleted. I couldn't shout, I couldn't cry. I just sat there dumbfounded staring at the screen. I tried logging into the sandbox with my phone and all the files showed. I decided to use termux (terminal but phone version) to do my projects but still couldn't, after connecting it to my sandbox and changing directory, I couldn't see all the tasks that I have done. This is just shell project and I'm already feeling frustrated. Sigh... ALX projects can make you rethink your life. |
Emmyxclusive:Lol If only it was that easy Do you know why we have checkers? It is because when you are instructed to do a project, you MUST deliver it exactly as you're told. So imagine being told you print ("Hello" you went and typed print(Hello!) The checker will score you wrong! |
Classic1:Sandbox Though some people prefer using their terminal or bash editor. But if you're not using the sandbox, you will have to link your sandbox to your terminal or the editor you chose to use. I prefer the sandbox because I just go in, do the projects and review them to checkers. Note: If the checkers fail you, you have to go back and check what we're doing wrong until you get it. If you ignore the checker that grades your project, it is same thing as failing the project. |
jjparagon:I'm in the middle of a project but will send it soon |
Anon5000:Sure Welcome |
jjparagon:I'm so glad for you, but since you're in the medical field, you are quite brave. These days, everything I do is alx From brush, to thinking, to research! By the way, it will be good if you start preparing ahead. |
jidex4life:I wish I could help but are you with the curriculum for financial analysis? Maybe from there. |
Yutes:Yes A shell script can be run by Linux/Unix using the following - The Bourne Shell (Which is bash) - The C shell - The Korn Shell - The GNU Bourne-Again shell |
Ebube043:Alright Guys starting on August, if you're interested, send your WhatsApp number to this email He will add you to a group, I will also be in that group dropping materials being sent to us by ALX and also dropping pictures of the projects so you can make attempts That way, if you fully start, nothing will be too difficult for you. Please don't drop your number here, please. |
Emmyxclusive:You're welcome This site has detailed tutorials I'm currently reading from there on Shell scripting. Today's project on shell is a no joke. |
jidex4life:If you can manage both and try it. I'm glad to be of help |
I just had an idea!!! After chatting with someone from the 8th cohort, You know 8th cohort is those who will be resuming on August? Anyways here's the idea, I was thinking maybe people from the 8th cohort can create a WhatsApp group and add me, I will send materials for you guys to read ahead and also give you samples of the project to attempt, that way you will be ahead and it could help people who are newbies in programming and reduce the number of participants who easily quit. If you're interested, create the group yourself, someone should volunteer to create it and add others and also add me. Please Please Please I wouldn't want us to derail this thread because of my idea, whoever volunteer to create the group should drop his EMAIL so that others can send their numbers. Please nobody should drop their NUMBERS here or request for materials, that isn't the aim of creating this thread. I hope you all understand. |
Good evening guys Well the two weeks onboarding ended last Sunday and now the real deal starts (According to ALX SE team) C programming language will be a huge determinant factor on who makes it to the first month. Been a busy week seriously We started this new week with projects from last week (Emacs, vi, git and GitHub, shell navigation) Just to ensure we're quite familiar with the editors and command lines. Yesterday project introduced us to "Vagrant" It was quite a tough one, how to set a virtual environment, run command lines and more. The project was supposed to last for 5 days. Today we wrote a general test comprising of the following (HTML, CSS, SQL, shell, Linux, python, C). Have you ever heard of a tech school named Holberton tech school? Browse about it. They actually partnered with alx to make this program a success and we're using same curriculum with them. The whole point I'm trying to make is that it won't be EASY!!! If you browse how much students in Holberton pay then you will realize it is a huge privilege getting it for free. Speaking with some people who have been in the program for long and I discovered the projects are seriously NO joke!!! Especially C because you will be learning basic data structures and algorithms and doing projects immediately. From tomorrow onwards, we will be focused on shell scripting, variables, init files, I/O redirection and so on. When I started alx SE Program, I thought they held their own lectures live before projects but that's not the case. ALX provide you with the best comprehensive materials to help you get insight before proceeding with the projects. As long as you study the materials, you're on your way to becoming a great software engineer. (If you need inspiration, just search on the demand for software engineers and their salaries and you know while you embark through ALX journey, you will be building projects every step of the way. Too amazing). Whenever you click on the eye imagine from the picture below, it will show you details of your projects and their score. Please... I'm seriously begging those yet to start, you need to start learning C language, a lot of people have already dropped from the 7th cohort and some re-registered, honestly I understand because the C projects will involve data structures and algorithms. (Work hard so you won't have to re-register, that's seriously not a good thing!) I'm already combining data structures and algorithms lesson with C programming language. From the third picture, that is where I'm currently learning data structures and algorithm AND that is one of the site that will be sent to you guys by ALX when you start working on C. ALX always sort out the best materials!

jidex4life:Honestly I don't think I should be the one to decide for you but if we're talking about career, I will advise you go for financial analysis. In terms of income and demand, financial analysis has more edge. Either way it's your choice. |
Ebube043:Send me an email Please whoever needs C material should send me an email, I will respond. |
Albertone:I assure you it will be quite stressful but I will encourage you to do it if you can. Besides... I'm a law student myself lol |
Rollins98:Sure Send me a message on my email |
Emmyxclusive:Done |
Guys This message is for all alx students irrespective of your cohort! Today I noticed a lot of people have been evicted and their account disabled. My account was also disabled, I will drop pictures now. But the account that was disabled is my former Cohort account (7th cohort) but I'm currently in the 8th cohort so I'm safe. Here's the thing, even if you have gone far like 5 to 6 months but then you relax and your grades start dropping, you will be evicted! Being in the program strongly depends on your grade. Today I spoke with many people, some whose account were disabled for not reaching the 80% score. One of them spoke about going for a Udemy course, although I tried to persuade him to re-register but then that depends on him. Another guy, who is combining alx program with Zuri (Zuri is similar to alx, like a bootcamp different stacks). Guys guys guys please.... If you are trying to combine alx and other bootcamp program, take it from me, you won't make it past the first month! I asked the guy why he was going through that stress and he said because he needs Zuri certificate ![]() I don't even know how to reply to that response cause, Hello!!!!! Have you seen ALX curriculum? I meant the actual curriculum on the daily activities? In just two weeks, you were made to learn emacs, git and GitHub, vi, shell with projects for each of them and you want Zuri's certificate? I have tried a lot of materials to be frank, from Udemy, Udacity, Coursera, Cs50, YouTube, W3school, freecodecamp... All these are great materials for any dedicated programmer but why don't you search for Software engineering curriculum in each of them, then you would know how generous and amazing ALX curriculum is. Imagine graduating with all that skills from ALX curriculum? Being added to the room to help boost your network and job opportunities, putting out that GitHub with projects as evidence of your skills... I mean, am I the only one who sees this opportunity? Do you know why, after about 30k students apply for the program, only about 3k usually graduate? Because a lot of them were indecisive! Trying to multitask like your brain is a machine, many couldn't keep up with the workload and projects, and you MUST do the projects or be removed, they say beginners can apply but if you apply as a beginner without preparation then you would get frustrated a lot. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO COMBINE ALX SE PROGRAM AND ANOTHER BOOTCAMP COURSE!!!! it's not! You will easily get drained mentally, forgetful because your brain is trying to process a lot at once, don't stress yourself. You won't have time to learn to make research aside from the materials being sent to you because of the many projects from alx. ALX projects are no child play you can easily brush just to do another! When we were told about 6 alx students who were hired by Amazon, I thought it was a bluff until David(who is currently working in Amazon as an software engineer) came to talk to us about his experience. He wouldn't have gotten there by trying to do two program at once. According to him, his was able to pass because... - His peers (I acknowledge this, very important, asking people for help doesn't make you inferior to them, keep pride aside!) - Always study ahead (That is why "planning" is part of your dashboard) Please... If you're going for Alx SE program and you want to make it to the final stage. Get rid of that bootcamp course because certification with projects won't get you a job. Go to LinkedIn or just search on Google for Software engineering jobs and see the opportunities in that field. You know another amazing thing about ALX curriculum, if you graduate with all that skill, you can work as a DevOp engineer, Data engineer, backend developer, frontend, full-stack. It is very EASY to apply but VERY difficult to reach the end. Yes! ALX is hard! Which is why you should go hard towards grabbing the opportunities before you.

KelvinRukky:No! You won't. I was about to speak on it. |
Kedro:Alright I look forward to it |
Mayorla:Seems like you didn't merge the branch or rather, your work didn't merge. Drop your WhatsApp number, let's chat. By the way, you're over the deadline. |
Emmyxclusive:So you will be starting on August? I wish you luck. Just prepare ahead. |

you went and typed print(Hello!)
