19CannyMum: So you cleaned for 2 years and you're coming here to shalaye for somebody that arrived 3 months ago and said he's doing 'basic' work, which could be call centre etc.
Anyway when I visited Vancouver I noticed there were way less black people than in Calgary. Maybe that's why you have these views.
The first time I had a conversation in my office about Nigerians, it was with 2 people who told me that their doctors are Nigerian and they love them. My head was just bursting.
Nigerians are known to be very well educated and driven with good work ethics. Lol cleaned for two years? Parents didn't spend all that money for me to touch a broom for work. I was working as a software developer , first job out of school, Right in the middle of the financial district. I've lived in this country long enough to know what's on ground. I've met some Nigerians where I'm surprised this person was even given visa. By God's grace my time here is coming to an end soon should be bk in naija full-time in the next couple years |

jjohndoe83: Bros rest. Na just 3 months I don spend. And becoming an Exec. is not one day work. Nah so e dey always be. When I used to work downtown no black person was ever working in the offices. All we did was cleaners work , of maintenance. And I worked there for 2 years. We don dey here for too long not enough brothers working in the offices. I don't think I've ever even been interviewed by a black person. There are two types of Nigerians here, the one that went to school and are fresh as Bleep and the others. We don't see the latter enough |

wizean: I am assuming your intent isn't to make a "wash" of me.
There is no dispute in the fact that peoples circumstances would always differ and fingers will never be equal. The post was basically to encourage whoever intends to come over and also to give a clearer picture of what finances might look like.
It is common sense for a newcomer to be modest with expenses and it doesn't necessarily imply one would perpetually remain in that state. Surely, things would get better with time.
If you read between the lines, you will observe that my tenses were in the past but that was actually my reality when I just arrived and I believe it's fairly reasonable for a newcomer. No dissing bro, just curious |

Eaztzide: Any remote role available (any role where one can apply and work from any part of the world)? There are but its hard if ur outside the country. I couldn't even go work from Nigeria even if i've been working from home for the past year because my company doesn't pay taxes there (According to my manager) I cant even work for an american company without a work visa unless there were already in Canada |

wizean: And with modesty and decency, your expenses might not take more than $3000 depending on the size of your family. With a family of 3, my expenses were always below $2500 monthly. Lol how? i have no kids but $2.5k wont cover my rent and car |

jjohndoe83: I just feel like putting this out there for those, who like me at some point, are having doubts about whether or not to move (if Buhari is not enough reason) and that nagging fear of the unknown...I've just been here 3 months, so my experience is only limited to Calgary where I live and may not be broad-based enough, but I can say Canada is not a bed of roses, neither is it a bed of thorns.
If you're humble (and willing to shave off some of the ego that we're conditioned to back home), you will ALWAYS find something to do to pay your bills whilst you work your way to where you want to be, even during this COVID era. So if your concern is immediate survival, you will find something to pay the bills and keep you afloat. Just to give you a clue, between my spouse and I we pull in about $5500 after taxes on our basic jobs (that is we're not working in our fields yet) and we are sorted with change left.
Do not let any stories that you hear discourage you. For every one discouraging story, there are 20 stories of encouragement. Our paths are very different and unique. Keep your faith and optimism intact, Canada can, and will deliver to you what you work for.
Finally, HAVE A REASONABLE AND ACTIONABLE PLAN(S), don't come and coast.
Compliments. Prolly because ur in calgary , its a good place for nigerians. But don't be complacent. We need more nigerian executives in the work place |

wizzzz: I already got one. Although i am still in the US , i intend to land in Canada 2nd week in jan. Will i get the SIN the day i get into canada, i also have to quarantine.
Do you know the process with the pandemic, how quick can i get the SIN I don't think u will but u can try. You'll be given some documents at the border when you "land". Ull need that when you go get ur sin at a separate govt office |

wizzzz: Hello,
When you get a job in Canada, what are the things you will need before you start work.
Is the SIN process long, can i get it in a day considering the COVID situation.
Thank you. They print the SIN number on a piece of paper and give it to you. You will need a sin number to work. Did you have any jobs in mind? |

studentofTruth: The one and only answer to your question is can POVERTY. Sex is the only "enjoyment" a poor man can get.
I had a similar experience as yours. You will soon become his worst enemy should he come the day you are not boxed and you tell him "you don't have."
I had another experience where someone I gave 5k for his child's naming ceremony (which I wasn't even invited), and the wife was of the impression that it's too small (because they thought they knew my income status based on one of my profiles they saw online) and started organizing a gang against me.
Becareful how you relate with some people, they can be extremely dangerous. Close thread... |
