Lol i knew OP would be in Calgary. Calgary is good for a soft landing but it has a way of making immigrants complacent. Just my 2 cents

Farming is the way to go. I wonder what it cost to buy those cages
TravelRe: 10 Reasons Nigerian Immigrants Would Enjoy Canada by AnthonyAk(m):
Ill identify the falsehoods as OP is learning work.

1) the Health care system: Truth be told the health care system is truly organised. The medical practitioners are well trained over here in Canada (I am not saying we have quacks in Nigeria.) They would give you your full service because you have paid for it in your tax.
Giving birth in Canada is free and some other treatments. All you need is to go to the hospital with your health card and you would be treated.

False, You don't get treated properly unless ur actually dying. Most walk in clinics will send you home without properly seeing you. If you dont have a family doctor that can actually take time and look at you many things get overlooked. I had Hep A , for months the doctor sent me home with immodum until my liver was soo swollen that i couldnt even sleep on my front or back. Most medical treatments also arent covered by basic medical insurance

3) Less traffic congestion and good roads: The traffic is so organised, it is not like Lagos that you can just flout the traffic rules and nothing grave would happen

False , Toronto and Vancouver has one of the worst traffic in north america as there are too many cars on the road. A house hold with 4 adults can easily have 4 cars.

4) Diversity: in Canada we have people from all over the world living here Namely; Indians, Chinese, Nigerians, Ghanaians. Just name any nation in the world and you would find at least someone from that nation.

False, between asian and brown folks , black people are a minority outside Toronto.

5) Equal opportunities for everyone: grin Yes! Canada is the land of opportunity for everybody. In Canada, no one cares your tribe, the colour of your skin or whatever barrier. It is easy to start up a business in Canada as far as it is legal.

False, there are certain ceilings an immigrant may never cross, low key there is favouritism. Asians keep to themselves mostly , brown people the same. As a black person you are expected to be head and shoulders above your colleagues to stand out which isn't a bad thing.

9) Transportation: smiley smiley The transportation here in Canada is very well organised. Here in Toronto, we have this type of bus (like the BRT). if you want to take the bus you are going to get a presto card You would tap the card to the machine for every two hours. You do not need to pay for the next bus if it is within those two hours span. we have a uber, lift and other means of transportation.

Not sure about Toronto but in Vancouver the transportation system is trash. my theory is there are forces that prevent proper train coverage so real estate continues to remain high in the lower mainland. Compared to a city like london where i was able to get trains at all hours of the day.

10) The food: They have poutine ( which is basically fries covered with gravy), they also have very good culture

False , i can name all the main types of food here.

Bar style food - Burgers , wings , fries
Italian food - Pizza , Pasta
Asian Food (Chinesee , Japanese , Pho)
Others

The list above is made better here than in naija tho.

Im so sick of eating sub par food that i cook for myself mostly. After a couple years one will be sick of it too.

Any questions? 2024 will make it 20 years in Canada..lol time flies.

The locals are suffering because of the amount of dirty money that is coming in and the amount of debt that each Canadian household carries.

Wages are stagnant and don't equate to the cost of living.

If you don't have parents here to set you up nicely you will grind and even then for many the only support they get is not paying rent and living at home till they are in their 30s.

You want to make good money? you want a nice house? your going to grind and get taxed while doing it. Pro and Cons

Hey Brother,

I believe you have a ton of experience from schooling and working in Canada. I know the conversations here seemed to have taken off on the wrong foot, but I imagine you have a wealth of experience you were looking to share when you started engagements on this thread.

As we move into a new calendar year, please let's allow bygones to be bygones. There are lots of folks who would benefit from your undergrad experience in Canada, professional insight into the IT industry, or even general life in BC. No pressure whatsoever - take your time. I would be looking forward to reading your insightful expose on Life as a Canadian Immigrant; your pitfalls, your wins, and what you would do differently.

Cheers! Happy 2021!!!

Unforunate that the train dosent take more than 2 trips per day. Also the first train should be leaving much earlier to commuters who have to work in lagos can get there and back

And my point still remains respect people irrespective of the job they do,a friend is visiting me today she has an MBA,was an SBO in the bank in Nigeria(for bankers u know she has grown high)we both do call centre here. The struggles people go through, its all part of the big story.
I have to do what you have to do....

Hello everyone in the house, trust we all are doing good.
Please I want to book a flight for February, Ethiopian airline from Abuja to Edmonton. Will my immigration check be in Toronto or in Edmonton? Because if it will be in Toronto, I may likely miss my flight to Edmonton.
Your passport will be checked at the first point of entry in Canada. So if your landing in Toronto , you will land in the international wing where you will go through immigration.

You have a million Canadian dollars and you are doing call centre jobs? And people believe this? Wow....My only advice to people using this thread to obtain information about Canada is to make google your friend. There are too many lies and half-truths about the reality of life in Canada on this thread. If someone makes an assertion about Canada, go and do your own research on google. It's all the lies and half-truths that ensure new immigrants to Canada face the bitter reality after landing, sooner or later.

And for those who don't believe him, go and read it yourselves, maybe you'll be convinced then: https://www.occrp.org/en/daily/11760-canada-real-estate-firms-violate-anti-money-laundering-rules
People don't understand the struggle that is waiting for them. If you don't come here properly equipped with either a proper experience and education or alot of laundered money then ur in for the ride of ur life.

Working menial jobs is just cycle once u begin, its hard to get out. The longer u work them the longer your career is on hold.

A friend of mine was a factory manager (Nigerian) for Postman Foods here in Vancouver. He hired a nigerian pastor with 6 kids and no income against his better judgement.

First day of work pastor cant make it because he has a church program and the GO of the church was coming.

Few weeks later pastor cant work saying his back hurts. Within the 2 months the pastor was hired he has already missed over 6 days of work for one reason or another. Pastor eventually got sacked by my friend. Mind you this pastor is age mates with my dad. I was really surprised the pastor was even given a PR in the first place.

I cant even imagine being sacked by some one that should be my sons age mate. But that is the reality of things

There are no hand outs here. In fact as an immigrant ur at a disadvantage from the moment you step here and you have to work up hill.

I may have been blunt in my responses but its only because i shine a harsh reality on life here, with out your friends and families and the environment you grew up.

It is his choice to do what ever job he wants. Last month alone 4 people that i came to Canada with in june this year got jobs with salary of 60k to 78k. After doing customer service to hold body.
Chinese folks are laundering money in Canada. Its an open secret and the Canadians are in bed with them.

Real estate is the #1 contributor to the Canadian gdp

@AnthonyAK:

I am very surprised and disturbed to read your claim that all you see black people do wherever you live in Canada are cleaner jobs and the like. While nothing wrong in doing those jobs but your view is limited to your circle. I will advise you to change your circle bro.

Majority of the Nigerians I know here is Canada (not to talk of other blacks) are professionals like Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, Pharmacist, Accountants, Nurses, business owners etc. and working in their professions. Also, majority of us work for big companies and we hold leadership roles like manager, senior managers, directors and vice presidents in those organizations. In fact, there are a lot of such Nigerians on this Nairaland and active on this particular thread.

I do get it that some of our people (limited number of them) are currently working survival jobs but nothing wrong with that because I know it is temporary. Many of us started like that (especially those of us in regulated professions like Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy etc.) before we got to where we are today.
I live in Vancouver , ur probably in Alberta or maybe Toronto. If ur in the latter its night and day when it comes to living in BC.

Also i too have many professional colleagues that are Nigerian but we are not enough not even close (in Vancouver)

Unlike you some of us have paid our way every step of the way. No parents to help us out, death took them early. Since you don't know everyone's story or why they're where they are, and you've had the privilege of riding on your parents' hard work and dedication, you should enjoy your privilege in humility and consideration for others who do not have it better as you have it.

Whilst no one can begrudge your privileges, it at least explains why you think you can stick your nose up and begin to dish out condescending and unsolicited advice any how. If you've had to pay your way solely, you would probably talk with more consideration and moderation, and maybe your views in life would be more measured and balanced. You need a reality check Sir, come down from this high horse you're riding, it leads thee no where.

People who work as cleaners or do menial jobs are not less human than you our supremo software developer. They have it differently for reasons which may or may not be within their control. Wishing you happy holidays. Stay safe out there.
I may have come across as condescending But it's only a warning. There are things worse than being in naija, hard to see them until ur on the outside

If you want to come here and be a cleaner be my guest Merry Christmas.

You do not seem to understand that your journey is not same as others so you don't have to use the quote, "Parents didn't spend all that money for me to touch a broom for work.".
Learn to be humble as the people won't remain same place forever.

Merry Christmas!
Totally understood,

My point is we can't come here and take it for granted. Life hits you hard and fast.

when I hear someone trying to come here and drive Uber I just laugh , that can be done in naija
