Gyungu Ortese road in Benue State has been blocked by enraged villagers, leaving travelers bound for Lafia and Abuja stranded with the community grappling with the aftermath of tragic killings by suspected herdsmen.

It was gathered from sources on the scene that the armed herdsmen invaded and attacked the village, Ortese in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State in the early hours of August 11.

A source said the attack, fueled by an unfathomable brutality, claimed the lives of numerous innocent souls, predominantly women and childre.

However, following the incident, villagers have in turn taken over the high way to protest blocking access to travelers coming in and out of Benue state.

In a shocking turn of events, a man, whose identity is yet to be revealed, reportedly stabbed a woman, believed to be his wife or girlfriend, to death before committing suicide.

The incident occurred on Idewu Street, in the Olodi Apapa area of Lagos state. Eyewitnesses at the scene have provided harrowing accounts of the distressing event.

According to one eyewitness, the assailant approached the defenseless woman and mercilessly stabbed her until her life was tragically cut short.

Following this heinous act, the man consumed a poisonous substance, identified as sniper, which swiftly claimed his own life, leaving a scene of utter devastation.

Another eyewitness, who claimed that the victim was the man’s girlfriend, recounted the chilling details of the incident.

The witness stated that the woman was engaged in selling garri on the street when the perpetrator abruptly appeared, wielding a knife with sinister intentions.

The witness went on to describe the horrific scene, stating, “What I saw today is more than scary. A man stabbed his girlfriend to death as she was hawking garri on the street, then drank sniper poison immediately. It was as if he was under a spell.”

Tragedy struck the Zaki Akpuuna Settlement area of Ukum Local Government area in Benue State today as unknown gunmen unleashed a wave of violence, resulting in the death of no fewer than 20 people. The horrifying incident took place in the early morning hours of July 8, 2023.

According to reports, the unidentified gunmen arrived in the village and began a shooting spree without any resistance or interruption. So far, authorities have discovered around 20 bodies, with the majority of the victims being young and able-bodied individuals.

Sources suggest that the gunmen may belong to a militia group operating in the Shitile area of the state. The exact motives behind the attack remain unclear at this time.

Expressing his dismay over the senseless killings, Hon. Engr. Ezra Nyiyongo, the Member Representing Ukum Constituency at the 10th Benue State House of Assembly, condemned the violence perpetrated against his constituents. In a statement released in response to the incident, he described the killings as extrajudicial and barbaric.

As a representative of the people, Hon. Nyiyongo vowed to fulfill his duty of safeguarding the lives and properties of his constituents. He pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that the culprits are apprehended and adequate security measures are implemented to prevent similar acts in the future.

The lawmaker also extended an invitation to any aggrieved individuals or communities to engage in dialogue with him, with the aim of preventing the recurrence of such heinous acts.
