You should have added that the OP would need to pass an affordability interview, so he'd need to have a job paying some reasonable income before trying for a mobile phone contract.

Going’s in person is indeed the best way to get credit, that's how I got one too. Just show up, speak to a representative,
Everything you’ve said is spot on. I kinda reference affordability when I said he shouldn’t try it if he is a student and to manage a china phone. If the OP (what does this mean sef) is a staff, 3 months payslip is enough.

Wait let me gist you guys about interviews fails for Nigerians. 3 Nigerians I interviewed recently had the most fantastic CVs, like men, I was proud.

Only for time for interview time:

Man 1 was shouting on us shocked grin at some point I even said, “please.. calm down… take a breath and relax”.. he still no gree grin
The other interviewer was asking why Man 1 was so angry. I had to explain that it was the person’s nature and it was normal in Nigeria. But they were worried he would shout on (senior) staff grin

Woman 2: she was ace. But her personality was dull. We even made jokes, she no laugh. And she kept sighing. Even me sef, I couldn’t beg for her. Some interviewers like to know you’re enjoying the interview. Make jokes as well, smile, keep a positive personality. Also if you’re going to laugh, don’t laugh inside the mic biko.

Man 3: guys. I know we are proud of our accent, but even foreigners in Nigeria learn to speak pidgin or twist their accent to speak to us. I was the only one that could hear this Man. I was the only one laughing at his jokes- the others on the panel were puzzled. So please lighten your accent small.

So you could be the best candidate but the above things will just ruin it. Seem happy, crack non-sensitive jokes, don’t gesticulate too much,M (you’re not a traffic warden), pause before you answer questions (don’t rush to answer), you could even answer a question and say “has that happened to you too?” And the interviewer may laugh and tell their own story.. and that’s how interview will turn to gist. Let them enjoy your presence.

You’ll def pass.

Hello do you by any chance know what the computer always picks up onhuh I have heard about this algorithm thing alot
A job ad would have some words in it. Make sure you have those words in your cv. What I mean is, if you’re applying for a Scrum master role, and your cv doesn’t have “scrum” in it, it will fall through.

What I advise my mentees to do is:

Pick 3 job ads that you like. Read & digest them very well. Paraphrase each sentence into your cv (if it’s a something you’ve done or can do o).

The reason I put that last sentence is because I have a few people that “lied” in their cv and are crying now in the job.

So be kiaful- no go do pass yasef.

If you don’t know the job line, invest time into learning it, that’s how you upskill yourself for a role. E.g. if the job line says sql, go to w3schools and learn basic sql. It will help you defend it well if asked in an interview.

Also make sure you don’t have things like age, gender, full address (just London or Leeds and postcode is fine) or state of origin (lol whenever I see these in cvs i know it’s a Nigerian grin). Please don’t put picture.

If you have money, find a cv writer online and pay them to arrange your cv for you. It’s worth the investment because they make it look very fine and add some more words you may not remember.

It was short. Less than 180 days in 5 yrs. I honestly didn’t think one would be asked for proof that periods of absence was authorised by employer. However, my friend’s application was delayed because they requested she sends a letter from employer covering a period of absence of about 2 weeks
I really feel your pain. They just wake up and change an immigration law to make it more stringent.

Sorry iye.

I need advice please
My iPhone is bad and was told there's no support for the iphone6 anymore.
I tried to get a phone contract but was declined. I guess due to lack of credit history.
How can I get a mobile phone contract without this credit history wahala?
You might need to walk into a store face to face. Maybe Curry’s PC, or any other big phone store. Alternatively you could go with a mobile provider, like O2 or EE- walk into the store. Explain to them that you want a mobile contract and a phone, they will explain everything to you and tell you if you’ll likely get it or not. This way you won’t apply and get rejected (I think this affects your credit score).

If you’re not a student, you may get a yes if you’ve been here for a minimum of 3 months. If you’re a student, pls just close your eye and buy china.

Good idea. But they want sponsorship. I dont think civil service sponsors. For those with papers navigating civil service or tech jobs should be a breeze with solid experience.
they sponsor for the right candidate. Just score high enough for them to want you. Also it’s DS, they aren’t many that want to work for the CS so they sponsor DS and DEngr like mad.

Interviews are not wins. You ll get to realize this in due time. Let me just say. In my opinion.
Guy, career wise I’m top , but I’m still happy to go for interviews so I can learn one more question to train my Mentees or one more things to teach my work staff.

Let’s not spite humble beginnings please. Celebrate any and every win. Simple.

Yes just to add. As regards the IT thing. Be prepared to do lots of interviews to nail an offer. Nothing is guaranteed. Please don’t celebrate having an interview. Don’t even celebrate your second stage. Or your technical or even the coding challenges or take home assesments. The worst is those test gorilla where camera will be on. Or those ones where 2 guys are watching as you code. Trying to poke holes in every thing your code.
I don’t agree. CELEBRATE everything. You left a country with no opportunity to a foreign place, why shouldn’t you celebrate your first call, or interview or second interview?

We get more with thanksgiving. Also, my friend that grew up here and is a head of his department celebrates being called for interview, just because he is happy to be interviewed, even if for just the experience.

Let’s learn to not be entitled. Tech is great, tech is easier to get into. Also, you’re human, celebrate your little wins.

Saturated market. Rigorous interview process. Its survival of the fittest. Companies want to only hire data scientist with experience these days as they don’t have patience. Unless you want to use graduate route which is still competitive.
The civil service is happily hiring DS et al. They should check there.

I’m going for Advance engineering and strategic management considering my first degree in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering. Even tho all my work experience has been IT. Data analysis, Product design and python development.

What’s prospect of getting IT sponsored job with my experience and proficiency after graduation without going for IT related MSc as I would like to stick to Engineering studies for some reasons.

Please I need help to make urgent decision.
You’ll get an IT job if you meet the IT criteria. They don’t care about degrees here. Just make sure you have the required experience for a DA/DS or DEngr role. Welldone

@Aphrodite007 Sorry to hear about your divorce..I trust you will be fine. Glad someone is finally going this global talent route on here, Do you know you can apply for a review and issued the endorsement without any added documentation? All you need is to highlight why you think you should issued the technation endorsement. I think you should try this before you go the route of reapplying. Two indians I know did this and were issued their endorsement and after rejection. The funny thing is that they said they got the info from a nigerian guy on youtube.( paray, I believe is his name)
Yeah I’m quite glad I’m doing it so someone can teach others. I asked a few people to set up a thread to help other Nigerians but they shy-ed away (lol they didn’t even help me but no qualms— that’s why I celebrated the veterans because not many people are willing to help others).

Thanks so much for your help. I’ll look him up and see what I can do. I highlighted why to them but I think I messed up by going for Talent rather than Promise. Most people got Promise cos it’s easier- Talent is harder. Anyway, no shaking.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I actually went through your profile last week to see if you had logged in recently.
On the global talent visa, did you appeal? Someone told me if you appeal, you have a high chance of success. You don't need to submit additional documents but emphasise what you submitted. I wish you the best.
Thanks my love. I appealed it because they missed some of my evidence. They complained about the people that gave me recommendations, but I told them they were high people, etc. hopefully it will be favourable but I’m already planning a re-application.

If your friend went for TechNation, it will be good to hook up with them to help others. Because it’s a good route for tech people.

Thanks dear. Well there are other channels e.g getting sponsored by my employer by I want them as a last resort because I don’t know how to commit to one employer for more than 1 year. Also my last manger wanted to use my employment visa to bully me. If I can do things on my own, I prefer to.

Went on a hiatus guys- sorry for my absence- was dealing with a divorce (we just grew apart chasing money hehe)

I’m trying to get a global talent visa (tech nation route). The hope is to get it and then create a thread that would teach others how to do it but I got rejected on my first application. The plan now is to try again (while addressing the mistake I made in my last application) or pay a lawyer (waste of money as I still have to explain everything to them anyway lol) angry

Doing the talent visa alone made me realise how invaluable just wise (however annoying he is), Lexus and lagosIMH are for their invaluable contributions to Nairaland (sorry you can’t use this for an endorsement but I appreciate you guys loads for all you’ve done and are still doing on Nairaland.. ok let me add ralphjean before he slaps me lol)

I’m back now sha. wink

Thank you, I have also done lots and lots of research and also check sponsorship jobs, though business/marketing top the lists
I just want to seek individual opinions of people who has worked in the 2 disciplines
Thanks once again for your input
Lol no one would sponsor business or marketing. Because there is shortage doesn’t mean there is sponsorship— there’s a difference.

Tech companies mostly have foreigners so they are more willing to sponsor their tech staff than other normal staff.
