Hello ogas in the house,

Please, I urgently need to get to Lagos. Is there a way to secure an emergency travel document from our Naija embassy at this time as my passport has not been sorted yet by the embassy??

Thanks in advance!
I don’t know if the embassy is open o, but ETC is on Fridays. Someone said they travelled without one, if you’re brave you can give it a try.

Me I got mine quietly, because I don’t like to speak too much English at Nigerian airports.

I was told the embassy doesn't stop issuing Emergency travel certificate in lockdown. However not sure if it issued on certain days in the week or if its daily.
I thought the embassy was shut?

Good day everyone.
Please can 43 years old single female with HND surveying and PGD financial management to move to uk to study and change career to social care or paediatric nursing?

What schools would you recommend or what is the best route for her ?
Age is just a number in the UK, and your marital status doesn’t matter. As far as you don’t mind studying with young people, just apply for the course you want.

Good luck.

Even with IT agile is a mess really ....(easier said than done kind of mess) .... initally it was the buzz word floating around even my current project. During design them dey throw the word agile up and down.

But idea and reality can be night and day. Las las it back to waterfall methodology. But e good to read about it for interview purposes
Agile actually works when people start focusing on building the mindset rather than ticking boxes. The last 3 companies that I worked at, they did agile successfully. Being agile doesn’t mean you must do scrum, kanban very easy to learn and apply. I actually advise businesses to start with kanban so they adapt to the ideology of agility, before practicing XP, Safe, Less or Scrum.

From my understanding of Agile PM, its related to software development while Project Management qualifications for construction such as PMP, APM etc purely relates to managerial knowledge of delivering construction projects to Time, Cost and Quality.

APM is UK originated, however having the PMP (PMI) also helps show the employer that you have got international experience. At least, I would like to think it contributed to my first employment
I can’t say for sure if your international cert added to your employability here in the UK, but one thing I’m sure of it certainly didn’t add to mine. UK employers are quite snobby. I have the highest level of international qualifications in my field but all my employer talks about is my lowest one (because it is from the BCS). Like they see that one as “wow!” grin

Traditional methods of Project Management is wasteful and expensive.
When I was teaching my agile class I actually told them that Engineering can’t be agile. Imagine building a bridge and first working on an MVP for people to drive on it and give feedback grin

One thing is certain, you won’t get that feedback cos they will all be dead grin

I have seen several roles ask for PMP. Some will say Prince 2 or any other project management certification. In my engineering experience in the UK, I have seen more of PMP requirement than prince 2. A lot of the engineering firms are [b]international [\b] and you are likely to interact with global clients and work on international projects.
Exactly. Like I pointed out, UK companies love their local certifications more, while international companies would want international certifications.

I’ve been on a PM training call and the tutor said “in the UK, we prefer to do our projects in controlled environments..”
TravelRe: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Aphrodite007(f):
dustydee:
In my opinion, prince2 is not too relevant. I'd rather go for PMP or APM ChPP.
In the international space, yes. But in the UK, no. UK businesses mostly recognise certifications that are for the UK. I have international certifications that American employers fall over, but the UK recruiters only give attention to my UK certs.

Thanks boss, I really appreciate. I did HSE and project management certification in Nigeria but not sure it will be recognised. My initial plan is to do PMI project management certification, but I will add HSE now too.
Prince2 not PMI. Prince2 is mostly preferred in the UK.

Good decision.

2yrs ago a friend stopped going to one Nigerian church i think in London too because of heavy financial demand.

According to him..he pays 10% of his salary as tithe, £30 monthly for kingdom investment. £10 weekly to support God's work or what he calls mission support. Every Dec they have thanksgiving service where members are tasked to pay certain amount. 2yes ago they were asked to pay £1000 each for certain project, a year after that its £500 at least.

Then every Jan you have to give up your salary as first fruit and you still have to sold-seed and appreciate pastor from time to time.
They can just gather this money and pay for poor peoples Jamb and Waec or so scholarship for poor students that can’t afford university tuition in Nigeria. That’s the love that God taught us, not this rubbish of enriching one man.

Disgusting!

Good morning my seniors

So I got my tier 4 student visa and I'm officially about to start my 10years journey to settlement ( I hope I will be able to cut it down to 8years sha)

Please I'm preparing for the whole travels , I will like to ask the elders in the house what are the necessary stuffs for to bring to UK. Be it food items or anything that will be cheaper for me to get from here and other tips for someone coming alone to UK ( I don't have any family member or Friend there)

I will also like to know about the prospect of MSc Civil and Structural Engineering in UK ( that's what I will be studying),

I look forward to hearing from you guys. Thank you in advance
You can cut it down to 6 years not 8; if you get a job immediately after you graduate. Make sure you start applying (for graduate or entry level jobs) as soon as you land. Put your MSC “in view” on your CV. If you’ve got experience, even better.
Lots of engineers I know do project management, but I’ll advice throwing in HSE/Nebosh certifications (I don’t know if they are the same lol); I know an Engr that’s doing well and he has a HSE.

Food:
pack some noodles
crayfish
no red oil (not worth the stress)
dry fish (your house mates will hate the smell)
egusi (please grinded!)
Maggie (important!!)
dry pepper (importanter!!)
no need for more than 2 pasta (it’s cheap here, but you might not want to shop when you get here)
kilishi (if you like it)
garri (I don’t eat this stuff)
small sugar
1 pack of powdered milk (Milo too if you like)
fry some meat (don’t try this if your destination is Heathrow)
Some dried veggies for your egusi soup
Amala powder/poundo (small please)
Beans (not much, the one here gets done quickly)

Put all these in your luggage o!

When is it advisable to take the life in the uk test if FLR runs out in February 2022..?
I thought it use to be anytime during the duration of your FLR or has it changed?

Let me not go and give person wrong advice oh.. please help me clarify smiley
I was just smiling like a mumu grin they can take it anytime they want. I still don’t know who the patron saint for England is, that’s why I’ve not taken it grin

I however don’t think they can apply to naturalise until after 6 months of getting ILR.

But let the veterans answer, I’m guessing.

“Miss Aphrodite” isn’t saying data analytics would phase out. She is saying “Do not limit yourself to one thing and getting stuck in one box”. A lot of people who were FORTRAN/COBOL programmers many years ago would practically be useless in today’s world.

Data, AI, etc are the “hot” things now. What are the chances it’d still be hot in a few years from now? Something else could be the next big thing, space travel?

In summary, don’t limit yourself!
Oga lekan Eshe o. He said valid things but misunderstood me.

Last last, this place is for us to air our differing opinion, so that people can pick and choose what they will listen to.

Miss Aphrodite, let me tell you data analytics has come to stay. I think it more or less complements IT. Most people with good and in demand IT skill knows feck all about analytics. I cant believe you're saying data is going theway of dinosaur, that's like saying people wont use their personal details anymore. Even if that happens, the identifiers are alsoanother form of data open to analyses.

Like I said earlier, we cant stop generating data; it is coming to us like stream in this modern age of big data, AI and Machine learning. Tell me any aspect of life that data is not generated. Even Home office is using it to determine skills gap and professional they want from different countries.

Do you know supermarkets like tesco et al leverage data analytics in their stores? They use it to determine footfall in each of their stores across the country this is what helps them make decision on whether to set up a new store in proximity. Apart from that, everything you buy in stores have been carefully placed based on some insightful analytics. If you want to buy a condom, they will place some lubes beside it. If you want to buy birthday card for a kid, they will place princess Elsa frozen cake not too far from it and so on. There was a report I report i read whilst working working for one of these supermarkets. They said they did some analyses to determine every item pairs most people buy in each store and they have been specifically place closer to each other in order to increase sales.

Data scientists/analysts add value to organisations in general, it is a good box to be in.

If not for data, cybersecurity will not be hotcake now. That shiit is not going anywhere!
Ok

I don't think there are well known certifications for this area of specialisation except to be very proficient and be able to demonstrate it. Covid has impacted most field of study but in my humble opinion, this going to grow bigger and bigger. Data is the new gold!

They don't need to change nada. Even in computing, you generate structured and unstructured data every second, people need to analyse it. There are data lakes, databases and data warehouses everywhere now where insights and reports need to be generated. So, this is not going anywhere. It has been established that we have more connected devices accessing various social media platforms, APIs & microservices generating humoguous volume of data in petabyte scale upon which some form of intelligence is required. In fact, all the fintechs, startups, banks, telecoms every area rely on data to function. See, some data analysts are even providing Boris with information everyday on Covid19...that is why they put lexusgs430's area in tier 60 grin grin I will advise anyone with flair for analytics to jump on it.
I assure you, I know it’s going nowhere. I’m just saying don’t put yourself in a box.

People that made compact discs also thought it was going nowhere. Network engineers thought Networking was the new diamond, physical server providers thought same, the same way Project managers thought they were the new hotcakes. Now the new thing with data is reading states rather than value. Things change. Be agile.

Btw a small company is likely to employ a computing graduate than a data graduate, just so they feel safe that the person can do more than data.

As for certs, proving that you have python, r, and basic sql knowledge is enough.

I am in IT but not in this particular field hence why I rather not answer since I am no expert

Another disclaimer this was pre covid ....I dont know what post covid looks like. My industry has completely dried up..... chei, but God dey.
Very good advice. It’s literally what I tell my mentees. I tell them to Look at a job spec of their dream job and build themselves to the point that they can tick all of them off.

I’m also happy that you pointed out that UK doesn’t care about degrees.

If I could advise this person, it will be that they should change that course to computing because data is too narrow. Computing gives the opportunity to be anything, provided they certify! The world changes every day, the last thing anyone wants is to be stuck in Data when a new thing comes and replaces Data.

Hebraeem, please post this in the student section, if you’re from there. So students stop limiting themselves.
