I've had similar experiences with Naija police, I don't even bother begging them. Their natural expectation is that you will be begging them, may be not just talking will throw them off a bit.
Me and a friend came out of a bank in Lagos a few years ago and were double-crossed out of no where by the police. They requested us to step out of the car and they started searching us. I had went to deposit at a bank, not to withdraw, so I had no cash on me. After their search, they really found nothing.
They requested my ID, I gave it to them. I had not lived in Nigeria for a long time and my only ID was a foreign drivers licence in my wallet. One the officers would then say "You are in big trouble. You will have to bail yourself out in US dollars".
I was lost, trying to understand what my crime was.
They let my friend that was driving go, and I was bundled in their car with them. No explanation of my offence was given.

I called my brother who came to meet with them somewhere, paid them what they wanted and I was released.
Similar occurrences have occurred to me and other folks I know afterwards, so this isn't new.

May be the entire Nigerian police needs to be scrapped and replaced by state police for respective states, or local governments. It works like that in the US; each city has its own police. Currupt and efficient police units can be easily identified that way.

Which serious country runs police service (not Force even) like we do? We are just not ready to move forward yet. A corrupt, inept and poorly equipped police in a place run from Abuja with such massive security issues is a sign of our failure as a nation.

The ignorance that peddles itself as religiosity on these boards can be really disheartening. Little wonder our streets are full of ungodliness despite the increase in so called houses of God.

I think 9ja has a higher suicide rate but some may be covered up to avoid shame. You know the hypocrisy in our society. Suicide is still an abomination in many villages and small towns.

The high rate of mental health issues among retired servicemen is well-known worldwide but in 9ja, we use religion to perpetuate ignorance, prejudice and backwardness. We lack empathy in reality and we can hardly put ourselves in other people's position. Until someone is stark naked on the street, we don't think of mental health. Whereas a large number of people have depression, substance abuse, sociopathy, psychopathy, PTSD (victims of violence like robbery, rape, etc), and various disorders. If you would evaluate many prison inmates in 9ja, no doubt many will have undiagnosed mental health issues. This ignorance affects our leaders too. Long way to go.

As for religion, we remember how religious but ungodly Judea was when Jesus came. No surprise there.
