PoliticsTambuwal Remains Chairman PDP Governors Forum – PDP by ArewaNorth(op): 9:09pm On Sep 08, 2022
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied speculations that Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has resigned his position as the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.

Speculations have been rife since the resignation of the Chairman Board of Trustee (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin.

But reacting to enquiries from journalists, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba said it was not true that Tambuwal has resigned.

Meanwhile, in a communique after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the party said
“NEC approved a unified campaign structure across the country for the PDP for the 2023 general elections which will focus more on the grass root.

“NEC approved the proposed structure and organogram of the National Campaign Council as well as the National Campaign Management Council for the 2023 general elections. NEC also approved the Structures for Campaign Councils at the states, local government, ward and unit levels.”

However, the names of those manning the positions will be made known in due time, the party spokesman said.

PoliticsMilitary Nabs Boko Haram Informant In Asokoro, Combs Abuja Highbrow Areas by ArewaNorth(op): 2:35pm On Sep 08, 2022
Tactical surveillance troops of the Nigerian military have arrested a Boko Haram informant, Mamuda Usman popularly known as Bado in Asokoro, a highbrow area in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The informant, according to the Military High Command, run errands for a suspected high-profiled Boko Haram Commander in Kaduna, who is on the wanted list of security agencies.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Musa Danmadami, who disclosed this to journalists at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, also said that the military would not relent in rooting out all collaborators of terrorists in the country.

The disclosure is coming less than 48 hours after the Department of State Service arrested a Kaduna-based based Desert Herald publisher, Tukur Mamu, over alleged N2bn ransom racketeering.

Speaking at the briefing, Danmadami said, ”The tactical surveillance troops arrested a Boko Haram informant named Mamuda Usman (aka Bado) in Asokoro, the Federal Capital Territory.

”It was revealed that the suspect ran errands for a suspected high profiled Boko Haram Terrorist Commander in Kaduna, who is on the tracking list of security agencies.”

He noted that the arrested suspect is in custody for further interrogation, adding that on the same day, troops on clearance operations responded to a distress call on about kidnapping incidents at Changal village in Mangu Local Government Area and Pinau village in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He added, ”Consequently, troops trailed and rescued the kidnapped victims from their abductors while the kidnappers fled on sighting the troops.

”Similarly, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE on patrol, responded swiftly to two separate kidnapping incidents at ChaChangi village in Takun Local Government Area and Rafin Kada village in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

”Consequently, troops embarked on rescue operations and exchanged fire with the bandit and arrested Mr Alex Apera aged 26 years and Mr Umaru Halilu aged 34 years. All arrest and rescued victims were handed over to the relevant authority for further action.”

Also fielding questions from journalists on the arrest of Tukur Mamu, the immediate past Direct of DMO, Maj.-Gen. Benard Onyeuko urged the general public to allow the DSS to carry out its investigation before making comments on the issue.

The military also denied its involvement in the crude oil theft going on in the country, saying those who are involved will be named and shamed any time they are caught in the illegal acts.

Should Nigeria risk such sectarian crisis and ethnic tension and mistrust again because of just a single individual's personal ambition?

Were you not around when Buhari spent over 100 days in hospital in the UK? Did you forget what Nigeria went through?

Nigeria was literally on fire with sectarian killings in many parts of Nigeria. Buhari had to be brought back to Nigeria briefly before going back to complete his treatment. Did you forget how many people died during that ethnic tension?

Was it worth it? Even Buhari himself said he had never been that sick in his life. Was the crisis that the sickness created worth it? Of what benefits were the loss of lives and property? What unity did it foster? Had it not further deepened the ethnic divisions in the country?

Tinubu has spent months in the different hospitals in Europe and America recently. He doesn't even say he is not sick. He knows he is unwell. The APC northern governors know he is infirm. If anything happens to him, would it be out of place to reach a reasonable conclusion that the APC northern governors were working to a certain end?

Must anyone tell any human being that this country is too fragile to take that kind of risk again? For the ambition of just one individual?
After all the unrelated commented, u finally said nothing but a statement born out of dogmatism and hear-say. Healthy person can fall ill today and die while leaving the sick to live for many more years. Over 200 members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) including five of their commanders have been killed in joint air and ground operations of the Nigerian armed forces, Daily Trust reports.

A top military source, people with insider knowledge of happenings in the North East and locals told this paper yesterday that the terrorists were neutralised in some of their hideouts near Bama in the central part of Borno State.

They said that ground troops and the Nigeria Air Force had conducted operations between Thursday and Friday, September 1 and 2 on many locations infested by ISWAP terrorists.

According to them, the operations had yielded results as over 200 fighters have been killed and over 70 who fled were drowned while trying to cross a river.

‘How commanders, others were killed’

Our sources said the terrorists were struck severally for over 48 hours, hence the successes recorded by the military.

“It was an operation conducted by the Air Force component of the military and troops of 199 special forces and 222 battalions,” a military operative said.

“They targeted the terrorists’ hideouts in Gabchari, Sheruri, Mantari and Mallum Masari,” he said. Another military source said, “In a well-planned and coordinated attack by aircraft and ground troops, terrorists’ locations at Gabchari near Bama were truck severally and mopped up after the terrorists were observed fleeing upon sighting ground troops.

“Subsequently, aircraft under the Air Component were immediately scrambled to provide close air support (CAS) and engage the terrorists in successive passes. The strikes were deemed successful as lifeless bodies of terrorists were observed around the points of impact.

“This has also been collaborated by local sources who have expressed delight with the increased rate on attacks on terrorists and their enclaves, a situation that has allowed some of them to return to their homes and tend to their farms.

“Intel from various sources also indicated that over 200 terrorists were neutralized by the joint efforts of both air and ground troops including five ISWAP commanders. After the air strikes, the aircraft maintained close air support on the withdrawing troops until they returned back to base,” he said.

Even though he did not give the actual number of terrorists killed, NAF Spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said that the successful strikes and ground attacks around Bama were classical examples of the centrality of jointness as a critical factor in operational success.

“But we aren’t carried away with this success as we shall continue to take the fight to the enemy until they lay down their arms,” he said.

It was learnt that the villages attacked by the military are located on the fringes of Sambisa forest.

5 commanders eliminated

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad said that an early damage assessment revealed that the successful operation led to the elimination of high-ranking commanders including Abou Hauwa (Munzir), Amir Shettima, Akura Buri(Nakif), Abou Zainab, Abou Idris and their Fighters.

He said that the ground troops had during the raid, stormed a hideout of the terrorists in Gafchari, where they engaged the troops in a gun battle leading to the killing of over 30 fighters while others escaped with bullet wounds.

“Similar strikes were also undertaken at Sheruri when the combat aircraft attacked another location of fighters deployed to stage an ambush against own ground troops,” the source said.

“In Gaizuwa, the troops destroyed two vehicles and the home of Abou Iklilima which used to be hideouts to insurgent leaders. Other makeshift tents and properties belonging to terrorists were also destroyed.

“Additional 9 bodies who died as a result of bullet wounds were recovered around the bushes in Gaizuwa, among them were two Boko Haram Commanders including; Abou Zainab, Abou Idris.”

A community leader in Bama said they saw fighter jets conducting air interdiction missions against the insurgents which resulted in neutralising dozens of fighters.

“It was evidently a successful mission and we hope our military operatives would continue to succeed,” he said.

Daily Trust had reported on Sunday that over 70 suspected terrorists drowned in a river following air bombardment by the military.

It was gathered that military operatives in collaboration with Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) had earlier killed over 20 members of Boko Haram insurgents in Sheruri village of Bama LGA on Thursday.

Sources said that after the Sheruri attack, the escapees drowned in a river around Dipchari village of Bama LGA on Friday.

“This morning (Saturday) around 8:30 am, they conducted a funeral for more than 50 of their fighters at Dipchari village and they continue with the search for the remaining terrorists,” one of them said.

ISWAP, B/Haram using North East as training ground

An intelligent source told the Daily Trust yesterday that members of ISWAP and Boko Haram were using many cells in the northern, southern and central parts of Borno as training grounds.

“The truth is that they have been adequately subdued in their former stronghold along the Lake Chad region and therefore unable to carry out massive attacks.

“If you analyse happenings in the last couple of months, they had shifted their operations to the northwestern states of Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara. Of course, this was before the recent increase in the military operations in the region.

“That notwithstanding, ISWAP and Boko Haram still find it easier to train their recruits around Borno and this is for the obvious reasons of manoeuvrability and access to weapons from neighbouring countries.

“There is a need for the military to sustain the tempo of uprooting the training camps while sister agencies like Customs and Immigrations should increase surveillance around our borders to reduce arms proliferation so that we can bring an end to their campaign against the Nigerian state. We have been fighting this war for long and this is the time to recover,” he said.

Insurgents attack Borno mosque, kill imam, three others

[Terrorists have attacked a mosque in Borno, killing the Chief Imam of Gima and three other worshipers.

The attack, which occurred on Friday, also left many people injured as the terrorists invaded the Ngulde community of Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

Daily Trust gathered that the terrorists, numbering about 20, launched the attack early in the morning on Friday by opening fire on worshippers who had finished their Fajir prayers at the Mosque. The terrorists also looted livestock and foodstuff and set ablaze two vehicles in the Ngulde community, which is located at some part of Sambisa forest in the state.

The story of the attack was disclosed on Sunday by the Councillor representing Ngulde Ward, Hon Bilyaminu Umar.

“Ngulde ward is one of the strongest communities in Askira-Uba local government …I felt deeply shocked in sharing the grief of this latest attack when most of my people were busy tapping from this year’s farming season.

“The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 2, 2022, after the fajir prayers, claimed four lives and left many with casualties, while properties and businesses worth millions of naira were also destroyed and carted away by the insurgents,” he said.

PoliticsOgun Speaker, Oluomo Released From EFCC Custody, CAN Organises Praise Session by ArewaNorth(op): 10:43pm On Sep 03, 2022
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted bail to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo.

Oluomo was arrested by the anti-graft agency over alleged financial impropriety.

The Speaker was apprehended by operatives of the commission at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.

His arrest was after he allegedly refused to honour several invites sent to him by the agency.

It was learnt that Oluomo was airlifted to Abuja after his arrest in Lagos on Thursday.

But, the Speaker had returned to his Ifo residence as of Saturday morning.

The Speaker’s media aide, Abdulgafar Adeleye, confirmed to newsmen that the Speaker returned home on Saturday morning.

It was gathered that some leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ifo organized a praise and worship session to celebrate Oluomo’s release.

“I am there as we speak. An unplanned praise and worship was held earlier today by his supporters and the leadership of CAN in Ifo local government,” Mr Adeleye said.

Our correspondent reports that the residence of the Speaker turned into a Mecca of sorts as well-wishers thronged the place to show solidarity with him.
