PoliticsRe: Partisan Comparisons Of Channel Tv’s Seun And Arise Tv’s Rufai By Farooq Kperogi by ArewaNorth: 12:04pm On Apr 15, 2023
sonature1:
Just like Oseni Rufai, Seun Okin desperately wants a working country. Unfortunately, he knows there's a limit to which he can push it because he benefits from the largesse of (or has a soft spot for) the ruling party.

On the other hand, Oseni Rufai is young and extremely knowledgeable. Just like most young Nigerians, he sees the clear path to a new Nigeria through Peter Obi, who to a very large extent weighs much better than most Nigérian politicians on the integrity scale.

In summary, every human is a political animal. No human is totally partisan because politics is something that affects everyone, including those who don't seem to care about it.
It is obvious that most young Nigerians are full of hates, biases and know nothing about governance, capacity and intellect. How can Rufai be knowledgeable enough to attract this kind of hype?
The guy is dumb, sic and not worthy of the profession. Ethics and neutrality is the best way to go in the principle of TV broadcast media because it is a business and many unforeseen consequences have to be avoided.
The best journalists in Nigeria are newspaper journalists who investigate facts and report secrets and dangerous events which If exposed may be useful information to all, but for someone to sit in a broadcast station spitting shits reliably sourced from SM debates and discourse especially Twitter doesn't make Useni worthy of that hype. It is sad how Nigerians in their open biases glorify people who don't at all have capacity. The best journalists I know in Nigeria aren't in TV stations, they're out there working hard in disguise bringing the news that the TV stations rely upon for their broadcast!
Glorifying yellow journalism should be stopped!
Lessons should be drawn from political events of Nigeria from 1999-2023 where by people who go hard on government expressing bitter opinions about the failure of govt are seen as heroes and capacitative individuals. Criticism is cheap but action is a different phenomenon.
Go and see the history of eloquence, criticism, excellent pen solutions to National problems expressed by the likes of Adesina, Festos Keyamo, Adamu Adamu, Obasanjo, SLS, Sunday Dare, Makinde, among hundred of other critics who were just opportunist and couldn't do anything when given the chance to in some Govt capacity to prove their worth. Almost all Nigerian critics criticise govt for selfish reasons or just catching cruise. There is no any capacity in journalism beside working for brown envelope, treachery, opposition or in some cases demanding for corrections and Rufai doesn't fall in any category of people who wants better Nation by supporting a candidates whose capacity isn't even worth a commissioner of a State!

HealthFG To Build 15 Psychiatric Outposts In South East by ArewaNorth(op): 10:45pm On Apr 09, 2023
The Federal Government is poised to enhance mental health in the South East with the establishment of 15 outposts in the five states of the zone.

Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Monday Igwe, disclosed this at a press briefing shortly after he resumed office following his re-appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term of four years.

He explained the outposts would be located in each of the senatorial districts, noting that the essence was to make access to mental health services easier for the people of the zone.

He disclosed nine out of the 15 proposed outposts had been completed and equipped and would be operational soonest with ambulances readily available to convey patients to Enugu in major cases.

Igwe said: “This hospital is the only psychiatric facility in the entire South East region. It is also the only facility that is made to train doctors and nurses in psychiatry. It is also the only facility that offers research in terms of mental health in the South East. It is also our mandate to give clinical services to people that have mental illnesses.

“The hospital also is available for the people of South South and some parts of North Central region of the country. So, if we don’t do well, we will be leaving Nigerians to suffer. That’s why we want to make this place to be the best and centre of excellence in mental health practice.

“There are a number of ways to actualise this. Since many people live very far away from Enugu State, we want to make sure our 15 newly built outposts in South East are operational.

“We have ensured each of the 15 senatorial districts in the South East has one outpost. We have successfully completed and equipped nine of the outposts while the rest are still ongoing.

“Those ones we have completed are going to be activated. We are going to post our staff there.”

The medical director received a rousing welcome from staff of the hospital, where he thanked the president for finding him worthy of another tenure in office.

Igwe took over a fractured health institution four years ago and has made efforts to restore the lost glory of the hospital.

Ibrahim Dabo, the dean, Faculty of Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, says the university is working to develop a made-in-Nigeria car that will use water.

The dean made this known on Saturday in Zaria while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on the commemoration of the 2023 World Engineering Day for sustainable development.

Mr Dabo, a professor, said there were several breakthroughs in ABU, including the recent development of an electric car and a shell eco-marathon car.

He added that the faculty was working on the development of a car that would be running with water.

“The shell eco-marathon car that was developed by the university had a capacity to cover over 100 kilometers with a litre of fuel,” he said.

According to him, the shell eco-marathon car has been taken to South Africa where it performed excellently, stressing that the university is working to improve on its fuel efficiency.

“The concept for the shell eco-marathon car was a small car that takes a maximum of two people for a racing competition, not for mass transit,” he said.

He added that the electric car that was developed is also a small car that takes a maximum of four people.

The dean however noted that the closure of Nigerian universities for 2023 general elections made the commemoration of the event low key at ABU.

He described the theme of the event, “Engineering innovations for more resilient world”, as topical, apt and timely.

Mr Dabo, therefore, called on the government to encourage outcome based education across tertiary institutions to boost and strengthen the quality and skills of engineers produced in Nigeria.

The professor also appealed for improved collaboration between the academia and industries.

He lamented that most of the industries around most of the institutions were closed, few functional ones import skills and essential raw materials, resulting into parallel position between the academia and industries.

NAN recalls that the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development was proclaimed by UNESCO at its 40th General Conference in 2019.

The day is celebrated worldwide on March 4 of each year since 2020 as a UNESCO international day of celebration of engineers and engineering.

This is the dishonesty that's typical of you APC supporters. You were quick to call out the failure of the previous govt in the pwr sector but rush to defend the present govt when their failure is also highlighted.
Apart from the lies in your flimsy excuses, since you know the enormity of the task involved in pwr, why then do you blame some people for not improving on the distribution within a space of less than ten years? If govt is struggling to make impact in only one out of three stages of pwr, why do you blame private companies whose major means of finance is loans when the interest rates have been rising over the past eight years while the forex has crumbled?
It seems you lots are only interested in blame game and buck passing and not the development of the country.
What's in it for you is what I don't understand.
I'm not brought up in such an atmosphere where people just rush to say things against the understanding of fact.

I agree with your last statement. But i also disagree with putting the blame there exclusively.
Another govt has spent eight years and did nothing in that regard need to be called out too.
Are u aware of the currently SIEMENS ongoing projects in power sector, TCN precisely?
The project is extremely huge, we have never witnessed it in more than 3 decades. The problem is power reform isn't like constructing roads. Imagine the time consumption of deploying more than 30 transformers with weight of about 170 tons, the specifications of the transformers, the time for industry tests, the shipping, it takes about 2 month to transport a transformer from Lagos port to Kano for instance due to the nature of the load and movement of the vehicle, unloading and uploading the gigantic transformer takes significant time, the decommissioning of the old ones or the civil work to commission the new ones, the huge task in the installation process, the laying of communication cables and connection to the control room, the commissioning test and onboarding the transformer to the load for DisCoa consumption and that will be a time when the DisCos may not even have infrastructure in place to evacuate the transmitted energy which may just amount to an upgrade in futility at the moment of that work.
Imagine erecting a tower on which transmission conductors will transmit energy and building not only one but many of them for the upgrade projects?
Under this this administration we have realized 22 power stations and upgrade, pls just imagine building a power station with all those huge infrastructure, the time consuming is essential?

My friend and, possibly, a colleague, don't waste precious time preaching the truth. People don't want to hear the truth. What people want is convenient lies, that is all. For years I decide to waste some of my time and explain generating capacity, transmission capacity, how I live at a place where about 1 kW is generated per each citizen at ANY GIVEN MOMENT, and then compare it with Nigeria. I then explain how Nigeria would have to increase the generating capacity by 4o to 50 TIMES in order to achieve REAL 24/7 supply, and that assuming that all power plants are maintained and kept operational at full capacity.

In simple terms, that means that, for each power plant in existence today, Nigeria has to build over 40 new power plants. can Nigeria do it in our lifetime? I believe so. But that would only be possible if not a single kobo is embezzled until the job is done. And is THAT possible? I think we all know the answer. And then you get a polithiefcian who will promise the masses 24/7 supply of electricity, but only if HE gets elected.
God bless, it is very difficult for people to understand technical terms, I blame TCN/NERC who are closer to Govt for not informing the public the real ground!

I stand to disagree with anybody who told him/you that Transmission is the problem.
Is there anytime you have ever heard in the history of this Nation that GenCos generated Power that can't be evacuated by TCN?
Go and verify in the NERC data who got more sanctions for failing to meet the market Rules of failing to meet the market agreement of Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
DisCos refuse to upgrade their power equipment, if not because Nigeria Transmit power to about 9 West-African countries there would have been serious disaster in the side of DisCos because they can't take the current capacity. One of the reasons Generation capacity remain stagnant is because you can't Generate what can't be consumed in a market based power system.

ogododo:
To say that it is ‘appalling and disheartening’ that Nigeria’s power sector is yet to witness the needed improvement for greater impact on the people and the economy despite the huge amount of money sunk into it by successive governments is an understatement.

That, however, was how the Executive Chairman, Board of Directors, Geregu Power Plc, Mr Femi Otedola described the state of the power sector during the week.

Otedola who though, who acknowledged that the sector has its challenges, noted however that, they are surmountable problems. The major problem he pointed out, is transmission and everyone wonders as he did, why it has seemed impossible for successive governments to fix the issue of transmission.

Baring his mind on the sector while speaking at the “Closing Gong ceremony” and commemoration of the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company on the floor of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) in Lagos, Otedola revealed the hard truth that if the power sector was well organised it would be cheaper and have a lot of positive impact on the manufacturing sector as well as the entire economy of the country.

“The power sector has a lot of problems but they’re surmountable problems. It’s a matter of leadership in the country and willpower. If power is well organised, it’s even cheaper.

“We will get there, it’s a matter of time.”

The business mogul queried why it’s difficult for the country to improve on the amount of power it generates when an individual like Aliko Dangote, has built 2000 megawatts for his plants. “Aliko, an individual has built 2000 megawatts of power for cement, fertilizer plants and refinery. And the country where I was born, has only 5000 megawatts. “So it’s appalling and disheartening that all the successive governments have failed in this regard but I believe we are now at the stage where the power sector will get a lot of attention and priority. We have new plants still sitting idle that the government built years ago and the real problem is transmission, there is a need to look in this direction,” he said.

He further said that Geregu was taking necessary steps to expand its capacity to deliver improved performance and maximise shareholders’ wealth, stressing that the challenges in the sector could be tackled if the government sets its priority right. For starters, he believes that the best way would be the engagement of investors in the sector.

“Any government that thinks well will look for entrepreneurs in this sector that have committed so much capital and time and let them sort out the problem.

“If the government then did not invite Aliko to build a cement factory and create an enabling environment, today we’ll still be importing cement.”

While celebrating Geregu’s achievements on its first anniversary as a listed company, Otedola emphasised that for any company to sustain its wealth, there was a need for it to be listed on the stock exchange.

“To sustain wealth, you need to list your company on the stock exchange”, he stated, adding, “We’ve come with a lot of firsts; the first power company to list on the Exchange, the first power company to embark on an aggressive 300 % expansion drive; the first company to release its results on the stock market.”

In a related development, Doron Grupper, a director of the power holding company, who is satisfied with the achievements of the power company so far, disclosed that Geregu boasts of professionals and good management to increase its capacity. “I’ve been with Geregu for years now since we started the power station. I think this power station according to my experience, works on natural gas. We have a great team of professionals, and good management to increase our capacity.

“We are producing today, 450 megawatts but we have the potential for the next two years to increase to 1300 megawatts. We have the money, and we have the people but we need the assistance of the government of Nigeria to solve some problems with the gas issues.

“We have a huge potential to increase and to contribute to Nigeria in the power sector and to increase the quantities and capacity of electricity to the people of Nigeria.”

Grupper who spoke to Arise, TV correspondent, on the sideline of the NGX event on Tuesday, stated that the gas challenges have to do with the price of gas which he noted, is still low so there’s a need to increase it. The challenges also have to do with the quantity of gas and, “the pressure of the pipeline; we need to increase it. These are the three main issues that the government need to take care of and to assist us to increase the capacity.”

“I hope that in the near future, we will come into a new era of electricity here in Nigeria,” he added.

On how much investments have been put in Geregu, he said, “When we bought the power station back in 2015 we produced 113 megawatts. We made a major overhaul to get to 450. Now, we are doing a major overhaul again…more than 250 million dollars altogether.”

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/04/nigeria-has-generated-only-5000-megawatts-since-i-was-born-femi-otedola-laments/
What many Nigerians don't understand is Nigeria has around 20000MW generation capacity with 8100MW transmission capacity and may likely reach 15000-18000MW while Distribution capacity remain 5000MW. So, in this case billions of Naira will be lost daily if we generate what Distribution system can't evacuate, therefore in as much as DisCos won't upgrade their capacity power will always remain a problem in Nigeria. Power is very expensive and small mistake will cost huge billions naira loss.
Those who privatized power to cronies who never had intention to upgrade it should be blamed.

I did my NYSC in Safana Town in Katsina State. I love your line of argument but I disagree to an extent.

The fact is that those that benefit from Politicians influenced employment opportunities are never children of the poor. They belong to upper and middle class families and may be children of those who serve the Emirs in various capacities. They are rarely children of the majority poor.

Another fact is that the schools attended by children of the poor don't have required number of teachers, which means faulty educational foundation. Sometimes, when I think about those ever-happy young boys I taught in Safana R/B School, I often pray they would somehow navigate to success in life given the poor educational foundation they had. For them, taking advantage of the employment opportunities you mentioned is impossible.

I remember with fondness how I invested money, planted seasonal beans with some of these students and shared the harvest which I took home to Anambra State. It therefore makes me sad how agriculture and food processing are neglected by State Governments that should have used it to empower millions of young people.

Average Northern Nigerian youth I encountered as a corp member was too kind-hearted to engage in atrocities of the bandits. Something went wrong. I have read about the philosophy of Sar'duana of Sokoto and I dare say none of the current leaders are going near that.

Thanks for engaging in this intellectual argument. I got enlightened to an extent though.
A lot of good will of Northern founding fathers is being wasted and abandoned by uninformed leaders of today.
Point of correction is, Emirs and traditional rulers are still highly respected but lack any political influence to the extent that they beg politicians for positions, contract and jobs for their children.
I'm very close to politicians, well grounded, my father was ordinary school teacher but I grew up and initiated connections. Minister took me to one of the most lucrative agency in Nigeria, hundreds of children of poor have gotten offers in the MDAs I pointed. I have a friend, son to an Emir struggling to get job, youths have woken up and are asking for paths to survive. The 60 qualified children from only public institutions Jigawa state Governor took to china to study Medicine end of last tenure have come back and passed Council exam and absorbed this week, 98% of them are from poor families.
Honourables are ranked with jobs or empowerment they give to their supporters. Look at Kano case and the political pronouncement coming out for just picking the children of poor only.
I strongly believe that a decade back the education was good to some extent but now the quality has gone and affected those attending public institutions.

I have been wondering what are the offences of the president elect that has made all kinds of human beings in Nigeria to hurl abuses at him. Currently, he is the most abused person in Nigeria today.

No nation abuses their presidents and public office holders in the world like Nigerians do.

Recently, Tinubu confessed that he no longer read the social media because of the way Nigerians abuses him. What has he done to warrant those derogatory insults like a thief, druggie etc. What did he steal and which court convicted him of stealing?

Some of these folks who abuse Tinubu come from regions where they have no respect for their elders. Many of them have never seen Tinubu nor had any interaction with him yet, they hurl abuses on someone's husband and father. Can they allow their fathers to be insulted this way?

Some go to the extent of accusing of stealing a mandate that belongs to another political gladiator without prove.

I strongly believe that someday Providence will vindicate Asiwaju. I have a good upbringing just like any omoluabi not to insult elders or accuse them falsely.

I believe that God will use Tinubu to change our narrative in this country. Then those abuses will have boomeranged effects.

You need to know more abt Northern political case rather than dwelling on lies and jealousy.
It is only in the North that Buhari, Yakubu Gowon, IBB, Abacha, El Rufai, Sule Lamiɗo, Kwankwaso among many others from poor families rose to be who they're today. More than 90% of Northern leaders/politicians are from poor families, thousands of Northerners from poor families are employed in strategic and most lucrative positions in CBN, NIMASA, NPA, TCN, DPR, FIRS and OAG and other MDAs due to the political nature of the North to the extent that any Legislature at HoA and Senate who can't get employment offers to the people (masses) you are ignorantly mocking won't go back to NASS.
I beg u to go and verify thousands of job offers Ahmad Lawan (SP), Ahmad Babba Kaita, Hon. Kusada, Da'u Aliyu, Suleman Goro, Lawan Kazaure (Protocol Director of the President), Sabiu Tunde, Abubakar Malami, I swear to God if you see the masses who benefitted from these job offers given to Northern masses under this administration by Head of MDAs, Ministers, politicians you will never disrespect North the way you were made to believe, never in your life!

Is Femi Fani Kayode working for Tinubu or against him? Why is acting like a b*tch on heat? APC and Tinubu should call this loudmouth to order immediately.

A diplomat of a strong ally of Nigeria made a complaint about your unnecessarily jaundiced opinion and you are reacting as though he slept with your wife. Yes, Nigeria is an independent nation but you can always communicate that like a mentally-balanced human being.

FFK should know that a president Tinubu needs UK more than he needs him. Statements by UK and their EU brothers that they can't work with Tinubu on account of his association with drugs would put Tinubu's presidency in legitimacy crisis. FFK should know that Tinubu, under little diplomatic pressure, can dump him like a smelly thrash in order to maintain a smooth relationship with UK.
This mental inferiority from u is too much, I'm happy to see more Southerners becoming bold and removing the shackles of fear against whites just like us in the North, kudos to FFK in this case.
Your statement about UK or EU releasing statement abt not working with Tinubu Govt proven more of ur mental inferiority. Those Nations work with evil people and Satan comfortably than good people. They're more evil than anything on earth.
Go and grow balls, Bleep the UK and EU!

PoliticsI Know Things That Will Not Happen Under Tinubu Presidency by ArewaNorth(op): 10:43pm On Mar 26, 2023
I know things that will not happen under Tinubu presidency – Senator Hadejia, former Jigawa deputy governor

Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, a lawyer, is a politician, one-term deputy governor and Senator of the 9th National Assembly, representing Jigawa North East Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an interview with the Sunday Sun, Hadejia spoke on the just-concluded 2023 general elections, the aftermath, restructuring and leadership, among others. Excerpts:

The 2023 elections have come and gone, but its effects are yet to settle especially the presidential election that was allegedly mired with controversies. Many have condemned and called it a sham, while some others have commended it, what is your take?

Well, I do not think there is any competitive election that will not generate controversy. Nigerians typically do not accept defeat easily, it used to be very bad because of the quality of elections we had, but I think as elections are getting a bit more refined, the agitation is reducing. For example, in 2019 after the elections in Jigawa State, we waited for results for three weeks for any petition to come from the tribunal, but there was no single petition that was instituted at the tribunal. So, if you have generally free and fair elections, the chances of noise making will be reduced. Again, if we say we will condemn election because somebody claimed that he is in doubt, we can just take a clue from what happened in the US in 2020; 74 million Republicans voted for Donald Trump, as at today, if one takes a poll, it is discovered that over 70 per cent of them believed Trump won the election and it was stolen from him; do we now say that election was not free and fair?

Somehow, most Nigerians were highly disappointed by the conduct of INEC, what do you think about the integrity of the highly rated institution? The outcome of the elections has made Nigerians lose confidence in INEC?

For me, I do not think the integrity of INEC has been compromised in any way because we are being very unfair to INEC which has come a long way. People forget very easily that in 1999-2003, we had elections under certain chairman of INEC that produced a 100 per cent turnout and 100 per cent winning in favour of one party; go and check the results of Rivers 2003 gubernatorial and presidential election, when the result came out, 97 per cent came out and voted for a particular party, there was no invalid vote, nothing. We have a situation in this country where people who were taxi drivers in United States were brought back and issued Certificate of Return. Meanwhile, they were not even aware that election took place in Nigeria, but certificates were issued to them. We have moved from that situation to a situation where it is almost impossible for one to rig elections. Nigerian elections are rigged during accreditation. But we did not have biometric accreditation during our own point in time, so elections are held either a night before with all the thumb printed voters’ card where everybody came out to vote; or on the day of election all the unused ballot papers are thumb printed in favour of one or the other, but now all that are impossible. In the recently concluded election, there was card reader and BVAS; yet people that are condemning this election are doing so out of the ignorance of the Electoral Act. Everybody is giving his or her own interpretation, the crux of the matter is the transmission of the result. Go and look at the Electoral Act, there is no where it is stated that INEC should transmit result on a real time basis, it is not even possible to do that because we are not doing electronic voting. The law says that INEC should use BVAS to accredit; then the results that are even uploaded are not raw results, they are the pictures of the manual result sheets. What is happening in Abuja at the collation centers was just a show. The results have just been compiled and everyone knew the result. Most parties have their situation rooms, they also have their agents taking the pictures with their phones and sending results to their situation rooms. So, most of these people making noise are aware of the result and now they are using the excuse of transmission; nobody has compelled INEC to transmit result. The compulsion is for INEC to maintain an electronic database of result where interested parties can ask for digital copies which INEC would certify and give to them in case they are going to the tribunal and INEC has complied with that. The uploading of the result even if one looks at the Electoral Act is a gradual process; nobody anticipates that everything would be uploaded at the same time. If you have an electoral ward with polling units, all the polling units will start and finish their elections at different times, so people are ignorant of the Electoral Act and giving various interpretations. Note that not everything you read in the newspaper or hear people discuss on television are true. Therefore, going to the tribunal and getting justice, there is no other option other than the constitution and the law; one would go to the tribunal and end up at the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal; depending on which level of the election. The burden of proof when one alleges that there were election malpractices is on the petitioner and it is a very difficult burden to proof. If one has a margin of three million votes, it is not enough for you to go and say that a polling unit result is questionable or a whole ward result had been destroyed, even if you have to take out those polling units that has been tampered or rigged out, the number of potential votes are enough to upset; most of the time you see results being overturned is simply in occasion of margin being very close, so that if you prove in several polling units or local governments and the tally is done, you get your result. If you have enough evidence to wipe away about 1.5million votes, please go ahead by all means.
One would be surprised that by the time you go to the election tribunal and start seeing the evidence of rigging and voter suppression to my knowledge will actually be coming out from the areas where the petitioner has won.
You cannot eat your cake and have it; you cannot have a situation where you win in states where you would not have made an impact, or you win senatorial seats and lose the presidential and get to court to inform them that senatorial election was okay, but I want my presidential cancelled. No, it does not work that way. Question of justice is not automatic especially when you lose an election and go to the tribunal, you have to ensure that what you are going to prove will be proved beyond reasonable doubt, and you would have proven that there are enough discrepancies in the election result to wipe out the margin between you and the opponent.

With the entrance of Labor Party and its political equation change, should they be watched in recent elections?

You are absolutely right that the Labour Party’s entrance has changed the political equation so much; but I do not want to put judgment on the impact of Labour Party on the national polity until I see the outcome of all the gubernatorial polls. I know there will be some surprises because presidential polls are one thing, and gubernatorial polls are another, it depends on the part of the country you go to, some people give more credence to governorship election because it is closer to them. Presidential poll in the course of the build up to election, the polity was mired in all sorts of divisive practices, religion played a role; for example, if you look at the role of the Labour Party, you can obviously see that religious card were being played. That might not be applicable in other elections. So, I will not hold judgement on that until I see the outcome of the gubernatorial election. I am also certain that the Lagos State election will be a far cry from what we saw at the presidential. So, when the dust is settled, we will see what happens. It is one thing to ride the popular wave and get to where you are, it is also another to sustain it. I have actually played opposition politics which is very difficult to maintain like the Labour Party, they have to maintain that tempo that has brought them to where they are. If they continue to play ethnic and religious cards, I can assure you that they will lose out.

Are you of the opinion that without restructuring Nigeria, even the best leadership will not deliver, what do you say to this?

For me, the issue of restructuring is neither here nor there, we went through the process of constitutional reforms and public hearings in the state, you will be surprised that some of the people who are agitating for restructuring, if you ask them their idea and how they want the country to be restructured, you will be surprised that most of them do not know. I then asked, what do they want about reform? Some of the issues we are talking about reform have not been given a chance, have not been tried, so what are we talking about reform? My take is that we have a leadership issue in Nigeria to be very honest with you because the kind of competence and capabilities that we should have in leadership which is expected to take us to the Promised Land has been missing and if we like, restructure this country into 60 different components, if we have lackluster leadership, we will not get out of the woods. We need leaders that will do the right thing, focus on the economy, take this country out of doldrums, give people a sense of direction because they are tired. If you have a leader who is doing the right thing, impacting on the lives of her citizens, nobody gives a hoot about restructuring or whether the leader comes from one side of the country or another. It is a question of leadership, not about restructuring.

What is that one problem you think Nigeria has and what plausible solution can you offer?

The problem with Nigeria is almost what I said earlier, the need for credible, competent relationship that will build without sentiment and focus on competence, unexploited capabilities and potential opportunities that we have missed. Again, taking a very hard look at governance in Nigeria, budgeting process, size and structure of civil service and take some very difficult decisions. For political dispensations, our two term political dispensations create its own problem. I am an advocate of one-term presidency, give somebody six or seven years so that he is not pulled back by the thought of re-election so he can take the difficult decisions. I have a lot of faith in the new government that is coming in. It is very rare to see a president campaigning, being asked difficult questions and he gives honest answers. President-elect Tinubu said he will do away with subsidy and this is what this present government has been dancing around with, even if you look at the budget for 2023, they provided for subsidy for the next two or three months. The Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) outlawed subsidy, because they thought it was a political issue, they played around it. Then, for somebody who boldly says, forget it, I will do away with subsidy, these are the kind of courageous leaders that we need, somebody who will take the bull by the horns. Then again, let us look at re-organizing and restructuring the civil service; we cannot afford the situation where we are spending over N8 trillion on recurrent, paying civil servants who will now superintend a budget that is less than the capital budget, their overhead. There is more to Nigerian than the number of civil servants, we have over 200 million people. So, I think the problem is leadership. We need leaders who can take some hard decisions especially on reforms in the Petroleum and Monetary policies, all these dual exchange rates rubbish have to go away. If you take combination of what we are losing to maintain dual exchange rates, paying trillions in subsidy, when they are combined, the public did not need to borrow what we borrowed to keep this country going. So, we need visionary leadership, a leader who will look into our eyes and tell us we will take some hard decisions which will be hard in the beginning, we all have to sacrifice.

What agenda would you want to set for the incoming president?

I think the man has set out his agenda even before he was elected. I said earlier that surprisingly, before election, the man talked about the removal of subsidy which is very sensitive and dear to the hearts of Nigerians, his take on the fiasco of de-monetization exercise where he was bold enough to disagree with the policy and said if given chances, he would do something about it. Again, listening to him talk to the business community, the kind of vibes I got are very encouraging. I think the man has his own agenda. I do not think there is anything wrong with his agenda, though contributions can come later. Let us focus on steering and directing in the right direction, policies and competence that will have impact. Let us also focus on putting together a team that will have task of delivering these objectives and if they fail, we have the courage to change them. You cannot have the same set of ministers for eight years despite the failure we have in some places. I do not think it can happen under a Tinubu presidency. The man has his own agenda; I cannot add anything to it.

Based on calls from notable Nigerians, do you think the INEC chairman should resign?

For INEC chairman to resign? I do not think so. I rather think that INEC has been giving an unfair treatment by Nigerians looking at what is happening. All these noise about INEC is borne out of absolute ignorance. People are hiding under the cover of transmission of result, giving their own interpretation of Electoral Act and nobody is looking at the fact that with BVAS, accreditation process, accreditation being sent wirelessly to servers; all these are challenging. The electoral process has been transformed in Nigeria whether we like it or not, unless one is too young to remember how elections were done in Nigeria and ask the chairman should resign. There is no election that is perfect in the whole world including the top democracies of the world. We still have issues surrounding the American election where over 40-50 per cent of the country do not believe that election was credible; it was an insinuation. But in Nigeria, we have come a long way, what the BVAS and accreditation process has done to election sanctity in Nigeria is not comparable to anything in Africa. The technology we are deploying now are not in some of the Western democracies yet, people complain which I see as a total lack of understanding and their expectation which were not held by INEC. In fact, INEC went on air and said they would do real time transmission of results when they knew they could not; one does not use technical terms like that. .
When one says real time, it connotes instantaneous, which means something would happen immediately; there is nothing like real time transmission of result because it is only at electronic voting environment can you have your votes being sent or transmitted as results to collation centres, we do not have that. INEC will upload result on a continuous basis that connotes it will take time and that is the essence of the Electoral Act.
It does not say that you will wake up at 6:00p.m and see all the results there. What the law compels INEC to do is to ensure that all the results are digitalized and warehoused in a server where people can access them, then if you are going to tribunal, you can ask INEC to print out and certify the results if their fees are paid.
I do not think it is fair to ask the INEC Chairman to resign coming from where we are. Elections are getting credible in Nigeria, if not they will not have the diversity they have. You will not have Labour Party having the kind of road-way they had in the nation’s electoral map. It is simply not possible. What we have now is to focus on internal democracy.
