PoliticsPort Harcourt-maiduguri Railway Project Suspended Over Insecurity – FG by ArewaNorth(op): 4:56pm On Sep 03, 2022
The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, says the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Eastern rail line rehabilitation has been suspended due to insecurity and vandalism of railway property along the corridor.
The minister disclosed this during the inspection of the transportation infrastructure in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCEC), the contractor handling the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the project, had complained of attacks on its workers along the Abia State axis.
The minister urged the media and the judiciary to collaborate with the Ministry to ensure that these economic saboteurs are not only exposed but prosecuted and sentenced speedily to serve as a deterrent to others.
On the issue that funds meant for the rail line is diverted to other projects, the Minister said it was fake news as the progress made so far is from the 15 per cent of the counterpart funding by Nigeria while the 85 per cent to be provided by foreign partners is still under negotiation.

PoliticsWhy Dubai Is Denying Nigerians Entry by ArewaNorth(op):
The Chairperson of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed why Nigerian travellers to Dubai are being turned back home despite having valid visas.

Recall that some Nigerians who travelled recently to Dubai were detained at the airport and their passports seized. Few were seen demanding answers after their passports were seized without explanation.

‘‘What the Dubai authorities have done is this, they have made the visa processes more stringent. If you are below 30, there is no visa for you; it is so difficult. They make it so stringent that you won’t be able to fulfil it; it does not matter who you are.

‘‘Secondly, if you are going to Dubai now, you have to provide a six-month bank statement, you have your ticket, and you must show proof of accommodation where you are going to stay. If you lie about where you are going to stay, they are going to know, so they are going to turn you back,” Dabiri-Erewa stated while featuring on a programme on Arise Tv.

She advised Nigerians to stop giving the country a bad name.

PoliticsNEDC Launches ₦31 Trillion Develoment Master Plan To Rebuild North East by ArewaNorth(op): 10:48am On Sep 02, 2022
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has launched the North East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP) to revive economic activities in the region.

Speaking at the validation meeting of the master plan Thursday in Abuja, the Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed G. Alkali, said the plan was necessitated by the NEDC Act that required the commission to “develop a master plan based on the needs assessment of the zone.”

Consequently, the commission had engaged stakeholders and conducted study in 121 local governments in the six states in the zone to identify interventions that would revive activities.

Alkali said the master plan contains over 500 programmes and schemes that would promote and facilitate the physical and socio-economic development of the zone to be implemented in 10 years (2020-2030).

“Its implementation is in four phases; Recovery & Stabilisation (2020-2021), Renewal (2022 – 2023), Expansion (2024 – 2025) and Sustainable Growth (2026 – 2030).

“It consists of 11 pillars and the cost of implementation is forecasted at N31.05 trillion, about $80 billion, substantially coming from the private Sector.”

In his remarks, the governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, urged the commission to communicate on interventions it is carrying out in the region with their state governments to avoid repetition of activities.

While stating that the commission must avoid all forms of political pressure in carrying out its duties, he said efforts should be directed to “major highways linking state capitals and other national and international borders; rail networks linking state capitals and other industrial Gas pipelines.”

He also urged the commission to keep an eye on opportunities for partnerships with the private sector to invest in manufacturing and industries that would create jobs and spur growth.

On his part, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, urged stakeholders to invest in the region as it was witnessing improved security and gradually returning to sustainable peace and stability.

Point of correction, Iyorchia Ayu is from Benue and Benue lies in the middle belt and not northern region
Don't look stupid and ignorant!
The fact that Cameroon is boardered with Nigeria doesn't make her West African but Central African. I don't know how much brain do you need to understand that regions aren't defined by region, religion or ethnicity but the boundary created that defined particular area.
Should we call some portion of Rivers State boardered with Imo state geographically South-East because the people their speak Igbo?
Should we push some portion of Jigawa state who speak Kanuri North-Easterners because they're closer to Yobe?
When a demarcation is made, a clear definition and geographical location is given to that place.
If you are ignorant of what middlebelt means, you need to know the acceptable and common understanding of the geographical location of middlebelt states; states of Nigeria which are generally referred to as belonging to the Middle Belt are: old Plateau (now Plateau and Nasarawa), old Gongola (now Adamawa and Taraba), Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, alongside Southern Kaduna, Southern Bauchi, Southern Kebbi, Southern Gombe, Southern Yobe State
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Belt

In Nigeria, we only have two regions, North and South which are further divided into 3 zones each in the two regions. South have South-South, South-East and Sout-West while North is divided into North-Central, North-East and North-West.

PoliticsRe: Buhari’s Four Unacceptable REC Nominees by ArewaNorth: 5:19pm On Aug 31, 2022
treesun:
Since he reluctantly assented to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which allows the transmission of election results from the polling units after intense pressure, President Muhammadu Buhari has been assuring us of his willingness to allow the 2023 general elections to be free and fair.

However, his habit of taking measures to tamper with the independence and integrity of the National Electoral Commission, INEC, right from the inception of his government in 2015, runs contrary to this pledge. In June 2015, he appointed his relative, Amina Zakari, an INEC Commissioner, as the Acting Chairman.

Also, in October 2020, the president raised dust when he nominated his controversial social media aide, Lauretta Onochie, as a Resident Electoral Commissioner. Nigerians fought the nomination to a standstill until Buhari was forced to drop her.

With just five months to the 2023 general elections, the president has again proposed 19 candidates for approval by the Senate as RECs. Nine civil society organisations, after tooth-combing the list, identified four names as politically-exposed persons who are unsuitable for appointment as RECs of the Electoral Umpire.

These are Muhammad Bashir, an All Progressives Congress, APC, Sokoto State governorship candidate in 2015; Sylvia Uchenna, a direct relation of the APC Deputy National Chairman (South-East) from Enugu State; Pauline Ugochi, a former Head of ICT of INEC in Imo State who was once alleged to have connived with politicians to undermine the integrity of elections; and Elizabeth Agwu, a former Accountant-General of Ebonyi State suspended for alleged incompetence and misconduct in 2016.

The CSOs want the Senate to drop these nominees because their appointment will run contrary to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended). Section 156(1)(a) stresses that such an appointee shall not belong to a political party, while the Third Schedule, Part 1, Item F, paragraph 14(2), in addition to the non-partisan requirement, insists that such a person shall be of “unquestionable integrity”.

Some of Buhari’s supporters claim that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, did the same during their time in power, while others claim the president may not know the candidates’ antecedents. We disagree with these. If what PDP did was right, why did the APC call for change in 2015? Secondly, is it not the duty of the president’s office to scrutinise the records of names forwarded to him for appointment into sensitive public offices? This is political corruption.

President Buhari is not a stranger to the appointment of his personal loyalists and relations into the INEC. We call on the Senate to drop the four names. The National Assembly exists to check the Executive’s excesses and defend the people’s power to elect their leaders. The people’s faith in our elections is at a very high level, which is why the rush for voter registration was unprecedented.

The Constitution must be upheld.

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/08/buharis-four-unacceptable-rec-nominees/
PDP appointed Professor Yakubu as Executive Secretary of TETFUND because of his similar relationship with them and Buhari now appointed him INEC Boss. Almost all INEC staffs who came through nomination under PDP were PDP members.

Emotional people and those who are ignorant of politics think that politics require apologies to make alliance. Politics is extremely dirty game that only poor people think tricks, deliberate accusations to convince electorates, propaganda, intimidation or incitation of ethno-religious tension isn't part of politicking. In politics blood relationship doesn't matter at all nor friendship because the players are fully aware of the fact that the game only knows how to win election and nothing more. I learn that some people who have been asking others to apologize to GEJ are very ignorant of politics. Can't you see how OBJ and Atiku supported Buhari in 2015? OBJ and Atiku are the worst set of Democratic leaders Nigeria has ever had. They play all set of conspiracies, traps which include alleged political assassinations of many prominent political ally of Buhari or opposition parties in Nigeria, they supervised the worst electoral process in the history of Nigeria but finally came together and supported him to win 2015 election. Do you think all the letters Baba Aremu write in condemnation of Buhari's performance means hate? Think again!
Remember, the bad relationship between Buhari and IBB, after 1984 coup against Buhari's Govt IBB denied Buhari visiting his ailing mother, he only allowed him to attend her mourning gathering not even her funeral when he was jailedd by IBB, but IBB supported him in 2015 election.
Current APC Chairman had his thugs attacked Buhari campaign crowd in Nasarawa during his campaign at Lafiya in 2003.
Do you think the feud between Kwankwaso and Ganduje is beyond politics?
There are many examples of this but the masses of Nigeria particularly your people have taken this issue on their head always asking others to apologize to GEJ because you know nothing about politics. Politics is a very dirty game that some politicians used to say, "is better to lose a mother than to lose election", ponder well about this!
PoliticsThose Calling For My Resignation Are Kids, Ayu To Wike’s Camp by ArewaNorth(op): 1:28pm On Aug 31, 2022
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, has said all those calling for his resignation are children that were not around when the party was formed.

The camp of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has given Ayu’s resignation as one of the conditions that has to be fulfilled to resolve the post-presidential primaries crisis rocking the opposition party.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had defeated Wike in the presidential primaries of the party. Although Atiku was asked to consider Wike as running mate, he had settled for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, to the dismay of the Rivers governor and his supporters.

Wike’s supporters have argued that it is unfair for the party’s chairman and its presidential flagbearer to hail from the same region.

But speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Ayu said those calling for his resignation were nowhere to be found when they struggled to form the party.

Ayu added that he was not bothered by the call for his resignation.

“I was voted as PDP Chairman for a four-year tenure and I’m yet to complete a year. Atiku’s victory doesn’t affect the Chairman’s position. I won my election based on our party’s constitution.”

“I didn’t commit any offense I’m only reforming the party so I’m not bothered with all the noises. I know I’m doing my work and I didn’t steal any money so I see no reason for all these talks. When we started PDP, these children were not around. They are children who do not know why we formed the party. We will not allow any individual to destabilize our party,” he said.

In your assessment, is right to reduce innocent children to almajiri beggers?

Why can't we make parents responsible for their children instead of abandoning them with a Mallam that will enslave them.

It will be easier for terrorists to recruit abandoned and hungry children let's face reality.

Almajiri is an act of institutionalizing poverty that we are facing the consequences now.

Remember that this hungry children called almajiri were the ones that brought coronavirus to the North leading to death of thousands of people.
I can see how you reduced the blame from elites/rich Northerners to abandoned parent's responsibilities which I'm pleased with. I never and can never support the almajir system but I made it clear that it's conservative Northerners who are adhering to the tradition that still attach themselves to the almajiri system. The tycoons from the region I quoted is just an effort to give you reference of how even the accused passed through the same system.
Some leaders are just afraid of their political career that is why they refuse to abolish the system.
The system is completely corrupted and not at all how it used to be. In the old system, the almajiris go to school and read 3 times a day; morning, afternoon and evening and begging was never part of the system. However, now instead of schooling, they roam around begging and can easily be a target for social vices. Note: The word “Almajiri” is derived from the Arabic “Al muhajirun”, “an emigrant”. It usually refers to a person who migrates from his home to a popular teacher in the quest for Islamic knowledge. This is the basis of the Almajiri system in what became Northern Nigeria.

90% of Northern leaders today are from poor family and product of free education.

Among the past and present Northern Governors beside Sani Bello, Ali Modu Sherif, Umaru Musa Yaradua tell me other Governor whose father was rich or prominent/elite in the North before they become Governors. Tell me if beside Yaradua there is other President from the North whose father was rich or very prominent.
Today, the Emirs, kings and other traditional rulers are bootlicking and become very sycophants so that they can survive on the mercy of children of masses they so much overlooked. Go and see how Kwankwwso dealt with Ado Bayero how Late Abubakar Rimi dealt with Ado Bayero, how Sule Lamido dwal with traditional institutions, go and read about the exemplary Political struggle of Mallam Amknu Kano and how it shaped the current political system and atmosphere in the North by extremely dealing with traditional rulers snd elites. Read about NEPU: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Elements_Progressive_Union
Please, you southerners need to respect yourself by rejecting these non-existing lies peddle to you in deep ignorance about the Northern elites and their masses. I concede that adherence to culture and conservative nature of Northern population is responsible for what you can't understand from far. For a herder, cow is his god and can't trade the system for anything. Almajiri system gave birth to Abdussamad Rabiu BUA, Muhammad Indimi and Dangote lineage among most North business tycoons, infact most northern business men above 60yrs in most markets in the north are products of almajiri system.
Those years, the conservative Northerners believed that only through almajiri system can children dedicate their time and focus in their studies and help build children to become resilient and hardworking.
The ruling class that whites mate were traditional rulers, and their children are now servants of rulers who emanated from poor homes. Go and learn the education status of Northern Nigeria prior to independence and how rich men and traditional rulers refused to send their children to school and feign by using children of poor after being forced to send their children to school and end up being ruled by their old servants.

Sardauna was the most hated in his family and had access to education before struggle for independence exposed him to struggle that only educated people are needed which gave him edge over his most loved brothers at Sultan palace.

When whites who were all Christians came to Nigeria as colonial masters, more than 80% of Northerners could read and write using Arabic letters (Ajami) but the intention of whites to imposed English on the North suffered serious resistance due to so many reasons.
The resistance caused delay for the acceptance of Western education in the North for so many decades as a result of the suspicion of their attempt to force Christianity on the North unlike their illiterates counter parts on some parts of the south who had no both religious and formal education.

Pls read widely and stop being dogmatic!

CareerRe: Is Studying Engineering Now A Scam In Nigeria by ArewaNorth: 4:30pm On Aug 29, 2022
othermen:
As a young fellow getting started in his career, you are doing great observing what may be prevalent.

I think young people should try to get some education about their chances- as you have or as you desire before going to the university to study any course.

You have to consider which is foremost to you- is it to have a successful career in whatever endeavour or to become a successful engineer; if it is the former, such that you are desiring a career for the success output, you may need to assess other courses aside Engineering that may provide readily available opportunities for you.

Increasingly, renowned courses like Law and Engineering needs to be re-assessed by those aspiring for a career in either. Most people are rather desiring for paid employment, when the fields actually has several opportunities to be self-employed, becoming a consulting professional or getting into some start-up.

Engineering is a wonderful course- however the formal labour market in Nigeria may not be so much great or wonderful for the discipline.

While there seem to be far limited formal opportunities for engineers than there are engineers, for those that persevere, and got opportunity to practice in their field- they often have the best outcomes in terms of prosperity when compared with other disciplines. (Check Aerospace Engineering).

There are some engineering courses that gives you significant edge in the informal labour market. Such that you can start your own enterprise right away and become an employer of labour as well. Now, the difficulty with this is the cost of start up and the competence we have instilled which is not geared towards self sufficiency or entrepreneurial spirit. Engineering, accounting or finance, medicine among others are all professional courses that don't require additional post-graduate degrees to maximise the opportunities they may afford. You just have to have right mindset of problem identification and solving to being a structural analyst.

Most engineers that went through Nigeria universities have had little exposure to practical training in Engineering. The universities have focused more on theoretical engineering- when engineering is mostly a practical course. The faculties could have been innovative in building massive workshop that can help instill the requisite skills that would propel a desirable career in most of their alumni; however they are frustrated by the nonchalance of the FG which has crushed what should be the faculty imagination.

What then is the option left to the engineer who can’t get a chance in the formal engineering labour market or who don’t have the resource for a start up?

So a civil engineer for instance could personally take on the supervision of construction or re-construction of housing units or other building structures- massive ones and the small residential ones. In many residential areas in Lagos, you have civil engineers approach owners of old building structures with great plans to pull down and reconstruct the buildings at their own cost, while such arrangement gives them some form of leasehold on the newly constructed building say a two flats now devolved into a six flats. They could have a long term leasehold on 2 of those flats. Now you don’t have to be a civil engineer to do such, you just need to have the requisite skills. However the Engineering discipline gives a confidence in such prospective customers that non-engineers approaching can offer them. Some civil engineers have made more money more than those working in Shell BP by exploring such.

Mechanical engineers on the other hand, also just need a little support to get started in the informal labour market; in sane schools- they are taught the competence to be able to design about anything. As at today, the universities may not offer as much technical skills as you may see in a polytechnic or some technical schools. The mechanical engineer must be humble enough to realize this. After getting around such, the issue then may be the cost of designing whatsoever they desire designing which may be highly demanding and in a nation that don’t support innovation, you have to look elsewhere. I know mechanical engineers that specialize in plumbing for very big building construction firms - designing and supervising the plumbing. Now, some ignorant mechanical engineers sees plumbing as a mere apprenticeship exercise, but with one’s credentials- you become even more feasible for opportunities. This is aside those, that are probably into constructions or repairs of factory machines and intensive trucks such as drilling machines.

I think ultimately in addition to what you may acquire from this thread - you have to understand that becoming successful as an engineer is a function of your own mindset. And for some people with the right mindset, it is in a place like Nigeria where several things don’t seem to work- that there are opportunities. There is no electricity / then there is a market for affordable power plans such that an electrical engineer who is innovative and adaptable can provide affordable solar energy technology to people. Get on LinkedIn, take a look at the profiles of engineers working in great firms, look at the unique skills they have, look at the career choices they have made. It could help you create your own template.

Don’t make costly assumptions based on what you may find in your immediate environment. Many of those people are products of a dysfunctional mindset or of a mindset compelled by the tragic realities of Nigeria. However if you have incorporated such reality in your methodological mindset, you should excel well in engineering or in any discipline you so choose. Those working in the manufacturing that you have interacted with are mostly products of technical education, and they provide supports and take instructions from the engineers, while those who attended universities that you interact with have little to no technical expertise. Again, if you build a methodological mindset towards your career, engineering can give you so much.
May God bless you!
CareerRe: Is Studying Engineering Now A Scam In Nigeria by ArewaNorth: 4:29pm On Aug 29, 2022
selmansee:
I have become skeptical about Engineering in Nigeria

Ever since I was in secondary school, All my teachers who taught me science and mathematics are grduates of engineering, my futher math, physics, Agric ,math and chemistry teachers all had degrees ( B.Sc./B.Eng.) in Engineering. Some studied Agric engineering, civil I can still remember one who studied electrical. From FUNAAB

This got me thinking why do they end up like this, Are there no job market for graduate engineers anymore.
Mind you, I live in a highly industrialized area, where I stay, PZ Cussons, African Steel, Kimberly Clack, Dangote Flour, GB foods e.t.c all have their major facotories here..trust me there are many more but these are the highly ranked onced whom I believe many of you might be familiar with.

But when I interact with many of their engineers who work in these factories and live close to my house, I have never see any one of them who are graduates..not a single one..but they work as in engineers in these huge factories especially PZ cussons, African steel and GB foods.. they are not educated
The educated engineers with degrees, I mostly see them in private schools like mine and they earned nothing more than 28,000. They may be be extra from home teaching and the likes

While I was in SS 1, My geography teacher although didn’t study engineering but material science from FUTO (one of my dream school) and he was my teacher in his early 30s earning less than 30k..
The man who tutored me for my WAEC studied Mech.eng from UNIBEN. another tutor whom I wasn’t so close to but I got to know from colleagues that he also studied Mech.eng from Yabatech.
I know a friend whose father is a university dropout but works in Promasidor at Oshodi, they make Cowbell milk and Onga (I think).. and the father is an engineer there..I am confused, How?

I have passion for engineering but I don’t want to foolishly think that my case might be different.
Nairalanders who know a thing or two about the realities engineering in Nigeria
Please, what extra things do engineering students need to learn to ensure after graduation they are able to practice in their field or work in major manufacturing firms like I aspire.

I want to study Mechanical engineering or elect elect. I am still confused..Please I’ll really appreciate if y’all can help
It is obvious that there are no available jobs to accommodate large number of Engineers in Nigeria but still Engineers are among the Nigerians with high paying jobs. Most places job seekers are dreaming in Nigeria are Engineering based organisations both public and private sectors.
Engineers aren't trained to necessarily work for Govt or Industries, they can depend on themselves with the relevant skills they acquired in school and during Industrial Trainings.
I read Engineering and I work with a salary that average Nigerians are dreaming to go close to!

Albert Einstein was not famous for his intelligent quotient, it was his unimaginable inventions and contributions to the world of modern science that made him what we know him to be today! you might have a higher IQ than Einstein but yet not known, but can have a lower IQ yet have an incredible solutions to issues of life!
Einstein wasn't inventor but rather worked on many theories performed before him. The well know practical carried out by Albert was "Chasing a Beam of Light" all his other researchers were theories!

Nigerian Firefighters are not swift to action in cases like this....
Is it their fault? They can only work with the equipment given to them, only jet and chopper can be used to change this narration.

Eriokanmi:
Please Nigerians, does anyone know the reason behind the perceived silence and disappearance on the part of Mr Lai Mohammed, Garba Sehu and Femi Adesina from the media? Have they exhausted their lies or tired of defending the obvious failure of the APC? Is their guilty conscience telling at work?

Kindly share your thoughts cos it's been long since I heard from them last. Hardly would a week pass without seeing them on the TV defending the apc government between 2015 and 2019. What has changed my people?
No, it is because they learnt that Buhari is Jubril Al Sudani that is why they're silent in shock undecided
