PoliticsGagi: Inside A Diverse Community In Sokoto by ArewaNorth(op): 4:39pm On Aug 13, 2022
Gagi is a multicultural community in Sokoto South Local Government Area. Igbo, Ijaw, Hausa, Berom, Itsekiri, Yoruba, Kaje, Gbagyi and many more populate this area. These groups are present in other parts of the state, but have higher numbers in Gagi. A friendly mixed population has evolved in the community, which is home to many places of worship.

Sani Umar Jappi is the Sarkin Yakin Gagi and district head of Gagi. He is the ‘King of War’ in the community, or leader of warriors. Jappi hails from a long line of warriors, which have always defended Sokoto, a role they have faithfully played over the years. Gagi itself is over 200 years old and lies east of the state capital.

Sarkin Yakin Gagi drew attention to his lineage. “Yerima Sambo was the first Sarkin Yaki. He killed Tambari Hurja from Niger Republic, a bandit who attacked many communities. Since that time, the Sultan appointed us the second Sarkin Yaki under the caliphate because of the success achieved during the battle with Tambari Hurja. My father, grandfather and great grandfather, all bore the title of Sarkin Yaki. I am the 11th Sarkin Yaki. There were five or six Yerimas on the throne before they were upgraded to become Sarkin Yaki.”

Today, Sarkin Yaki is a warrior of a different mould. Although he may not carry a sword and shield or ride a horse to go after enemies of the Caliphate, as his forebears did, say 150 years ago, he is engaged in a war against hate, ignorance, poverty, neglect, injustice and exclusion in his community. His shield and sword are not physical tools but mental and ideological.

Toby Ghaghara, the leader of the Igbo community or Sarkin Igbo in Gagi said, “Sarkin Gagi doesn’t discriminate. His exposure has contributed a lot. As you rightly said, churches and mosques share the same fence and everybody knows their boundary. You don’t just cross it anyhow. When there is any development, they come to me, we settle things amicably. There will be no going to court or police. People are buying land and developing.” is on a mission. He wants to see women and girls receive education. He wishes to end poverty, as well as begging, and to spread love among a diverse social and cultural group. A cosmopolitan, multicultural and multi religious community has, therefore, arisen in Gagi.

Sarkin Yaki opened up on the high concentration of places of worship in Gagi. “You cannot count the number of churches in the area. And they have the right to own the churches and serve the Lord, based on their religion and scriptures. Close to the month of Ramadan, you will see youths organised in the community, coming together to celebrate the breaking of fast. And you will see pastors, Christian youths, women groups, Muslim groups coming together to break the fast. We have sustained this over the years.”

“It is a very peaceful experience. We live in harmony. Today, I can go to the palace of Sarkin Yakin Gagi and will be welcomed. When it comes to interfaith dialogue, Gagi is a good example. Gagi should be a good example to other communities in Nigeria. There is nothing more than tolerance. We understand our differences. This tolerance is one of the guiding principles in this community and is the background to communal living here,” The Rev (Fr) Nuhu Bala, a priest in the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto said in an interview with Daily Trust Saturday.

Nasiru Alhaji, an author and historian also said, “Sarkin Yakin Gagi is a very hospitable, kind and patient person. He receives people with open arms. The number of churches in Gagi confirms this to you. They are given red carpet treatment, that’s why they come to Gagi.”

“Gagi people, starting from their Sarki, are very accommodating. You accommodate people when your mind is free. If your mind is not free, it will be very difficult for you to accommodate people. They don’t harass non-indigenes. That’s why Gagi is peculiar. If you go to other parts of Sokoto, it may not be like that,” S.O Rabiu, a professor of Arabic Studies at the Usman Dan Fodio University said.

Paschal Ofokansi (Passmark) is one of the major players in the pharmaceutical trade in Sokoto. He arrived in the city in 1986 and patiently built his establishment over time. He can be given more than a pass mark on account of his love for his adopted city, as well as his patience and determination.

He said, “I came to Sokoto serving somebody. That was in 1986. By 1990 he settled me to start my own business. The story of ‘passmark’ started in 1990. I lived in the community from 1990 till 1995. My eastern brothers are on top of the game. Gagi is a model. How I wish other sections of Nigeria would emulate the Gagi model. It gives liberty to anybody no matter where you come from.”

Abdulfatai Coker, the Sarkin Yorubawa or leader of the Yoruba community in Sokoto also said, “I think Gagi is one of the best things around. You are bound to be in love with such persons.

“I represent the Yoruba headship in Sokoto State generally. I am the fourth Sarkin Yoruba. We have a history of more than 200 years here.

“I was born here and started going to the Sultan’s palace at the age of five. My father was a very good friend to Sultan Abubakar III. That paved the way for us. When coming from Sokoto he would stop at our house in Mayanci, Zamfara State. That was in the 1940s, where the Sultan would be visiting the home of non-indigenes. When I was a child, the Sultan, in the course of his visits, would draw me close to sit on his thigh.”

Northern minorities are also present in Gagi. Ishaya Bagai, Sarkin Southern Kaduna told Daily Trust Saturday that, “Sokoto is peaceful. This is our story here. When you go to other parts of the state, people are saying the same thing. The Sultan is always with us, we are always at the palace.

“In the photograph there you will see the Sultan offering me something to drink. That is the height of tolerance, humility and respect, where an ordinary Southern Kaduna chief is offered a drink by the Sultan. He is a father indeed.

“There is peaceful coexistence with the people of Sokoto. Seventy per cent of the churches are found in Gagi. If he was not good, such things would not take place.”

A drive through Gagi revealed that there are many hotels and businesses in this part of Sokoto, and they are owned by Igbo businessmen.

Igbo landlords are in their hundreds, many constructions are ongoing, and there are clear signs of huge investments in the locality. Gagi is a popular destination for many. This is also as a result of the various security formations located within or around it.

Coker also said, “Gagi is a peculiar place. The hospitality of the people of Gagi is wonderful and commendable, with a higher concentration of all good things. The hospitality industry in Sokoto is concentrated there. Most churches and hotels are in Gagi. Yoruba mosques are in Gagi.

“Gagi it gives you an attractive welcome. I know that Sarkin Gagi is very young and he is building on the legacy people before him left. He is doing it well and it is commendable.”

Sunday Nwafor, who hails from the South East, lives in Gagi. A few years ago he turned to the kilishi trade and has become a big player in the business. He employs many young Hausa boys who help with the production of the northern delicacy.

Mr Nwafor has brought in new production techniques, such as the use of a microwave, said Lilian Eze, the manager of Osinachi Agricultural Products, Sokoto.

A part of Gagi has been named ‘Small Nigeria.’ This is a reference to the huge concentration of diverse groups from different parts of the country who reside there.

“In Salame, we have a mini Nigeria. All tribes have their representatives here. We love one another. If you go to old airport you would think you were in Offa or Enugu. That is why I involve them in my Council. I involve both Muslims and Christians. I have pastors as part of my Council. If you go inside the old airport you cannot count how many churches you find there. We made a survey and saw 50 of them. But now, I am sure there are more,” Gidado Umar, Ubandawakin Salame said.

Muhammadu Lawal Maidoki, the executive secretary, Sokoto State Zakat and Waqf Commission (SOZECOM) also said, “I foresee that Gagi will expand to neighbouring communities of Durbawa and Shuni districts.

“Their leader is one of the charismatic district heads we have. He is carrying his people along with numerous social interventions and social programmes that will assist his community, not only in coming together but in fighting poverty and improving health care delivery.”

An early warning system helps to keep the peace in Gagi. This system connects the various multicultural groups with their hosts in the community, Sarkin Yaki said. The warning system, which incorporates the police, vigilante groups and heads of various communities, has worked effectively on a number of occasions.

The Sarkin Yaki Daily Trust Saturday that he has Yoruba, Igbo and Edo genes in his family, adding that a future Sarkin Yaki is likely to have Igbo blood.

“My uncle is married to a Yoruba. One of the children can succeed me as the king of this community, so how can people like him fight the southern minority? My grandmother was married to a Yoruba man 80 years ago and some of her grandchildren are Christians in Ogun, and some in Lagos, partly Yoruba, Fulani Igbo.

“One of us must protect the interest of Yoruba and Igbo because they are part of the family. One of my brothers, Gidado, is married to Igbo. I don’t have power to insult Yoruba or Igbo because of their presence in my family,” he said.

PoliticsNortherners On Edge Over Ethnic Profiling In South West by ArewaNorth(op): 11:55am On Aug 13, 2022
There is widespread concern among northerners in the South West over the continued harassment of their kinsmen traveling to the region for business as they are often intercepted and profiled by the South West Security Network code-named Amotekun, Daily Trust Saturday reports.

In recent times, hundreds of northerners travelling to the South West have been intercepted on suspicion of being terrorists thereby fuelling the already tense atmosphere in Nigeria.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that for decades, agile men from the North have been travelling to the South West, South East and South South to do menial jobs especially during the dry season and thereafter return to the North during the rainy season to tend to their farms.

However, the sharp rise in insecurity in the North has forced many people to abandon their farmlands, a development that made them moving from one part to the other an all-year-round affair.

But regional security operatives in the South West said the suspicion on northerners was fuelled largely by the atmosphere of insecurity that has spread to the Southern part of the country with many cases of kidnapping for ransom and other forms of attacks being recorded.

There has been tension in the South West recently over alleged invasion of the region by suspected terrorists.

Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, also recently raised the alarm that some terrorists are hiding in forests of Ogun and Osun states.

But in all of these security alerts, northerners have become the victims of the rage and anger by residents and authorities in the region who now see them as agents of evil in their land.

Curiously, the authorities rarely find anything incriminating with the youths who mostly engage in hawking or menial jobs.

In the last one week, the Amotekun Corps, a regional security outfit, intercepted three trucks conveying goods from the North to the South which had some northerners as passengers on board.

On August 2nd, the Amotekun Corps intercepted a truck carrying about 150 northerners travelling from Zamfara State in Ibadan.

It was gathered that the travellers, who were arrested in Bodija Market and detained near the axis, were travelling from Zamfara to Abeokuta and passed through Ogere, in Ogun State.

Some residents around Bodija Market area were said to have alerted Amotekun of their suspicion on sighting the truck loaded with bags of onions, beans, potatoes, motorcycles with northern travellers comprising men, women, youths and children stuffed in between.

The truck was, subsequently, moved to the office of Amotekun at Dandaru in Ibadan, where the travellers were interrogated while items in the truck were offloaded and the truck thoroughly searched.

Upon interrogation at the Amotekun office, driver of the truck, with number plate, Abuja BWR 143 XD, Abdullahi Aliu, said he was conveying the items and travellers to Ogere, Ogun State, and only offloaded some items at Bodija Market.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that Bodija is a major foodstuff market in Ibadan with a large concentration of northern traders just like Ogere and other parts of the South West.

But many northerners always join trucks originating from the region to the South in search of greener pastures. For those travelling regularly on major highways, such trucks with dozens of northerners and their motorcycles hung inside the trucks are common.

And this much was confirmed by the driver of the truck, Aliu, who said he assisted some of them on the journey because they did not have transport fare.

After search and interrogation, security agencies said no incriminating item was found on the travellers and in the truck while the security agencies comprising the police and DSS officers escorted the travellers to the Ogun State border to continue their journey to Ogere, after their destination had been confirmed.

The Zamfara State had issued a statement condemning the arrest but added that it contacted relevant authorities in Ondo and sorted out the matter.

From Oyo to Ondo State, two trucks conveying another set of northerners were also intercepted.

While 151 people sitting on bags of rice were arrested at the Sango area along the Akure-Ado Expressway, another set of 168 were seen on truck around Itaogbolu and Iju communities in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state during a stop and search.

Amotekun Corps in Oyo State later confirmed the release of 170 northerners intercepted at Bodija after completing their profiling.

The state commandant of Amotekun, Col Olayinka Olayanju, said after the arrest, it was discovered that those arrested were normal travellers but his men only arrested them because their movement was suspicious.

He said they were not members of the dreaded Boko Haram as speculated by the people, adding that the state police command would hand them over to the Ogun State police command since they claimed they were going to Ogun State.

“It is true they are not members of Boko Haram. They are normal travellers and we are working with other sister security agencies to release them for Ogun State police command since they claimed they are going to Ogere in Ogun State.”

‘We’re being treated as outcast’

Some of the northerners who spoke with our correspondent said this kind of harassment has become commonplace in the South West.

Umaru Shehu, an indigene of Borno State who rides Okada at Kara along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said many of the northerners usually attach themselves to trucks heading southwards to eke out a living.

He, however, lamented that many of them now face harassment on a daily basis as they are often tagged as terrorists, kidnappers and people with criminal intents.

He said, “Many of our people are coming to Lagos but those entering Lagos have reduced because of the ban on Okada.

“Some of them come through big trucks, some will come with trucks conveying cows and they (security agencies) would just stop them and say they are criminal elements. This is what we have been facing in recent times.

“In Kara here, several of our people are in detention as a result of regular raids conducted by the Police in Ogun and Lagos State. We hope the government can look into this.”

Khalid Ismail, a 22-year-old from Darazo in Bauchi State, said northerners are not being treated fairly.

“I finished secondary school over four years ago but could not continue because my parents don’t have the means to sponsor me that is why I decided to come to the South West to do menial job.

“But it is sad that some people here are looking at us with distain. I don’t think if I would be here (South West) if not for the insecurity bedevilling us in the North. I want to call on our leaders to address the problem so that we can go back home,” he said.

Umar Shehu, who hails from Katsina, said people from the North appear to be more tolerant.

“Hundreds of people from the South West and other religions in the South also troop to the North in search of greener pasture but no one is discriminating against them.

“In fact, we respect them a lot and they are entitled to everything northerners are entitled to. They buy farmlands, houses, build shopping malls, schools and fully settle with their families.

“On our part, we are not that ambitious, we only come here from time to time but yet we are being treated as outcast. Our leaders should speak out,” he said.

We are not happy with profiling of our kinsmen – Sarkin Hausawa

Leaders of Arewa communities in South west told Daily Trust Saturday they are not happy over the recent arrest and profiling of their members who are mostly labourers, commercial bike riders and petty traders in Lagos and other parts of the geopolitical zone.

The Sarkin Hausawa of Shasha Akure in Ondo State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu Abdullahi, told Daily Trust Saturday that he was the one who intervenes whenever Amotekun arrested Northern travellers.

“As I am talking to you now, I am tired of going to bail our people who are arrested by Amotekun, and I decided not to go there again, because even if we told them that these people are not criminals, they are labourers and some petty traders, they would not listen to us, they don’t even want to hear from us, and we are not happy with the way and manner Amotekun is parading our people in front of newsmen, calling them criminals and all sorts of names ranging from intruders and illegal migrants even though they know they are Nigerians.

“As I am talking to you, there are more than 300 northerners with Amotekun. How can they feed them and how can they look after their health considering their numbers?” he asked.

Shehu, however, added that the northern travellers who are coming to the South through trucks loaded with goods or animals are also to be blame as they are not doing the right thing.

“Even if Amotekun is not arresting them, they should have considered their safety as traveling inside trucks loaded with animals or goods is not safe at all. I urge them to stop coming to the South in such a manner. If they want to travel, they should use the proper means. They should have transport fare and use the proper means,” he said.

The Sarkin Hausawa added that there is the need for the intervention of the northern leaders regarding the way and manner Amotekun is arresting the travellers.

Haruna Garba, a native of Kano State who travelled to Lagos in search for better life, told Daily Trust Saturday that whenever the operatives of Amotekun intercepted trucks conveying travellers, they ask for National ID cards, voter’s cards and the occupations of the travellers.

“We don’t have much money that is why you see us joining the trucks which are far cheaper. With N3, 000, a truck will get you to Lagos or any part of the South West instead of paying between N10, 000 and N12, 000.

Some of the truck drivers who spoke to Daily Trust Saturday disclosed that they are helping the travellers by carrying them in their trucks as the majority of them don’t have money to join passenger buses.

One of the drivers named Yusuf called on governors of the South West states to call the Amotekun operatives to order and stop them from indiscriminate arrest.

“The governors should tell their people to stop harassing northerners. Hausa people are not bandits; Muslims are there, Christians are there. To brand northerners as bandits, criminals, kidnappers is wrong,” he said.

We are suspicious of their movement – Afenifere

When contacted, the Publicity Secretary of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, said as much as the constitution of Nigeria provides for freedom of movement, the current security situation makes it imperative to suspect any strange mass movement.

He said those arrested should have used the normal passenger buses if they had nothing to hide.

Jare said, “We know that there is freedom of movement. Every Nigerian has the right to live wherever he desires but the manner in which those people apprehended in Ondo State two times within this week alone and another truck here in Ibadan, were transported, did not portray them as meaning well,” he said.

PoliticsDespite Odds, Train Boosts Economic Activities Along Kano, Nguru Route by ArewaNorth(op): 11:36am On Aug 13, 2022
Despite several odds, the Kano-Nguru train corridor has remained in operation, serving business interests. As a result of the train services, other activities, including social life, have been enhanced at the two train destinations, creating many opportunities and improving the cost of living for residents.

In 1930 when the old model train was introduced during the time of the European missionaries, the locomotive travelled for 300 kilometres between Kano and Nguru, passing through various towns and villages with hundreds of passengers and goods worth millions of naira.

With 12 coaches, the train operates four times a week, twice from Kano (Mondays and Thursdays) and twice from Nguru (Tuesdays and Fridays).

Our correspondent who travelled in the train on Monday last week to get a firsthand experience of its operations and business opportunities on the route, discovered that it usually leaves Kano by 9pm on Monday and arrives Nguru on Tuesday by 6am or 7am, and on Thursday it leaves around 9pm from Kano and arrives at Nguru on Friday within the morning hours.

Although majority of those in Kano know little or nothing about the weekly operations of the train to and from Nguru in Yobe State, it was observed that the locomotive aids business activities, not only between the two states but the entire North West and North East. To some extent, it also makes business relations between Nigeria and Niger Republic easier.

Before the development of modern highways and airports in Nigeria, the railway was the only means of efficient transportation of humans and goods from one point to another. This created the leeway for the modest development witnessed from colonial times and before the early 1970s.

Our findings also revealed that despite improvement in road infrastructure in the country, residents and marketers in the Nguru-Kano axis prefer the train for their daily activities. Among many other reasons, they told our correspondent that the railway was safer and cheaper than road transportation.

During the trip, our correspondent discovered that despite all the odds, the train is highly patronised by businessmen and women. Also, women who are into petty businesses take advantage of the train services as it is cheaper and easier for them to move their goods without obstacles.

A staff member in charge of coaches that carry loads, who asked not to be named, told Daily Trust Saturday that without the patronage of business people, the train would have stopped operation as the money generated from passengers cannot sustain its services.

“You can see that from the arrangement, we prioritise the coaches that carry goods because they are the soul of the business. We have up to eight coaches for goods and only three or four for passengers. If you depend on passengers only you can’t survive. How many are the passengers? And they are mostly women who often come for business or wedding purposes; and they don’t usually pay for their loads,” he said.

He said that whenever the goods were below seven coaches they won’t move the train.

One of the passengers, Hajiya Adama Buhari, who supplies kettles and bowls to Nguru, said she had been patronising the train for over 10 years. She considers going to Kano from Nguru as easy as going from home to the market because of affordability and ease of moving goods.

“Almost every month, I come to Kano for my business. The train has been of great support and advantage to me. I pay less and still put my entire load inside without paying a penny, unlike road transportation where I have to pay for myself and my load,” she said.

A resident of Nguru, Sunusi Tanko, said that over the years, the train had been supporting small and big businessmen and women in the region by making it easier for them to transport their goods, especially farm produce, to Kano.

“Although the train is old, it is still relevant and plays a significant role in helping people, especially women who supply goods to Kano. They can’t afford to pay for motor vehicles,” he said.

It was also learnt that the major attraction for passengers is the fare, which is N650 for a one-way trip. This is against the N2,000 or N2,500 on road transportation for the same trip.

Women with children are also allowed to pay N350 for each of their children. This indirectly includes the money for luggage as many of the passengers carry loads.

Hajiya Adama also said, “I buy a lot of things from Kano to Nguru, depending on what my customers need. And from Nguru, I also supply many things to Kano. Sometimes I have two full sacks, but I only pay for my seat, which is N650. I don’t have to pay for my loads; I will find a place and put them inside the train, unlike motor vehicles where I have to pay for myself and the load, and maybe three to four times the train fare.”

It was also discovered that businessmen who send large goods to and from Kano could pay for a coach at the rate of N75,000. A staff on the train explained that a coach was equivalent to one and half trailers, and can carry over 40 tonnes of load.

According to the staff who spoke with our correspondent, a trailer-load of goods will cost over N200,000 to Nguru, “and it is not up to one coach.”

Major goods supplied from Kano

From Kano, the major goods transported to Nguru are mostly foodstuffs and other commodities. The foodstuffs include macaroni, spaghetti, sugar, noodles, cooking oil and other related products, as well as soft drinks they buy at wholesale prices from the popular Singer Market in Kano.

Other goods include electronic gadgets, furniture, vehicles like tricycles, motorcycles, and animal feeds.

Some of the traders said part of the reasons they preferred the train was how it reduced the risk of goods getting damaged as is the norm with road transportation.

Alhaji Muhammed Madu Bukar, who owns a shopping plaza in Nguru town and often supplies foodstuffs from Kano, said that for over 20 years he had been enjoying the train as a single coach can accommodate all his goods.

“The train is very simple for us here as it convenes all our goods. No matter the number of goods we have, the train will carry it. This is unlike trailers where you may end up leaving some of your goods until the following week because of lack of space. The 8 coaches on the train can carry all our goods. Each coach carries 40 tonnes, which is equivalent to 1.5 trailers.

“It is also cheaper. On a trailer, we pay N60 or N65 for each carton, but on the train, it is N30 or even below. Those of us who have many goods always hire a whole coach; and it is cheaper,” he said.

He said that with the train he would not have to go to Kano every week but would send money to his suppliers, who would put his goods on it and deliver to him, a development he described as more secure and economical.

“I have been using the train for long. At the train station we also have people that will collect the goods and load, as well as look after them until arrival in Nguru.

“Few people among us use motor vehicles to Kano but load their goods on the train and come back to Nguru in motor vehicles. They do this because the train operates at night and is not as fast as motor vehicles. It is the olden days train,” he added.

Another trader, Jibrin Isma’ila, who is into animal feeds in Nguru, said the use the train had saved him a lot and generated more profit for him.

“I have been using the train for my business for long. I am among the major dealers of animal feeds. You know we have an animal market here and many people are into rearing. I buy over 300 sacks of animal feed; that is wheat dust. I pay N100 for each sack because it is big. But if the load is too much, I usually pay for a whole coach.

“The train is really helpful because it is what motivates us to remain in the business. I come to Kano every week, depending on what I think is needed in the market. When there is maize around the Kaduna and Zaria axis, I go there to buy and supply at Nguru, through Kano,” he said.

Our correspondent also observed that the trip from Nguru to Kano is similar to that from Kano to Nguru as the train is also loaded with huge commodities. Most of the goods from Nguru that are supplied in Kano are said to be unique and needed for many purposes. It is said that such goods are the reason many women are into business and dominating the train.

Among the major goods transported to Kano are mostly farm produce that do not grow much in Kano, such as gingerbread palm (goruba), rice dust (buntu), sesame, hibiscus (zobo), sesame leaf (karkashi), kajij (used in making fragrance), baobab leaf (kuka) and potash (kanwa).

Others are empty jerry-cans, drink bottles, animal skin and animals, including cattle, camels, rams, goats and sheep, among many other things.

One of the dealers in gingerbread, sesame, hibiscus and rice dust, Jibrin Ahmad, told Daily Trust Saturday at the train station in Nguru that Kano served as his largest market and the train has been supporting his business.

“I send over 200 sacks of biri (goruba) and some other products to Kano every week. And my customers are always asking for more. In Kano, they are using it for different purposes. Companies are even buying from our people there. We are making huge profit because each sack is N7,500, but we get it at less than N7,000. If not for the train, it would have gone higher because of transport fare.

“I send it directly to Rimi market through the train; I don’t go to Kano. I am running the business from here. I normally work to get the goods here and sometimes from Niger Republic and neighbouring villages. So, the train has been of great advantage to many of our people here. In fact, it is a blessing to the entire Nguru town,” he said.

Also, a cattle dealer, Musa Alhassan, who often sends goods to Wudil, Larabar Abasawa and Jogana markets in Kano, said he had been using the train to transport his cattle from Nguru.

He said that unlike other goods that are moved directly to the last terminus in Kano, cattle were offloaded at the Jogana station, an outskirts of Kano city for easy movement to the markets.

“I am from Kano, but every week I come to Nguru to buy cattle and move to Kano via the train. The train is very cheap and really supports the business. I pay N5,000 for a cow in a trailer, but in the train it is N2,000,” he said.

He also said the train was safer for the animals as they could move freely, unlike the trailers where they would be tied.

Businesses along the routes

Another aspect of the corridor our correspondent discovered is how the train also boosts business activities in the various towns along its route. The 12 stations or terminuses of the train have offered so many opportunities to the villages around them to make brisk businesses, either within or outside the train.

It was gathered that the train normally stops at the 12 stations, either to drop passengers or carry others. At such places, children, especially females, sell various commodities.

Notable stations where such businesses take place most are within the axis of Jigawa State, such as Kugama, Malam Madori and Birniwa local government areas.

Also sharing her experiences, a widow and mother of six, Maimuna Bukar, said she had been transporting kajiji to the popular Rimi market in Kano and would buy earrings while coming back, to supply in Nguru. She said the business had given her the means to take care of herself and the children.

“I was able to marry off one of my daughters with this business, which I have been doing since the demise of my husband,” she said, adding that many women like her are into the business because of the train.

Challenges of the Kano-Nguru rail transportation

Many challenges are associated with the train services. For instance, a journey that is expected to last for three hours sometimes takes more than 10 hours and amidst a crowd of passengers, who are usually pressed on one another due to lack of space. Movement from one coach to another, which a train is known for, is nowhere to be found as one can hardly find a place to stretch one’s legs.

Also, the failure of the operators to adopt e-ticketing has provided the opportunity for the train to accommodate passengers beyond its original capacity. The sale of tickets keep going on until the last person on the ground is accommodated.

Aside the congestion, the noise emanating from the engines of the old train, as well as the cry from children due to excessive heat, makes it almost impossible for one to take a nap during the trip.

Unlike what was obtainable three decades ago as attested to by some people, the train no longer has light, not to talk of any cooling system, a situation that gives room for the invasion of mosquitoes.

“You will enjoy the train, my son. I used it twice even before you were born. That time, it was one person per seat; there was no squatting. And you could move freely from coach to coach to stretch your legs. There was light and fans, so there is nothing to worry about,” our correspondent’s mother had assured before the trip. She did not know that the situation has deteriorated over the years due to lack of care by the authorities.

It was also observed that there was no light at the surrounding of the train station and in the ticket collection room. One had to use one’s phone’s light to pay and rush back to the train to get a seat to avoid standing throughout the journey. There was also the struggle to get a seat near a window because of lack of a cooling system.

Daily Trust Saturday also observed that the norm is to get a seat, place identification tag on it and go outside to wait because staying inside could lead to suffocation. About 8:30pm, the engine of the train arrived from Zaria after undergoing some repairs; that confirmed the readiness of the train to embark on the journey.

While the passengers were waiting, on the other segment, traders were busy with their goods to ensure that they were loaded into the coaches allocated for them. About 10:09pm, the journey started, one hour and nine minutes late, according to the schedule.

The journey was also not without hiccups as the train had to stop at least 15 times to allow the engines cool off as a result of overheating, thereby stretching the journey till 1:45pm on Tuesday when it finally stopped at the Nguru terminal.

An old man who has worked on the train for many years said, “We are just not lucky today, we normally arrive at 6am or 7am. But look at what happened; the train is tired, honestly.”

Why government should improve the system

Many businessmen who spoke with Daily Trust Saturday said the rail system was so important that the government should not think of allowing it to collapse, saying such situation would not be good for both Yobe and Kano states, which are benefitting from the train services. They also said that if the government allowed that it happen, many businesses would collapse.

“We want the government to intervene and find the best solution to the challenges associated with the train and its services. This train is helping the masses. The government should try to bring in modern ones to make it easier for us,” one of the traders in Nguru said.

@Ahmback,

To be brutally honest, it was "kinda justified" because Imperial Japan was proving stubborn even after the Germans had surrendered during WW11. The Japs kept on fighting (and we know that many Nigerian and West African servicemen were on active duty against the Japanese in Burma [now Myanmar]. The Africans in the Colonial Armies fought bravely against the hardened Japanese).

On the other hand, the targets in Hiroshima and Nagasaki had NO MAJOR MILITARY facilities or significance [just like the Allied bombing of civilian targets in Dresden, Germany, popularly called the "fire-bombing of Dresden." Over 100,000 innocent German men, women and children died and were burned and/or partially burned to ashes during the several air-raids on Dresden].

War can be that brutal!
I can't see the difference in mental inferiority between you and the current Japanese people. There has never been stubbornness and cruelty as displayed by Nazi, Germany was so powerful that only the half decade intervention of several ally forces stop them from destroying the world but because the west and Germany are two similar group of people they were never bombed with nukes.
This is extreme of hypocrisy. There is no aorta of justification on the nuke bombing and US should've faced similar treatment in UN Security council as Germany.
Japan was bombed after Germany surrendered, why didn't they do the same as they did to Germany because Japan wasnt as powerful as Germany?

See how the mentally retarded, mentally inferior Japanese PM is derailing from telling world the truth. US and West should have solved the issue of escalating war between Russia and Ukraine by respecting the earlier demand and agreement between them and Russia that NATO should not expand to Eastern Europe, that is all!
Can't the idiot PM clearly see the intimidation of other Nations by US as in the case of Taiwan and Ukraine? Ppl eace is bigger than ego. Democratic Party is a big disaster to the world!

PoliticsNot Even My Corpse Will Be Found In PDP – El-rufai Replies Bwala by ArewaNorth(op): 7:41pm On Aug 08, 2022
Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that not even his corpse will be found in the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

El-Rufai stated this while responding to a comment by Daniel Bwala, spokesperson to PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Bwala, who was an aide of the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, last month dumped the position and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s choice of a fellow Muslim, former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima as running mate.

El-Rufai had via his verified Twitter handle shared and laughed at one of Bwala’s TV appearances where he lambasted the PDP.

Consequently, Bwala on Monday via his verified Twitter handle stated: “Hmm @elrufai is one of the finest we have from the north, I will never join issues with him, especially because I am optimistic he will be with us before the 2023 elections.”

A few hours later, El-Rufai in his response wrote ” Thanks @BwalaDaniel but no, thanks. Never ever, not even my corpse will be found in the vicinities of your new-found political party. I still dey laugh!!! – @elrufai.”

Zulum is loved not because of infrastructure in his state only but because of his emphathy, humility and clear effort in resettling the war ravaged people of Borno state through poverty alleviation programs and uncommon commitment to his subjects. Poverty will keep biting Borno people in the next two decades because of this war. Most people there lost their home and business completely and will start from scratch.

PoliticsNDLEA Arrests Pastor With 3 Drums Of ‘meth’ Imported From India by ArewaNorth(op): 3:45pm On Aug 07, 2022
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a trans-border drug dealer, Pastor Anietie Okon Effiong, with three drums of crystal methamphetamine, locally called meth, believed to have been imported from India.

The consignment weighing 90kgs and loaded into a commercial bus with registration number RSH 691XC at Ojuelegba in Lagos was intercepted during a stop and search operation along Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene highway on Saturday.

Spokesman for the agency, Femi Babafemi, said the dangerous drug packed 30kg in each drum was meant for Pastor Effiong, who was arrested in a follow up operation at Oron beach in Oron.

The recovered Meth drums were meant for onward delivery to the Republic of Cameroon.

“This comes on the heels of four seizures of the same illicit substance weighing 4.074kg going to Australia, Indonesia and Philippines with a 3kg cannabis sativa heading to Dubai, United Arab Emirates at some courier companies in Lagos. The consignments were concealed in body cream, hot burner iron and beads,” Babafemi said.

Meanwhile, in Sokoto, a 90-year-old retired soldier, Usman Adamu, was arrested on Wednesday in Mailalle, Sabon Birni LGA for supplying bandits illicit drugs.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was caught with 5.1kg cannabis sativa.

Also, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, a 37-year-old indigene of Ovia LGA, Edo State and resident in Italy; Solo Osamede, was arrested for ingesting 41 wraps of heroin.

He was nabbed and taken into custody for excretion while attempting to board a Turkish Airline flight to Milan, Italy via Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday 30th July.

The swallowed wraps of the illicit drug were recovered in four excretions, which the suspect completed on Monday 1st August.

In the same vein, a female passenger Jatau Lydia Lami, was arrested at the Lagos airport for attempting to export 1,700 tablets of Tramadol 225mg concealed in her luggage to Istanbul, Turkey via a Turkish Airline flight on Sunday 31st July.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, a mother of three, hails from Zango Kataf LGA, Kaduna State and lives in Istanbul, Turkey with her family.

She blamed her action on pressure to raise N5m ransom to free her mother from the captivity of bandits who kidnapped her since June.

At the SAHCO export shed of the airport, attempts by some freight agents to export two consignments of cannabis in a consolidated cargo to Dubai, UAE on Thursday 4th August were thwarted by NDLEA operatives who also arrested two of them in follow up operations.
Those arrested are Oladipupo Oladapo Fatai and Animashaun Qudus, while two others are still at large.

In Zamfara State, NDLEA operatives on Thursday 4th August intercepted a truck from Benin, Edo State enroute Sokoto State with 50,000 tablets of Diazepam owned by a drug dealer, Umaru Attahiru, while in Kogi, 14 sacks containing 1,376 bottles of codeine based syrup weighing 190.4kg were seized along Okene-Abuja highway on Wednesday 3rd August.

The exhibits were found in a delivery bus coming from Onitsha, Anambra State and heading to Abuja.

Follow up operation in Abuja same day led to the arrest of Jude Ikenna and Ozoemene Cornelius.

In Kaduna State, four suspects: Sulaiman Rabi’u; Sanusi Sha’aibu; Ma’aruf Habibu and Christian Nnachor, were arrested in Zaria, Tafa and Romi Kaduna with 106, 770 tablets of Tramadol 225mg, Diazepam, Exol-5 and 100 bottles of codeine cough syrup.

In Enugu State, 143.5kgs cannabis sativa was recovered from locked up stores in new market area of the state capital on Saturday 6th August, while in Delta State, a suspect, Ike Okparachi, 42, was arrested at Abraka Junction, Asaba with 10,550 tablets of Tramadol 225mg; Swinol; Rohypnol; and 3,105 bottles of codeine syrup as well as 69grams of Molly.
