Health › Coronavirus: Scientists Brand 5G Claims 'complete Rubbish' by Atigba(op): 7:20pm On Apr 05, 2020 |
Conspiracy theories claiming 5G technology helps transmit coronavirus have been condemned by the scientific community. Videos have been shared on social media showing mobile phone masts on fire in Birmingham and Merseyside - along with the claims. The posts have been shared on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram - including by verified accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. But scientists say the idea of a connection between Covid-19 and 5G is "complete rubbish" and biologically impossible. The conspiracy theories have been branded "the worst kind of fake news" by NHS England Medical Director Stephen Powis. Conspiracy theory Many of those sharing the post are pushing a conspiracy theory falsely claiming that 5G - which is used in mobile phone networks and relies on signals carried by radio waves - is somehow responsible for coronavirus. These theories appear to have first emerged via Facebook posts in late January, around the same time the first cases were recorded in the US. They appear to fall broadly in to two camps: One claims 5G can suppress the immune system, thus making people more susceptible to catching the virus. The other suggests the virus can somehow be transmitted through the use of 5G technology. Both these notions are "complete rubbish," says Dr Simon Clarke, associate professor in cellular microbiology at the University of Reading. "The idea that 5G lowers your immune system doesn't stand up to scrutiny," Dr Clarke says. "Your immune system can be dipped by all sorts of thing - by being tired one day, or not having a good diet. Those fluctuations aren't huge but can make you more susceptible to catching viruses." While very strong radio waves can cause heating, 5G is nowhere near strong enough to heat people up enough to have any meaningful effect. "Radio waves can disrupt your physiology as they heat you up, meaning your immune system can't function. But [the energy levels from] 5G radio waves are tiny and they are nowhere near strong enough to affect the immune system. There have been lots of studies on this." The radio waves involved in 5G and other mobile phone technology sit on the low frequency end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Less powerful than visible light, they are not strong enough to damage cells - unlike radiation at the higher frequency end of the spectrum which includes the sun's rays and medical x-rays. It would also be impossible for 5G to transmit the virus, Adam Finn, professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol, adds. "The present epidemic is caused by a virus that is passed from one infected person to another. We know this is true. We even have the virus growing in our lab, obtained from a person with the illness. Viruses and electromagnetic waves that make mobile phones and internet connections work are different things. As different as chalk and cheese," he says. It's also important to note another major flaw with the conspiracy theories - coronavirus is spreading in UK cities where 5G has yet to be deployed, and in countries like Iran that have yet to roll out the technology. There were plenty of scare stories about 5G circulating before the coronavirus outbreak which Reality Check has already looked into, such as this piece: Does 5G pose health risks? Earlier this year, a long-running study from the watchdog the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) rebutted these claims, saying there was no evidence that mobile networks cause cancer or other illnesses. But if anything, the misinformation seems to have escalated. Trade body Mobile UK has said false rumours and theories linking 5G and coronavirus were "concerning," while the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has reiterated there is "absolutely no credible evidence for the link". Viruses invade human or animal cells and use them to reproduce, which is what causes infection. Viruses cannot live very long outside a living thing, so they have to find a way in - usually via droplets of liquid from coughs or sneezes. Genome sequencing of this coronavirus suggests it jumped from animals to humans - and then began to pass from human to human. https://www.bbc.com/news/52168096

Health › Re: FACT-CHECK: Is Coronavirus Caused By 5G Technology? by Atigba: 10:00pm On Apr 04, 2020 |
aminulive: Nigerians on Saturday woke up to viral information being spread about the 5G technology and its connection to the novel coronavirus(COVID-19).
In fact, it generated controversies amongst social media users until the point when '5G' was listed amongst the top trending keywords on Twitter. Although similar speculations had sprung up a few days ago, a prominent fact-checking platform, AFP, found the claims to be unfounded.
"Numerous conspiracy theories shared on and off social media claim that 5G mobile networks are the cause of the novel coronavirus pandemic. This is false; experts told AFP that 5G is based on radio frequency and that this does not create viruses." AFP wrote.
However, the same claims gained more momentum and generated more furore when former Aviation minister, Fani Kayode and Senator Dino Melaye, tweeted about it. A lot of Nigerians are now calling for a boycott of the technology since the coronavirus and 5G conspiracy theory emerged.
POLITICS NIGERIA, in its support for accountability media, finds it expedient to fact check their claims.
CLAIMS: "If people knew what was unfolding & what satan & his Illuminati agents, his disciples like @elonmusk & @BillGates & the proponents of the New World Order have in mind & are doing with 5G, coronavirus &the coming Anti-coronavirus vaccines, every Christian & Muslim would join forces & PRAY!" Mr Fani-Kayode posted on Twitter.
The tweet which was posted around 00:01 am on Friday garnered over 800 retweets and 3,000 likes.
In subsequent posts on Saturday, he cautioned that Nigerians should protest against the introduction of 5G to Nigeria. In the same light, Mr Melaye, who claimed to have been doing research on the Conspiracy theory, advised that the Federal government should demobilise all 5G networks in Nigeria.
"Whether it is true or not that they are already laying cables of 5G in Nigeria or not. Govt must not allow it in Nigeria and should take a proactive step in that regard. 4G that is here in Nigeria sef na problem. 3G dey do everything I need I beg... We must watch out," He posted on Twitter.
Mr Melaye's tweet, as at 6:12 pm on Saturday, has 1312 retweets and 6706 likes.
VERIFICATION: As at the time of putting up this publication, the duo are yet to share the sources of their information.
What is 5G technology?
According to PC Mag, an international magazine, 5G stands for fifth-generation cellular wireless, and the initial standards for it were set at the end of 2017.
It is an upgrade from 4G LTE which uses 'massive' MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antennas that have very large numbers of antenna elements or connections to send and receive more data simultaneously. It is not transmitted via CABLES.
The benefit to users is that more people can simultaneously connect to the network and maintain high outputs.
While 3G networks had a typical response time of 100 milliseconds, 4G is around 30 milliseconds and 5G will be as low as 1 millisecond. That is how fast it can go, emfexplained.info, a website that provides information about electromagnetic fields, noted.
Health Concerns
The Public Health England says while it is possible that there may be a small increase in overall exposure to radio waves when 5G is added to an existing network or in a new area, “the overall exposure is expected to remain low relative to guidelines and, as such, there should be no consequences for public health.”
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/5g-technologies-radio-waves-and-health/5g-technologies-radio-waves-and-health
Also, the World Health Organisation, WHO, in 2005, raised concerns about the unprecedented increase in the number and diversity of electromagnetic field (EMF) sources.
https://www.who.int/peh-emf/publications/facts/fs296/en/
According to WHO, these sources include video display units (VDUs) associated with computers, mobile phones and their base stations.
"While these devices have made our life richer, safer and easier, they have been accompanied by concerns about possible health risks due to their EMF emissions."
The WHO added that exposure to EMF sources can cause Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).EHS symptoms most commonly experienced include dermatological symptoms (redness, tingling, and burning sensations) as well as neurasthenic and vegetative symptoms (fatigue, tiredness, concentration difficulties, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitation, and digestive disturbances).
"The collection of symptoms is not part of any recognized Syndrome," the global health body noted.
On the other hand, Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The most recently discovered coronavirus is the deadly COVID-19, which is currently ravaging the world. https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses.
There are no links between radiation and viruses against the insinuations of the two politicians. A Popular Fact-checking organization based in the UK, Full Fact has explored these claims concluding that there is no known evidence or proof that 5G can cause or is accelerating the spread of COVID-19.
There is no scientific evidence that links the coronavirus pandemic to 5G, nor any immediate negative health effects to 5G.
5G network not yet in Nigeria - FG
The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, on Saturday, has denied the deployment of 5G network. The minister said the decision was borne out of the government's efforts to protect the lives of Nigerians. He said the National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), is yet to deliberate on the deployment of the network and that no license has been issued for the deployment of 5G in the country.
"A 3-month study trial commenced on the 25th of November, 2019 in order to critically review and study the health and security implications of deploying 5G in Nigeria;"
"As part of the study trial process, I directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that a team of experts, security agencies and other stakeholders fully participated in the trial process."
"The trial process has been concluded and the study and reporting process is currently ongoing, " the statement read in parts.
CONCLUSION: CLAIMS that CORONAVIRUS is caused by 5G NETWORK and that the technology has been fully deployed in Nigeria are FALSE.

Politics › Re: Russian Trolls Meddling In 2020 US Elections Take Cover In Nigeria - CNN by Atigba: 7:27pm On Mar 13, 2020 |
fergie001: Russian election meddling is back -- via Ghana and Nigeria -- and in your feeds
Some agents linked to Russia who are interfering in the upcoming United States elections are reportedly operating from Nigeria.
According to CNN, the trolls traced to Nigeria as well as Ghana were outsourced from Russia, using online campaigns to “poison the political atmosphere” ahead of the next round of elections in America.
The broadcaster said its months-long investigation revealed the agents involved are mainly focusing on racial issues in the US, disguising as promoting black empowerment in the country.
It said unlike in 2016 when the meddling was coordinated from Russia, much of the interference this time are done through groups with strong social media presence disguised as campaigners and activists.
“The goal, according to experts who follow Russian disinformation campaigns, is to inflame divisions among Americans and provoke social unrest,” CNN reported.
The report said some of the operations are carried out on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and coordinated by a group known as Eliminating Barriers to the Liberation of Africa (EBLA) through its Ghana and Nigeria offices.
It said while the running EBLA calls himself Amara and claims to be South African, “in reality, he is a Ghanaian who lives in Russia and his name is Seth Wiredu”.
“Late last year, Wiredu extended EBLA’s activities to Nigeria, filling at least eight positions, including a project manager to help with “social media management”,” the report read.
CNN said it uncovered the postings for two of the jobs, and “a source in Nigeria confirmed that the employees shared office space in Lagos”.
”The Nigerian accounts posted predominantly on US issues too,” it further said, quoted Darren Linvill, a Clemson University professor, as saying the campaign was “straight out of the Russian playbook, trying to mask its efforts among groups in the US”.
“They were very closely engaged in the Black Lives Matter community,” Linvill reportedly said.
“They talked almost exclusively about what was happening on the streets of the United States and not on the streets of Africa.”
CNN said Facebook and Twitter were already investigating some of the troll accounts when it notified the two companies of its investigation.
Facebook said in a statement it removed 49 accounts, 69 pages and 85 Instagram accounts for engaging in foreign interference— which is coordinated inauthentic behaviour on behalf of a foreign actor.
“This network was in the early stages of building an audience and was operated by local nationals — some wittingly and some unwittingly — in Ghana and Nigeria on behalf of individuals in Russia,” the organisation said.
”The people behind this network engaged in a number of deceptive tactics, including the use of fake accounts — some of which had already been disabled by our automated systems — to manage Pages posing as non-government organizations or personal blogs, and post in Groups.”
In a separate statement, Twitter said it has removed 71 accounts that had 68,000 followers, and were “operating out of Ghana and Nigeria and which we can reliably associate with Russia”.
