Travel / 20 Things To Know About The Calabar Sea Port (A Must Read) by AutoJoshNIG: 2:11pm On Sep 13, 2019

1. The Calabar Port is located in the estuaries of the Calabar, Cross River State in the South-Southern region of Nigeria.

2. Calabar Port, together with the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Onne, are the gateway for sea trade in the South-Southern, South-Eastern part of Nigeria.

3. In December 1969, the Federal Government took over the port from previous private operators who were mostly shipping companies. The government handed the management of the port to the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

4. The development, modernization, and expansion of the Calabar port were embarked upon under the 3rd National Development Plan of 1975–1980. This was done in order to upgrade the port facility to cope with the ever-increasing demand of the Nigerian economy.

5. On the 9th of June, 1979, the new Calabar Port complex was commissioned. It lies 45 nautical miles (about84km) upstream from Fairway Buoy.

6. The port currently is made up of the Old Port, New Port, Dockyard and rights to some Crude Oil Terminals at Antan, Odudu, Yoho, QuaIboe; and other jetties at NIWA, McIver, NNPC, ALSCON, Dozzy, Northwest.

7. The three Terminals of Calabar Port are operated by the Terminal Operators; namely: Ecomarine Terminal Ltd, INTELS Nigeria Ltd, and Shoreline Logistics Nigeria Limited.

8. The Calabar Port is the nearest port to 16 northern states (especially in the North-Eastern region) in Nigeria. However, most of these states are being serviced by the port of Douala in Cameroun.

9. The port was also designed to serve as quick access and strategic hub to the neighbouring countries like Chad, Niger and Cameroon. The landlocked Niger Republic is closer to Calabar than Cotonou. Yet, the ports in Cotonou is currently being used by Niger as an import/export hub.

10. The Calabar Port has a siltation rate of over 30 percent. The draught is 5.4 metres on low water and 6.4 metres on high water. All these have reportedly made it extremely difficult for large vessels to call at the port.

11. The port is estimated to be currently generating about N12 billion yearly into the Federal Government coffers. In 2018, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS ) generated N404billion as revenue from the Apapa port in the year 2018.

12. With proximity to 16 northern states, some eastern markets, and the landlocked country of Niger Republic, Calabar Port is strategically located to serve as a hub for the landlocked country of Niger and earn significant revenue for the government.

13. Several attempts to open up the Port through dredging of its 84 nautical miles channel have consistently hit a brick wall.

14. The first contract for the dredging of the Calabar Port Channel was awarded in 1996 during the administration of late General Sani Abacha. The contract was awarded to a little known Chinese company that showed up for a while and simply vanished.

15. In 2006, the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo awarded the contract again to two Dutch companies at a cost of $56million. Both companies left the contract without completing their assignment.

16. On November 17, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan awarded another contract to complete the project. The completion contracted was award for N20billion. The contract, which was signed by the NPA, the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) and the Calabar Channel Management, was for the port to be dredged up to 9.8 metres, but it also hit the brick wall.

17. The Managing Director of NPA, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, advised maritime business operators at the Calabar port to adopt flat bottom vessels due to the low draft of the channel. However, maritime expert says flat bottom vessels have tonnage limitations and do not meet the economies of scale of volumes in modern-day shipping.

18. On October, 2018, the Managing director of NPA, Hadiza Bala-Usman, announced that the revenue generated at the Calabar port would determine whether the federal government would spend a whopping N50billion on the Calabar port dredging.

19. In Nov 12, 2018, the Federal Government arrested the Senator Hope Uzodinma, a senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, and a governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, for the failure of his company to execute a contract of $12 million for the dredging of Calabar channel.

20. When fully functional, it is expected that the Calabar Port would increase the volume of vessel traffic and cargo throughput in the port, decongest Lagos ports and reduce the cost of doing business for South-South, South-East based businessmen who spend additional transport cost to take delivery of their consignments in Lagos and Onne ports.

Politics / Gbemi Saraki To Oversee Maritime Sector, Amaechi To Oversee Railway Sector by AutoJoshNIG: 7:16pm On Sep 12, 2019
Gbemisola Saraki will supervise activities in the Nigerian Maritime Sector in her capacity as the Minister of State Transportation, while the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi will focus on the railway sector.

This was announced in a statement released earlier today by the Ministry of Transport.

According to Amechi, “In my first term as Minister, I completely abandoned the maritime sector to the Heads of agencies. “This time around that would not be happening again as I have instructed that the Minister of Transportation for State should personally supervise the maritime agencies, while I just oversee what is happening.

“There are two things that I have discussed with President Muhammadu Buhari that I will be focusing on in this second term as a Minister and they are maritime security and the Single Window project.

“I have assured the government that by the end of 2020, we should have the Single Window at our maritime sector.”

President Muhammadu Buhari directed the establishment of the single window platform that would integrate all government agencies at all the entry points into the country to promote trade and boost security.

The statement was issued today in Abuja by the media aide to the Minister of Transport, Israel Ibeleme after the 3rd Maritime Stakeholders Interactive Forum held in Lagos.

Nairaland / General / Fire Hydrant: What Is This Device Found By The Road Side Used For? (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG: 6:11pm On Sep 11, 2019

These devices are typically found by the roadside or on the pavement. Have you ever wondered what they are used for?

Well, this device is known as the fire hydrant.  They are designed to instantly provide the water required by firefighters to extinguish a fire.

They are constructed and placed by the roadside or inside or outside a building, parking area, industrial area, etc. They are placed in these places so that fire-fighters can plug their hose to them in order to get water supply in the event of a fire outbreak.

The fire hydrant is necessary because fire trucks tank can run out of water in their tanks, or they might not have enough water in their tanks to extinguish a fire. So when they run out of water, they can plug their hose to a hydrant and continue fighting the fire.

Firefighters usually have to use a special pentagonal wrench to remove the valve covers on a fire hydrant. Once the covers are removed, firefighters can attach hoses to the valves. They then open a valve that allows water to flow through the hydrant into the hoses.

So where does the water come from? Most of the time, the water comes from a public or private water source in the neighbourhood. For instance, the water from a fire hydrant by roadsides in Lagos is supplied by the Lagos State Water Corporation.

In most part of the world, it is an offence to park by a fire-hydrant. Because, in case of emergency, a car parked by a hydrant might hinder its use by a fire-fighting team.

Does that law exist in our traffic laws in Nigeria?

Travel / Is The Lagos BRT Lane Underutilized? (see PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG: 3:22pm On Sep 11, 2019

The dedicated BRT lane was designed for the use of buses operating the BRT service.

The dedicated lane was structured into the BRT system to enable speedy transportation of commuters to their destinations. By law, non-BRT vehicles are strictly prohibited from using the lane.

For the implementation of the Lagos BRT project, some roads and expressways were partitioned for use by approved BRT buses.

The partitioning of the roads was met with outrage from some quarters. The reason for the outrage is that Lagos does not have wide enough roads and expressways to warrant the partitioning.

With the exploding human and vehicular population in the state, there is an agitation for the expansion of existing roads – and the construction of new ones. This is has become an urgent concern given the horrific transport traffic gridlock in the state, a situation that the inadequate roads contribute to.

12 years after the commencement of the Lagos BRT project, the demand for mass transit vehicle is still quite high. The situation, as noticed on major BRT bus-stops with stranded commuters, clearly shows that a whole lot more buses need to ply the dedicated BRT lane.

Recall that on May 17, 2016, former governor Akinwunmi Ambode donated 50 brand new BRT buses to the private sole operator of the BRT buses – Primero Transport Services Ltd – to help in satisfying the huge demand. Still, that effort has done little to satisfy the demand for BRT buses in Lagos state.

In 2016, the Ambode-led government of Lagos state abruptly banned the operation of the LAGBUS-supervised buses including those under its franchise scheme.

As of 2016, the number of BRT franchisees had increased to about 37.

With the insufficient BRT buses plying the dedicated BRT lanes, should the Government or the sole operator of the Lagos BRT re-introduce the BRT franchise programme to increase the number of BRT buses in the state?

The Corvette, the iconic sports car makes a return with a bang and it is ready to shake it up. The Stingray is expected to feature the traditional high performance and craftsmanship know throughout the history of the Corvette.

An 8speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmision) is the only gearbox available. It features lightning-quick shifts, combining the smoothness of an automatic with the action of a manual. And since there’s no deceleration between shifts, lap times will improve.

The interior of the Convette is a complete overhaul from the previous model. This powerful machine is equipped with a serious command centre. From the latest Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system† with the 8-inch diagonal color touch-screen to the ingenious available Front Lift, every feature was included to improve your drive. Thanks to sophisticated suspension geometry, tailored tire technology and exquisite attention to structural details. No Corvette has ever felt so comfortable, nimble and yet completely stable.

The new Stingray features coil over dampers that create entirely new ride and handling characteristics. The mid-engine architecture allows for a short, straight and stiff steering system, coupled with an updated electronic steering system, making the driver’s chassis input instantaneous. The new seating position places the car’s center of gravity close to the driver’s inside hip, so the car literally turns around the driver. It completely changes the perception of vehicle handling and responsiveness.

A true American muscle is reborn and the Corvette will raise the flag high with its head-on approach and will give buyers what they want.

Its heritage is not lost because all Corvette carry it over from one generation to the next. Other engine options and models will be available in due time.

One of the benchmarks of the new Chevrolet Corvette C8 is its affordability – that is when compared to similar supercars. A buyer of the Corvette C8 will pay significantly less for the base model 1LT. Price starts from $60, 000, or approximately ₦22m before duty.

Travel / Box Junction: What Is The Meaning Of This Road Marking? (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG: 5:13pm On Sep 10, 2019

If you drive in Lagos or some other metropolis, there is this particular roads markings and signs that you must have come across.

The road marking is a yellow box filled with a yellow grid of criss-cross lines painted on the road. In Lagos, many motorists are unfamiliar with what the marking is all about.

Well, this road marking is called Box Junction.

So what really is a Box Junction?

A Box Junction is a traffic control measure designed to prevent gridlock at junctions. They are usually found at junctions, such as crossroads, T-junctions or occasionally at roundabouts, to keep traffic flowing.

They are usually controlled by traffic lights, but not always.

It is an offense to enter the yellow box unless your exit is clear and there is enough space on the other side of the junction for your car to clear the box completely without stopping. Therefore, you MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.

What if you are turning right at a Box Junction?

Yes. If you want to turn right, you are allowed to enter the box and wait if you are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic, or other vehicles on the box waiting to turn right. However, this can only happen provided your exit road is clear.

But be careful when queuing inside the box because you might not have time to clear the junction before the traffic lights change. Ensure to check that the exit is clear. If you automatically follow the vehicle in front of you, it may stop and prevent you from completely crossing the junction.

Do not ignore the rules of Box Junctions just because a traffic light is green.

Also, do not let other drivers pressure you into entering the box when a clear exit is not available.

There are usually road signs indicating that you are approaching a Box Junction that reads “Offside Rule, Do Not Enter”.

Politics / 10 Ways Lagos State Governments Encourage The Horrific Lagos Traffic Situation by AutoJoshNIG: 12:41pm On Sep 10, 2019

Lagos State is home to over 21 million residents.  Of that massive population, about 95% of the residents commute by road within the state.

With the exploding population and the corresponding increase in vehicles, the roads have become enormously inadequate.

With over 5 million cars and 200,000 commercial vehicles on roads in Lagos (when the national average is 11 vehicles per kilometre), the state, daily, records an average of 227 vehicles per every kilometre of road.

The result of all this is that traffic bottlenecks and gridlocks have become the norm rather than the exception in Lagos.

Recent research showed that an average Lagosian spend an average of 3 months in a year in traffic. Indeed, this does impact negatively on the productivity in the state, and it surely has adverse health implications on residents.

Over the years, successive governments in the state have proposed numerous solutions to the horrendous road traffic challenge. There have also been suggestions for a multi-modal means of transportation to expand mass transit from traditional road transport.  For instance, Waterways transport, cable cars, BRT, metro line, etc means of mass transit have been proposed. However, the successive government in the state seem to only pay lip service to the execution of these proposals.

Perhaps, it is for this reason that some school of thought often suspect that the horrific traffic situation in Lagos is being sustained because some powerful forces -with the connivance of the Government - benefitting massively from it.

Or is it right to believe that successive governments have done little to ameliorate the notorious traffic gridlocks of Lagos state?

Here are 10 ways that the Lagos state government is failing in solving the traffic challenges of the state.

Presence Of "Agberos" On The Roads

Agents of the road transport unions, popularly referred to as “Agberos”, constitute one of the greatest nuisances on roads in Lagos. Their levy-collecting activities on roads in the State often lead to traffic build-ups.

Their mandate requires them to collect levies of diverse nature from commercial motorists in transit. In order to do this, their strategy is to slow vehicular traffic movement in order to succeed in collecting these levies and dues from mobile commercial motorists.

On August 3, 2012, the Fashola administration enacted the Lagos road traffic laws. This law was unambiguous in the outright ban of the activities of the Agberos (NURTW, RTREAN, etc.) both at motor parks and at bus stops. By that law, the mere sight of an agbero on the street or bus stop is a crime against Lagos state.

Curiously, the enforcement of that law by the chest-beating Fashola administration only lasted for 3 days. The law still exists, yet Fashola and his successors have demonstrated an absolute lack of will-power to enforce that law.

Potholes

The internally generated revenue (IGR) of Lagos state, mainly through taxes, is about $1.4 billion annually. This is about 40% of the total IGR collected by Nigeria's 36 states.  It is also far more than what some African nations generate for themselves. This enormous resource does not include the over N120billion it gets annually from the federal government.

With these staggering resources, potholes on roads ought not to feature as one of the problems that beset the state. The ubiquitous presence of potholes on the roads in Lagos state contributes significantly to the horrific traffic congestions and gridlocks.

Sadly, Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), the state agency saddled with the responsibility of restoring failed portions of roads in Lagos state, has over time demonstrated a tremendous ineptitude to engage in that task.

Non-Functional Or Absence of Traffic Light

The absence of traffic light at some key intersections on roads in Lagos contributes to the ever-present chaos on Lagos roads.

An increasing number of lack of and non-functional traffic lights frustrates traffic management in Lagos. This situation is responsible for gridlocks and even car crashes at strategic junctions across Lagos. During rush hours, traffic wardens and LASTMA find it difficult to control vehicles. This is often because motorists drive at their discretion.

Neglect of Other Modes of Transport

Over the years, it has become evident that the roads in Lagos have grown inadequate for transporting the huge population in the state. Successive governments in the state have proposed an integrated approach to public transportation in a multi-modal means of transportation, that entails the simultaneous use of the road, rail and water, etc. However, the Lagos State governments have demonstrated a fixation for road transport.

Construction of Narrow Roads With Wide Medians and roundabouts

With the massive increase in the human population in Lagos state, there has not been a commensurate increase in roads or the expansion of existing roads. Instead, some existing major roads have been segmented or partitioned for use by the BRT service.

Many of the roads in Lagos are too narrow to conveniently handle vehicular traffic on them. The few that have been reconstructed have very wide medians or roundabouts integrated into them, which further narrows the roads.  All these seem to give the impression that the government is more interested in aesthetics rather than functionality.

Poor Enforcement of Road Traffic Laws

Lagos state is not short of legislation to combat lawlessness on the roads. However, enforcement of these laws has remained the challenge of the state.

The several government agencies saddled with the responsibility of traffic law enforcement are either poorly-motivated, too lenient or are easily compromised in order to look the other way.

Condoning The Recklessness Of Danfo

One of the greatest menaces on roads in Lagos is the notorious danfo buses. The recklessness of Danfos operators is the stuff of legend. Strangely, they always seem to get away with their shenanigans - such as parking indiscriminately at a non-designated bus stops on the roads. This often causes traffic build-up. These traffic gridlock causing recklessness by Danfo drivers have been condoned for far too long in the state by the enforcement agencies.

Under-utilization of The BRT Lane

On 17 March 2008, the administration of Babatunde Fashola kicked off the Lagos BRT project. The BRT is a system where buses use dedicated lanes on the road.

Originally, the Lagos BRT project was a partnership between the government and the transport unions. The Akinwunmi Ambode government, in favour of a monopoly by a private operator, discontinued this partnership under the LAGBUS arrangement. The discontinuance of the Lago state–Lagbus partnership led to the kicking out of over 40 LAGBUS BRT franchisees, together with their hundreds of buses from using the BRT lanes. This has led to the non-BRT lanes becoming more congested due to the presence of the former BRT operators.

Delay in the Construction of Lagos Light Rail

The Lagos Light Rail Project is currently being developed to decentralized mass transit from traditional road transport.

However, there appears to be a good level of insincerity, inconsistencies, intrigues and controversies that have characterized the project. All these have all contributed to the delay in its completion.

The original idea for a Metroline in Lagos was mooted by the administration of Alhaji Lateef Jakande in 1983. But the project was scrapped in 1985 during the Gen. Muhammadu Buhari regime.

The idea was later revived during the administration of Governor Bola Tinubu in the early 2000s, with a formal announcement of its construction in December 2003.

The first section of the network, Phase I of the Blue Line, was originally planned to be completed in 2011. After many delays caused by “funding shortfalls”, the opening date was revised to 2022.

Poor infrastructure And Regulation For Waterway Transport

Many find it befuddling that Lagos state, a state that is primarily occupied by water, over-concentrates mass transit on roads. This contributes significantly to the overcrowded roads in Lagos state.

This is so even when considered that the waterways mode of transport is easier and more affordable to provide than road transport infrastructure.

Weak Enforcement of Not Using The Pedestrian Bridge

For whatever reasons – Lagosians are always in a hurry. Thus, they always have a way of circumventing established processes without any consideration for their consequences. For instance, many are of guilty of non-compliance with traffic laws regarding pedestrian bridges. Pedestrian crossing the roads -especially at expressways that provide - often cause traffic buildup. Enforcement of compliance with the use of pedestrian bridges by the state government has been typically weak.

Car Talk / 6 Key Components Of Your Car And How To Extend Their Lifespan by AutoJoshNIG: 2:20pm On Sep 06, 2019
Battery

An automotive battery is a component that supplies electrical current to a motor vehicle. On average, car batteries should last between 2 to 6 years, but like most car parts, it all depends on how you use it.

However, the best way to help prevent your battery from unexpectedly dying is to make sure it is always in good shape.

To sustain the lifespan of the battery requires that you do not overwork it needlessly. For instance, do not leave your car lights or other gadgets on overnight or when the car is idle.

Also, do not expose your battery to extreme weather/temperature conditions, and also avoid situations where your battery drains completely.

It is also important that you do not leave your car idle for days or weeks. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal cable if the battery will not be in use for long in order to avoid discharge, etc.

Brake Pads

Brake pads are the component of a car’s disc brakes that provide the friction to slow or stop your vehicle. They are steel backing plates with friction material bound to the surface that faces the disc brake rotor. The pressure and friction applied to the brake rotor is what slows and stops the wheel.

Generally, the more the vehicle owner drives, the more wear on the brake pads and therefore the shorter the lifespan of the brake pads.

The lifespan of the brake pad also depends on the type of vehicle, type of use and the driver’s driving style. On average, brake pads on the front last for anywhere from 30-60k miles.

A good way to ensure that the brake pad lasts, it is advised that drivers should learn not to apply the brakes abruptly.

During replacement, have both sides of the brake pads replaced together to ensure balance.

Head Gasket

A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head(s) in an internal combustion engine.

The function of the head gasket is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders.

The head gasket is the most critical sealing application in any engine.

Though the gasket is not expensive, but its positioning in the engine and the complex process of replacing it can make a mechanic charge you a lot for the service.

A head gasket can be damaged due to several reasons. For instance, engine overheating is a popular cause of damage to the head gasket. The metal of the engine block and head expands beyond limits during overheating. This expansion can pinch the head gasket to the point where it will fail.

The next major causes of head gasket failure are engine pre-ignition or detonation.

The surest way to extend its lifespan is to prevent the gasket from overheating. Always resolve engine overheat

Shock Absorber

The shock absorber is a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb shock impulses when the car bounces or drives on rough road surfaces.

A car without a functional or damaged shock absorber can make riding in it quite uncomfortable.

Excessive bouncing, front “Nose-Diving”, instability of the car when it is on high speeds, uncomfortable rides, etc. are signs of a bad or worn out shock absorbers.

In order to extend the lifespan of your shock absorber, avoid overloading your vehicle, reckless driving on bad roads – especially on roads with a lot of potholes.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is a component of the car that prevents dirt and foreign from entering and clogging the fuel pump or entering your vehicle engine.

Over time, a severely dirty or clogged fuel filter can cause the vehicle to experience several engine problems such as Misfires or Hesitation.

One way to know if your fuel filter is bad when you struggle to start your car, increased fuel consumption, consistent ‘Check Engine’ light on your dashboard, etc.

To make your fuel filter last long, you can either clean it regularly or have it replaced. But it is best to follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule.

If your filter is nylon or paper, you should just replace it with a new one. If it is made of metal and is not too grimy, you can clean and reuse it.

Clutch

The clutch pedal is that third pedal you will find in manual transmission cars. It is the one on the far left a driver must press in order to change gear.

The function of the clutch is to engage and disengage power transmission especially from a driving shaft to a driven shaft.

The clutch normally can last for a fairly long time. However, the lifespan of your clutch depends on your driving style. Most clutches are designed to last approximately 60,000 miles before they need to be replaced. Some may need replacing at 30,000 and some others can keep going well over 100,000 miles, though this is not uncommon, especially in this country with terrible road condition.

However, to ensure an extended lifespan of your clutch, use it as little as possible. When on standstill, you can just use neutral and handbrake than depressing the clutch. Also, ensure you change gears smoothly and do not rest your foot on the clutch.

Travel / American Visa Application Fee Increased For Nigerians by AutoJoshNIG: 1:41pm On Aug 27, 2019
Effective worldwide on 29 August, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay extra as visa issuance fee.

The US Consulate announced this in a statement issued earlier today.

In a statement, the US Consulate in Nigeria explained that the extra cost will be applicable to only those whose visa requests were granted.“Effective worldwide on 29 August, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay a visa issuance fee, or reciprocity fee, for all approved applications for non-immigrant visas in B, F, H1B, I, L, and R visa classifications,” the statement read.

“The reciprocity fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants pay at the time of application. Nigerian citizens whose applications for a non-immigrant visa are denied will not be charged the new reciprocity fee.

“Both reciprocity and MRV fees are non-refundable, and their amounts vary based on visa classification.”

The statement also explained that the increase in the fee is based on a similar treatment afforded to US citizens by foreign governments, in this case, the Nigerian government.

According to the statement, “Visa issuance fees are implemented under the principle of reciprocity: when a foreign government imposes additional visa fees on U.S. citizens, the United States will impose reciprocal fees on citizens of that country for similar types of visas,” the statement read.

“Nationals of a number of countries worldwide are currently required to pay this type of fee after their nonimmigrant visa application is approved.

“The total cost for a U.S. citizen to obtain a visa to Nigeria is currently higher than the total cost for a Nigerian to obtain a comparable visa to the United States. The new reciprocity fee for Nigerian citizens is meant to eliminate that cost difference.”

Car Talk / How To Change Your Car’s Spark Plugs by AutoJoshNIG: 12:03pm On Aug 23, 2019
In most cars, the spark plugs need to be replaced after about 30,000 miles. However, you might need to check your car manual to see if your car is any different.

Changing your spark plug might appear like serious work. Well, it is not that complex. It is a simple process that would need you to set aside some time and exercise patience. Do not rush, because you need to install the replacements in a specific order.

To change the spark plug, you would need a ratchet or a socket wrench, 12-inch socket extension and new spark plugs. Estimated time for the entire process is 20 to 30 minutes.

Well, if you are not too comfortable with doing it yourself, of course, you could contract the job to a mechanic.

Here are the simple steps to change your vehicle’s spark plug.

Locate your spark plugs in your car

Know where your spark plugs are located. Often, they are attached to thick rubbery wires.

Know The Number of Plugs

You will find either four, six, or eight plugs, depending on how many cylinders your car has.

Remove the wires connected to the plugs

Remove the wire to the first spark plug only. Do not remove all of the wires at once. Your spark plugs are installed in a certain order, which you
need to maintain.

Remove the first spark plug

Use your spark plug socket and extension on your ratchet to remove the first spark plug.

Install the new spark plug

Install the new spark plug by first screwing it in by hand, and then tightening it with a wrench for a perfect fit. Do not over screw or over-tighten it.

Re-attach the spark plug wire

Repeat these steps for each spark plug, one after the other.

Car Talk / Re: How To Tell If The Spark Plug In Your Car Needs Replacement by AutoJoshNIG: 10:05am On Aug 23, 2019
Car Talk / How To Tell If The Spark Plug In Your Car Needs Replacement by AutoJoshNIG: 9:55am On Aug 23, 2019

Without a spark, your car will not start—or go anywhere.

In cars, the spark plug provides the spark needed by the ignition to start a car. This electrical spark from a spark plug ignites the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber.

Electrical energy is transmitted through the spark plug, jumping the gap in the plugs firing end if the voltage supplied to the plug is high enough.

The condition of the spark plugs determines the performance of a car engine. Without healthy ones—your ride cannot sustain maximum power.

Now, here are some signs that your spark plugs need replacements.

Your Car Doesn’t Start Easily

If you have trouble starting your car, and you are sure it is not a battery problem and your car is not out of fuel, it might just be a bad or worn out spark plug.

A bad or worn out spark plug does not produce the spark needed to get the vehicle moving. If this happens, your car won’t start. A faulty spark plug can drain your car battery.

Your engine constantly misfires

A car engine misfires when it causes the moving car to suddenly halt - for a fraction of a second – and then resumes normal motion.

When this happens, it means one or more cylinders are not firing properly. This condition can lead to higher petrol gas emission or the burning of more fuel.

Engine Gives Inconsistent sound

The sound originating from the engine is consistent and smooth. But if your spark plugs are not performing as they should, your engine will produce a rough and jittery sound while producing larger vibrations through the car. Not having this checked can lead to costly damage being done.

Lack of acceleration

When your car does not accelerate when you put your foot on the accelerator, this is also a sign of a bad spark plug. This ‘sluggishness’ can be easily fixed by having the vehicle serviced with a spark plug change.

Increased fuel consumption

A worn-out or bad spark plug causes your car to burn more fuel within a short time.

Your car fuel economy will depreciate by up to 30%. This is due to incomplete combustion. If you notice you have to fill up more often than usual it can be caused by deteriorating spark plugs. To get back to your vehicle’s optimum level of fuel consumption all you will need to do is have your spark plugs changed.

Engine surging

When your car jerks and then slows down, or it constantly starts and stops, this could be a sign of a bad spark plug.

Jerking or surging occurs when a vehicle sucks in more air than usual in the combustion process. Jerking can cause a car in motion to slow down or continually start and stop. When this happens, it means the vehicle's engine is working inefficiently. This is also known as engine hesitation and a dangerous situation can arise if this occurs in traffic.

Politics / The Amount Nigerian Senators Will Spend On Cars by AutoJoshNIG: 11:16am On Aug 22, 2019
According to reports, the current Nigerian senators are going to spend N5.5billion to acquire cars for themselves. By estimation, each senator will get N50 million for their cars.

Traditionally, Toyota Land Cruiser Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), is the brand preferred by the lawmakers.

The cars will be presented to all chairmen and vice-chairmen of Senate committees specifically. What this means is that every member of the Senate may get a vehicle as there are 69 committees in the red chamber.

Note, the eighth Senate, led by Senator Bukola Saraki, spent about N4 billion as they purchased a brand worth N36 million each. Two extra cars were bought as well.

In 2012, there was severe public criticism as about N1.3 billion was spent to procure vehicles for Senators. 109 vehicles were bought for the Senators at the time at the cost of N11.07 million each.
