Car Talk10 Essential Driving Tips For Pregnant Women by AutoJoshNIG(op): 2:08pm On Mar 06, 2019
1. Minimize Your Driving

When your pregnancy has become really advanced, especially when it is in the third trimester, it is important to minimize the need to drive yourself. This is especially at the point when your belly has gotten too close to the steering wheel.

If you must drive long distances, arrange to have periodic stoppages for toilet breaks and to stretch your legs.

2. Keep Sufficient Space Between You and the Car Ahead of You

Avoid tailgating. Tailgating is when one drives too close behind the car ahead of him or her.

One reason why this is important is that in the event that the car ahead of you halts suddenly, this will prevent you from stepping on your brake suddenly, and bumping your Tommy unto the steering wheel.

3. Take Periodic Breaks

To keep healthy circulation, especially in your leg, it is important to schedule periodic breaks from driving, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes, so you can stretch your legs.

4. In the Event of a Collision

If you are involved in a collision with another vehicle, no matter how minor, visit the hospital to have the baby’s heartbeat checked and to verify that no harm has come the way of the baby. Even if you do not feel you have been hurt, research suggests that pregnant women in crashes without documented injuries are at greater risk of premature labour caused by placental abruption.

7. Reduce Driving At Night

Generally, driving is riskier at night. Night driving reduces visibility, increases the chance of encountering a drunk driver and increases fatigue. So, to avoid putting yourself and the baby at risk, minimize driving at night.

6. Fill Up Before you Start Driving

Drinking plenty of water is important habit during pregnancy. Ensure to always have bottled water and fruits when travelling. It is also imperative to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level, and that you avoid eating unhealthy food. By eating before you leave the house, and packing some healthy snacks for the road, you can keep your blood sugar in check and eat healthily.

7. Be Ready For Emergencies

Expectant mothers should prepare for emergencies when driving. For instance, before driving pack a traveling pillow, toiletries, fully-charged mobile phone, and additional clothes. If you are far gone into your pregnancy, you could find these items particularly handy if birth comes earlier than expected.

8. Consider Stopping Driving Around 30 weeks Into Your Pregnancy

When your pregnancy approaches its due date, it is often advised that you reduce or totally quit driving. Though driving at that period poises no direct risk, however, your reaction during emergencies could through up some risk.

9. Consider Using Public Transport

At the later point of your pregnancy, rather than drive, it is sometimes advised that you opt for a public transport vehicle, for example Yellow Cab, Uber, Taxify, etc.

10. Always Wear your Seat-belt

Wearing seat belts does not endanger the baby. Instead, it protects you and the baby. However, in your pregnant state, place the waist strap below the bump, somewhere around your Hipbones. The sash part of the seat-belt should be placed between the breasts.

Nairaland GeneralFuel Scarcity Leaves BRT Passengers In Lagos Stranded (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 12:35pm On Mar 06, 2019
For some days, a common sight at BRT bus stops in Lagos state is an unusually large crowd of commuters waiting for the arrival of an available BRT bus.

These commuters are sometimes subjected to hours-long wait for BRT buses. In the evenings, it gets worse. Then, commuters wait much longer for the arrival of available buses.

[
From our investigation, it was discovered that the scarcity of fuel at the fuel dump of the sole franchisee of the Lagos BRT service was the reason for the scarcity of available buses at BRT bus stops.

https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Crowd-At-BRT-Lane-6.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Further investigations revealed that the management of the BRT franchise operator in Lagos – Primero Transport Services Limited – is experiencing a face-off with their suppliers of fuel.

This situation has warranted the withdrawal of some buses in their fleet from the roads, thus causing a shortage of active BRT buses.

Primero Transport Services Limited was established two years ago to operate the BRT buses from Ikorodu to CMS.

His Excellency Mr. Akinwumi Ambode launched the operation of the company on 12 November 2015

Primero commenced its BRT services with 434 Youtong high capacity buses.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Primero Transport Services Limited is Mr. Fola Tinubu.

Travel30 Things To Know About Recent Railway Constructions In Nigeria (1999-2019) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 1:12pm On Feb 14, 2019
https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Olusegun-Obasanjo-2.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007)

1. In 2006, President Olusegun Obasanjo conceived  a modern railway project for Nigeria. According to him, “no nation has achieved holistic development without a coherent, integrated, efficient and reliable transportation system”.

2. On October, 2006, Obasanjo inaugurated the project to revitalize Nigeria’s 3500km railway network. This railway project was dubbed the Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernization project.

3. The contract for the railway project was awarded to China Civil Engineering and Construction Co (CCECC), for $8.3bn. It was to be funded with a soft loan from China.

4. The construction of the Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernization is projected to last for 25 years.

5. Due to funding problems, the project was later redesigned to be executed in standalone segments.

6. The Abuja-Kaduna segment was designed to be the first segment of the 1,124km Lagos-Kano line. It was to be implemented as part of the standard gauge project.

7. Obasanjo added a new 100km line which would be built from Minna to Abuja, continuing for 205km beyond the capital to Kaduna. He also said phase II would see the reconstruction of the Port Harcourt-Jos route.

https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Musa-Yaradua.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Musa Yar’adua (2003-2010)

8. In November 2007, the Yar’Adua administration stopped the railway project due to “paucity of fund”. According to the minister of transportation, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the project was “posing challenges to the current administration”. The intention to source funding from the country’s excess crude account had “constitutional limitations”, she said, and an anticipated $1.28bn loan from China “crashed for a number of reasons”.

9. To ensure that things are properly done, Yar’Adua invited the respected geographer and urban planning expert, Professor Akin Mabogunje, to a meeting to discuss how the entire rail system could be modernized.

10. In October 2009, The Yar’adua government signed the $875m Abuja-Kaduna rail construction contract. The project was designated as the Phase 1 (Segment 1) of the re-scoped railway modernization project. The railway line would cover the Abuja (Idu)-Kaduna axis in the new agreement with the Chinese company. The project was reviewed downward from the initial $8.3 billion signed by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

11. In 2009, the abandoned 276 kilometers long Warri-Ajaokuta rail line project was resuscitated. The project was originally conceived in 1987 to carry steel products and raw materials from Delta Steel Company, Aladja, Warri  but was later abandoned after about 254 kilometers had been done due to funding constraints.

https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/goodluck-jonathan.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Goodluck Jonathan (May 2010 – May 2014)

12.  Shortly after winning the 2011 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan initiated the high-speed Lagos-Kano rail project.

13.  The Lagos-Kano rail project is the first phase of the  Lagos-Kano rail line  which will connect Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Warri, Bauchi, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The project - which was designed to be executed in 6 phases - was projected to cost the country $13 billion, much of which will be financed with a loan from the Export Import Bank of China. The entire project was expected to last for about 25 years.

14. Between February and October 2010, a total of 25 new locomotives were purchased by the Federal Government from the General Electric Transportation South America and deployed to boost train services across the country’s railway routes.

15.  The Abuja-Kaduna segment is the first segment to be implemented as part of the Lagos-Kano standard gauge project under the first standard gauge railway modernisation projects (SGRMP) in Nigeria.

16. August 28, 2012,  the Jonathan-led government signed a Memorandum of Understanding  for the construction of the of $ 1.5billion Lagos – Ibadan rail project with CCECC Nigeria Limited. The Lagos-Ibadan line project is a double track railway line modernisation project. The standard gauge line is to          run between Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Minna, Kano and also there would be a phase that will take off from Minna to Abuja.

17. The Lagos-Ibadan Line is the Segment Two of the standard-gauge line that will connect Lagos and Kano.

18. In 2012,  work on the  Warri-Itakpe-Ajaokuta rail line  commenced. When completed,  it would enable train move from Warri  through Itakpe, Ajaokuta, Agbor, Warri and Ore with six stations in between.

19. June 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan, commissioned two sets of Diesel Multiple Units, DMUs, and 68-seater air-conditioned passenger coaches acquired by the Nigeria Railway Corporation to boost its passenger traffic.

20. According to Railway Technology, the construction of the Abuja-Kaduna rail line which started in February 2011 was completed in December 2014.

21. In 2014, the  Abuja-Kaduna rail line project was rated by KPMG, one of the leading consulting firms in the world, to be among the global top 100 world-class infrastructure projects.

22. In October 2014, the federal executive council (FEC) approved $6.6 million for the procurement of two locomotives for the Abuja- Kaduna rail.

https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Mohammadu-Buhari.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Mohammadu Buhari (2015 -Date)

23. . On July 26, 2016, President Mohammadu Buhari commissioned the 187 km standard gauge line between Kaduna and Abuja . The Kaduna-Abuja standard gauge railway tracks runs from Idu, near Abuja, to Kaduna in the north-western region of Nigeria.

24. The Abuja-Kaduna standard guage line has 10 stations and features both passenger and cargo trains.

25. The trains run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h. At its southern end, the line terminates at Idu, about 20km from central Abuja, where there will be an interchange with the Abuja light rail ( a 78km intra-city rail line).

26. The Abuja light rail is a different project from the Abuja-Kaduna rail line, but still part of the grand plan birthed by the Obasanjo-led administration.

27. In April 2017, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) announced it had begun the construction of the 36-kilometer Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway line.

28. The project which was earlier contracted for nearly $1.5 billion, was rewritten and renegotiated by the Buhari-led government and the Chinese construction firm handling the project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

29.The project is jointly funded by the Nigerian and Chinese governments will gulp about $1.5bn (N458bn).

30. The 160km Lagos-Ibadan Line will run from Iddo in Lagos to Ibadan in Oyo State, passing through Abeokuta in Ogun State. It will also have an extension to the Apapa Ports Complex.

PoliticsWill The Next Governor Of Lagos State Domesticate The FOI Law? by AutoJoshNIG(op): 11:15am On Feb 12, 2019
In Nigeria, Lagos state is – unarguably - in a class by itself.

Thanks to its huge IGR, no other state in Nigeria can boast of equal magnitude of construction and the upgrade of public transport infrastructures as Lagos state.

To meet up with the challenges of an exploding population, successive governments in Lagos state is always on to some transport-related project such as the construction of roads, pedestrian bridges, flyover bridges, metroline infrastructure, bus stops and terminals, public transport project, BRT corridors, etc.

Since the return of democracy in 1999, projects to improve the quality of mass transit and transportation principally account for some of the laudable accomplishments of successive governments in Lagos state.

However, one aspect that appears to undermine the efforts of successive governors in Lagos state is the non-transparent nature of the cost of these projects.

https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Agbero-11.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Indeed, the cost of executing public projects in Lagos state – especially in the transport sector – is shrouded in cult-like secrecy.

While Lagosians applaud some of the numerous achievements of the governors of Lagos state – past and present -, it would be fair for the taxpayers to have a knowledge of how much of their monies are used to undertake some of these projects.

It is for this reason that the domestication of the FOI law in Lagos state, by anyone aspiring to become the governor of the state, has become imperative.

In 2011, the Goodluck Jonathan-led government signed the FOI into law.

The Freedom of Information(FOI) laws allows access by the general public to data held by governments.

The emergence of freedom of information legislation was a response to increasing dissatisfaction with the secrecy surrounding government policy development and decision-making.

Since the law was signed into law by the Federal government in 2011, the Lagos state government is yet to domesticate that law.

In 2013, a pedestrian bridge was constructed by the Fashola-led government of Lagos state.

The pedestrian bridge – the Illasamaja pedestrian bridge – is situated at Sadiku bus-stop at Ilasamaja on the Oshodi- Apapa expressway in Lagos state.

It cost the Lagos state government N400 million to construct the bridge.

Today, in 2019, the Governor Ambode government is constructing a good number of pedestrian bridges across Lagos state.

It would be fair for the taxpayers in Lagos state to have an idea of how much it now cost the the state government to build pedestrian bridges in the state.

While we must not fail to admit that Lagos state has produced performers as governors, however, it is important that we up the ante by electing governors who are both performers and are transparent in their fiscal expenditures.

As the countdown to the elections ends, one pertinent question that we need to ask our preferred candidate for the governorship of Lagos state is this:

Are you willing to domesticate the Freedom of Information Law in Lagos state?

Car Talk21 Car Maintenance Tips That Will Make Your Car Last Longer by AutoJoshNIG(op): 5:49pm On Feb 11, 2019
https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/car-maintenance.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

1. As often as possible, check the pressure of your tyres. Do this at least once a week.

2. Regularly observe the level of the engine radiator coolant. At least, once or twice a year, make an effort to flush or change your radiator coolant.

3. Always check the engine oil level of your car. Ensure to change the oil at least every 3 – 6 months. Doing this will go a long way to lengthen the life span of your car. Also change the oil filter during every oil change.

4. Always try to check the level of the brake fluid and transmission oil as regularly as every morning.

5. Your air filters should be changed at least once every 6 months.

6. Always check your wheel balancing and alignments. Go for vehicle alignment. This will ensure the longevity of your tyres. It will also protect your vehicle from shaking while driving on speed.

7. Avoid allowing the fuel in your fuel tank to drain out completely before refueling. This will prevent dirt or other residues from being sucked in by the engine. Dirt, sucked in, can damage the injector or carburetor.

8. Avoid using your car to carry very heavy items.

9. The suspension of your car should be checked once every eight weeks.

10. Check all drive belts in your car for cracks. This should be done at least once a month.

11. The brake system of your car is very important. Always examine it. . Check your cars brake pads at least once every 2 weeks.

12. Check your spark plugs to ensure that they are still in good working conditions.

13. Visit your auto mechanic if your “Check Engine” light comes constantly.

14. Always ensure that your tyres are well inflated. Avoid driving your car with under-inflated tyres. A car, driving with under-inflated tyres, will require more energy to move, and more energy means more fuel consumption.

15. It is often advised that you do not speed up immediately you start the car. This is necessary in order to allow the car fluids to circulate before active motion.

16. Avoid aggressive driving. This can put undue pressure on the brakes, engine and other part of the car.

17. Reduce your car Air-conditioner usage. The car a/c causes the car to require more fuel to function. This can put unnecessary pressure on the car engine.

18. If possible, always try to avoid traffic hold up’s and gridlocks.

19. Refrain from revving your vehicle engine to the red-zone mark on your dashboard.

20. Wash your car as regularly as possible. This will help get rid of dirt that can lead to rust.

21. Avoid roads with potholes or bumpy terrains.

TravelThe Return Of Parked Trucks On Bridges In Lagos (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 3:15pm On Feb 11, 2019
There was temporary respite for Lagosians who regularly ply the Ikorodu road-Western Avenue expressway last week.

These commuters woke up to meet the absence of parked container trucks on the expressways and on popular flyover bridges along the expressways.

This was last Friday – a day before the APC Presidential campaign.

A campaign rally was scheduled for Saturday at the Teslim Balogun stadium. The stadium is situated  along the Western Avenue axis of the expressway.

The overnight relocation of the trailers came as a huge and pleasant surprise to Lagosians.

The presence of these parked trailers has become a a major nuisance on expressways in Lagos. They have become the primary cause of traffic gridlock on these roads.

The situation has become a hopeless situation. Efforts by the successive Lagos state government to relocate these trucks from the expressways yielded no result.

Even threats by the army - who believed that the presence of the parked trucks on bridges opposite the Abati barrack was a security risk - failed to get the trucks away from the expressway.

Sadly, less than 48 hours after the APC presidential campaign in Lagos, the container trucks are back on the expressways and bridges in Lagos.

TravelLagosians, Why Are We Like This? (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 4:32pm On Feb 08, 2019
In Lagos, our love for short cuts is legendary.

For some bizarre reasons – Lagosians are always in a hurry.

Lagosians always have a way of circumventing established processes without any consideration for their consequences.

For instance, these wire mesh fences were constructed by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration along very busy expressways in the state.

They were constructed to discourage pedestrians from crossing the expressway.

https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Wire-Mesh-Median-Fence-1.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

The median fences also serve the purpose of discouraging street trading and hawking on these expressways.

Also, with the fences – pickpockets, robbers and other criminals who emerge from nowhere and snatch valuables from unsuspecting pedestrians before disappearing into their hideouts have also being prevented from operating easily.

Despite these benefits, some sections of the median have been cut out to serve as thoroughfare for errant pedestrians.

In the pictures below, some Lagosians – despite the conspicuous presence of a pedestrian bridge and the inherent risk of getting run over by speeding motorists – can be seen using the cut out section of the wire fence as short cuts to the other side of the road.

Why do Lagosians put themselves in harms way?

Indeed, Lagosians, why are we like this?

PoliticsPresidential Campaign: See How Parked Trailers Vanished From Bridges In Lagos by AutoJoshNIG(op): 1:26pm On Feb 08, 2019

https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Parked-trailers-12.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

It has become the norm as opposed to the exception.

It is the sight of parked trailers on flyover bridges in Lagos state.

These parked trailers typically line up along the stretch of a massive 12.4km of expressway – from Onipanu to the ports in Apapa.

Several bridges along the way are not spared of their presence and enormous weights.

The bridges affected include Ojuelegba, Abati, Stadium, Ijora, Iganmu, Eko, Carter and Jibowu bridges.

These parked articulated vehicles are also the cause of the chaotic traffic flow on and around these bridges.

Because of these parked trailers, journeys that ought to take a few minutes last for hours.

However, Lagosians woke up this morning to meet these bridges totally devoid of parked articulated vehicles.

Indeed, the nuisances created by these trucks have been relocated from these bridges.

A school of thought speculates that the relocation is because of the APC Presidential campaigns coming up tomorrow in Lagos. This could be true as these routes are part of the ones designated for the President's campaign motorcades to ply.

Whatever reason it is, Lagosians can only wish that this arrangement to rid these trailers from flyovers is sustained and made permanent.

See below pictures of some of the Flyovers as at this morning.

Car TalkHow To Stay Awake When Driving by AutoJoshNIG(op): 1:57pm On Feb 07, 2019
https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/sleepy_driver-5-1.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

Get enough sleep before a trip

Get sufficient sleep before going on a road trip. A short nap of about 20 minutes can help you recharge before driving. If you are going to drive for a long distance get enough sleep before the journey, this will provide you enough rest to keep you alert for the journey.

Drink caffeine

Take a caffeinated drink before or during a trip. Caffeine helps to improve alertness. For instance, a cup of coffee contains about 75 milligrams of caffeine. This is enough to keep you awake and alert while driving. However, note that the effects of caffeine wears off after several hours.

Do not drink alcohol before driving.

Do not drink alcohol. Even very small amounts of alcohol will enhance drowsiness. Sleep, especially while driving, is hardest to fight when one is feeling drowsy from alcohol intake.

Watch what you eat

If you have to eat before or during a trip, eat something light. Heavy meals can cause drowsiness or cause you to become tired. Take snacks or very light food whenever you stop in-between trip. Or go for energizing foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Drive with a companion

When going on a long trip, it is wise to go with a partner. After a while, especially when feeling sleepy, pull over and let your partner take over the driving. This will allow you take a nap in order to refresh.

Avoid driving between midnight and 6 AM

Avoid situations that will require you to drive between midnight and 6 a.m. Due to the body’s biological rhythm, that period is when the body is naturally programmed to sleep, and controlling sleep at that period is hardest. . It is dangerous to drive during these hours as there is an increased risk of falling asleep at the wheel.

Chew gum

Chewing gum helps keep your mouth busy, and at the same time helps you stay awake and focus. Before driving, especially for a long trip, pick up a few packs of chewing gum. Whenever, you start to feel sleepy, chew some gum. However, ensure you go for sugar-free gum. Chewing gum with sugar content can have reverse effect. They can leave you feeling more tired than how you felt before, and ultimately induce sleep.

Stop to take a nap

When you notice that you are getting tired or sleepy, pull over in order to take a nap.

A short nap of about twenty minutes can refresh your brain; give you the stamina you need to keep driving. Find a safe place to pull over and nap for about fifteen to twenty minute. Set an alarm. You do not want a twenty-minute nap to turn into an hour-long nap. For your safety, you should choose a place that is not too isolated, such as car park, near a filling station, a busy roadside restaurant, etc.

Open a window

The sensation of cold breeze hitting your face can wake you up. Whnever you are feeling sleepy open a window for a few minutes. Opening the window will also usher in a great deal of background noise. This will prevent you from dozing off.

Car TalkDiesel-powered Vehicles: Their Advantages And Disadvantages by AutoJoshNIG(op): 12:20pm On Feb 07, 2019
https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2013-porsche-cayenne-diesel-2012-new-york-auto-show_100387674_m.jpg?w=640&ssl=1

Petrol or diesel-powered vehicle?

This is one buying decision that sometimes confront us.

Indeed, here in Nigeria, we have come to associate the diesel engine with big trucks and buses. Diesel cars are rare Nigeria, but they are, indeed, available.

According to a research carried out by Edmunds.com: in the US, only 3% of new cars sold there are diesel-powered. Meanwhile, the opposite is the case in Europe.

Also according to the report by Edmunds.com, in Europe over 50% of the new cars sold there have diesel engines.

So, is there something that the Europeans know that the rest of us do not know?

Over time, vehicles running on diesel have become notorious for their clattering sound and smoke belching. However, in recent times, there have being remarkable improvements in that regard. In newer diesel cars – even an untrained ear will find it difficult to differentiate between a car running on diesel or high-octane petrol. Even emission controls have improved for diesel cars.

Anyway, let analyze some advantages and disadvantages of the diesel-powered vehicles.

Better Fuel Economy

Diesel vehicles can travel further distances with little fuel. They can can deliver up to 25% to 30% better fuel economy compared to vehicles that are powered by petrol engines. However, it is important to note that the model and automotive technology of the engine also plays a huge part when it comes to fuel economy performance. Otherwise, diesel engines typically consume far less fuel than similarly performing petrol-engines.

Tougher and Rugged Engines

Diesel engines are rugged. They are designed to withstand the challenge of higher compression. They perform better, that is why they are used in vehicles designed for commercial transportation. What diesel-powered vehicles lack in speed (indeed, they are slower than petrol-powered vehicles) they make up in strength.

Less Carbon-Monoxide Emission

Diesel engines emits far less carbon monoxide than petrol-powered engines. This particular advantage is why diesel engines are preferred in some non-automotive machines in environments that carbon monoxide can prove dangerous. For example, in power generators, in submarines, in mines, etc. However, this does not mean that they do not emit carbon monoxide, but not in the potentially fatal amount like petrol engines do.

Higher Torque

Torque is a rotating force produced by a vehicle engine’s crankshaft. This translate into strong pulling power. The more torque an engine produces, the greater its ability to perform work, towing objects or carry heavy load. Torque becomes more important as vehicles get larger and heavier. Diesel-powered engines offer a higher torque than petrol-driving engines. This is the reason why larger vehicles – or vehicles designed for towing or carrying heavy loads – tend to be fitted with diesel engines. Diesels engines offer more torque at lower revs than petrol engines. A small car can easily cruise along with very little torque, whereas a big SUV, truck and toying vehicles needs a lot of torque to get it moving. Diesels engines are known for their exceptional torque delivery even at low RPMs.

Diesel is Safer

Diesel vehicles have proven significantly safer than regular petrol vehicles for several reasons. For instance, diesel is more difficult to catch on fire or burn than petrol and it will not normally explode when exposed to a high heat source. Since diesel fuel does not release fumes like petrol, the possibility of diesel vapours igniting and causing a vehicle fire is much lower. All of these factors contribute to providing increased protection for motorists in the event of a major car accident when driving their vehicles.

Excellent for Towing

Vehicles that are manufactured to use diesel as fuel are typically produced to have a lot of torque (pulling power) at low engine speeds. For instance, a 4-cylinder diesel vehicle can produce as much torque as a 6-cylinder petrol engine.

No Ignition Tune-ups Required

Diesel-powered vehicle do not need ignition tune-ups, this is because they do not have spark plugs or distributors. This is a big advantage for diesel engines. Diesel fuel automatically ignites to power the engine. It is for this reason that it does not require a spark plug or distributor – and by extension, the overall maintenance costs of diesel-powered vehicles are significantly lowered as compared to petrol-powered cars and trucks.

More Reliable And Last longer

Indeed, diesel engines have proven to be more reliable than petrol powered engines. They also tend to last longer. This is because they are generally built stronger than petrol engines. One reason for this is the fact that diesel engines does not require a high-voltage ignition system. Also, they also do not emit RF (radio frequency) that can cause issues with a vehicle’s electronic system. As long as car owners keep up with oil changes and other routine maintenance on the vehicle, it is not unheard of to see a diesel engine far outlast the other components in a vehicle.

Diesel Costs More Than Petrol

In some countries like Nigeria, the most obvious disadvantage of using a diesel powered-vehicle is the relative higher cost. They tend to cost more than petrol.

Regular Maintenance

For the fact that they do not have spark plugs or distributors, a diesel vehicle does not need ignition tune-ups. However, the absence of these elements also means you have to do more when it comes to maintaining your vehicle. In other words, the vehicle would need to have the oil, air and fuel filters changed on a regular basis.

Slower Speed Performance

If you are expecting high-speed performance from your diesel-powered car, then you might be disappointed. Diesel vehicles, though more efficient, stronger and more enduring, tend to be slower in speed performance than petrol-powered vehicles. It is for this reason that sport cars are rarely designed to use diesel.

Noisy Engine

The engines of diesel vehicles tend to produce a lot of noise, especially the clattering type. Although manufacturers today are getting good at using sound-muffling insulation in their diesel cars. That notwithstanding, diesel engines still have a bit of that characteristic diesel clatter.

They Generate a Lot of Smoke and Smell

Diesel vehicles are notorious for generating a lot of smoke. This is primarily due to the low-tech diesels found in older vehicles. However, today’s diesels are far more refined and are almost entirely smoke- and odor-free. This is due to cleaner (low sulfur) diesel, special exhaust additives, and advanced catalytic converter technology, today’s modern diesel car are more environmentally friendly than its gasoline

Scarcity of Good Diesel Mechanics

Unlike petrol-powered vehicles, mechanic who are proficient in repairing diesel powered vehicle are hard to come by.

Car TalkHow To Properly Use The “baby On Board” Sign by AutoJoshNIG(op): 4:00pm On Feb 06, 2019
https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/tmp_16767-BoB12021519251.jpg?w=640&ssl=1

Do you know this “Baby on Board!” sign?
It is black on yellow print, usually attached to one of the back windows of a vehicle with a suction. It’s use is most commonly believed to inform other motorists that the vehicle displaying the sign is traveling with a baby.

In reality, it has dual functions:
Parents want to keep their children safe. The sticker reminds you that a baby is a passenger in the vehicle and prompts you to drive more safely.

Parents love their babies. While commuting with their precious underaged passengers, they would rather prefer other Nigerian road users not to exhibit aggressive driving and unnecessary loud horns that may upset the driver or the baby that might as well be sleeping –babies love sleeping in cars

https://i2.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/tmp_16767-bob3_crop_600x400719143690.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

In the unfortunate occurrence of an accident, the sign can alert RRS, Police, Fire Brigade or other emergency services that there is a child in the vehicle who might not be able to extricate themselves.

You should only use the sign when a child is actually in the vehicle.
If for example, there is no child in a burning vehicle, rescuers could endanger themselves by continually searching for a baby that was not in the vehicle in the first place!

If there is no baby in your car. Please remove the sign from your vehicle. (That’s why it is easily detachable). Pregnant women are exempted.

Next time you see a “Baby on Board!” sign on a vehicle, do the baby a favour by displaying some impeccable driving manners.
The baby will appreciate it.

PoliticsBranded Campaign Vehicles Common Sights On Roads In Nigeria (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 2:03pm On Dec 20, 2018
It is the season of political campaigns in Nigeria.

As the nation grinds to another General Elections, politicians across all platforms and persuasion are currently engrossed in a campaign frenzy. Each attempts  to out-do their competition in terms of getting the widest attention of the electorates.

All manner of promotional tactics designed to convey their aspirations are being deployed.

However, a particular strategy that has become quite common is to brand their messages on vehicles.

On these vehicles, their campaign messages are done as full-body car wrapped or a single part of it.

Perhaps, due to its cost-effectiveness, politicians have adopted this campaign strategy.

These branded vehicles are an ubiquitous feature on roads all around the country.

Full-body or half-body wrapped campaign cars comes with a number of advantages.

For instance, apart from their cost-effectiveness, they can guarantee wider visibility. They can create the desired impact on thousands of electorate every day.

The mobile nature of this kind of campaign style ensures that a lot more people can be exposed to the messages. This is unlike the traditional and static billboard, banner, poster, etc.

See photos of some of these vehicles branded for political campaigns.

Car Talk10 Things That Can Make Your Car Look More Beautiful by AutoJoshNIG(op): 3:08pm On Aug 02, 2018
You don't have to be a mind reader to tell what's going on in the minds of people who just bought a car. Every car buyer I've come across is particular about what they can do to make their car look more beautiful. The tender loving care can be as simple as buying a nice sticker or as major as a complete retrofit. Whichever it is, they hit the internet to make searches and hit the stores to make purchases.

If wanting our newly purchased cars to look more appealing was a crime, every Nigerian would have been a criminal. Eventually, the appetite for these upgrades starts to decline shortly after you start using the car.

Just last week, an elderly man who is about 70 years old was saying he wanted the car he was about to buy to have all the lovely perks. He said he wants to use the car to showcase what he's worth since he can't be carrying all his houses around town.. Lol

Today, Autojosh.com is talking about few things that can covertly or overtly make a difference in a car.

1. Wheels
Wheels can really make or mar a car. It can really redefine the looks of a car by changing it from basic to OMG! Some car lovers pay so much attention to the wheels on a car same way others pay attention to the shoes on people's feet. If you are asked to choose between having wheel covers or alloy wheels on your car, which would you prefer? Also tell us the wheel you prefer in the picture below.

2. Display Screen
Touch screen, reverse camera, navigation and DVD. Who doesn't want one in his/her car? Some of us even spend as much as ₦50,000 - ₦100,000 or even more to install these things in our cars. If possible, it's better to buy a car that comes with a factory fitted display screen or you buy the original screen if you have to install one. A fake aftermarket product can have glitches or tacky graphics.

https://i65.tinypic.com/bi1cgl.jpg

3. Spoilers
This device gives aerodynamic benefits to cars by spoiling the flow of unfavourable air around the car. Originally used in race and performance cars to reduce drag, spoilers have also found their way to our daily regular cars creating stylish visual appeal in addition to its core function. Some of us like to buy a spoiler and stick it on the boot of our car if it didn't come with the car.

https://i67.tinypic.com/11jvrs7.jpg

4. Colour and Paint Job
The colour of a car can make a whole lot of difference. Car colour preference do vary from one person to another, however, there are some car colours that should rather be left unexplored. To make a car look more attractive, you may decide to change the colour, respray with the same colour, wrap it, buff it etc. Whichever you want to do, don't employ the service of a rookie because finishing is key. In some cases, all the car needs is just a wash.

Which colour do you prefer for the BMW Alpina B7 in the photo below? Is it the Alpina Blue, Alpine White, Chestnut Brown or Java Green?

https://i68.tinypic.com/mv1ah5.jpg

5. Interior Colour
One place you spend most of the time with your car is the passenger cabin. Therefore, the inside has to suit your taste. Some people prefer black fabric interior because of the kids while some others prefer to go red or brown leather. Your decision about the interior colour is better taken before you pay for the car.

Check out this picture showing the interior of the Porsche 911 in different colours and tell us if you are team black, red or brown interior.

https://i66.tinypic.com/rvh66f.jpg

6. Daytime Running Light
You know there is this unusual beauty cars do have when coming from a distance with their headlights on. Some drivers will go to any length to have that. Some people even deliberately turn on the headlights of their cars and forget to turn them off when they get to their destination making the closest battery charger ₦500 richer.

7. LED Lights and Other Lights
These lights range from LEDs head and tail lights to off-road flood lights, ambient lights, emblem light, neon light etc.

https://i65.tinypic.com/200tvrb.jpg

8. Tinted Windows
Tinted windows are amazing but excessive tint can be ugly and disastrous especially those nylon tint that you have to create a hole to see the side mirrors. Nylon tint can also put you in trouble with the police so it's better you have the factory one.. and don't forget to have your tint permit. Alternatively, you can also use sunshades.

9. Stickers, Badges and Decals
If you think it's only the guys that are guilty of wanting their cars look more appealing, well, that's not true. The ladies are also particular about having some nice and colorful stickers on their cars. Even some mothers want the "Baby On Board" sticker on their cars for its beauty over its function. See how to properly use the “Baby on Board” sticker

Don't overdo the stickers. If you have a Ferrari or AMG badge on your Toyota Corolla, we beg you to remove it. You can change it to Nigerian flag, logo of your favourite football club, etc.

10. Some Chrome Accents
When it comes to chrome, less is more. The more you try to impress, the more you mess up the car. Don't be like the owner of this Nissan Titan below.

https://i67.tinypic.com/b9io9k.jpg

How did you spice up your car? Tell us in the comment section.

Don't forget to like, rate and share.

TravelPictures Of Cars On The Street Of Enugu In 1959 by AutoJoshNIG(op): 4:54pm On Jun 07, 2018
Let’s take a trip down memory lane .

These are photographs taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while on a research in Enugu state, Nigeria in the year 1959.

These pictures contain some scenes from the street of Enugu.

In the pictures, we also see some cars on the street.

Back in those days, these cars, as seen on the streets, were the then "latest" cars. Today, they are classified as vintage cars.

So, can you identify any of the cars on the street by their brand names?

TravelDisasters Are Waiting To Occur On Railway Tracks In Lagos (PHOTOS) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 2:52pm On May 28, 2018

Nigerians have earned for themselves an unenviable reputation as a people who are more reactive as opposed to being proactive.

We are also a people with an incredible poor sense of maintenance culture.

Believe it or not, these railway tracks in the photographs are active Nigerian railway tracks in Lagos, Nigeria.

These sections of the railway tracks, due to a disgracefully poor maintenance activities on them, have become dangerously substandard for locomotive movement.

Their current conditions make them prone to disasters such as train derailments.

At several points on these tracks, some of them have become almost buried in the ground, overgrown by weeds, disjointed at certain points, heaped with refuse, etc.

In addition, some points on these tracks are being subjected to other forms of intense pressure such as human and vehicular activities.

One does not have to be a locomotive technocrat to know that the current state of some sections of these railway tracks can lead to operational errors, mechanical failure of tracks or derailments of trains. And of course, all of these are potentially hazardous to human safety.

Perhaps, the authorities are waiting for disasters to strike before these railway tracks are put in proper working states.

Car Talk5 Car Features And How They Work (part 1) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 8:30am On May 23, 2018
Luxury automakers are continually adding new features, and tweaking old ones, to ensure they’re providing the most opulent experience possible for passengers. Here below are how some features work.

https://i68.tinypic.com/732tti.jpg

1. PROXIMITY KEY;- also known as smart key, intelligent access, remote keyless access and other names different car companies may choose to call it. It was first developed by Siemens in 1995 and introduced by Mercedes-Benz under the name “Key-less Go” in 1998 on the W220 S-class, what it does simply is to help unlock/lock your car doors with the key fob in ur pockets. It can be used for other features like remote start, unfolding of side mirrors, sun roof, stereo or window settings depending on the sophistication and programming. As a matter of fact ,the Germans have taken it to a higher level by making key fobs which are able to park your vehicle and pull out from a parking spot or a garage ,but we would talk about the conventional types. The key fob transmits a low frequency signal which is picked up by a certain antenna on the car body or interior of the car at a particular distance. A touch or a gesture to a certain capacitive area of your door handle to lock and unlock the door or even open the trunk. The smart key determines if it is inside or outside the vehicle by measuring the strength of the Low Frequency fields. In order to start the vehicle, the smart key must be inside the vehicle.if you have your vehicle turned on and you step out(in case of those with push button start), your vehicle may make a sound to alert you.

The proximity key is quite different from the regular key fob that can just be used to unlock/lock/open the trunk.

2. REAR VIEW CAMERA;- A backup camera (also called reversing camera) is a special type of video camera that is produced specifically for the purpose of being attached to the rear of a vehicle to aid in reversing and to alleviate the rear blind spots . It is specifically designed to help avoid collisions. Cameras are of different qualities and sophistication’s, some have distance markers, some models offer infrared view that can be used at night. Some cars have multiple cameras on the mirror and even the front bumper which can be woven to be a 360 degree view round the car. So basically just put the car in reverse and it comes live, you may have the option of selecting a particular view depending on variety and number of cameras. some work with proximity sensors on the bumpers to help you know how close you are to an object/barrier. Some cars have cameras on the side mirror that is activated by the turn signal lever to help check vehicles in your side blind spots before u make a turn or overtake. This is an important safety feature in a car.

A law has been passed in U.S that all cars made from 2018 should have a reverse camera.

3. PANORAMIC ROOF;- is a new type of large or multi-panel moonroof which offer openings above both the front and rear seats and may be operable or fixed glass panels. Large operable openings are often accomplished with slider or spoiler type of mechanisms. In summary, both front and seat passengers can see the sun/moon above their heads through a glass roof when the curtain slider is opened. The part above the front passenger line can be opened to let air in but not the rear passengers. Some luxury cars with third row of seats can also enjoy the glass view if equipped. Some down sides to this feature is that its adds more weight to the car (would reduce the mpg and have a toll on acceleration) and the interior could get heated up during hot sunny weather, defeating the aim of air-conditioning if left open for too long.

4. SEAT MASSAGE FUNCTION: Most massage chairs rely on a combination of motors, gears, rollers and vibrating mechanisms. This kind of chair dates back more than half a century in actual production, not in automobile production. Over the last two decades they’ve become much more sophisticated and then placed in luxury cars. Massage chairs use a series of vibrating surfaces to provide a massage. To create the vibrations, manufacturers use small devices that contain a weighted wheel or gear. The weight isn’t centered on the wheel, which makes the wheel unbalanced. When the device’s electric motor rotates the wheel rapidly, the rotation causes a vibration. Mobile phones with a vibrating feature contain a small version of this kind of device. A massage chair needs several of these devices to generate vibrations across its surface without unbalancing the entire chair. They come in different settings in order to mimic a hand massage. Brilliant idea right?

5. MEMORY SEATS;- Memory seats or seats with memory function are power adjustable seats where you can save your favourite sitting position in the vehicles memory and you can recall that position anytime with the push of a button. The memory functions are usually used on the front seats of luxury vehicles, some of them are only on the driver seat and others have them on both the driver and passenger seats.

Memory seats are useful if more than one person drives the vehicle and especially if those persons are of varying sizes and /or have different driving preferences. Considering that some power seats have up to 22 different seating positions there are many configurations that your front seat can be adjusted to and returning the seat to your favourite position is made much easier with the memory function. In some vehicles the steering, side and rear view mirrors (interior and wing mirrors) can also be adjusted and set along with the seating memory.

When you press one of the buttons to recall a seating position the seat locates the setting while moving at a speed that’s not too fast to jerk your body but not too slow to test your patience.

The buttons can be located on the doors or around the seats themselves.

Which is your best car feature? Tell us in the comment section.

To be continued….
