You have to be careful, being a realist doesn't mean one should negate the facts. Ika will be Igbo if they say so themselves. I recently listened to Atiku Abubakar referring to the entire south as being populated by Igbo and yoruba people. Are you Igbo or yoruba? To the average Northerners, a Southeasterner is either Igbo or yoruba. To the average Southeasterner, all Northerners are Hausa, it's this over simplification that gave birth to the WaZoBia fallacy were everything Nigeria is seen from the tripod of Hausa, yoruba and Igbo.

As advanced has the United Kingdom, they never accept one ethnicity. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish guard their cultural heritage jealously, they even maintain separate national sporting teams and Parliaments. This is the way Nigeria should go. Majority of Ika and Ikwerre don't see themselves as Igbo.

Osayi that is a too common Edo name grin Ossai is also a common Ediod name! I believe it to be Urhobo version of "Osayi" or something related.
I have many Delta/Urhobo friends bearing Ossai

We Benins are not even claiming anybody. We just say what history says. Does anybody admitting or denying that they migrated from Benin puts food on your table or removes money from your account? No, it doesn't! In fact, I would like Edo State population to grow big enough that Edo State can be divided. Benin/Edo State and Edo Central & North can form their own State. Internal cohesion is vital for development. The more homogeneous a State is, the better long term.

Since Delta State was created, there is more distance between Edo People and Urhobo, Isoko and Itsekhiri. At some point in the future, all can decide if they want to co-operate or not.

With gradual distancing, co-operation will be more a matter of genuine desire to do so or forever let it be.

I am for purity too,but the truth must be said. Edo is already big enough for division, it was to be divided in 1996, the Benins on their own, Esan and Afemai on their own. The Otaru of Auchi was already intimidated by the population of Binis and asked for a separate state but for Anenih that thwarted the plan.Edo state cannot be less than 8,000,000 with the Binis about half the population of the state.

Edo was rated 3,000,000 in 2006 with obviously smaller states such as Osun and Ondo being giving 4, million as figures and Edo was rated 24 largest in terms of population in 2006, this same Edo did number 16 in terms of voters registration in the country in 2019 trumping both Ondo and Osun with about 400,000 and 600,000 respectively with even a lot of unregistered voters everywhere. though the other just conducted her state election.

Go on youtube, search for Itv and see people in various registration centres not registered. With the present registration, it should be about 14 highest and people are still not registered in large numbers, if it is to reduce Obi's vote in Edo, I don't know. In the Otaru's words, he said Edo south was big enough to stand alone

This is very interesting..... I read the article too and this otaru of auchi character I feel is a false and forced representative of the etsako people, it can be likened to the dilemma of Yoruba people in Ilorin and their emirs! It is now clear to me that somethings need to be "corrected" in Edo north!

Even if Oduduwa had 4, 000 children and grandchildren, he won't have so many hunter children and grandkids that migrated to form virtually the whole world. Every Baale suddenly has a father from Ife. Eku ise o! cheesy grin

Now I understand why Oba Frederick Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo, is not popular with "everybody is from Ife " apologists. He finds the story too funny to accept.

When The Greek talk about the World of Creation Myth, does it make them crazy or weird ?

When the Egyptians talk about their Creation Myth of Ora, does it make them mad people ?

When Roman Latin rumble in pride about their Myth of creation, does it make them superior to Yoruba creation Myth ?

These whole people I had mentioned bow in awesomeness to Yoruba Religion and Art Might. Yet Yoruba believed none on earth is superior to their own ancestral history.

The United Nation on world Heritage acknowledged and accepted IFA with its doctrine in its domain as part of world Heritage. But here you are making damning statement about My Race ? Obviously you are a young person with little knowledge on this things.

The Bible talks about Flooding
The Yoruba talked about Flooding
Science talked about Law of Gravity
Yoruba talked about Law of Gravity
Science talked about Numbering
Yoruba talked about Numbering etc

Addendum, Yoruba is the only Race on earth that associate Solomon's Knot with Royalty. The mystical Hebrew are also the only group on earth that associate Solomon's Knot with Royalty.

My question is

What is your ancestors legacy in the world to lay claim to ?

Every town city or place cannot evolve from ilé ìfẹ́.. It defies logic... We must agree that most of this our oral history are just made up stories, how can everyone come from Ifè? Why can't they come from Oyo ilé? Ejigbo, Oshogbo, igbajo? Why? Many other villages were in existence at the time of ìfẹ́ or let's say 300years later, are we saying those people don't hunt or migrate too? This thing of one person coming from ìfẹ́ to different places and become a king is ludicrous, many kingdom, or houses of kings were found by war and conquest .. This fable of everyone from Ifè is very ridiculous.

AreaFada2:
You identified is the main issue: Politics. It seems too late now. Any form of standardisation would have been a lot easier in the days of Mid-West or even Bendel. With Delta State, most people under 35 outside Edo Sate don't even know much about their Edoidness.
Standardisation, if considered, would likely centre around Benin/Esan as closest to Ur-Edo language. That won't sit well with many others.

Personally, I'd prefer that we preserve the various flavours and branches of Edo language as they are all very rich in cultural heritage in their own right. Various parts of Ur-Edo language are also preserved in these languages. For example, coco-nut is now mostly called ivin in Benin. A few decades back, elderly people still regularly called it "ekokodia". Urhobo and Isoko have retained kokodia by and large,

Instead, we can develop a more common orthography (to the extent that it is possible) that allows these Edoid languages to be mutually learnt more easily.

Stakeholders/traditional institutions/politicians can develop an Institute for Edo/Edoid Languages and Culture Research Institute affiliated to AAU, DELSU and others. May be even Uniben. Unilag once had Edo programme long ago. Not sure of now. Uniport is another major school, that can a part.

Imagine a linguistics graduate who can then further study to read and write in Benin/Isoko, Esan/Urhobo, Urhobo/Benin/Degema, Afemai/Isoko/Urhobo and can teach these languages. The institute can promote research.

Imagine Edoid language/culture festival every 2 years hosted by Edo or Delta or Rivers or Lagos to showcase the diversity of Edoid cultures. We can invite a guest state of the host's choice. Bayelsa, Ondo, Kogi, Anambra, Ekiti will be interested as guests. NOT just to dance, eat, drink and same in two years again. No.

A festival with artistes, academics, students, seminars, educational opportunities, scholarships, developing Edoid books in STEM subjects, apps to learn these languages, etc. Approach companies to co-sponsor. So many possibilities.
This is a very great idea, search Izoduwa on Facebook I believe you both are on the same path and are also ideologically like minded! You could pitch this idea to him.
CultureRe: How Mutually Intelligible Are The Various Edoid Languages by AutomaticMotors:
AreaFada2:
It depends to some extent on current geographical proximity, how much a particular Edoid language has been influenced by non-Edoid languages around them, how long ago a language separated from the Ur-Edo language, how well the speaker of an Edoid language truly understands own Edoid language, etc.

Naturally, an Esan person will understand Benin to a good level, an Isoko person will understand Urhobo to a decent level, etc.

This is not to different from European languages. A Dutch person will understand German language to a good level but a German will understand Dutch much less. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians will learn German much more easily because German is still nearest to their Ur-Germanic language origins.

A Spaniard will understand Italian to a good extent because Italian is closest to their common Latin language origin. A Romanian will understand French less than he will understand Italian, a Portuguese will understand Spanish than Romanian due to proximity to Spain, a Romanian will understand Italian better than Spanish due to Italian being still closer geographically and to Latin origin.

Mutual intelligibility depends on many factors.

In the same way, a Degema person in Rivers State will find Esan harder to understand than a Benin language.

As for the level to which people understand own language, if a Benin person doesn't know that Ekokodia is the original Benin name for Coco-nut, he won't recognise it when a Delta man says it. If he doesn't know that Osa means great ape, he won't recognise meaning of Osia when a Delta man says it, etc.

My worry is that with fewer kids learning their mother tongue, it will affect all the languages in the Edoid group.
You still remain a KING in this parts when it comes to Benin Kingdom/Edo affairs I have followed your posts over many years and I just want to say Thank You and please keep up the great work!
CultureRe: How Mutually Intelligible Are The Various Edoid Languages by AutomaticMotors: 5:48am On Nov 18, 2022
RedboneSmith:
A Benin speaker will not understand an Urhobo speaker and vice versa. I think some Isoko people might be able to understand some Urhobo speakers, but I am not sure. Even within Isoko and Urhobo, there are some dialect groups that cannot easily understand each other.
And who are you to speak on this?? Don't say what you don't know !! Stick to your lane!!!

In the south, it is the Igbos if you add Ika,Ikwerre and other Igbo groups in rivers state.

You cannot say for a fact this is the case, Edo south which is the Binis domain did as high as 1.3million in terms of voters registration in 2019. We cannot say the same for Ekiti which did as low as 900,000 in terms of voters registration. And we are the most traveled minority with about a third of Binis outside the shores of the country. My father gave birth to 16 children, I have four of my bethren outside the shores of the country. We cannot also say the same for Osun, although she just had her election , if we should combine the figures of Binis outside the country to the ones at home, it will amount to something significant, there is hardly any home you can't find a Bini abroad, in some homes infact, out of seven bethren, 6 will be outside the shores. Even in some larger family in Benin with over 30 children, some up to 15 Will be there. Check for the Osayi family on facebook and see. We have a diaporan population of about 1.2 to anywhere around 1.5 million
If you add all the tribes that trace ancestry to Benin in Nigeria ... Edo is the 2nd largest Ethnic nation after the hausas!!! This is facts
