Benin had coastal territories. In 1480 AD, Oba Olua of Benin sent his son Prince Iginuwa to become Ogiamie in what is now Ewere/Warri.

That new Dukedom was a way to extend Benin hegemony. Benin had access to Ohimiwinhin (River Niger), Benin River, etc. The entire Bight of Benin in fact by the reign of Oba Orhogbua (1550-1558). Okoro was originally a gentleman but over time became used for Prince. Oba's male children are called Okoro. Benin Crown Prince is called Okoro n'Okhua. He's only called Edaiken upon maturity when he moves to Edaiken Palace at Uselu.

I know at least 20 Benin families with surname Okoro.
