Source The early Muslim community did not really have a symbol. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Islamic armies and caravans flew simple solid-colored flags (generally black, green, or white) for identification purposes. In later generations, the Muslim leaders continued to use a simple black, white, or green flag with no markings, writing, or symbolism on it. It wasn't until the Ottoman Empire that the crescent moon and star became affiliated with the Muslim world. When the Turks conquered Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453, they adopted the city's existing flag and symbol. Legend holds that the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Osman, had a dream in which the crescent moon stretched from one end of the earth to the other. Taking this as a good omen, he chose to keep the crescent and make it the symbol of his dynasty. There is speculation that the five points on the star represent the five pillars of Islam, but this is pure conjecture. The five points were not standard on the Ottoman flags, and as you will see on the following page, it is still not standard on flags used in the Muslim world today. For hundreds of years, the Ottoman Empire ruled over the Muslim world. After centuries of battle with Christian Europe, it is understandable how the symbols of this empire became linked in people's minds with the faith of Islam as a whole. Based on this history, many Muslims reject using the crescent moon as a symbol of Islam. The faith of Islam has historically had no symbol, and many refuse to accept what is essentially an ancient pagan icon. It is certainly not in uniform use among Muslims. |
For Peace sake, is he the only person in Nigeria capable of becoming the VP at this crucial time? Please, I beg Jonathan to withdraw this designation, Please! |
The campaign against Sambo is coming on the heels of rising discontent in Kaduna State over the fact that the Deputy Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, a Christian from the Southern part of the state, would automatically replace him. The state government has beefed up security to prevent a religious crisis and breakdown of law and other. Riot policemen were deployed by the government while Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) were stationed at strategic locations. Reports quoted the Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna DSP Aminu Lawan as saying that the force had placed its officers at alert. Text messages are said to have been sent out to whip up sentiments and insinuate that Christians have taken over the state. One of the text messages reportedly claimed that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has "won". Kaduna has been a hotbed of conflict between Christians and Muslims in the past. However, there has been relative peace for sometime. Source here |
sweet9ja:First of all, Introduction of Shariah is not a barrier to any development in Northern Nigeria, places like Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, etc all use Shariah, but how would you compare their development to that of the whole Nigeria? So you should put Shariah aside in development, but If I understand, your point is that, instead of them to focus on development, they "deceived" people and Introduce Shariah to divert the attention of the masses towards that direction, after all the Shariah is not practised the way it is supposed to be. To your questions; 1. Of course it is very much better to educate the Almajiris to become much more better citizens, I support banning of the whole system (i.e. sending young children from villages to urban areas to seek Qur'anic education). It will surprise you to know that none of those that have participated in the Qur'anic Recitation Competitions in Saudi, Doha, Dubai, etc ever come from the Almajiri roots, they are all well educated, well catered youths from respected families, this goes on to show that those who were sent from their villages focused more on feeding, clothing, and just survival than studying the Holy Book which they were sent to learn. 2. Yes, Nigeria needs a Sovereign National Conference, but not the like of the one held during Obasanjo's tenure, it should be more practical than that, and issues to be brought forward must be meaningful for the development of all Nigerians, not just one section of the country. |
How about instead of that BS u listed, this is what really happens BS1. PDP will win kaduna state with the help of vice president sambo and Southern Kaduna ppl BS2. PDP will nominate a muslim and the Deputy Governor will be his running mate, and take over in 2015 BS3. Jonathan and Sambo will run together for 2011 BS4. If jonathan refuses to run in 2011(which i doubt),then sambo will be the front runner BS5. If sambo is not the front runner then he should go and rest,as there are many other ppl qualified to run,abi na only am wan chop? Shikena
Hmm, PDP would have won Kano in 2003 with the help of President Obasanjo, if that really works, which I doubt much. |
Apart from possible crisis in the state, these might also happen as the Deputy takes over; 1. Muslims in the state will rather vote for another party that have a Muslim candidate, therefore PDP will lose Kaduna state in 2011 2. Sambo may not be Jonathan's choice in the 2011 elections, as such, Sambo will lose both the VP and his chance for the second tenure in Kaduna state 3. If Jonathan is not the candidate of PDP in 2011 elections, then the above also applies to Sambo |
Only if the states have been successful in distributing water, the move would have been a perfect one. I am not against it though. Wishing Goodluck a very good luck. |
Ije004:I am not afraid, and I didn't see anything bad in it, and I don't live in Kaduna. I also pray something bad will not happen, but I am voicing out the way some "extremist", irrational, and jobless youths, may use the opportunity to spark violence in the state as babuji said earlier. |
But why all the Upgrades? Why not just select someone who is not holding any power presently? IMAO. |
stormm:That is the way an educated and literate person will understand the situation. The simple ideology of the North West region is that all are Muslims, and all governors of this region should be Muslims. By the way, I am not hoping for any crisis to happen. |
Afam:No justification needed, may be time can defend my post. (I don't pray so). I hope you understand me. |
Afam:Salute You too! |

Kaduna State has a history of religious crisis and tensions, when Islamic Shariah was introduced in the state the Xtians in the state were opposing, now it is very much possible for the Muslims in Kaduna to reject a Xtian as the Governor of the state. Save me! I am just voicing out what I think may happen, I did not say it will happen for sure. Prevention is far far better than cure! Save me! |
as a matter of urgency, the legislative should not approve sambo as VP, this is for the security and peace of the country. Update Namadi Sambo confirmed as Nigeria vice-president Both houses of Nigeria's parliament have voted to confirm the appointment of Kaduna state governor Namadi Sambo as the country's new vice-president. Mr Sambo, a northerner, was nominated for the post last week following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua. Mr Yar'Adua was succeeded by his vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan. Analysts say the new vice-president will be seen as a possible contender for the 2011 presidential elections in Africa's most populous nation. However, it remains unclear whether President Jonathan will seek to contest the elections on behalf of the governing People's Democratic Party. The new president is a southerner and the PDP has said its candidate will be a northerner - continuing its practice of alternating power between north and south after two four-year terms. Mr Yar'Adua, who was a northerner, died before his first term ended. Complete Reading and Source Here |
Gunmen The men, aged 45 and 55, were abducted while at a river beach in Abia State. The abduction is the second of foreign workers in Nigeria in the last 10 days. No group has said it carried out the latest kidnapping. One of the men works in Port Harcourt, the capital of the neighbouring Rivers State, while the other came from Lagos, the AFP news agency reports. The German foreign ministry said it was looking into the incident. Hundreds of kidnappings are reported in the oil-rich Niger Delta every year. Most victims are released unharmed, some only after a ransom is paid. Source |
Anoda Propaganda! Ordered to be killed by a fellow who sees him as a "threat to his Church", his wife is the only witness to the murder, so they killed her as well. No Muslim was there when it happened. |
The Preaching License is practiced in Dubai, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, in fact all the GCC countries, and some North African Countries. It is a very good move. I bet it will bring a lot of change to the extremism saga. |

THISDAY Bombs Disrupt Post-Amnesty Conference From Omon-Julius Onabu in Warri and Ahamefula Ogbu in Port Harcourt, 03.16.2010 The fragile peace in the Niger Delta was further threatened yesterday following two explosions outside the perimeter fence of the Delta State Government House Annexe in Warri, Delta State, aborting a Post-Amnesty Dialogue organised by Vanguard Newspapers. The two-day programme that attracted major stakeholders in the region abruptly came to an end amidst stampede and the news of the death of one person. Militant group, the Movement of the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has claimed responsibility for the attack. The first explosion went off at about 11am, some 200 metres from the Government House Annexe. Security personnel, government officials and the organisers reassured conference attendees of their safety. As officials were trying to calm an obviously shaken audience, another explosion planted in a car parked close to the gate of the Government House Annexe exploded. The second blast sent splinters into the Government House, shattering windows at the conference hall. Four cars and a motorcycle were burnt down while many others were damaged. The state Governor and Chief Host Emmanuel Uduaghan, Minister of Niger Delta, Chief Ufot Ekaette, who represented Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chairman of the occasion and one-time Chief of General Staff, General Andrew Azazi, Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, Govenror Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State and the representatives of Governors Theodore Orji of Abia and Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom were whisked out of the Conference Hall by security operatives. Other participants were also evacuated. The conference was titled “Restoring Hope in the Niger Delta.” The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Delta, Mr. Charles Muka, confirmed the death of one person. Other unidentified persons were also said to be injured, according to the police. The number of the injured was however not released. A statement by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Oma Djebah, confirmed the incident. The state government said: “The people of the Niger Delta will not be intimidated nor deterred by the cowardly act of a few opposed to a peaceful and non-violent approach of resolving the historic grievances of the region. We assure all that we will not be deterred in our determination to fast-track the development of our people.” Also, a statement signed by the General Manager and Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, expressed shock that a conference organised in the interest of peace is being aborted by the same people it was meant for. “For a successful dialogue, Vanguard had lined up all representatives of all tiers of government to come and discuss their scorecards for development in a way that must ginger all to action. These were supposed to be discussed by the militants, members of the civil society, international organizations and the road map for development clearly re-defined with stated deliverables and timelines. “It is therefore most regrettable that this noble project was aborted by the same people for whom it was designed to elevate. Vanguard, as a public trust had diligently invited all, including the known leaders of the militants to this proactive event. Vanguard remains committed to peace and development in the Niger Delta and shall pursue this noble initiative after due consultation with all stakeholders. We shall not relent on our pursuit of common good, equity and justice in our federation,” he said. Meanwhile, MEND has said it planned and executed the attack. In what looks like a movie, the group sent out a warning about the impending attack before detonating the bombs. Two statements from Spokesman of the group, Gbomo Jomo, sent to THISDAY at 10.44am and 11:26 am confirmed this. Jomo’s statement also appears to be a premeditated attack on Uduaghan who he claims declared on February 22, 2010 that the group is a media creation. MEND therefore wanted to prove its existence, hence the bomb attack, he said. “After receiving the baton of ignorance from his Bayelsa State counterpart, the Governor of Delta State declared in the Vanguard newspaper of February 22, 2010 that the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is a media creation,” Jomo said. “This assertion coming from the same person who claimed publicly that an oil pipeline can be destroyed by one man armed with a bottle of petrol, is hardly surprising. What is surprising is how he managed to obtain a science degree. “Thinking of no better way to announce our continued presence in the Niger Delta to Mr. Uduaghan, operatives of MEND today March 15, 2010, successfully breached the security at the Delta State Government House in Warri and planted three explosive devices in and around this compound which is the venue of the Vanguard Post Amnesty Dialogue organised by the Vanguard newspaper. These devices will be detonated remotely. “In our usual effort to prevent the loss of innocent lives, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta advises the immediate evacuation of the Government House Annex Warri and its immediate surroundings up to the Delta State Broadcasting Corporation. “The time given for this evacuation before the detonation of the first bomb is thirty (30) minutes which will elapse by 1130 hrs Nigerian time. The primary school bordering the Government House Annex should be evacuated immediately! The first bomb will be detonated at exactly 1130 hrs. We will thereafter advise on the other devices planted within and around the venue of the Vanguard Newspaper organised and Delta State sponsored conference. Organisers and participants at this jamboree will ignore this warning at their peril!!! “People must not remain in their cars and attempt to drive their cars and maintain safe distance from all cars and the area,” MEND added. MEND said the Federal Government had been organising endless conferences which it said would no longer be tolerated, describing the Vanguard conference as “one of the tools of deception”. The group insisted that what the Nigerian State continues to deny the Niger Delta people of the crumbs that fall from oil while big men in the North and other parts enjoy the full benefits. It cited General T.Y. Danjuma as one of such beneficiaries. The militant body also berated the governors of the region, describing them as “shameless and visionless stooges of the Nigerian State seeking second term at the expense of the well being of their people”. MEND warned of further attacks in the days ahead, particularly in conferences of such nature. It asked members of the public to stay away from such gatherings. The group would also carry out a number of attacks on oil installations across the Niger Delta. “In the coming days, we will carry out a number of attacks against installations and oil companies across the Niger Delta and will spread out to companies such as Total which have been spared in the past. We hope the actions which will follow will persuade Mr. Uduaghan that we exist outside of cyberspace,” said the group. Traditional rulers, former Governor John Odigie-Oyegun of Edo and Chief Felix Ibru were among the personalities that attended the meeting. |
